ACLU Claims Federal Agencies Set a ‘Trap’ to Deport Immigrants — See page 2 —

JUDGE REGINALD BODDIE IMPRESSED BY INTERNS’ PERFORMANCE AT MOCK TRIAL: Justice Reginald Boddie (center in black robes) said that the students from the Brooklyn courts’ Summer Youth Employment Program who participated in a mock trial last Wednesday knew their CPLR (Civil Practice Law and Rules) better than he expected them to and added that he wouldn’t be surprised if some of the students went on to careers in the Photo courtesy of KCDA-DPA courts. ACLU Claims Federal Agencies Set `Trap’ to Deport Immigrants By Phillip Marcelo | Associated Press

Federal immigration agencies have launched a coordinated campaign to arrest and deport immigrants seeking to become legal U.S. residents through marriage, according to documents released this week in a class-action lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union. The documents, which include depositions and correspondence from federal officials, show the extent to which officials for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services have been coordinating with their counterparts at Immigration and Customs Enforcement to facilitate arrests at citizenship offices in New England. The ACLU, in its arguments, criticizes the efforts as a deportation “trap” that violates the constitutional rights of immigrants otherwise following the rules to become legal residents. “The government created this path for them to seek a green card,” Matthew Segal, legal director for the ACLU of Massachusetts, said in an interview Tuesday. “The government can’t create that path and then arrest folks for following that path.” ICE spokesman John Mohan responded that allegations of “inappropriate coordination” between the two agencies are “unfounded” and that coordination between the two Department of Homeland Security agencies is “lawful and legitimate.” He declined to elaborate, citing the pending

litigation. USCIS spokesman Michael Bars declined to comment on the legal filing, but said his agency, in general, notifies law enforcement of individuals with an outstanding warrant or removal order and leaves it to them to decide if an arrest is necessary. The ACLU lawsuit argues that Homeland Security regulations created under former President Barack Obama allow immigrants with U.S.-citizen spouses to stay in the country while they seek a green card — even if they’re already subject to deportation. “That regulation is still the law of the land,” Segal said Tuesday. “So arresting these folks is not about law and order. These are people with a path to legalization and the government is trying to block that.” The federal government, in seeking to dismiss the lawsuit, argues in part that federal District Court has no jurisdiction in the matter. The ACLU’s more than 250-page legal brief includes emails between ICE officials outlining how it coordinates arrests with USCIS in New England.

Andrew Graham, a Bostonbased ICE officer, said the agency generally receives from USCIS lists of immigrants seeking legal residency who have already been ordered for deportation, had re-entered the country illegally or were considered “an egregious criminal alien.” Graham said ICE then works with USCIS to schedule interviews so that ICE agents can be present to make an arrest. He noted ICE prefers to spread out the interviews to ease the workload on its agents and to prevent generating

“negative media interest” from the arrests. “At the end of the day we are in the removal business and it’s our job to locate and arrest them,” Graham wrote in part. The ACLU’s legal brief is the latest in the class-action suit filed earlier this year on behalf of immigrants who have been or fear being separated from their U.S.-citizen spouses. The case will be argued Aug. 20 in Boston federal court and names five couples, including lead plaintiffs Lilian Calderon and Luis Gordillo, of

Rhode Island. Gordillo is a U.S. citizen, but Calderon is a native of Guatemala who came to the country with her family at the age of 3. She was ordered to leave in 2002 after her father was denied asylum. The 30-year-old mother of two was detained by ICE in January after she and her husband attended an interview at the USCIS office in Johnston, Rhode Island, to confirm their marriage. Calderon was released in February after the ACLU challenged the detention.

Brooklyn Street’s Renaming after Haitian Hero Brooklyn Judge Jean-Jacques Dessalines Stirs Controversy Impressed by Interns By Mary Frost

Brooklyn PHOENIX

The New York City Council voted last Wednesday to approve a controversial proposal to co-name a Brooklyn street after a man who led Haiti’s historic slave rebellion — but who also brutally massacred thousands of innocents. Jean-Jacques Dessalines became emperor of Haiti after the successful fight for independence against the French Army in 1804. After the victory, however, Dessalines ordered his soldiers to slaughter nearly every remaining French man, woman and child on the island. The co-naming, proposed by Councilmember Jumaane Williams (D-Flatbush), covers a 2-mile section of Rogers Avenue from Farragut Road to Eastern Parkway, within the “Little Haiti” Business and Cultural District in Flatbush. Brooklyn is home to the largest percentage of foreign-born Haitian residents in New York state, with more than 40 percent of the foreign-born population residing in Flatbush. The legislation reads, “Jean-Jacques Dessalines is one of the founding fathers of Haiti, having taken charge of the Haitian Revolution and leading them to victory in defeating the French Napoleon Army in 1804 … The Haitian Revolution became the first slave revolt in modern history to result in an independent nation.” According to a release put out by Williams, Dessalines remains a “very popular symbol of Haitian nationalism.” “Jean-Jacques Dessalines was a revolutionary who fought for his people and overthrew an oppressive regime who brutally enslaved and persecuted the Haitian people,” Williams said. Williams credited Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte, the first Haitian-

American woman elected into office in New York City, for fiercely advocating for the co-naming. The measure also received the support of other Councilmembers including Speaker Cory Johnson and Majority Leader Laurie Cumbo. Bichotte called Dessalines “one of the greatest heroes of the modern world. “Jean-Jacques Dessalines’ remarkable leadership impacted countries around the world in gaining their independence,” she said in a statement.

Hero or Monster? But others call some of Dessalines’ actions monstrous. The Massacre of 1804 resulted in the death of 3,000 to 5,000 men, women, and children, according to Philippe Girard, author of “The Slaves Who Defeated Napoleon: Toussaint Louverture and the Haitian War of Independence 1801-1804.” Under the orders of Dessalines, who feared the French regaining the upper hand and reinstating slavery, Haitian soldiers moved from house to house, first killing men and, in a second wave, entire families. The massacre polarized the Southern U.S. public on the question of the abolition of slavery, according to Kevin Julius in “The Abolitionist Decade, 1829-1838: A Year-by-Year History of Early Events in the Antislavery Movement.” Slave-owners feared a similar genocide might happen to them if American slaves were freed.

questioning whether a man responsible for so much misery should be honored in modern-day Brooklyn. Historians point out that the French treated their Haitian slaves barbarically, implying, perhaps, that two wrongs make a right. Seth Barron, in City Journal, notes, “This barbarism came as a coda to a vicious revolutionary war, one attended by savage acts against a slave population fighting for its liberty. So it is perhaps not for us to condemn the early Haitian leaders.” Barron asks, however, “But do we need to celebrate them?” Responding to the criticism, Williams said on Thursday, “Dessalines is a leader who liberated his people from a brutal regime and enslavement. The French then attempted to force the Haitian people to repay them for the loss of what they considered human property — essentially, seeking to reenslave his people and he rebelled. Those who are now trying to create controversy are conflating fighting against oppression with imposing it.” Lindsay Twa, professor at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD, said that Dessalines proved to be such a despot that his own soldiers “ambushed their leader and rendered his body to pieces.” Twa writes, “Legends state that the madwoman Defilee, possibly Dessalines’s spurned lover and a sutler to his troops, gathered, buried and guarded the emperor’s remains in a final act of restorative devotion.” Twa adds that within the Haitian folk religion of Voodoo, Dessalines has become a saint known as Ogou Desalin, “a powerful guardian and fierce conqueror.” See photo on page 4

At Mock Trial By Rob Abruzzese Brooklyn PHOENIX

Every year student interns from the Brooklyn courts’ Summer Youth Employment Program participate in a mock trial, but this year’s group was so good that it impressed Supreme Court Justice Reginald Boddie. “They were on top of it,” Justice Boddie said. “They made motions that normal attorneys would make and always at the appropriate time. That caught me totally off guard. I was shocked. When they moved for a directed verdict that really surprised me.” The summer internships last approximately six weeks and interns who participate in the mock trial start preparing for the mock trial almost immediately. Three court employees, Inga O’Neale, Xavier Carr and Tyedanita McLean, helped prep the students for a trial. “The students are always so well prepared that I treated it like I would any other case when it came time to prepare,” Boddie said. “The students were fabulous. They were well prepared, were very detailed about the witness statements and what the witnesses testified to. They were very detailed in their presentations. They presented rules of evidence and they followed it. There was one rule that I actually didn’t remember and they reminded me that a witness’ testimony wasn’t included.” Justice Boddie gave a lot of credit to the students, but also the three mock trial coaches. “They made my job easy because they really taught the kids the rules and got the witnesses to stick to the script,” Boddie said. “I think they really prepared them all well.”

Black Americans Aren’t Buying Omarosa’s Turn Against Trump By Jesse J. Holland The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — For years, Omarosa Manigault Newman stood at Donald Trump’s side, making her deeply unpopular with African-Americans who see her as a sellout for aligning herself with a president who has hurled one insult after another at black people. Her falling out with Trump and her decision to call him a racist as she sells her new book — and in turn, his calling her a “dog” — have not been enough for many African-Americans to invite her back to the family picnic. Too little, too late, many said. “Her tell-all mea culpa won’t win her any brownie points with most blacks,” said Earl Ofari Hutchinson, author of the book “Why Black Lives Do Matter.” ‘’Their loathing of Omarosa is virtually frozen in stone. She’s still roundly lambasted as a two-bit opportunist, a racial sellout and an ego driven hustler.” Few in the black community immediately rushed to defend Manigault Newman after she wrote a book titled “Unhinged” about her time in the White House. It paints a damning picture of Trump, claiming without evidence that tapes exist of him using the N-word as he filmed “The Apprentice” reality series, on which she costarred. She has since stepped up her attacks on Trump as she promotes her book, telling The Associated Press on Tuesday that the president is “a racist, a misogynist, a bigot.” “I want to see this nation united

as opposed to divided,” she said. “I don’t want to see a race war, as Donald Trump does.” The deep hostility that AfricanAmericans harbor for Manigault Newman stems largely from her defense of the president or her public silence as he repeatedly attacked the American citizenship of former President Barack Obama; insulted various minority groups and described some African nations as “shithole” countries. He has also insulted prominent blacks like U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters and NBA superstar LeBron James, said that “many sides” are to blame for the violence at last year’s white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, and ripped African-American athletes for protesting racial injustice. As the highest-profile AfricanAmerican on the White House staff, she pushed back on accusations that Trump was racist. She once told PBS’ “Frontline,” “Every critic, every detractor will have to bow down under President Trump.” In the book, Manigault Newman suggests she joined Trump’s campaign — despite the misgivings she said she had about her longtime friend and mentor — after an arrangement to join Democrat Hillary Clinton’s campaign fell through and left her feeling spurned. She writes that Trump and his campaign were “eager for my help” and she wanted to experience working on a campaign at a “high level.” And, “since Trump had little chance of winning, it would be ‘no harm, no foul’ for me to have worked with the

campaign for however long it lasted,” she wrote. She now says he “used” her, calling him a “con” who “has been masquerading as someone who is actually open to engaging with diverse communities” but is “truly a racist.” Trump ratcheted up his rhetoric against Manigault Newman on Tuesday. “When you give a crazed, crying lowlife a break, and give her a job at the White House, I guess it just didn’t work out,” Trump said. “Good work by General Kelly for quickly firing that dog!” John Kelly is the White House chief of staff. Many condemned the president and his repeated attempts to compare minorities with animals, but there was little defense of Manigault Newman — unlike when Trump attacked NBA superstar LeBron James in recent weeks. “We should not mistake anything that has happened here as to be Omarosa in any way purporting be a benefit to the African-American community,” said Aisha Moodie-Mills, a Democratic strategist. More than 8 in 10 blacks said they thought Trump was racist in a Febru-

ary poll by The Associated PressNORC Center for Public Affairs Research. More than 9 in 10 of African-Americans disapproved of how Trump is handling his job as president. Manigault Newman has been associated with Trump for more than a decade. Minimal association with Trump, like taking a photograph with the president in the Oval Office, was enough for protesters to decry Historically Black Colleges and University presidents on their own campuses last year. Black ministers who met with Trump are being criticized by their colleagues and some by their congregations. Among the criticized is Darrell Scott, an African-American pastor from Ohio who declared “This is probably going be ... the most problack president that we’ve had in our lifetime.” Raynard Jackson, a black Republican who has worked on GOP presidential, gubernatorial and local campaigns, said Manigault Newman secretly recording Trump and other White House officials will make her a pariah in conservative circles as well.

“There is absolutely no way she can redeem herself. Who is going to trust her ever again?” Jackson said. “Recording someone under these circumstances is the political equivalent of spitting on a man.” Conservative commentator Armstrong Williams said he’s known Manigault Newman since she was 19 and will always consider her a friend. But “Omarosa can’t be trusted,” he said. “There’s an issue when you can’t be trusted and can’t be loyal.” As her feud with Trump intensified, Manigault Newman’s relationship with the black community became the topic of many conversations among African-Americans, especially on social media. Some of them offered hope for Manigault Newman, however conditional. If Omarosa “is the one to get some traction on people seeing how truly raggedy this administration is enough to take action... we should reconsider letting her get a to-go plate from the cookout. Someone can take it to her,” tweeted Bari A. Williams, an Oakland lawyer and business operations executive.

or had to pay. Once the boardwalk was opened, however, people from all walks of life, all races and religions, came together here. And their differences really weren’t as important in this place.” With its status as NYC’s 11th scenic landmark established, the Riegelmann Boardwalk will require additional layers of oversight before significant alterations can take place. Moreover, the city landmark law requires there to be a boardwalk between Ocean Parkway and West 37th Street in perpetuity. According to Brooklyn Parks Commissioner Marty Maher, the Reigelmann Boardwalk is 2.4 miles long, comprised of 1.3 million boards, which are held in place by 18 million nails and screws. “I had some extra time on my hands,” Maher said with a laugh, “so I counted each one.” Henceforth, each one of them is now protected by NYC law.

Gopee, Kahlil Robert Irving, Alex Jackson, Devin N. Morris, Kenny Rivero, Shikeith and Vaughn Spann, curated by Project Space Director, Tess Sol Schwab. Taking inspiration from the numerous block parties that enliven our neighborhood in the summer, the exhibition takes a more critical look at the importance of these community gatherings. Not just a simple get together, block parties strengthen community ties and often function as a town hall to discuss larger issues affecting the neighborhood including violence, immigration, sexuality and race. When: Tuesdays-Saturdays through August 25th, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Where: Prospect Park/ Jenkins Johnson Gallery (207 Ocean Avenue) BETWEEN BLACK & WHITE FROM HERE TO THERE An aspect of Carl E. Hazlewood’s intriguing, ongoing project UNSAYABLE. While many of the things he makes are ephemeral, they tend to respond to the light, space and surfaces where they are installed. Beside the painted/ constructed environments he creates on occasion, Hazlewood makes discrete/ specific ‘things’. Most transmute into defined formal objects; shape, scale, light, color, materials, etc., all are manipulated as a way to bring the work alive in the presence of the viewer. Using the events of 9/11, the 2003 Northeast Blackout, Hurricane Sandy and other severe weather events as examples, the exhibition reveals the critical role that mass transit personnel play in preparing for and responding to

natural and man-made disasters. Through a vibrant display of objects, photographs, media, and personal accounts, the exhibition highlights the technical and professional skills needed to restore public transportation service and get New Yorkers moving again after crisis strikes. When: Tuesdays-Sundays through September, Mon-Fri 10 a.m. 4 p.m., Sat-Sun 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Where: Downtown Brooklyn/ NYC Transit Museum (99 Schermerhorn St) TATIANA AROCHA’S: NIGHT MOUNTAINS Inspired by her childhood journeys into Colombia’s rainforests with her anthropologist father, Tatiana Arocha’s multidisciplinary work stems from a desire to celebrate the landscape’s astounding biodiversity. Her immersive murals surround the viewer with nature rendered in monochromatic tones, a color palette that references historic naturalist engravings and warns of a future in which the rainforest exists only in the past. By installing depictions of nature in urban settings, Arocha’s murals draw parallels between the diverse ecosystems of Colombia and the cultural flourishing

of her current Brooklyn neighborhood. When: Tuesdays-Sundays through October 2nd, 10 a.m. 6 p.m.; Sunday: 12 – 6 p.m. Where: Fort Greene/BRIC House Hallway (647 Fulton Street) EMPIRE SKATE: THE BIRTHPLACE OF ROLLER DISCO Empire Skate: The Birthplace of Roller Disco brings the world of Empire to life, exploring its role as a cultural icon and a community hub. Artifacts, archival materials, video, and first-hand interviews, come together to share the stories of the people who skated at Empire during the 70s and 80s and will immerse visitors in the sights and sounds of the rink. Through the examined histories of and around Empire, connections between roller skating and larger narratives of race, class, and urbanization in America are uncovered. Beyond the roller disco movement, the exhibit traces the history of roller skating in the United States, highlighting the diversity of rinks around the country and the unique history of skating in New York City, which was home to over 20 rinks at its skating peak When: Thursdays-Sundays through October 14th, 12 – 6 p.m.

New York– based Chilean artist and poet Cecilia Vicuña has devoted a significant part of her artistic practice to studying, interpreting, and reactivating the quipus, which were banned by the Spanish during their colonization of South America. Drawing on her indigenous heritage, Vicuña channels this ancient, sensorial mode of communication into immersive installations and participatory performances When: Wednesdays-Sundays through November 25th, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., Thursdays: 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. Where: Crown Heights/ Brooklyn Museum (200 Eastern Parkway) BROOKLYN: A NEW HOME, A NEW LIFE This exhibition features stories about historical Brooklynites: Harriet Judson, John Roebling, Nathan Handwerker, and Shirley Chisholm, as well as Ravi Ragbir, a

Currents News and Crux, a Catholic news website, are partnering to provide in-depth coverage of the World Meeting of Families in Dublin, Ireland next week. Held triennially, the celebration hosts hundreds of thousands of people and is the world’s largest Catholic gathering of families. The meeting, from August 21-26, will feature an open-air Mass with Pope Francis, as well as workshops and presentations. It comes in the wake of a vote to reform abortion laws and takes place nearly a decade after Ireland’s clerical sex abuse scandal first broke. Once deemed the most “Catholic country,” Ireland is witnessing its church advocating a new chapter and mission for the family in the context of the 21st century. During the weeklong event, Currents News and Crux will explore theology, doctrine, liturgy, practices and traditions of Catholicism in the context of the life of modern-day Catholics, giving full voice to disagreements and challenges facing the church and believers. The Diocese of Brooklyn’s DeSales Media produces Currents News. Currents’ Liz Faublas will anchor coverage from New York,

while correspondents Michelle Powers and Tim Harfmann will report from Ireland. Members of Crux’s editorial team will offer analysis and expertise. Concurrently, Currents News’ reports will appear on Crux’s website. Television coverage will take place from Monday, Aug. 20 to Friday, Aug. 24 on NET-TV’s Currents News at 7:30 p.m. EDT.

Extended live coverage will begin with Pope Francis’s arrival in Dublin on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 5:30 a.m. EDT, and then again on Sunday, Aug. 26 at 4:15 a.m. Currents News airs on NETTV in the New York City area on Spectrum, channel 97; Optimum, channel 30; and Verizon Fios, channel 48. Live streaming is available at netny.tv.

Zion German Evangelical Lutheran Church and Pastor Klaus Dieter Gress welcomed the Vivida Banda Youth Choir from Germany last week as part of the ensemble’s first U.S. tour. Vivida Banda, whose youths and parents describe themselves as a big intergenerational family, sings in several languages. They opened their full-length, twohour concert on the outdoor steps of the church on Henry Street with a spiritual, “Jesus in the Morning.” The ensemble then moved into the sanctuary, reprising this opening hymn and offering a wide repertoire of English-language pieces, including “What a Wonderful World” (made famous by Louis Armstrong), “You Raise Me Up” and “The Storm Is Passing Over,” as well as German and Swedish songs. They crunched a demanding tour into about three days, also singing at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. The youths are also part of the Singschule of the Chöre Peterskirche Weinheim, where they begin their musical training as early as toddlers. They describe the Singschule as an intergenerational family that offers several different types of choir experiences, from toddler and youth choirs to elder choir and the Adult Kantorei in between. They also have bands and a Gospel choir. The choir’s founder/choral director is Anne Christine Langenbach. Her husband Simon is piano accompanist. Their son Jakob plays trumpet. The youths’ biggest surprise about New York City: “the food,” Miriam, a choir member, told INBrooklyn. “I think there are a lot of small things standing out, for example, how different the food is and how everyone is so nice. But I think what really stood out to me was when we went to Times Square yesterday in the evening—because it is way bigger than everything I have ever seen in my life. The [food] portions are bigger and there are so many more items. You know, you don’t just order a burger, you order a burger and then you order four different toppings for that.” Her choirmate Isabelle quickly found a corpus metaphor for New York City: “There are just so many pieces, so many different stories coming together as whole, and if you walk down the streets you see so many different situations of life coming together, it’s just beautiful.”

Come See Recently Sold Homes in Manhattan Beach By Lore Croghan INBrooklyn

Go big or go home. That's the unofficial motto of developers in Manhattan Beach. Whenever we're hit with a sudden bout of nostalgia for Miami, where we lived many years ago, we head to Manhattan Beach for a stroll. Many big, beautiful houses on this Brooklyn peninsula remind us of South Florida mansions. Other homes, though not evocative of Miami, are also big, beautiful and interesting to look at. Even on the steamiest summer day, it's great fun to walk around Manhattan Beach. Atlantic Ocean breezes will keep you from overheating and keeling over. The other day, we went and tracked down some lovely houses — and a development site — that changed hands recently. We also snapped photos of Manhattan Beach's most eye-catching houses. Head to Manhattan Beach for a Staycation Day By Lore Croghan INBrooklyn

Staycations are good for the soul. Sometimes you really need a quick getaway from your life, but spare cash for an airplane ticket and a hotel room is in short supply. Any summer staycation worthy of the name calls for at least one day at the beach. Coney Island is dreamy, of course, an ideal staycation getaway for New York City residents. We're obsessively devoted to its famous landmarks like the Wonder Wheel and the Parachute Jump. And a walk down its cherished Boardwalk will take you to Brighton Beach, where you can eat borscht at beachfront Russian

cafes. But today we're going to extol the virtues of Brooklyn's other point of access to the Atlantic Ocean — Manhattan Beach. That's the name of both an excellent public beach and the surrounding peninsular neighborhood. A sign posted on Oriental Boulevard, which runs through the middle of the neighborhood, refers to Manhattan Beach as “Brooklyn by the Sea. We like the sound of that. Manhattan Beach Park is a 40-acre recreation area that opened in 1955. The city created it to help alleviate crowded conditions on Coney Island's beach. The parkland in Manhattan Beach had belonged to the federal government, which had acquired it during World War II for use as the Coast Guard and Maritime Training Station. The beach is beautiful. When we went for a visit on a prime beach-going day — a hot, sunny August Sunday — we found a mellow, happy scene.

This Sale Broke the $3 Million Threshold

A developer named Corbin Group Inc. sold a newly built stucco house at 228 Corbin Place in March for $3.3 million, city Finance Department records indicate. In 2016, Corbin Group Inc., with Salvatore Calcagno as its authorized signatory, had bought the property for $1.6 million from Corbin Corp. with Munzer Elayyan as president, Finance Department records show. Brodmore LLC with Vadeem Brodsky as member and Corbin Corp. had jointly purchased the property for $1.2 million in 2007. It was vacant residential land at that time, the deed indicates. In 2016, Brodmore LLC transferred its one-third stake in 228 Corbin Place to Corbin Corp. The public record doesn't show how much money, if any, changed hands in this transaction. The couple who sold the site to Brodmore LLC and Corbin Corp. had inherited it in 1994, Finance Department records show. The house is near the Atlantic Ocean shoreline.

By the Sea, by the Sea, by the Beautiful Sea

* According to Finance Department records, on another block that dead-ends in a scenic way at the Atlantic Ocean, a beautiful house at 221 Coleridge St. sold for $2.5 million in April 2017.

That price also comes from Finance Department records, of course. • On the next street over, on a block that also ends at the Atlantic Ocean, a handsome brick house at 267 Dover St. sold for $2.45 million in May 2017, Finance Department records indicate. This home was constructed in the late 1990s. The sellers had paid $2.2 million for it in 2015, Finance Department records show. Before that, 267 Dover St. had been sold for $990,000 in 2004. • On the next street, on yet another block with a scenic seaside dead-end, an LLC purchased a house that has fallen into disrepair and has an enormous yard for $2.2 million, Finance Department records indicate. The transaction was an estate sale. It closed in May. The address of the house is 228 Exeter St. In June, the purchaser filed a Buildings Department application for a demolition permit.

The seller had bought the property for $1.73 million in 2006, Finance Department records show. • A house on the corner of Oriental Boulevard, which runs through the center of Manhattan Beach, sold in May for $2,565,990, Finance Department records show. The address is 195 Kensington St. Buildings Department filings suggest the seller had enlarged the house after buying it in 2014. According to Finance Department records, that purchase had been made for $1.2 million.

Head to Manhattan Beach for a Staycation Day — Continued from page 18INB — There were lots of people ensconced on the sand beneath beach umbrellas, and lots more splashing in the refreshing waves. But it wasn't crowded in a claustrophobia-inducing way.

Nostalgia for Miami Beach

You're never, ever going to think any beach at the north end of the Eastern Seaboard resembles Miami Beach. It's located in a tropical zone, so the sea is a pretty color and palm trees abound. Its Art Deco-style hotels and homes will knock your socks off. But. Keep this in mind the next time you're hit with a wave of nostalgia for Miami Beach. You can find echoes of it on the streets of Manhattan Beach. Numerous houses in the neighborhood have a Miami Moderne look. They're brightly painted stucco that's beautiful in hot sunlight, have sleek lines and are situated just a block or two from the ocean. Their presence makes a stroll through the neighborhood an entertaining part of a staycation day. One of our favorite Manhattan Beach houses can be found at 293 Amherst St., right on the ocean. It's got a white stucco and glass-brick facade and is designed with lots of curving

walls. It reminds us of the glamorous architecture that was showcased on “Miami Vice,” the iconic 1980s TV series. Another great Miami Beach-style house is at 295 Corbin Place, which also stands beside the ocean — as does 293 Coleridge St.

Which Way to the Spanish Hacienda?

Also, check out Miami Beach-style 305 Hampton Ave., which is a golden-hued house a block away from the shore of Sheepshead Bay. Just down the street, 321 Hampton Ave. looks like a Spanish hacienda in a very Miami Beach kind of way. There are also eye-catching houses in other architectural styles. Some are Tudor-style designs. Some are big and elaborate. We love those, too. Some of the beautiful houses near the shoreline were damaged by Superstorm Sandy and haven't yet been repaired. We can imagine the anguish these homes' owners have been through, and we're saddened by it. When your day is done, you can walk across a picturesque, blue-painted footbridge that connects Manhattan Beach to the neighborhood of Sheepshead Bay. You'll wind up on Emmons Avenue, where there are numerous charming restaurants and cafes. Some have outside seating.

ST. FRANCIS ANIMAL HOSPITAL:

Theatre for Kids and Families Opens in Park Slope By John Alexander INBROOKLYN

Play Nice Theatre has begun its season of lighthearted musicals with positive, life-affirming messages about cooperation and kindness. And they’re looking for their July/August cast, musicians, and backstage helpers. Relocated from Manhattan, this all-volunteer company’s rehearsals and meetings reflect their mission and message by encouraging its mixed-generation cast and crew (ages 6 to 106) to interact socially and share stories of their own lives on and off stage. In a welcoming atmosphere, the experienced and new Play Nice actors and crew are encouraged to come early and linger after assigned rehearsal slots in order to get to know each other, help each other memorize their lines, do school homework and play games. Some may choose to help with scenery painting or prop-making. All ticket sales from main stage shows ($10 admission) is donated to local charities, a prime motivation for many participants who find it rewarding to help raise money for those less fortunate through donating their time and talent. According to theatre founder Rob Lester, the cast and crew are like a second family. “Working on a show with

friendly people is fun and satisfying,” he says. The Brooklyn Eagle stopped by the new location at 89 Fourth Avenue, five blocks from Barclays Center, where the two-act musical “The Three Little Pigs Buy a Brownstone in Brooklyn” is running on weekends (2 p.m. Saturdays, 3:30 p.m. Sundays, through July 1). The Eagle is mentioned prominently in the Brooklyn-centric script in Scene 6 and the newspaper is used as a prop as well. The show’s target audience is ages six and up, with plenty of humor adults will appreciate. “Two six-year-olds are among the actors, with the oldest member more than ten times their age, and the family idea is reflected literally: the cast includes two brothers who play two of the pigs; a mother and her son have a scene together as an older pig

and hedgehog; two actors are cousins,” we’re informed. Original lyrics are set to public domain melodies including old folk songs and classic children’s tunes. The show, which emphasizes “being a good neighbor,” plus patience, perseverance, and pig puns runs through July 1, will be followed by show after show, starting with the summer musical about kids and counselors at an unusual summer camp, titled “Not a Happy Camper.” The theatre welcomes audition appointments, visits, donations of costumes and supplies, and all inquiries throughout the year. Acting classes, puppet shows, concerts, one-day free workshops, variety shows, and special family events are planned and a fundraising concert on July 20.
