KIDNAPPED GIRLS FREED FROM BOKO HARAM: Chibok school girls recently freed from Boko Haram captivity are seen in Abuja, Nigeria, Sunday, May 7. The 82 freed Chibok schoolgirls arrived in Nigeria’s capital last Sunday to meet President Muhammadu Buhari as anxious families awaited an official list of names and looked forward to reuniting three years after the mass abduction. It is reported that one of the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram in 2014 and who had the opportunity to be released last Saturday chose to stay with her husband, Nigeria's president spokesman AP Photo/ Olamikan Gbemiga said Tuesday. Why Is Trump Trying to Sidetrack Investigation Into Russian Election Meddling?
T
James Comey, whom Trump praised during the transition of power after the election, was the political gift the FBI essentially put in the Trump campaign’s lap when Comey announced to lawmakers that the bureau would be reviewing new emails that “appear to be pertinent” to its investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server.
Is President Donald Trump doing a little bargaining with the Russians, or is he in fact working in their interest? In the middle of this whole controversy, Trump has once again fired another person handling the investigation into Russia’s alleged meddling in the U.S. presidential election.
A senior transition official described the meeting between Trump and intelligence community officials as "cordial," not contentious. Trump asked questions and made clear his admiration for intelligence community employees, the official added at that time.
Trump, who became highly critical of Comey, the FBI and DOJ after his summer announcement, said he “really disagreed with him” at the time.
Now we have to wonder whether the FBI will continue its investigation into possible Russian meddling in the 2016 elections in the U.S. We also have to worry about files that could go missing. In the past Trump, has denied that the Russians tried to interfere in the presidential elections and charged that the Democrats made up and pushed the Russian story as an excuse for running a failed campaign. He has jumped to deny that he was being investigated, and proven that he has something to hide when the investigation involves some of his colleagues.

Even before he was president, Trump downplayed Russia’s role in the U.S. elections, even after being briefed by top intelligence officials. Trump's meeting with these intelligence officials took around 90 minutes at Trump Tower. A Trump spokeswoman said the officials who gave the briefing were Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, CIA Director John Brennan and FBI Director James Comey.

“And I have to give the FBI credit. That was so bad what happened originally,” Trump said, referring to Comey’s announcement in July that he would not recommend pressing charges against Clinton to the Justice Department (DOJ). “And it took guts for Director Comey to make the move that he made in light of the kind of opposition he had where they’re trying to protect her from criminal prosecution. You know that. It took a lot of guts.”
“I was not his fan,” he added, “but I’ll tell you what: What he did, he brought back his reputation. He brought it back.”
Trump, who at that time was the Republican nominee, also advised the FBI chief to “hang tough.” “A lot The FBI’s motto is “Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity.” of people want him to do the wrong thing,” Trump sugNow, however the department is being threatened, and gested. “What he did was took guts.” many people fear that little can protect government deClinton herself said on Saturday that it was “pretty partments from abuse by people with a greater power. strange” that Comey would send that letter, adding that Donald Trump seem to be able to disrupt any investi- such a move is “unprecedented” and “deeply troubling.” gation into possible Russian involvement in the United She urged Comey to “explain everything right away.” States. Trump told NBC News on Tuesday that the firing nothing to do with the investigation into charges of Russian meddling in the elections. Instead, he said he was upset that Comey had to issue a clarification about recent testimony to Congress regarding the FBI's investigation into Clinton's private email server. But Democrats and Republicans alike expressed concern about the implications about the firing's timing and Trump's explanation, given the ongoing investigation. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Virginia), Clinton's former running mate, suggested on Twitter that the announcement conflicted with Sessions' decision to recluse himself from the investigation. Behind closed doors, the Russians must be laughing at the fact that they have disrupted the whole democratic process in the United States of America One must remember that President Donald Trump is always reiterating that having a better relationship with Russia is a “good thing.”

G UEST E DITORIAL Coney Island Prep Students To Know Value of College Education By Pamela Harris
New York State Assemblymember
In February of this year, I had the honor of hosting students from the first graduating class of Coney Island Prep High School at the state Capitol. I am so proud of all these young scholars have accomplished, but above all, I am proud that every one of them has been accepted to college. As a member of the New York State Assembly’s Committee on Higher Education, I know the life-changing power of a college degree. Today’s college graduates, on average, earn $17,500 more than their peers with high school diplomas. State Assemblymember Our committee works Pamela Harris Brooklyn Eagle file photo to make sure that by Paula Katinas every student from New York has access to an education beyond high school and to the countless career opportunities a higher education grants them. The story of Coney Island Prep echoes the story of the broader public charter sector in New York City. Like many other public charter schools, Coney Island Prep was founded based on an unwavering belief that every student deserves a quality education. The school was scrappy in its early days, with just four rooms in the local community center and 90 fifthgrade students when it opened its doors. Today, the school has grown tremendously as its reputation for excellence becomes known among families. Today, more than 1,000 scholars are enrolled at Coney Island Prep, and each and every one of our seniors is graduating with a college acceptance letter in hand. I’ve been lucky enough to visit the Coney Island Prep campus and have witnessed how the school’s core values — professionalism, respect, integrity, determination and excellence — are woven into every aspect of the school day. Teachers and administrators work tirelessly to create an environment that fosters learning and students are excited to attend class each day and engage with the innovative curriculum. It’s the kind of environment every parent wants for their child. While Coney Island Prep has made a great deal of headway in our community, we still have a long way to go to ensure that every child in South Brooklyn and across our city can attend a school that helps them grow and succeed. Today, more than 44,000 families remain on waitlists in hopes that their children will be admitted to a public charter school in their district. The data on the value of a college education is clear, and we need to do everything in our power to make sure that these families don’t have to wait any longer. That’s why I support the expansion of all great public schools — charter or district — and believe that all public schools must be funded fairly based on the needs of their students. I look forward to the day when every high school senior being accepted to college is no longer viewed as extraordinary. Groundbreaking schools like Coney Island Prep are showing us what’s possible, and it’s only by supporting more great public schools, whether they’re charter or district, that we can make college a reality for every student. —Pamela Harris is a Democratic state assemblymember for the 46th District (Bay Ridge, Fort Hamilton, Coney Island)
‘When a Mother Is Illegal’ Continues from page 1 But the boy, haunted by his mother’s disappearance and memories of all he has been forced to leave behind, struggles to embrace fully this new reality. Told from both Daniel and Polly’s perspectives (set in New York and China) the narrative also unravels the mystery of Polly’s disappearance and the difficult choice she was forced to make. “The Leavers was inspired by recent, reallife stories of undocumented immigrant women whose U.S.-born children were taken away from them and adopted by American families, while the women themselves were jailed or deported,” Ko said in an interview with Barbara Kingsolver. “It was this missionary-type attitude: We need to save these kids from their own culture and families. The kids are assimilable; the mothers are not. “Today we’re seeing more conscious efforts from adoptive parents to celebrate racial difference, rather than trying to ignore it. But choosing to adopt transracially as a symbol of diversity can be a kind of liberal racism in
itself. With ‘The Leavers,’ I want to decenter the narrative of transracial adoption away from that of the adoptive parents. Instead, we need to privilege the voices of adoptees, who are often missing from the conversation or dismissed as being bitter if they’re honest or critical about their experiences.” In “A Better Life,” an essay by Author Lisa Ko Ko, she writes of her ethnically Chinese parents who grew up in the Philippines, “They arrived in the U.S. shortly after the passage of the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act, which reversed nearly a century of racist quotas that effectively prohibited immigrants from Asia,
Africa and the Caribbean while allowing European immigrants to enter the country legally…’You’re lucky,’ my parents said, and I knew I was supposed to be grateful for something, but lucky also felt like a warning [of] how precarious status could be.” This precarious state for many, not so “lucky,” undocumented immigrants who become parents of children born into citizenship, is what Ko depicts with one family in “The Leavers.” Lisa Ko’s fiction has appeared in Best Photo by Bartosz Potocki. American Short Stories and Narrative among other publications. This is her first novel and it won a 2016 PEN literary award for socially engaged fiction. Ko was born in Queens and lives in Brooklyn. Ko appeared May 9 at Greenlight Books in conversation with Hillary Jordan.
Judge Extends Temporary Restraining Order Halting Demolition of Our Lady of Loreto By Lore Croghan Brooklyn PHOENIX
Don't touch that historic church. At a hearing Tuesday in state Supreme Court in Brooklyn, Justice Ellen Spodek extended a temporary restraining order that halts the demolition of Our Lady of Loreto in the Ocean Hill section of Brownsville. Justice Spodek will be issuing a decision in the next couple weeks concerning the suit, which was filed in late April by former parishioner Jillian Mulvihill. It seeks a permanent stop to the demolition of the vacant neoclassical Roman Renaissance-style church at 126 Sackman St. by Catholic Charities Progress of Peoples Development Corp. The city Buildings Department had issued demolition permits for the property in March. The Catholic charity intends to construct 40 units of low-income housing and a “community space” on the site of the demolished church, Richard Coppola, a partner at Cullen and Dykman LLP, said during the hearing. Coppola represents Catholic Charities Progress of Peoples Development Corp. (POP) and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, which is also a defendant in the suit. The Brownsville Cultural Coalition, of which Mulvihill is a member, has been campaigning to have Our Lady of Loreto designated as a city landmark and turned into a neighborhood cultural center. The group has the support of elected officials including state Assemblymember Latrice Walker (DBrownsville) and state Sen. Tony Avella, a Democrat from Queens with a track record of supporting preservationist causes. The Catholic charitable organization holds a 53-year lease on the church building with an option to extend the lease term to 99 years. In 2013, POP called for a request for proposals (RFP) for the adaptive reuse of the church, and received only one response. Chris Slowik, a partner at Klein Slowik PLLC who is representing Mulvihill, asserted during the hearing that the Catholic charity “did not engage in good faith” with the RFP respondent. He was deemed ineligible because he wanted to use the church building for religious purposes. Coppola, the Catholic charity's attorney, said during the hearing that POP did make a good-faith effort in handling the request for proposals process. A rectory was demolished, and low-income housing was built Both the cast-stone church and a rectory that stood next to it were deemed eligible for listing on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
In 2010, the Catholic charity, the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and three government housing agencies signed a letter of resolution stipulating that the church building would be spared from demolition and POP would be allowed to tear down the rectory and build low-income housing adjacent to the church building. A 64-unit low-income apartment complex called Catholic Charities Monsignor Anthony J. Barretta Apartments was constructed. ‘A Living Piece of History’ After the hearing ended, Mulvihill told the Brooklyn PHOENIX “I have found more inspiration in state Supreme Court than I have in any Catholic church since Loreto closed. Loreto was the only Catholic church I found inspiring. “I want us to leave Loreto to the next generation of immigrants to be their cultural cen-
ter and source of inspiration,” she added. Our Lady of Loreto was built as a place of refuge for Italians when they were a downtrodden immigrant group in New York City. The architect who designed the church, Adriano Armezzani, was an Italian immigrant. The church's builder, sculptor, interior decorator and painter were also Italian immigrants. Songwriter Harry Warren, who wrote “Chattanooga Choo Choo” and the Dean Martin hit “That's Amore,” was a choirboy at Our Lady of Loreto. Warren's real name was Salvatore Guaragna. “The church is irreplaceable. It's a living piece of history,” Mulvihill's lawyer, Slowik, told the PHOENIX after the hearing ended. “It's a testimony to the spirit of Italian immigrants who built it with their own hands,” he said. “I'm moved that the current residents of the neighborhood have embraced its history and want to use it as a place for the community to come together.”

Landmarked Childs Restaurant Is Looking Good

It’s Part of Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk By Lore Croghan INBrooklyn
This landmark on the Coney Island boardwalk is starting to look good. Renovators have made great strides on the restoration of Childs Restaurant, which was constructed in 1923. The forbidding face of Neptune, god of the sea, peers down from the terra-cotta ornamentation on the stucco façade of the Spanish Colonial Revival-style building. The once-glamorous seaside restaurant at 3052 W. 21st St., which was designed by architects Dennison & Hirons, is being restored because it’s an integral piece of a new concert venue that made its debut last summer. Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk, as the new entertainment complex is called, also has an open-air component with a roof and 5,000 seats. Go to brooklyneagle.com to see a new photograph of it. The open-air amphitheater roof looks like a gigantic white tent. According to Birdair, the Buffalo-based company that built the roof, it consists of a PVC membrane exterior and a PVC
membrane liner with two acoustical curtains supported by structural steel arches. PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, is a water-resistant, fire-resistant plastic. The venue’s stage is inside the Childs Restaurant building. The stage is visible to the outdoor audience thanks to 50-foot-tall doors on the side of the building. This year’s upcoming concert season, which is scheduled to start on June 16, will include performances by Motown greats the Temptations, the Four Tops, Mary Wilson of the Supremes and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, country star Toby Keith and rock innovators Echo & the Bunnymen and Violent Femmes. Live Nation is the amphitheater operator. The city-owned property is leased by a joint venture of real-estate developer iStar and nonprofit Coney Island USA. By the way, the Childs Restaurant amphitheater project also includes a one-acre playground, picnic area and grassy hill called Seaside Park. Its design was led by landscape architecture firm Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates.
We’re Waiting for the Makeover Of Coney Island’s Shore Theater
A Tax Lien on the Surf Avenue Property Was Recently Paid By Lore Croghan INBrooklyn
Coney Island’s summer season will soon begin. And the Shore Theater is still sitting there, empty and desolate-looking. When will the long-vacant — if you don’t count the presence of homeless squatters a few years ago — Roaring Twenties movie palace finally get a makeover? The neo-Renaissance Revival-style commercial property that was once the pride of Coney Island has belonged to Pyotr Yadgarov since December 2015.
That’s when his real-estate firm Pye Properties purchased 1301 Surf Ave. for $14 million through Shore Tower Group LLC with Pyotr Yadgarov as member, city Finance Department records show. There is one piece of promising news to report about the iconic seven-story theater and office building. In March, a tax lien on it dating back to 2002 was paid and discharged, Finance Department records indicate. Otherwise, things are quiet at the golden-brick, stone and terra-cotta building on the corner of Surf and Stillwell avenues. Continued on page 8INB

Coney Island Sights Everybody Loves to Photograph Beach, boardwalk and Wonder Wheel — three popular photo subjects in one image.
By Lore Croghan INBrooklyn
People love to photograph Coney Island icons — especially the Wonder Wheel. INBrooklyn photos by Lore Croghan
In the spring, the temperature in Brooklyn goes up and down like Coney Island’s landmarked Cyclone roller coaster. And the other day, it went waaay up, like the seats on Coney
Island’s landmarked Parachute Jump when it was still a functioning ride. The 85-degree weather gave everybody a sneak peek of summer at the People’s Playground, which is one of the Atlantic Ocean beachfront neighborhood’s nicknames. Continued on page 9INB
We’re Waiting for the Makeover of Coney Island’s Shore Theater
Continued from page 7INB We reached out to Yadgarov with a query about what steps he has taken to get the Shore Theater’s restoration and adaptive reuse underway. He hasn’t answered. A posting on his company Pye Properties’ website suggests his current plans for 1301 Surf Ave.
“The vision is to make the Shore Theater the future cultural epicenter of Coney Island via music, theater and live events,” it says. Plus, there’s a rendering of the building showing a marquee over its front door with the words “Shore Hotel” spelled out in red letters. It’s the same drawing that surfaced last summer on brokerage firm Commercial Acquisitions Realty’s website. At that time, a broker at that firm told Eye on Real Estate he was marketing 3,500 square feet of first-floor retail space with an asking rent of $75 per square foot at the building. We couldn’t find the Shore Theater listed on Commercial Acquisitions Realty’s site when we looked for it the other day.
Mermaids Are Dancing on the Ceiling The Shore Theater was designated as an individual city landmark in 2010, so any exterior alterations planned by Pye Properties must be approved by the city Landmarks Preservation Commission. As is the case with most landmark designations, the property’s exterior is protected from demolition but not its interior. It will be up to Yadgarov to decide whether to preserve eye-popping decorative details inside the historic movie theater. The auditorium has a dome that’s 150 feet in diameter.
There’s a mezzanine where mermaids are dancing on the ceiling — decorative plaster mermaids set in sea-green diamonds. See brooklyneagle.com for photos Coney Island historian Charles Denson took of the movie theater’s interiors in 2006. The building was designed by preeminent theater-architecture firm Reilly & Hall and built in 1925. It originally belonged to Chanin Construction Co. Loew’s operated the movie theater for much of its five-decade run. It was designed for movies and live performances — and notables including Al Jolson and Jerry Lewis appeared on its stage. Near the end of its days as a movie theater, it was a porn palace. The building’s previous owner, Horace Bullard, purchased it in 1979. By that time, the movie theater was closed. The late real-estate investor amassed a portfolio of Coney Island properties — including the Thunderbolt roller coaster, which the Giuliani Administration illegally tore it down in 2000. Bullard, who wanted to turn the Shore Theater into a hotel and casino, died in 2013. His daughter Jasmine Bullard was president of his company Kansas Fried Chicken Inc. in 2015 when it sold the Shore Theater to Yadgarov.
The Shore Theater, on this prominent Coney Island corner, is in need of a fix-up.
