Welcome to the 2024 NASW-NJ Annual Conference and Exhibition. As we gather for this 31st Annual Conference, we are thrilled to be with over 1,200 of our closest friends in Atlantic City.

As you know, we live in traumatic times and social workers are always there to help our clients and our communities You have shown that regardless of where or how you practice, across all disciplines and settings, social workers are essential
We put together this year’s conference, Life in a Traumatic World: Implications for Social Work Practice, so we can come together as a profession to learn about ways to help our clients and communities. But also, very importantly, we want to acknowledge that social workers practice in turbulent times, too. Often times, social workers are exposed to the same traumatizing circumstances as their clients Our Sunday keynote speaker, Dr Carol Tosone will discuss shared traumatic stress What does a social worker do when they are experiencing the trauma of COVID19 or a natural disaster? We are resilient, yes, but not superhuman
Talking of resilience, our movie on Sunday, Resilience: The Biology of Stress and Science of Hope, is a one-hour documentary that delves into the science of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the birth of a new movement to treat and prevent Toxic Stress and greatly improve the health of future generations
Continuing the discussion around resilience, our Monday keynote speaker, Dr. Esther Deblinger , the co-developer of Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), will showcase how this evidence-based treatment for children and their non-offending caregiverscontributes to enhanced resiliency in children, adolescents and adults
On Tuesday, NASW CEO, Dr Anthony Estreet will discuss the four pillars of NASW advocacy and how the association works on behalf of social workers
Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten the fun! Social workers know how to enjoy themselves, so we hope you will attend the Rock Star party on Monday evening. There is a DJ and a 360 Photobooth. Come dressed as your favorite pop idol/rock star/disco singer. Dr Dawn Apgar is Chair of the NASW-NJ Continuing Education Committee and Associate Professor/BSW Program Director at Seton Hall University. Dr. Apgar has served in many NASW leadership positions on the state and national levels, including as a former President of the NASW-NJ Board of Directors and the current Chair of the national Credentialing Committee. Dr Apgar’s scholarship and writings focus extensively on social work education, licensure, and practice, the three pillars of the profession

As social workers, we are frontline workers navigating the complexities of the human experience, while offering solace, support, and advocacy to those who need it most. In a world increasingly marked by trauma, our roles as social workers have never been more critical Our shared commitment to understanding and addressing trauma is not only a testament to our profession's resilience but also a reflection of our unwavering dedication to social justice and human dignity
Throughout this conference, we will be on a journey of exploration and discovery, delving into the complexity of trauma and its implications for social work practice Centering on the marginalized voices of oppressed communities and the silent struggles of those facing intergenerational trauma, we will together confront the stark realities that define the landscapes of trauma in our world today. Keynote and plenary addresses, interactive workshops, and insightful panel discussions will help us see the transformative power of trauma-informed care.

Dr Pérez, a native of Newark, New Jersey, is a licensed clinical social worker with three decades of experience. Currently serving as the Chief Operating Officer at Social Current, an organization based in Washington DC, specializing in accreditation and providing technical assistance and consultation. She addresses a diverse array of issues, including trauma-informed care, leadership, policy, equity, diversity, and inclusion for social service agencies in both the US and Canada.
Dr Pérez is not only recognized for her leadership roles but is also a highly sought-after presenter, sharing her insights on the intersection of trauma-informed care and EDI Lastly, she earned both her MSW and DSW degrees from Tulane University with a focus on leadership and trauma, further solidifying her passion for all things social work
Dr. Tosone is a Professor at New York University Silver School of Social Work and recipient of the NYU Distinguished Teaching Award. She is a Distinguished Scholar in Social Work in the National Academies of Practice in Washington, D C Dr Tosone is also Co-Director of the NYU Trauma-Informed Clinical Practice Program Previously, she served as the Founding Director of NYU’s DSW Program in Clinical Social Work Dr Tosone is Editor Emerita of the Clinical Social Work Journal, having served for 15 years as its Editor-in-Chief She serves as Series Editor for the Essential Clinical Social Work Series, published by Springer Dr Tosone completed her psychoanalytic training at the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health in New York City where she was the recipient of the Postgraduate Memorial Award
Her area of research is shared trauma, referring to the dual impact of collective trauma on the clinician. During her career, Dr. Tosone has delivered over 300 national and international presentations in various venues.

Dr. Deblinger, is Co-Founder of the Child Abuse Research Education and Service (CARES) nstitute and a Professor of Psychiatry at Rowan Medicine in Stratford, New Jersey. Dr. Deblinger has been engaged in clinical work and research focusing on the impact and treatment f the effects of childhood trauma for almost 35 years. Her research has been funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation as well as other rganizations Treatment outcome research, conducted by Dr Deblinger and her colleagues udith Cohen, M D , and Anthony Mannarino, Ph D led to the development of Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), an evidence based treatment with documented efficacy n helping,children and adolescents overcome PTSD as well as related emotional and behavioral ifficulties Dr Deblinger also collaborated with colleagues from the Medical University of outh Carolina on the development of an introductory web-based TF-CBT training (www tfcbt2 musc edu) The efficacy of this model has been documented in 25 randomized trials and there has been widespread dissemination of training and consultation in this model across the nation and around the world. Dr. Deblinger’s work has been recognized with honors from the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

David Barry is a partner at Bowne Barry & Barry Law, a boutique law firm offering legal, ethical and business advice and representation to New Jersey's licensed mental health professionals, including the defense of licensing board actions He is an adjunct professor in the social work programs at both Rutgers University (MSW and DSW programs) and Seton Hall University (BSW program), teaching courses on the intersection of law, ethics and practice. He frequently provides continuing education presentations to mental health professionals of various licensures throughout New Jersey. He has presented at national, state and local conferences
Dr. Cuseglio is an associate professor at Monmouth University. He has maintained a private psychotherapy practice for several years where he combines a psychodynamic treatment approach with mindfulness-based practices. Dr. Cuseglio formerly served as a high school social worker for 9 years in an urban school district working primarily with Latino adolescents and families He was previously a field supervisor for MSW students for several years Given his extensive experience working with youth, Dr Cuseglio regularly offers mental health training to court appointed advocates for children in the foster care system.
Susan Menahem is the Executive Clinical Director at the Institute for Personal Growth (IPG), and an IPG veteran, having first joined in 2001 as a therapist. She assumed her current role in 2016, and now oversees the supervision and training of IPG’s dozens of therapists, organizes their in-services and in-house supervision sessions, oversees their clinical staff on a day-to-day basis, and much more On top of all that, she also remains one of IPG's regular therapists, maintaining a full caseload of clients herself
uan Rios is an assistant professor at Seton Hall University. He has presented nationally nd internationally at various Social Work conferences As a practitioner scholar, he elieves in the importance of integrating theoretical knowledge to practice in the field of ocial work His academic mission is to ensure his students are constantly applying cholastic thought with applied learning Dr Rios has experience in both non-profit and overnment sectors and presently serves as the Clinical Director of a multiservice pecialty practice and as a clinical consultant to community mental health agencies.
Crystal is an educator, an advocate, a survivor, and a self-proclaimed thriver! For the past 25 years she has been driven by her personal experiences of trauma to elevate and amplify the voices of individuals and communities, to promote healing and opportunities to move from surviving to thriving Crystal has worked alongside professionals to create trauma informed, culturally inclusive and person-centered spaces Her work experiences include advocacy within the child welfare system, oversight of child and youth programs, crisis hotline response, delivery of community based mental health services and implementing trauma informed strategies and programs for school districts. NASW-NJ is soliciting proposals for presentation at our next statewide continuing education conference in 2025. We encourage you to share your knowledge and experience with your colleagues through a two-or four-hour workshop You will not only receive maximum exposure by presenting at the statewide conference, but you will have the opportunity to engage and enlighten other social workers
Workshop proposals are assigned for CE credits as clinical, general, ethics, opioids, and/or social and cultural competence. While proposals should include elements of the determined topic areas, NASW is committed to ensuring that all workshops actively infuse a cultural competence and social justice framework into its content
Five years of experience in the particular area of instruction; OR a graduate degree in the particular area (an MSW is sufficient); AND
Certification or licensure as a social worker, psychologist, Board certified psychiatrist, Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor or Medical Doctor.

Here’s a few ways you can volunteer with us:
Serve as a Unit Leader – NASW-NJ has units across the state to provide members with regionally based networking and educational opportunities. As a volunteer chair or co-chair, you can help plan and coordinate events that bring value to our members.
Serve on a Committee – Committees are a great way to learn more about the inner workings of our professional organization and help shape programs and policies These are one-year appointments and typically meet via phone or Zoom on a monthly basis.
Serve as a Shared Interest Group
Facilitator – Social work is one of the most diverse professions, and our Shared Interest Groups allow members in similar practice-areas to talk through shared experiences, challenges, opportunities, and to network. As a facilitator, you can help guide the group, coordinate meetings, and lead the discussion
Serve on the Board of Directors – Lead and serve our organization at the highest level! Board positions are elected by member vote and serve one to two-year appointments. Our Board meets bi-monthly and is active in conversations, dialogue, and Chapter governance in-between meetings

You should be an NASW-NJ member and a social worker (but if you’re an associate member, we can talk with you about those qualifications as well!) Social workers are in every aspect of our community and we hope our leadership is as diverse as our membership.
