Form and Composition

Various forms were sketched out and a few were selected for further refinement. The sketches were then simplified to black and white forms. Further, these forms were xeroxed in various sizes and placed in different possible directions to get a balanced composition and then the composition was painted in Black and white again. Forms from nature and workshop were explored and simplified to make a composition
Print Concepts

A session was conducted on nature drawing which was carry forwarded to make repeats (Jaal, bel & buti) and then taking reference from various art pieces, their essence was replicated onto the repeat. Further, the repeats were cleaned on Ned Graphics software and were separated into maximum 6 screens for printing on textiles.

Opportunity The following illustration shows the foot share of people inside the Mosque throughout the day during summers. It was observed that the dominant foot share in the premises changes its patterns in the course of the day. People generally spread in the area during morning after the market place nearby opens and during evenings. However, during afternoons, people follow a certain path which covers the minimum distance from the entrance to the ablution pool and from there to the prayer hall. Assuming and confirming that it is because the floor becomes too hot, there was an opportunity to respond to.
Design Brief The project brief was to choose a space with an opportunity for design intervention for floorscapes. Thus, visits were made to a lot of heritage sites within Ahmedabad. Architecture of the Site The Architecture of Jama Masjid built in 1424 by Sultan Ahmad Shah Suggests that they have a huge rectangle patio in the middle, surrounded by pillars. The Mosque also has an Ablution pool at the center. Yellow sandstone was used to construct the shrine and walkways. All these are eye catching features of the shrine and there are elaborate designs.
Observations Activity inside the Jama Masjid on a daily and annual basis includes care taking of the site which involves mopping the patio and mosque, stacking and cleaning of rugs and mats used for prayers and resting purpose ,use of Ablution pool by devotees during prayers, taking meals on the pavements by families, relaxations and recreational activities, tourist visits and event organisation during Islamic festivals.
Response Patterns from the architecture of Jama masjid were replicated into a rug which could be spread across the mosque from the Ablution pool to the prayer hall to save devotees from the scorching heat affecting their feet.

High pressure braided hose pipes were filled tightly with sand and kept in concentric circles. Then they were tied according to the desired form. Each elevation was tied with one nylon rope which got attached to an equilateral metal rim above the swing so that the form of the swing remains intact. The equilateral metal rim was attached to a single point through another set of 3 ropes.
Since the design brief was to take a form and change its context in terms of its usage and handling, scraps were collected from around the campus and after a few explorations and study on ergonomics, 2 forms were decided to be used for recreation using chair and bi cycle handle. In the first one, a hollow circular metal rim is welded to the form so that a person sitting does not get a hindered view. On the second one, the usage of bi cycle handle to swing gives a completely different feel to the user. Form exploration of outdoor swings. Exploration third from the left was chosen as it would give a 360 degree rotation on swinging. Also the user can sit from any of the three side and it also provide a back rest.
Recreation was the theme for the exercise.

Reference The reference for construction of fabric was taken from an age old ritual of applying perfume called ‘itr’. It has innumerous variety of favored smell and is kept inside small reflective glass bottles. The color of perfume varies from orange to wine red to shades of white and blue.
Color Pallette Colors for the construction of fabric has direct reference from the color of the perfumes or itr and opaque to clear glass bottles in which they are preserved. Creating a narrative through texture, composition and rhythm on fabric.
