More Young Americans Want Moms to Stay Home—Why? By Schuyler Velasco Christian Science Monitor

Brianna Hoffman had a lot going on growing up. She was a three-sport athlete, played multiple instruments in the school band, and pulled late nights and constant rehearsals working stage crew for her high school’s theater productions in Hampstead, N.H. She couldn’t have done it all, she says, without her mom, who was mostly stay-at-home while her father worked in sales at a small power equipment company. “It was better to have one parent [at home],” she says. “My mom was always there, she could help me with my homework and drive me to stuff. I wouldn’t have been able to have all of those experiences if she wasn’t there to … I don’t want to say be my taxi, but we’ve always joked about that a little bit.” Hoffman, now a senior at Syracuse University in western New York, thinks her family’s arrangement, with one parent working and one wrangling childcare and household duties, is ideal. “I don’t think it matters which parent stays home, but it was better to have someone there,” she says. And her views on the matter are increasingly common among people her age. In fact, among young adults, support for this type of traditional family structure has been on the rise for the past 20 years while a preference for two working parents is falling out of favor, according to a batch of reports released in March by the Council on Contemporary Families.

In one survey, which has tracked the attitudes of a cross-section of the country’s high school seniors for the past four decades, only 42 percent of respondents in 1994 thought a family in which the father worked and the mother stayed at home was the “best” possible arrangement. By 2014, that was the majority view, with 58 percent support. What’s happening isn’t all about turning back the clock on gender roles in U.S. society. The shift may be more about the ideal of a parent — mother or father — being at home: At the same time that young Americans’ views on what the family dynamic should be are skewing more traditional, there is a strengthening penchant for women to have equal opportunities in the workplace. Still, the trend line on parental roles, which holds true for female and (more so) for male respondents, has confounded researchers, and anyone who would expect social views to get uniformly more progressive among younger generations. “Kids today answer these questions the same way my cohort did during the Reagan administration,” says David Cotter, a sociologist who co-authored the new analysis of high school seniors’ attitudes in the Monitoring the Future survey, which has been conducted since 1975. “I don’t think I would have guessed that. I’d guess that it would become more egalitarian over time.” Experts have come up with a few possible reasons for the disconnect: The U.S. population has an increasing share of Latinos, who have more traditional views on gender and family, for example. But more prominent are theories that have to do with family stability and the failure of the U.S. workplace to adapt to the needs of families with two working parents. Out of sheer economic necessity, those are now more the rule than the exception: Both parents work in 66 percent of married couples with children, but have higher expenses (like health and child care), than single-income families did a few decades ago. At the same time, the share of women as the sole or primary breadwinner is increasing, but that trend is present primarily among lower-income households, so it’s not exactly a sign of have-it-all moms on the rise.

Even families with more financial stability, the experts argue, are overextended. “Some youths who saw their parents experiencing disagreements and stresses as they tried to integrate work and family without supportive policies may have concluded that a male-breadwinner arrangement would have made family life easier,” writes sociologist Dan Carlson in response to the new research. Hoffman, the college student, agrees. “I have friends my age with two parents working, and it doesn’t seem like they are nearly as close with their parents,” she says. “It’s not dinner with your parents, it’s sitting with a microwave dinner, watching TV.” “In the 1950s, one two-parent family was expected to give about 40 hours a week to the labor market,” says Barbara Risman, a sociology professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She says that essentially doubled as women entered the workforce en masse in the 1980s, and in the 2000s the time commitment of work may seem greater still. “No really successful worker is assumed to have responsibilities to anyone but himself,” she says. “If you feel the negative consequences of parents not being able to juggle everything, there’s a way in which you might think, this doesn’t work, let’s go back to the good old days.” That may be counterintuitive, observers note: For one, health-care, college, and other costs are showing no signs of returning to 1950s levels. And two-income households are better able to weather times of financial stress, such as a job loss or health crisis. “Our current lack of supportive institutions and policies to help families integrate work and family life has begun to take its toll,” he writes. “If something is not done soon to structurally support the egalitarian arrangements that research now shows to be best for most relationships, people may no longer want them to begin with.” But young adults’ attitudes toward gender aren’t entirely sliding back to the 1950s. Even as the preference for more traditional family roles is increasing, so is support for women to have equal footing in the workplace. Professor Cotter, of Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., analyzed responses of high school seniors along with Joanna Pepin at the University of Maryland. The two researchers found increased agreement, over time, with the idea that women and men should have equal opportunities in the workplace. Notably, they also found agreement that working mothers can have just as strong a bond with their children as stay-at-home moms.

GUEST EDITORIAL OPINION: Earth Day and Climate Change By State Sen. Kevin Parker For Brooklyn PHOENIX

It took just 68 days for former President Barack Obama’s policies to help combat against the effects of climate change to be undone ... Sixty-eight days. This was accomplished by the stroke of a pen as President Donald Trump signed an executive order, effectively destroying the Obama administration’s policies to fight climate change by reducing the amount of carbon emissions that contributes to air pollution. The pressure is mounting to give in, but now is the time to fight back. Five years ago, I watched the great state of New York pick up the pieces from a devastating hurricane. Sandy exacted damage on families physically and emotionally — destroying homes and memories all at once. For this reason, we cannot be bystanders in this fight as the evidence is overwhelming. Last year was the

hottest year on the planet, and Mother Earth will continue to be damaged unless we act now. Under the Climate Action Plan created by President Obama, the U.S. would take steps to decrease the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the country. As seen in the figure below, under the Climate Action Plan, GHG emissions would continue to keep falling. In 2009, the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) determined that GHG pollution threatened American health and welfare. The Clean Power Plan (CPP) was created to combat these issues, and its positive effects include a decrease in: • • • •

3,600 premature deaths 1,700 heart attacks 90,000 asthma attacks 300,000 missed workdays and school days

As Earth Day 2017 is upon us, we need to stand up against President Trump’s destructive policies that favor deregulation. His policies

against reducing GHG emissions undermine the attempt to protect our future generations’ health, clean air and overall livelihood. Research conducted over the past 30 years proves that air pollution has detrimental effects on the health of all people, yet President Trump is still willing to ignore the facts. His executive order also dis-

misses mitigation efforts to combat natural disasters such as severe flooding and heat waves. If we do not stand and fight, generations to come will pay the price. Earth Day 2017’s campaign is environmental and climate literacy, and our president is ignoring the reality of climate change and it comes at the expense of our home — Mother Earth. His new policies discourage innovative ideas for clean air, and different methods of creating renewable energy. The time to fight back is now while the EPA is developing its plan to replace the Clean Power Plan. We have no time to waste. The current president may disregard the effects of climate change, but we know as human beings that we have a moral obligation to protect our environment for future generations. The time to join the fight is NOW! _______________________________ Sen. Parker is a Democrat serving the neighborhoods of Park Slope, Flatbush, Ditmas Park, East Flatbush and Flatlands.

Brooklyn Pols Praise Small Business Services’ Outreach to Immigrants Continues from page 1 Called “Building Your Business in New York City: A Guide for Immigrant Entrepreneurs,” the guide was developed by SBS in partnership with Citi Community Development. It will be available in six languages; Spanish, Chinese, Haitian Creole, Russian, Korean and Bengali. The guide offers advice on topics such as signing a commercial lease, navigating government and understanding the rights of immigrant New Yorkers. “As an immigrant whose grandmother supported the family through entrepreneurship, I know first-hand that owning a business has the power to change lives,” said SBS Commissioner Gregg Bishop. “By making information and resources available to immigrant New Yorkers in six languages, we’re helping all of our people,

no matter their origin, pursue their dreams.” Brooklyn lawmakers who work with immigrants and the small business community were quick to praise the SBS effort. “Immigrant small business owners are at the heart of New York City’s economic vitality. Immigrant entrepreneurs create jobs, support families and serve our City’s diverse neighborhoods,” said Councilmember Carlos Menchaca (D-Sunset Park-Red Hook), chairman of the Committee on Immigration. “Opening a small business is still a major route for many immigrants in search of the American dream,” said Councilmember Robert E. Cornegy Jr. (D-Bed-Stuy). “Of the 148,000 NYC small businesses, 48 percent of the owners are foreign-born. The Immigrant Business Initiative Guide shows that our government supports and continues to place a high value on our immigrant entrepreneurs.”

Cornegy is the chairman of the Committee on Small Business. “Immigrant New Yorkers are an integral part of our economy, particularly our business community from Fortune 500 leaders to small business owners and everything in between,” said Nisha Agarwal, commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. “This new Immigrant Business Initiative Guide, available in six of the city’s most common languages, will help educate immigrant entrepreneurs about their rights as New Yorkers, financial planning and the technical ins-and-outs of owning and operating a business in our great city.” The guide offers advice on: • Rights as an immigrant New Yorker • Personal and business financial planning • Commercial space and lease considerations • Staying compliant with business regulations

• Technology tools and strategies • Identifying market needs, including opportunities to sell to government The new guide is part of the city’s Immigrant Business Initiative, an effort launched by Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2014. The program connects immigrant New Yorkers to business education services and offers one-on-one assistance. As part of the Immigrant Business Initiative, SBS works with partners that include the Business Outreach Center Network, Brooklyn Public Library, Renaissance Economic Development Corporation, Shorefront YM-YWHA and Sapna NYC, to provide one-on-one counseling and community outreach. _______________________________ The new guide is available at 1.nyc.gov/nycbusiness/article/immigrant/immigrant-business-initiative.

Eugene Seeks to Create Task Force for Troubled Youth By Paula Katinas Brooklyn PHOENIX

The city needs to take a stronger hand in dealing with troubled teens and young adults, according to Councilmember Mathieu Eugene, who has introduced legislation to create a special task force to look into the issue.

“We always say that the next generation is the future of this city, and because of that, we are obligated to do everything that we can do to provide them with the best opportunities that they need to become productive citizens,” Eugene said. Eugene, who has served as chairman of the Youth Services Committee since 2014, said the city should be doing more to help children and teenagers enjoy a better quality of life. His history of helping keep kids off the streets dates back more than 20 years. In 1994, Eugene founded a nonprofit organization called Youth Education and Sports (YES) after a chance encounter with a young

man on Flatbush Avenue. “He had a big knife. He was just 12 or 14 years old,” Eugene recalled in a 2015 interview with the Brooklyn PHOENIX. Eugene stopped the boy on the sidewalk to talk to him. “He said he wasn’t going to use the knife to attack anyone. He just wanted to be able to defend himself. I said to myself, ‘He does not want to be a criminal.’ That moment was the beginning of my organization,” Eugene told the PHOENIX.. The boy with the knife became one of the first members of YES, Eugene said. YES offered sports programs like basketball and martial arts. Eugene also added music, dance

and art programs. The organization operated out of several sites, including church gymnasiums. There were after-school programs, as well as a Saturday program that ran all day. “Young people couldn’t wait to come in,” Eugene told the PHOENIX. Citing his duties as a councilmember, Eugene no longer plays an active role at YES. But as chairman of the Youth Services Committee, he often invites program directors to come and testify about issues facing the city’s young people. “We have a moral obligation to provide young people with the resources to be the leaders of tomorrow. Otherwise, we will pay the consequences later on,” he said.

Under Eugene’s bill, the city would put together a task force to study the challenges that are preventing young people from ages 16-24 from staying in school or finding jobs. The task force will be composed of 25 members, including experts from the Department of Youth and Community Services and the Department of Education. The panel will be mandated to provide the mayor and the council speaker with a comprehensive report that includes an analysis of what obstacles prevent disconnected youth from obtaining the education and skills that employers require and the policies and programs that affect their progress. “This important legislation will help us improve the services we are providing to young people, especially disconnected youth,” said Eugene, who is chairman of the council’s Youth Services Committee. Eugene (D-Kensington-Flatbush), who defined disconnected youth as young people who are neither working nor enrolled in school, said that approximately 172,000 youths in New York City fit that description. Councilmember Mathieu Eugene speaks about his bill at a press conference prior to a recent City Council meeting.

Olympic Athlete Germaine Mason Killed in Crash in Jamaica KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Olympic medal-winning track and field athlete Germaine Mason died Thursday in a motorcycle crash in outside the capital of his native Jamaica, police in the Caribbean island said. Mason apparently lost control of his Honda motorcycle before dawn in St. Andrew Parish, the Jamaica Constabulary Force said in a statement. The 34-year-old athlete was taken to a local hospital but did not survive. Mason was born in Jamaica but represented Britain in the 2008 summer Olympics in Beijing. He won a silver medal in the high jump, with a personal best of 2.34 meters.

“Germaine was an outstanding athlete and a truly lovely man,” said Fuzz Caan, senior high jump coach at British Athletics, who worked closely with Mason at the time of his Olympic success. “He had a wry sense of humor and was a pleasure to be around. He was a great ambassador of British high jumping.” Ben Hawes, the chairman of the British Olympic Association’s athletes’ commission, expressed condolences on behalf of the country’s Olympians. “Winning a silver medal in Beijing places him amongst a unique group of athletes and underlines what a talented individual he was,” Hawes said.

Son of World’s Oldest Woman Dies at 97 at Home in Jamaica Associated Press KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — The son of a woman believed to be the oldest person in the world died at their home Wednesday in Jamaica at the ripe old age of 97. Harland Fairweather, who had recently been ill but had seemed to recover, awoke saying he felt dizzy and then deteriorated over the course of the morning, said Elaine McGrowder, one of two family caretakers who were at the home at the time. “He had been unwell for some time but we didn’t expect him to go like this,” McGrowder said. Fairweather lived with his 117-year-old mother, Violet Brown, in the rural northwestern Jamaican community of Duanvale.

He was born and raised there but spent much of his life in Britain, the caretaker said in a phone interview with The Associated Press. “He was a beautiful man — very, very special,” she said. Brown is considered to be the oldest person in the world with credible birth documentation, according to the Gerontology Research Group, a network of volunteer researchers into the world’s oldest people. Guinness World Records, considered to be the official arbiter of the oldest person, said it was still researching a number of candidates for the new world’s oldest person title following the death Saturday of 117-year-old Emma Morano of Italy.

Haiti Aims to Revive Military As End of UN Mission Looms David McFadden Associated Press

GRESSIER, Haiti (AP) — Their heads held high and chests puffed out, a group of nearly 100 Haitian men in camouflage fatigues do jumping jacks or march around an abandoned U.N. compound on a recent morning. But after a few drills, they seek shelter from the blazing sun in the absence of anything else to do. As U.N. military peacekeepers prepare for a full exit from this Caribbean nation, this small engineering corps is the first wave of Haiti’s efforts to try and revive a military force some 22 years after a national army was disbanded. While Haiti is a long way off from having a real military, these initial efforts to build up a defense force at whatever level excites some and unnerves others. “We’re proud Haitians and we want to make the nation stronger,” said Lt. Ted Tesnor Wolsby, a base commander in the brigade that has received months of military training in Ecuador but has only intermittent duties fixing irrigation ditches or roads back in Haiti for salaries starting at $318 a month. While it’s easy to find citizens who strongly support reconstituting a Haitian army, particularly jobless young people, the idea alarms those who vividly remember times darkened by military coups and oppression. “It’s not a good idea, that’s for sure,” said Bobby Duval, a former soccer star who was arrested by the army in 1976 and starved and tortured while locked up for 17 months for speaking out against human rights abuses under Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier’s government. Haitian leaders insist that a functioning defense force is urgently needed following a phased drawdown of all the remaining 2,370 U.N. military peacekeepers. The U.N. Security Council last week authorized an Oct. 15 wrap-up of a 13-year stabilization mission here, leaving behind a smaller peacekeeping operation for an initial period of six months comprising 1,275 police who will continue training Haitian law enforcers.

In this April 11, 2017 photo, Capt. Louissaint Dieudonne addresses members of Haiti’s new national military force in a meeting room at a former U.N. base in Gressier, Haiti. AP Photo/Dieu Nalio Chery “We want a new armed force, an armed force oriented toward development. This is what we need,” said Defense Minister Herve Denis, adding that the government is “very concerned” about a possible security vacuum after U.N. troops depart. Attitudes about a possible military revival are as complicated as the history of Haiti, which only saw its first freely elected leader with JeanBertrand Aristide in 1990, and he was ousted by a military coup just eight months later. For much of Haiti’s history, the army was used to crack down on political dissent for a parade of dictators or destabilize governments. When U.S. Marines occupied Haiti from 1915 to 1934, they abolished the existing military and created a national guard, which eventually became the budgetdraining Forces Armees d’Haiti. During the 29-year family dynasty founded by Francois “Papa Doc” Duvalier, the army was largely shunted aside in favor of the Tonton Macoutes, the regime’s dreaded private militia. But when his son, Jean-Claude, was ousted and fled to France in 1986, a repressive army high command of Duvalier appointees remained largely intact. After Aristide was ousted in a 1991 military coup, soldiers and paramilitary forces killed some 4,000 people over the next three years. Haiti’s current leaders are pitching new kinds of military duties: defending democracy, providing immediate assistance after natural disasters, and fighting smuggling of drugs and other contraband.

Tanzanian Ali Khatib Haji Hassan alias “Shkuba,” who is accused of being a drug trafficker, is seen OUR WORLD IN PHOTOS in court in Dar es Salaam, Wednesday earlier this month. A Tanzania court has granted the U.S government an extradition request for the suspected drug kingpin and two other suspects to face drug AP Photo/Khalfan Said trafficking charges.

Reviving a national army has been a goal of the Tet Kale party since it gained power in 2011. From his start as a candidate in 2010 elections, Michel Martelly pledged to restore the armed forces, pitching a force of 3,500 troops. Shortly before his term as Haiti’s president expired in February 2016, Martelly quietly issued a decree to reconstitute an army in the absence of a functioning Parliament. Now, officials with President Jovenel Moise’s government are pushing to have 500 troops next year. But they are providing only the broadest outlines of future plans to have armed troops monitoring coastlines and manning the border with the Dominican Republic. Robert Fatton, a Haitian-born politics professor at the University of Virginia and the author of “The Roots of Haitian Despotism,” said it would be difficult to imagine a military force that wouldn’t quickly become politicized. “There’s the possibility that it becomes a weapon in the hands of whoever is the president or the prime minister. And there’s a danger, obviously, that it might follow in the path of the previous military,” Fatton said. While many Haitians support a military rebirth regardless of questions about how the country will pay for it, it’s hard to find any enthusiasm for the idea by international donors who have poured billions into bolstering the Haitian National Police, which has grown to over 14,000 trained members.

“Our efforts have focused on supporting a civilian police force that is focused on what Haiti needs, which is law enforcement,” said Kenneth Merten, the U.S. State Department’s special coordinator for Haiti, while emphasizing that the Caribbean country is a sovereign nation that can make its own decisions about what forces it wants in the territory. The U.N. envoy for Haiti, Sandra Honore, told reporters Monday that the U.N. “is not in a position to support or to contribute to this plan of the government of Haiti.” But Senate President Youri Latortue, once an army lieutenant, says Haiti plans to engage in bilateral talks to try and convince troopcontributing countries to leave behind “equipment and helicopters so we can continue to reinforce this military after the U.N. departs.” Without disclosing any specifics, Haitian officials hint about upcoming support from some U.N. troop-contributing nations. But it’s far from clear if anything significant will actually pan out. Getting a professional and equipped military off the ground will require sustained international support, a fact well understood by authorities in the donor-dependent country. “That is my call to the international community: Don’t let us do the army alone,” Denis said.

Meet Chadwick’s Award-Winning Executive Chef Brooklyn’s Zack Stapelman Has Big Plans in the Works for Popular Bay Ridge Restaurant By John Alexander INBROOKLYN Chadwick’s Restaurant, at 8822 Third Ave. in Bay Ridge, is known for its outstanding culinary cuisine, and Executive Chef Zack Stapelman is enjoying his role overseeing one of Brooklyn’s finest kitchens. The enthusiastic young man is happy to be at the helm and has already demonstrated his skills by winning the Great Big Bacon Picnic that took place last fall at the old Pfizer factory in South Williamsburg. Stapelman’s winning entry was braised Bacon Bahn Mi Crostini, a play on French and Vietnamese cuisine. There were three sessions and each session awarded a different winner. The entries were judged in three categories: deliciousness, presenta‐ tion and creativity. Stapelman’s dish won for deliciousness in the first session. He says “it was the first time for me to take my food, my idea, and bring it to life and serve it to thousands of people. To get that kind of response straight out of the gate was just amazing.” 26‐year old Stapelman was born and raised in East Flatbush, and comes from what he refers to as a family of chefs. His father did macrobiotic and healthy cook‐ ing during the ’60s and ’70s, long before it came into vogue. His older brother owned and was executive chef at two restaurants in Manhattan, before opening another restau‐ rant in Santa Fe, New Mexico, which was listed as one of the top‐50 restaurants in the country by Forbes magazine in 1992. Stapelman explains, “So for my whole life, I’ve always just been around cooking, and food has been a focal point of family. When I think about family, I think of dinners. When we get together and have the whole family together, we’re either eating or watching TV, and the most memorable things revolve around eating, be‐ cause you get to talk and interact with people.”

Executive Chef Zack Stapelman (L) with Chadwick’s co‐owner Steven Oliver in the restaurant’s kitchen. He started working as a dishwasher when he was 17 years old in a restaurant called the Fish Market. It was raw bar and burger joint in the South Street Seaport. He would wash dishes from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. six nights a week. When one of the cooks didn’t show up for work one day, Stapelman saw it as his opportunity to approach the chef and ask to fill in. That made him realize that his future would be working in a kitchen. Cooking came easy to Stapelman, and he felt right at home in the kitchen. Stapelman worked at the Seaport restaurant for six months before moving on to Torrisi Italian Spe‐ cialties, which was located at Mulberry and Prince Street. He got the opportunity to be trained by two tal‐ ented chefs, Rich Torrisi and Mario Carbone, in what describes as a “culinary boot camp.” They saw that he had the desire to learn and offered him the opportunity develop his skills. They taught him how to create exquisite, elaborate plates full of flavor. Stapelman has worked in other restau‐ rants over the years hon‐ ing his craft. Including the now‐shuttered Low Country Greenwich. CONTINUED ON P. 3 LEFT: Executive Chef Zack Stapelman (L) in Chadwick’s dining room with co‐owner Gerry Morris.

Chadwick’s Restaurant at 8822 Third Ave.

Meet Chadwick’s Award-Winning Executive Chef, Zack Stapelman CONTINUED FROM P. 2 One year ago he started work‐ ing at Chadwick’s. He landed the position at the recommen‐ dation of Chadwick’s previous award‐winning chef Sean Quinn. Quinn was a winner on “Chopped,” the popular Food Network cooking show. When Quinn decided to leave Chad‐ wick’s, he knew he had to find a replacement. He contacted a friend of his who had worked as a chef with Stapelman at Low Country. The friend sug‐ gested Stapelman would be the perfect candidate.

“When I think about family, I think of dinners. When we get together and have the whole family together, we’re either eating or watching TV, and the most memorable things revolve around eating, because you get to talk and interact with people.” —Zack Stapelman, Chadwick’s executive chef

Stapelman feels like he’s found a new home at Chadwick’s, and praises own‐ ers Steven Oliver and Gerry Morris for making him feel welcome and giving him the opportunity to be creative in the kitchen. Stapelman adds, “They’ve put a lot of trust in me which allows me to test and try out all kinds of new dishes. They’ve allowed me to expand the flavor profiles of the typical dishes we serve here. And so far, the menu has received a warm response from our regulars and new customers alike.”

There’s always something going on in Brooklyn! Whether it’s dancing the night away to a multi-platinum selling band, or enjoying a quiet night out to dinner with friends, Brooklyn’s social scene is always buzzing. In Downtown Brooklyn, O’Keefe’s Bar & Grill is usually very crowded, no matter what time of day you go. There’s always something exciting going on in the neighborhood, and O’Keefe’s is right in the heart of it all at 62 Court St. You’re always greeted warmly at O’Keefe’s, where the waitress will find you a table and the bartender will set you up with your favorite drink. There are 18 televisions to keep you posted about what’s going on in the news or the world of sports. And you’ll love the popcorn shrimp! No matter what dish you try, be sure to add the popcorn shrimp on the side. O’Keefe’s has been serving customers for generations and it’s no surprise. No one is a stranger there and everyone knows that the neon sign that reads simply “BAR - GRILL” is the one and only O’Keefe’s.  Sports fans have long beaten a path from Barclays Center to visit the best hidden international beer hall in Brooklyn! Kings Beer Hall has all the trappings of Germany, but also serves all the international beers that can fit on its large and growing beer list. Recently, Kings Beer Hall was bursting with fans cheering on all the teams from March Madness, and we recommend you hold onto a seat at one of the hall’s long tables. As the Kings Beer Hall recommends, “take a tour of the world — one liter of beer at a time.” And did you know that the Class of 1987 of one of the borough’s finest high schools, Brooklyn Tech, held its 30th reunion at

Kings? The food, drinks and mouth-watering sliders guarantee that they won’t wait another 30 years to come back to Kings!  Downtown Brooklyn’s Rocco’s Tacos is the only Rocco’s Tacos in the metropolitan area! Again, Brooklyn has the first! No matter what happens down on the border, there’s no wall in the heart of Downtown Brooklyn — a guy named Rocco Mangel has made sure of that. He’s the founder of Rocco’s Tacos and creator of the menu (South of the Border) and the drink selections (“So much fun, it’s like a tropical vacation.”) Rocco’s Tacos offers a true taste of Mexico within a fun environment. People rave about the mouth-watering guacamole prepared tableside, the 425 varieties of tequila and the margaritas with a sour mix you won’t find anywhere else. In Downtown Brooklyn, at 339 Adams St., manager Al Vila and event manager Rashad Webb can handle just the two of you for lunch, or a large dinner party in one of the private rooms, dinner or late-night fun.  If you wish to enjoy the healthy comfort food of home, you need not travel far. Olga at Kitchen offers in-house daily prepared fresh dishes that will keep you coming back time after time. Run, don’t walk, to relish their chicken soup with dumplings and true authentic potato pancakes! You can sit and gather with fellow diners family-style and enjoy countless choices of farm-to-table meals. Save room for Kitchen’s ice cream, which is sourced from the family-owned upstate farm! We suggest the ‘Smetannick’ Honey Cake!! You’ll be making Kitchen your home away from home!

OUR WORLD IN PICTURES: CHEF MIGUEL NAVARRO INSPECTS A LE BLEU HAMBURGER, MADE

with caramelized onions and blue cheese on top of portobello mushroom and lettuce, at the Atlas MeatFree Delicatessen in Miami. When Ryan Bauhaus first started experimenting with faux meats, he fixated on recreating that subtle blood taste, settling on a tomato paste blend to mimic the acidic, iron flavor. The fatty part of meat was also not to be forgotten. Bauhaus boiled down mushrooms until he got the desired gelatinous, rubbery fat found on the back of a roast. AP Photo/Alan Diaz

One Man’s View on the Joy of Sailing And Brooklyn’s Jewel, Miramar By George Farkas

days, yes, the wind does blow from the north sometimes, but it still blows and you adjust. And yes, there are days when it’s too calm or too wet to sail. But overall, it truly is the best place for sail‐ ing. Leave Brooklyn and sail in the Sound? Very nice, except when you get there, you keep losing the wind. Regularly! It dies in the afternoon. There are several marinas in the south of Brooklyn, but I’m partial to mine. Miramar Yacht Club is based in Sheepshead Bay. You come out of the Bay, hang a right, go for about 6 minutes and you’re off !! Go right, and you’re in open water off Manhattan Beach, Brighton Beach and Coney Is‐ land. Head a little southerly and soon you’re in the Atlantic Ocean. The only thing to stop you then is

T

Well, come to think of it, I’m wrong! There is a huge difference! When I’m off the coast of Brooklyn, New York, USA, I will return to the dock and will not have to travel far after my little journey to find the best food of any sort anywhere on the planet. Our lobster is far superior to the Islands version, they can’t come near our pizza, Peter Luger’s puts every other steakhouse on the planet to shame, and there isn’t one Turkish or Russian restaurant in the Caribbean worth mentioning. Italian? Fugheddeaboutit! Can you imagine an is‐ land joint rivaling Spumoni Gardens, The Queen, Bamonte’s, La Palina, Gargulio’s, and forgive me for leaving out about 10 other greats? Chinese??? For heavens sake, we have our own Chinatown! Don’t get me wrong. There are lovely beaches in the Carribean, Bermuda and elsewhere. But wait, Coney Island, Brighton, Manhattan Beach, Riis Park across the bridge? I think we hold our own rather well, don’t you? OK. So our sand is sand‐colored and we don’t have pink or red sand! That’s a real issue, huh? And all this just begins to tell the story of the joy of sailing out of our great borough. First, the prevailing wind for most of the sailing season is a southerly breeze 8‐15 knots. Yes there are windier

their neck. His nickname was “Kid Twist.” He later became an informant against Murder Incorporated and was housed “safely” and guarded by police officers around the clock at the Half Moon Hotel. You’ll pass the site of the Half Moon that is now a residential nursing facility. When he, ahem, “jumped” to his death, the papers exclaimed in a memorable headline: “THE CANARY COULD SING, BUT HE COULDN’T FLY!” You’ll also see Little Odessa, Coney Island, the rides, the Coney Island Lighthouse, built in the late 1800s at the Western tip, the magnifi‐ cent Verrazano Narrows Bridge. And much, much more. In addition to all this, there are actual sail‐ ing related events that take place every year. Whether you’re fortunate enough to have a boat, or to be invited aboard by a friend, you can receive a blessing. If you’re interested in rac‐ ing or crewing, you can take part in at various re‐ gattas. Here are some quick examples:

—June 25 — The Annual Blessing of the Fleet: Boats from a number of marinas or clubs assemble off Kingsborough College and parade. The flag‐fes‐ tooned boats pass the docks in Sheepshead Bay. On the dock are a priest, a minister and a rabbi. (No, this is not a joke!) You and the vessel receive their blessings. Hey, like chicken soup, it can’t hoit!

here is something about sailing that is difficult to put into words. Being out on the water, moving along without the artificial noise of an engine, propelled by the wind, smelling and inhaling the clean air, feeling everyday worries and concerns take a back seat to the utter relaxation, only begins to tell the tale. I’ve been sailing for over 35 years. Yes, I used to race regularly and still take part in a regatta or two. More on that later. Yes, I’ve been off‐shore and sailed distances. That’s all in the past. Not because of any physical reasons. If I had to, I could still do it. No, the reason is I don’t want to. Nowadays, I generally don’t need a destina‐ tion. I’m rarely in a hurry to get somewhere quickly, and I don’t have the need to get there faster than the next guy. But that’s just me. You may get a great kick out of all this! I know I did! But now, I’m perfectly satisfied with spend‐ ing a few hours out on the water, dropping anchor and jumping in, sipping wine, (or a good brandy, if it’s little cold out there), eating shrimp, lobster, crab, etc., without utensils, having great conver‐ sation with friends, teaching and demonstrating to my guests the finer points of sailing, watching and instructing my perfect grandchildren how to “tack” and steer the boat, catch a striped bass, bluefish or weakfish while sailing along, some‐ times spotting dolphins and an occasional whale, yes, I did say dolphins and a whale, and being one with the universe for a period of time. The beauty in all of this, regardless of what you’re looking for in sailing, is that’s it’s all avail‐ able, and you need not travel far. The one thing I have realized is that when you’re out on the water in a sailboat, about a half‐mile or so off‐ shore, it truly makes no difference if you’re in any one of the Caribbean islands, The Bahamas, Bermuda, or, as in my case, off the coast of Brooklyn, New York, USA.

Back to reality. There are days when you simply want to stay on shore, stay on the boat at anchor or mooring in the Bay or in the slip at Miramar. You can have all that! You can bring food, you can barbeque, you can swim in the pool. In addition to all that, you can actually learn to sail. Once proficient, you can borrow and sail on a boat that is there for that purpose. All this just barely touches the surface of the joys of this pastime. Sailing along the beaches from Manhattan Beach to the point of Brooklyn at the western end, you will pass plenty of interesting land‐ marks. Here are a few: You remember Crazy Eddie? (His prices are insaaane!) So was the crime he was convicted of. You’ll get to see his very nice house in

United Regatta: Being planned as a joint venture of many clubs involving many boats, a sailboat race that will race past Coney Island and out to the light‐ houses off shore and then back to Manhattan Beach. You want to think “spectacle”!! Once you try it, you’ll likely be hooked. On the other hand, you may find it just too relaxing. Speaking for myself only, the first time I realized that sailing had a truly beneficial effect on my

overall approach to life was soon after I under‐ stood the mechanics and steered and docked a boat on my own. I felt fulfilled, and actually mellow. The particulars of this soothing effect hit me about 10 minutes after I left the marina to drive home. I was at a light that just turned green and a hyper‐testosterone filled fellow in a BMW was behind me. Within a split second he started blast‐ ing his horn. Apparently, my failure to immediately gun the engine and cause my tires to screech at the moment the light changed cause him consterna‐ tion, not that he could ever spell or even under‐ stand that word! I pulled to the side and waved him on. It’s possible that he misinterpreted my wave for some other gesture that he was more familiar with, but that was his problem. He gunned his engine, screeched his tires and took off. I, on the other hand, was still smelling the salt air and looked forward to my next sail! _______________________________ how much time, provisions, skill and boat you have. If you got it all and you have about 5‐6 days, head south at about 140 degrees and you may find Bermuda! (You may want to take a few lessons before you try this)

Manhattan Beach that the feds took from him. Does the name Abe Reles of Murder Inc. (played by Peter Falk in the movie, “Murder Incorporated”) mean anything to you? He was a killer, whose specialty was twisting the head of his victims until it snapped from

Sheepshead Bay, Old and New: Condos Where El Greco Diner Stood

This is The Vue, a Sheepshead Bay condo development with glass-walled retail spaces. By Lore Croghan INBrooklyn

Ship ahoy! Sails are billowing along the shoreline in Sheepshead Bay. These particular sails are not rigged to sailboats docked in the waters off Emmons Avenue. The gigantic sails are made of metal. They form a sculpture that stands on a 9,000-square-foot public plaza built by a condo developer.

The 58-unit condo development, which is called The Vue, is located at 1809 Emmons Ave. on a prominent corner where the Venetoklis family operated El Greco Diner for four decades. The sculpture reflects blue skies and the avenue’s busy vehicular traffic. It caught our eye the other day when we were walking around Sheepshead Bay looking at the waterfront neighborhood’s old and new housing stock. The condo building and the public plaza situated alongside it are looking fairly photogenic these days, though construction work isn’t

quite finished. On March 29, the city Buildings Department issued a temporary certificate of occupancy for The Vue — which excludes any “eating and drinking establishment” that is constructed there. In addition to condos, The Vue has 26,000 square feet of dramatic-looking glass-walled retail spaces. It’s going to have a rooftop recreation area with a saltwater pool. In December 2014, the Venetoklis Family Limited Partnership sold the El Greco Diner site for $13 million to an LLC with Sergey Rybak as managing member, city Finance Department records indicate. His firm, Rybak Development, has constructed other residential buildings in Sheepshead Bay and nearby Manhattan Beach. By the way, Finance Department records show that the developer received the right to build additional floor area at The Vue in exchange for constructing the plaza. The property’s present and future owners must maintain the plaza and keep it “accessible to the public at all times from Emmons Avenue,” the plaza’s Notice of Certification says. Condo marketing and sales are being handled by Ilite Realty Inc. in coordination with the Corcoran Group. Four dozen condos at The Vue are in contract at this point. Their asking prices ranged from $1.695 million for a three-bedroom penthouse to $525,000 for a one-bedroom unit, Corcoran’s website indicates.

the Sheepshead Bay B and Q train station is called Avalon Brooklyn Bay if you’re talking about rental apartments. It’s called 1 Brooklyn Bay if you’re talking about condos. The site where the 28-story tower is being constructed is often identified by the address 1501Voorhies Ave. Avalon Brooklyn Bay is using one of the property’s other addresses, 1524 Sheepshead Bay Road. We got an eyeful of this development the other day when we were walking around Sheepshead Bay looking at the shoreline neighborhood’s old and new housing stock. It was easy to spot the tower from various streets because it’s so much taller than other buildings in the area. The joint developers of the project are AvalonBay Communities and Muss Development. There are around 230 residential units in the rental-and-condo building. Avalon Brooklyn Bay’s rental apartments are already being marketed. Recently, when we checked AvalonBay’s website, monthly asking rents started at $2,060 for studios, $2,387 for one-bedroom apartments, $3,268 for two-bedroom units and $4,178 for three-bedroom apartments. The apartments listed online will be ready for occupancy at various dates this summer and fall, with the very first apartments expected to become available on July 10. Amenities include a fitness center and an outdoor swimming pool. As for the development’s condos, a teaser website for 1 Brooklyn Bay says a “showroom” for them is coming this spring. According to a New York Times story published last September, asking prices for one-bedroom condos at 1 Brooklyn Bay are expected to start at around $500,000.

Evil Sandy. Superstorm Sandy, which slammed into New York City on Oct. 29, 2012, did dire damage to some of Sheepshead Bay’s old-fashioned bungalows. The distinctive bungalows are located on streets and pedestrian pathways near Emmons Avenue, which runs along Sheepshead Bay’s shoreline. We walked along some of these blocks the other day when we were in Sheepshead Bay looking at the neighborhood’s old and new housing stock. Nearly four and a half years after the killer hurricane, some bungalow owners are rebuilding them according to zoning regulations concerning construction in flood zones. Other owners are demolishing flood-damaged bungalows and building entirely new houses. Others are selling their homes. For example, take a look at the bungalows on Brown Street near Emmons Avenue.

INBrooklyn photos by Lore Croghan

According to city Finance Department records and city Buildings Department records, Arthur Schwartzberg, a longtime owner of 2790 Brown St., built a new foundation and piling system to lift his house above the flood plain. There’s a construction fence around the home next door, 2788 Brown St. On March 21, the Buildings Department issued a permit for a partial job to construct a new foundation and piling system to raise this house above the flood plain. Finance Department and Buildings Department records identify William Gibbons as a long-time owner of this property. The next house in this row, 2786 Brown St., is brand-new. Demolition started in April 2015 on the single-family, onestory bungalow that had stood there. It had been damaged by Superstorm Sandy, Buildings Department filings indicate. The property owner, identified in Buildings Department and Finance Department records as Kim Nicastro, built a new singlefamily, two-story house on top of ground-level storage space.
