Brooklynites have already embraced car- and bike-share services like Zipcar and Citi Bike. Now, a new mode of shared transportation has come to the borough. On Monday, a startup called Revel Transit launched the city’s first-ever shared electric moped service. Founders Frank Reig and Paul Suhey demonstrated the company’s shiny new Torrot models — one of the most popular brands in Europe, they say — at a press conference in Bushwick. continues on inside front page
The 11 Most Beautiful New Buildings in B’klyn GREENPOINT LANDING AT 7 BELL SLIP INCLUDED By The Bridge Editors Brooklyn can often feel like one giant construction zone, thanks to its boom times. But here and there, when the scaffolding is peeled away, the result of all the noise and dust is revealed to be pleasing to the eyes — even a delight, in the best cases. Those buildings, expressive in design and uplifting for their neighborhoods, deserve recognition. That’s the role of the 18th annual Building Brooklyn Awards, which took
place on Wednesday at the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge. The winners comprised 11 recently completed construction and renovation projects, so we can offer a preview of what they look like — and what the judges say about them. All told, the buildings “represent a great combination of large and small, public and private domains that really run the gamut of how development shapes Brooklyn,” states Rick Russo, acting president of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, which presents the see inside back page awards.

Electric Moped-Sharing Comes to Brooklyn continued from page 1 A moped is legally defined as any low-powered motorcycle with an engine capacity no greater than 50cc, and a max speed under 30 mph. Revel’s mopeds weigh about 190 pounds and can be handled by men and women, young or old, the founders said.
Rides in Brooklyn And Queens Only To sign up, users must have a valid driver’s license, pay $25 for a background check and take a free short lesson in how to operate the vehicle if they have no experience on motorized twowheel transit.
to get the service “until we make sure New Yorkers want this,” Reig told the Greenpoint Gazette. The startup has cleared the service with the NYC Department of Transportation, the local police precincts and elected officials, they said. “Revel adds a missing
Revel Transit founders demonstrated how easy it is to rent and ride a moped at a press conference in Bushwick Monday. The city’s first-ever shared electric moped service works like Citi Bike. Brooklyn Eagle photo by Mary Frost The team chose the three neighborhoods to start their pilot program because “Bushwick is where Citi Bike ends — it’s a transit desert,” Suhey said. He added, “On top of that, with the [upcoming] L-train shutdown we’re looking for new kinds of transit.” Users can find and rent the mopeds using Revel’s cellphone app. The first 20 minutes of riding cost $4, and every minute thereafter costs 25 cents. Users can park their wheels — say, to eat or shop — for $3 an hour before riding them back to their home neighborhood. The fee includes insurance, and a helmet comes packed with each moped. Suhey called the mode of transport the “missing link from New York’s transportation network.” He added, “We look forward to e-mopeds becoming an integrated part of the city’s transit system, especially in areas underserved by existing infrastructure.” Reig said that San Francisco has about 700 shared mopeds in place, and there are “several thousand” in Paris and Berlin, where they are very popular.
And sorry Manhattan — the mopeds must stay within Brooklyn and Queens and they can’t be ridden over highways or major bridges. Users will be fined if they try this or if they park illegally. Late at night or early in the morning, Revel staffers will find all the vehicles and swap in fresh battery packs. The vehicles are street legal because they are ranked as Class B, reaching a top speed of 29 mph. (As such, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles, they can only operate in either the right-hand lane or along the shoulder.) When the ride is over, the user has to park it in a spot that’s legal for the next 24 hours. This shouldn’t be too difficult, because the vehicles are parked perpendicular to the curb, requiring under 5 feet of open space. The pilot program will run through December, after which Reig and Suhey will analyze what they did right and what has to change, they said. They plan to expand, but didn’t want to discuss what neighborhoods were next
piece to our city's transit puzzle at a time when it couldn't be more necessary,” City Councilmember Antonio Reynoso (D-Williamsburg-Bushwick) said in a statement. Reynoso called the vehicles affordable and environmentally friendly. New users automatically get $8 in riding credit (two free rides). In addition, Revel is currently offering users an additional $15 riding credit that expires on August 30. The promotional code is “RevelAndGo” and provides up to $23 total in riding credits, equivalent to five free rides. Suhey has a background in chemical engineering and got his start in business “selling his grandmother’s hot pepper recipe,” he said in his bio. Reig is a trained chef with experience at NYC restaurants including Gramercy Tavern. The idea for Revel mopeds came about after their work at Gerson Lehrman Group organizing and moderating investment research events on clean transportation solutions.

Trump Consultant’s Brooklyn Australian-Style Breakfasts Brownstone Is Targeted Again Invade New York, Brooklyn A box labeled “American Fascism” was left at Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort’s brownstone in Carroll Gardens last Tuesday. One NYPD spokesman said it was investigated as a suspicious package but only contained a “God Bless America” pin. A second spokesman later said the box contained trash, according to Gothamist. Manafort, a lawyer and political consultant, was indicted by a federal grand jury last October on charges linked to his consulting work for Ukraine’s former pro-Russian government in 2014. He was charged with conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money, failure to report foreign bank and financial accounts and more. He is now in jail awaiting his trial, which is slated to begin on July 31. According to The New York Times, Manafort never lived in the house at 377 Union St., but has commissioned renovations on it at various times. Neighbors have erected a satirical sign declaring it “The House that Brought Down a President,” and photographer Amy Finkel left a pumpkin carved with Robert Mueller’s likeness there last Halloween, Gothamist reported. If Manafort is convicted, the house would be subject to forfeiture.
Measles Outbreak in Borough Park, W’burg Cost the City Nearly $400K A 2013 measles outbreak in the Hasidic Jewish enclaves of Borough Park and Williamsburg cost the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene nearly $400,000, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The outbreak began in March 2013 when one child returned infected from a trip to London. From then until June of that year, 58 people ranging in age from infancy to age 32 caught measles, according to Dr. Jennifer B. Rosen, one of the authors of the study. Counting travel, testing equipment and more than 10,000 hours of work by 87 staffers, the Health Department spent $394,448 fighting the outbreak, said the study, which was quoted on Tuesday by the New York Post. The study cited “the insular nature of the affected community,” meaning the fact that Hasidic Jews rarely come into close contact with the larger community until they’re adults, as a reason the outbreak didn’t spread further.

Australian-style breakfasts have become increasingly popular in New York City, especially in neighborhoods like Greenpoint and Williamsburg, thanks to the proliferation of Australian-style cafes. Cafes like Two Hands, Ruby’s, Flinder’s Lane, Banter and Five Leaves feature sumptuous yet healthy breakfasts including organic porridge with raw honey and grass-fred cream, free-range poached eggs with local bacon and roasted broccoli, and many varieties of avocado toast. They serve breakfast all day long, according to The New York Times. This is not a coincidence, the Times says — in 2005, the U.S. signed a trade agreement that included a flexible new work visa specifically for Australians. Several thousand Australians, most of them young adults, have been coming here every year since. “Breakfast in Australia can last until it’s time for a beer, if you work it right,” Nicola Palmer, a graphic designer from Canberra who lives in Williamsburg, told the Times.
Map Shows Native American Origins Of Many of Today’s Brooklyn Streets Many of the biggest streets and avenues in Brooklyn began as Native American trails. A 1946 map titled “Indian Villages, Paths, Ponds and Places in Kings County,” published by then-Brooklyn Borough President Historian James A. Kelly, shows some of these streets, according to 6sqft.com.Among them are Flatbush Avenue, Fulton Street, part of Atlantic Avenue, Division Street in Williamsburg and Kings Highway. The map also shows the names of the tribes that originally lived in the area, such as the Gowanus, the Canarsie and the Winippague. The tribes’ locations are marked by teepees, despite the fact that teepees were used only by tribes of the Great Plains. In addition, the map shows the boundaries of the Colonial-era towns that now make up the borough of Brooklyn: Brooklyn (today’s Downtown area), Bushwick, Flatbush, New Utrecht, Flatbush and Gravesend, as well as the town of New Lots, which seceded from Flatbush in 1852. More insights into the map can be found at Viewing NYC.

Wednesday, Thursday, August 2,April 20186, 2016 Research has shown that air pollution from diesel exhaust is directly linked to increased rates of asthma, heart and lung disease, higher blood pressure and cancer. According to the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, children from North Brooklyn, southeastern Queens and the South Bronx are hospitalized for asthma at twice the city’s average.
One MANN’S Point of VIEW
Intro 157-c calls for the city to reduce the permitted capacity of each solid waste transfer station in Jeff Mann, Columnist Brooklyn’s Community District 1 (CD1) by 50%. Southeastern Queens and South Bronx waste centers will be reduced by 33 percent below capacity.
Waste Equity Comes to North Brooklyn… Or Does It?
Following nearly a decade of advocacy by North Brooklyn’s elected officials, leaders and residents, the City Council took a step toward citywide waste equity, passing Intro 157-c on July 18. The bill aims to move the city forward in its implementation of 2006’s Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP), which addressed the inequitable amount of commercial trash processed in North Brooklyn, southeastern Queens and the South Bronx — home to 26 of the city’s 38 waste transfer stations. Twelve years after then-Mayor Bloomberg signed SWMP into law, these three overburdened neighborhoods still process approximately 70% of the 38,000 tons of waste produced daily in the city. This waste is moved by nearly 3,000 diesel trucks to transfer stations. In North Brooklyn alone, it takes around 1,750 truck trips to move 7,000 tons of garbage daily.

Great as these reductions sound, the devil re-
mains in the details. Currently, the total permitted capacity in Brooklyn CD 1 is 20,385 tons per day. In 2017, these transfer stations received an average of 7,003 tons per day of waste. Do the math. A 50% reduction in capacity brings permitted waste processing capacity in North Brooklyn to 10,192.5, still allowing for a greater than 50% increase over the current 7,000 tons being processed daily, before a cap would take effect. Questions about capacity should not take away from the work of elected officials and local activist groups, such as OUTRAGE, to get a waste equity law on the books. Similar bills were voted down over the years, following opposition from the city. These bills have also faced fierce opposition from community leaders throughout the city seeking to keep waste processing out of their own communities. Intro 157-c becomes the first waste equity bill to pass the Council and sets the table for future reductions. It was primarily sponsored by Council Members Antonio Reynoso and Steve Levin. The bill now makes its way to Mayor de Blasio’s desk. If signed, it will go into effect by the fall of next year.

The row house at 158 Clifton Pl. in Clinton Hill is an 1887 row house undergoing gut renovation with recycled materials and energy conservation uppermost in mind. The process allows use of recycled wood that would otherwise be unsuitable for exterior use, according to the awards program. The back of the house uses recycled slats from the Coney Island boardwalk. All told, the residence meets New York’s passive-house standard for energy conservation. Architect: Paul A. Castrucci; builder: Blue Line Construction.

The 11 Most Beautiful New Buildings in Brooklyn continued from page 7

8. Residential/Mid-rise: The Brooklyn Grand This mixed-use building on Grand Street in East Williamsburg is newly designed to look old, with many subtle touches. The red brick structure, which contains 71 rental units and 10,000 square feet of commercial space, has a base that is “capped with a historical replica cornice that grounds the building and separates the two upper floors,” say the judges. This keeps the scale of the building congruent with industrial warehouses
in the neighborhood, but there’s another nuance: the top two floors “are clad in champagne colored metal to evoke the feeling that they were added in this century.” Architect: Gene Kaufman Architect PC; builder: Hollister Construction.
10. Iconic Design: 325 Kent
9. Residential/High-rise: Hub Hub, a new, 55-story skyscraper at the edge of Boerum Hill, is currently the tallest building in Brooklyn. The residential tower contains 600 market-rate apartments and 150
affordable units, “designed to foster a social lifestyle,” say the judges, with more than 40,000 square feet of amenities, including an indoor pool. “Strategies have been employed to emphasize a residential scale and demonstrate sensitivity to the surrounding community,” say the judges, with features including setbacks, contextual window patterns, and a low-rise retail wing with “a unique floating roof.” Architects: Dattner, GHWA; builder: New Line Structures.
One of the most visually dramatic structures to rise lately in New York City is 325 Kent, with its square-donut silhouette and copper and zinc cladding. The residential rental building (522 market-rate units; 104 affordable) is the first to open on the Domino Sugar refinery site, a multibilliondollar, 11-acre, mixed-use community in Williamsburg being developed by DUMBO-based Two Trees Management. “The building possesses a striking silhouette with a textured, geometric facade, incrementally stepped to provide a visual connection between the existing low-rise neighborhood, the landmarked Refinery Building and future waterfront development,” say the judges. Architect: SHoP Architects; builder: 325 Kent Construction LLC. See more views of the building here and neighboring Domino Park here.
11. Economic Impact: Building 77, Brooklyn Navy Yard Building 77 is the transformation of a 1-million-square-foot, World War II-era structure into a modern facility for light manufacturing in the ever-expanding Brooklyn Navy Yard. The renovation created openings in portions of a windowless facade and refurbished all systems, creating a brighter, technologically up-to-date space for commercial tenants to modify to their needs for office, design and production work. The ground floor was built to accommodate food producers and vendors, while the outside entranceways were redesigned to foster public gathering.
