A LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMEN: Bon soir et Bienvenue! We are delighted to welcome you to the 2021 Symphony Fashion Show! After a year of so many unknowns due to COVID-19, it seems like a miracle to share the experience with you. We celebrate the show’s 16th year with the exquisite designs of the renowned Zang Toi. Our friend Zang is highly acclaimed in the fashion world for his glamorous creations, creating his “House of Toi” label more than 30 years ago. We are thrilled to have the incredibly talented headliners Carly Pearce and Runaway June, who are certain to wow and entertain our guests this evening. They are the perfect fit to accompany Zang’s dazzling Fall Collection, “Paris, my .” We are deeply grateful for our continued partnership with Gus Mayer of Nashville. This fabulous local boutique has engaged 11 unbelievable designers for the Fashion Show since 2006. Be sure to stop by the Trunk Show this week to meet Zang and purchase his looks fresh off of the runway! A portion of sales will be generously given back the Nashville Symphony. We are eternally grateful to Janice Elliott Morgan for her endless support and commitment to making this year’s event a spectacular experience in every way! Thank you, Janice and Gus Mayer! It is our honor to dedicate tonight’s event to our Honorary Chairmen, Barbara Bovender, Barbara Burns, and Ashley Rosen. We thank you ladies for your love of this annual event, and for your unending service to the arts in Nashville. We are also indebted to our fabulous Executive Chairman, Sandra Lipman, who has given countless hours of her time and energy to the Symphony Fashion Show for the past 16 years! Sandra, we owe you a world of gratitude for your friendship and expert advice this year! Thank you also to our fantastic event planner, Bruce Pittman. Nobody knows better than Bruce how to pivot and make an event come to life. His smiles, gentle nods, and sound advice helped us to navigate a demanding set of circumstances. Bruce, we look forward to making more festive Boomerangs with you in the weeks ahead! And to our amazing Public Relations chair, Susan Chapman, we appreciate your efforts to draw attention to this magical affair. We recognize the challenges that so many, including the Nashville Symphony, have experienced this past year. It was our desire to create a safe and unforgettable LIVE fundraiser that drove the vision for the evening. We are thankful to our partners at HCA/TriStar Health, whose guidance has been so important. To all of our supporters, both in the hall and attending virtually, thank you for sharing your evening and supporting the incredible Nashville Symphony. It is such a privilege to have an accomplished orchestra in our community. To the staff, dedicated Committee members, and incredible vendor partners who have been invaluable to the success of this event, thank you! C’est l’heure de fêter ça! We hope to see you all back at the Schermerhorn for live orchestral music very soon. In the meantime, A Votre Santé!

ZANG TOI

Z

ang Toi is a renowned Fashion Designer who has built a tradition of elegance for 30 years. Coming from humble beginnings, Zang was born and raised in a small village, Kuala Krai in Kelantan, Malaysia. He was the youngest of seven children of a local grocer. At the age of 20, Zang landed in New York City, where he studied at the distinguished Parsons School of Design. In August 1989, he opened his atelier and soon after, U.S Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour featured Zang in March 1990 issue, making him one of the first Asian designers championed by the renowned editor. In that same year, Zang was awarded the Mouton Cadet Young Designer of the Year, which recognizes the top young, U.S. designer of the year.

In a Newsday article published in 1991, Frank De Caro enthusiastically noted of the Malaysian-born designer and his success, “If anyone is THE NEXT BIG THING, it’s him.” Zang was knighted by HRH Sultan Ismail Petra Ibni Almarhum of Kelantan in 1997 and Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia in 2013. He was also named the Icon of Malaysia by Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Haji Mohammad Najib Razak in 2013. Since that time, Zang’s work has been featured in major publications such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, etc. Not only has he dressed Hollywood celebrities such as Sharon Stone, Elizabeth Taylor, Farrah Fawcett, Kirstie Alley, Patti LaBelle, Gong Li, Eva Longoria, Fergie (Black Eyed Peas) and Heather Graham, but has also created luxurious looks for philanthropists and royalty including Melinda Gates and Saudi Princess Haifa Bandar Al Saud. Along with his passion for glamorous fashion, Zang has been an avid philanthropist and has raised over $700,000 to help in the effort in finding a cure for cancer. Zang’s continued success was recognized by Vivid Magazine, where he was named as one of the Top 8 most influential Chinese Americans (June-July 2011 issue). Today, the world continues to recognize Zang’s passion for timeless beauty as he builds on a strong tradition of elegance.

ho is the Gus Mayer woman? She’s a fashion-savvy, discriminating shopper who appreciates fine fashion with a distinctive edge. Whether she prefers a contemporary approach or timeless elegance, she wants clothes and accessories that work for her…whether it’s a casual weekend gathering or a glittering black-tie event. Our buyers search the market for fashion that stands out f rom the crowd. Equally important are quality and sophistication. But before our fashions ever find their way into our customers’ hands, we do our homework and determine the ever-changing wants, needs and lifestyle of the Nashville woman. We then interpret the season’s trends to match this profile, and finally, educate and update our sales consultants on new arrivals so they can assist each individual in choosing the perfect selection.

DON’ T FORG ET ! Zang Toi Fall 2021 Trunk Show At Gus Mayer Thursday, April 29, to Saturday, May 1 10 am to 5 pm Gus Mayer will donate a percentage of Zang Toi sales to the Nashville Symphony

RUNAWAY JUNE

I

t’s that sound. You know it – the unmistakable sound of three voices in harmony, a harmony that rings back to the early days of Country music, of singing on a porch on a summer’s day, of singing just for the joy of it. That’s the sound of Naomi Cooke, Jennifer Wayne and Natalie Stovall – a.k.a. critically acclaimed Country trio Runaway June.

That sound is at the core of every song on their debut album, Blue Roses – especially the hauntingly personal title track. “We all love Bluegrass and traditional Country music. That’s been all of our hearts,” says Jennifer. “It’s what we love singing every single night, and it’s the backbone to all of our songs.” With the sparest of instrumentation and the gloriously rich three-part vocal line that put Runaway June on the map, “Blue Roses” may be a meditation on mortality – but sonically, it stands as a proud mission statement for this band as their first full-length record finally makes its way into the world. Produced by Dann Huff and Ross Copperman, the album is comprised of six new tracks that join four songs from their self-titled EP (including one barn-burning cover of Dwight Yoakam’s “Fast As You” that’s become a live favorite). ”Blue Roses” demonstrates, as Naomi puts it, “all the sides of who we are. It’s an album with many different faces.” Whether it’s the bold kiss-off of the opener, “Head Over Heels” or the pain-soaked regret of “Got Me Where I Want You,” the songs share one defining non-musical component as well: an intense, lived-in honesty from three women who’ve earned their scars as well as their victories. Four years ago, the three women were solo singer-songwriters, connected via the small-town network of Nashville’s Music Row. “Labels were not signing solo female artists at the time, and it was really daunting and discouraging,” remembers Naomi. Fate soon found the trio in a writing room together, and the songs just flowed. When BBR Music Group heard their music, they were quickly added to its newest imprint, Wheelhouse Records, and Runaway June was born. The early buzz burned bright. Despite scoring the first Mediabase Top 25 single for a female trio in over a decade with “Lipstick” in 2017, the band still had a long road ahead. Their persistence paid off, and change was on the horizon. “Buy My Own Drinks,” from their 2018 self-titled EP, cracked the Top 5 – a monumental accomplishment on multiple levels breaking a 14-year drought in that space for female groups – and they received back-to-back ACM nominations for 2018 and 2019 New Vocal Duo or Group of the Year, as well as a CMT Award nomination. Most importantly, says Jennifer, they never forgot where the dream started.

CARLY PE ARC E

F

iercely rooted in the classics, the girl who left her Kentucky home and high school at 16 to take a job at Dollywood has grown into a woman who embraces the genre’s forward progression and is confident in what she wants to say.

Lighting a fire with her debut album EVERY LITTLE THING and the PLATINUM-certified history making title track, Carly has since become “Country’s ‘it’ girl” (ABC Radio), touring alongside Blake Shelton, Rascal Flatts and Luke Bryan. With the most CMA Awards nods for any new artist in 2020, she won Musical Event of the Year. In a year of uncertainty, Carly turned to the comfort of records she’s drawn inspiration f rom since her childhood dream started to take hold – Dolly, The Chicks, Trisha, Reba, Patty Loveless. Like those before, she leaned on her own intuitions with Top 25-and-rising single “Next Girl,” and a clever new video. Carly explores more of a pivotal time with a seven-song collection called 29 (available now via Big Machine Records), finding creative simpatico with Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne following the unexpected death of her mentor and former producer busbee. With her catalogue already boasting over 1 billion streams, she opens up even more in Carly Pearce’s 29 – The Interview. As Carly marks a new chapter coming of age, “I Hope You’re Happy Now” wins ACM Awards Single and Music Event of the Year for the PLATINUM-certified, No. 1 duet with Lee Brice, plus she scored a Female Artist nomination and performed on the live broadcast. Leaning into her faith, Carly joins five-time GRAMMY® nominated singer/songwriter Matthew West on a new version of his No. 1 “Truth Be Told”.

B

arbara and Ashley are the dynamic duo behind the 2020 Symphony Fashion Show – the event which unfortunately had to be cancelled but still remained a stunning fundraising success in support of the Nashville Symphony! They truly deserve a moment in the spotlight and a huge round of applause from the Symphony Fashion Show Family.

Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Barbara landed in Nashville over forty years ago. A longtime career in retail fashion merchandising led her to her current love as a wardrobe consultant helping women to feel empowered by building wardrobes that will stand the test of time, and equip them to feel confident for every occasion. Barbara is a passionate volunteer for many organizations such as Franklin Road Academy, Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, Montgomery Bell Academy, Cheekwood’s Swan Ball, The Antiques & Garden Show of Nashville, and The Family Center. Ashley’s Nashville hometown roots run deep, and we are thrilled that she and her family rejoined our community after many years away in California, Rhode Island, Hong Kong, and Colorado. A creative graphic designer by trade, Ashley has channeled that creativity into volunteerism with the Boulder Country Day School in Colorado, and the Swan Ball Auction, Swan Ball Jewelry Show and Red Cross Tiffany Circle in Nashville. Both Barbara and Ashley are also fantastic past chairs of the Symphony Ball, with reputations for planning and executing unforgettable evenings of magic. We are truly thankful to each of them for their love and dedication of the Nashville Symphony.
