Wilderness ‘Hacks’ Workshop at Old Pine Farm Natural Lands Trust

Join Freddie Patane at Old Pine Farm Natural Lands Trust at 2 p.m. on October 18 for fun tips and demonstrations on how to make time outdoors safer and more enjoyable—part of their Walk in the Wild series.

A wide range of topics will be covered including camping essentials, land navigation, budgeting for gear and emergency preparedness. The workshop is designed for beginners and will be held outside. Participants will even have an opportunity to make some tasty treats around the campfire. Patane has led workshops on subjects such as making rope from natural material, bow and arrow safety and bushcraft. He is a lifelong resident of South Jersey and works in media production. His enthusiasm for wilderness skills and primitive crafts has led him to train with world-class primitive archers, survival instructors and some of the United States’ top blacksmiths. He’s happiest when capturing photos with his vintage film cameras, working on backyard projects and celebrating his artistic mishaps with like-minded souls.

Participants are asked to wear a face cover, practice social distancing and meet at the Willoughby House at the end of Pine Avenue, off Good Intent Road, in Blackwood Terrace. Carpooling is recommended.

Cost: Free. Location: 340 Pine Ave., Deptford. For more information and to ask questions, call Joan Tracy at 856-340-3208. Visit Facebook for potential changes and directions.

Collective Philanthropy Powered By Women

Keynoter Dr. Debra Mesch, of the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and Women’s Philanthropy Institute at Indiana University, will talk about the powerful impact of women’s movements and ways women and men’s giving differ. Two panels, Why We Give and How We Give, will showcase a diverse mix of local women’s giving initiatives, sororities, social giving groups and foundations.

“One way to bridge the diversity and inclusion gap is to understand the various ways communities of women are already working to strengthen South Jersey,” says Kyle Ruffin, chair of the event. “Unfortunately, these communities work in silos and don’t know the others exist. Why We Give is designed to introduce the groups and open doors to the kind of collaboration that yields greater impact.”

Cost: $20; proceeds support the SJ COVID-19 Response Fund and the Project Sarah domestic violence program. For more information or to register, visit buff.ly/2RyR3P4.

Reclaim Strength and Spirit After Breast Cancer

Breast cancer treatment may take a toll on the body, but the strength and fortitude of someone who has overcome cancer should never be underestimated. Virtua Health’s specially trained team of physical and occupational therapists can help people rebuild their muscles after cancer treatment, and more importantly, help to strengthen their spirit.

Breast cancer surgery affects the breast tissue as well as the muscles of the chest wall and shoulder. This can lead to upper back and shoulder pain, decreased range of motion and strength, swelling in the arms or legs (lymphedema) and fatigue.

Virtua Health’s specialists work with people to relieve the side effects of their treatment through exercise, massage, compression—and compassion.

“Before we begin our exercise and therapy program, we start with a thorough interview. We want you to take us through everything that’s happened since your diagnosis and treatment. This helps us understand your experience and your state of mind,” says Virtua certified lymphedema specialist Lynn C. Davis, PT-CLT/LANA.

“Most importantly, we assess your activity level to find out if you’re where you want to be and build a program to help you rebuild your strength—and reach your goals,” adds Davis. “After completing your goals, you are encouraged to join our Strength After Breast Cancer Program to continue your care.”

Food Sensitivity Testing Now Available at the Replenish Center

The Replenish Center, in Willingboro, has added food sensitivity testing to its integrative and complementary services, which include bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, physician -supervised weight management, and both aesthetic and functional medicine.

Food is the stuff of life, yet sometimes it is the very cause of ill health and dysfunction. Often, it is hard to know which foods are the culprits. It is very common for people to be allergic to foods that they eat frequently. According to James Breneman, M.D., former chairman of the Food Allergy Committee of the American College of Allergy, approximately 60 percent of all undiagnosed symptoms are due to underlying food allergies.

Most food allergies are of the “delayed hypersensitivity” type in which symptoms appear anytime from hours to days after eating the offending food. If the food is one that is eaten frequently, the repeated exposure can lead to a constant level of symptoms that begins to seem “normal”. People may not even realize that they could feel much better by simply eliminating the problematic foods from their diet.

The Replenish Center uses a type of testing that checks blood for antibodies that the body may be making to specific foods. The allergy profiles focus on detecting delayed-type hypersensitivities and test up to 191 common spices and foods. Many patients report new levels of vitality and optimism after eliminating the problematic food sources.
