But Ruth pressed on and excelled academically, eventually becoming the first female member of the Harvard Law Review. In 1956, Martin contracted testicular cancer in 1956, requiring intensive treatment and rehabilitation. Ruth Ginsburg took care of her young daughter and convalescing husband, taking notes for him in class while she continued her own law studies. Martin recovered, graduated from Harvard Law and accepted a position at a New York law firm. Ruth transferred to Columbia Law School to join him, and here, again, she was elected to the school’s law review. She graduated first in her class in 1959. Despite her outstanding academic record, however, Ginsburg continued to encounter gender while seeking a job after graduation. After clerking for U.S. District Judge Edmund L. Palmieri, she taught at Rutgers University Law School and at Columbia. During the 1970s, at the same time she was teaching at Columbia, she served as the director of the Women’s Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union, for which she argued six landmark cases on gender equality before the U.S. Supreme Court. Of the five cases she won, one involved a portion of the Social Security Act that favored women over men because it granted certain benefits to widows but not widowers. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter appointed Ruth Bader Ginsburg to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed her to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Senate Judiciary Committee hearings were basically friendly, and she was confirmed by the Senate, 96-3. Despite her history as an advocate for liberal causes, as a judge, Justice Ginsburg has favored moderation and restraint. She is considered part of the Supreme Court’s moderate-liberal bloc and has taken strong positions in favor of gender equality, the rights of workers and the separation of church and state. In 1999, she won the American Bar Association’s Thurgood Marshall Award for her contributions to gender equality and civil rights. She has been back to Brooklyn on several occasions. One of these was the 150th anniversary of the Eastern District of New York Federal Court in 2015. At the time, she singled out one of the court’s judges, Jack Weinstein, for several praise, noting that he had been one of her teachers at Columbia University.

Brooklyn, City and State Officials Trash Trump’s Reissued Travel Ban Say it’s Offensive, Immoral & Will Make Country Less Safe By Mary Frost Brooklyn PHOENIX
President Donald Trump reissued his much-maligned travel ban on Monday, this time excluding Iraqis from the list of majority Muslim countries — Sudan, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia and Yemen — whose citizens and refugees are forbidden from entering the U.S. The ban will last 90 days until the government can design more “extreme vetting,” according to a statement from Trump. The new executive order also freezes travel for citizens of those countries who do not have U.S. visas, and suspends the entire U.S. refugee program for 120 days. Green card holders are exempted. Trump said the ban was intended to protect U.S. citizens from terror attacks. But Brooklyn, New York City and New York state officials ripped into the order as just another assault on Muslims and the U.S. Constitution, and one destined to actually make the country less safe. “At its heart, this policy is an affront to our national values, makes our country less safe, potentially isolates our allies and will almost certainly not pass constitutional muster,” Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-Brooklyn) said in a statement. “The president may try and change the window dressing with his latest order, but the central thrust remains an offensive, immoral, unconstitutional and un-American policy.” She added, “We will fight this latest executive order in the courts, in the halls of Congress, in the airports and in the streets.” Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (DGreenpoint-Queens-Manhattan) said the new travel ban was a rehash of the old one. “The new executive order is anything but. This repackaging of the original executive order is still clearly an unconstitutional and hateful action meant to ban Muslim and Refugees from coming to our shores,” she said. “Such hateful acts not only undermine our values and democracy but also threaten American security at home and abroad.” Comptroller Scott Stringer was equally scathing in his remarks. “Let’s call this new travel ban what it is: another paper-thin attempt to target people based on where they’re from, what religion they practice, and their cultural heritage,” he said. “It’s another all-out assault on the Constitution, and another attempt to target Muslims. This White House is showing, day after day, that it actively believes in discrimination and supports tearing families apart.” “This order makes us less safe — not more,” he said. “It doesn’t further U.S. interests — it undercuts our standing in the world. It doesn’t put ‘America first’ — it shreds the very fabric that binds us as a nation and as New Yorkers. It takes us in the wrong direction – fast.” U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand also pledged to fight the ban.
“President Trump’s updated executive order is still coldhearted, discriminatory and detrimental to our security. This order is antithetical to our American values and what the Statue of Liberty stands for,” she said. “I will continue to stand with New Yorkers in opposing President Trump’s discriminatory actions that hurt families in our community and undermine our national security.” Trump cited the close cooperative relationship between the United States and the Iraqi government and Iraq's commitment to combat ISIS to justify his different treatment of the country. The Department of Homeland Security, in an internal report, has allegedly disputed the idea that nationals from the countries chosen by Trump to be excluded were more likely to carry out terror-related activities. Intelligence experts say that very few people from those countries had actually been involved in terrorism-related crimes in the U.S., and that citizenship is no indicator of the likelihood of carrying out terrorist acts.
Chaos Following Initial Executive Order Widespread condemnation and protests followed Trump’s initial travel ban, which was blocked by the courts, as thousands of confused travelers were stranded at airports around the country. Brooklyn’s federal court and local officials were in the thick of it. Velazquez and Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D- Brooklyn and Manhattan) issued a joint release vowing to “fight this executive order in the streets, in the courts, anywhere, anytime.” Hundreds of protesters chanted outside the federal courthouse in Downtown Brooklyn in January as Hon. Ann Donnelly, federal judge for the Eastern District, issued a temporary stay of the order, the first of several. In just one of numerous rallies in Brooklyn, thousands of Yemenis and their supporters — waving banners and flags and chanting “USA!” — packed into Borough Hall Plaza. At a forum sponsored by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, protesters shouted down U.S. Rep. Dan Donovan when he tried to explain his support for the president’s controversial move.

A Team Grows in Brooklyn: New York Cosmos Welcomed to Coney Island ‘The Neighborhood and the Sport, It’s a Perfect Marriage. People will Come.’ By Scott Enman Brooklyn PHOENIX
The only thing missing from the New York Cosmos welcome party last Monday night was a ride on the iconic Coney Island Cyclone. With the team’s name lit up on the famous Parachute Jump and with the celebration happening at the legendary Gargiulo's Restaurant, it was safe to say that Brooklyn was all in for the squad that was once labeled “the most glamorous team in world football.” The Cosmos are one of the most storied franchises in sports history, having been led by Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé, who is undeniably regarded as the greatest athlete to ever play the Beautiful Game. His outstanding ball control, superb tactical ability and unbelievable runs through entire teams were admired in both Brazil and the United States on the pro level, where his gifted feet graced the pitches of Yankee Stadium and Giants Stadium. And while Pelé is long retired, his beloved team and its celebrated history remain, and both will be on full display come April 1 when the team plays its first home game at MCU Park. “This is about welcoming a major sports franchise, arguably one of the most successful soccer franchises in the entire country, right here to Coney Island,” Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce (BCC) President and CEO Andrew Hoan told the Brooklyn PHOENIX. “It’s great that there’s a team here, that MCU Park is going to have more people and more visitors to Coney Island … It’s a real simple thing: jobs, economic development, more year-round activities here in Coney Island. He added, “We wish their name was the ‘Brooklyn Cosmos,’ but we’ll go with the ‘New York Cosmos.’” The event was co-hosted by BCC and the Alliance for Coney Island and was held just across the street from the team’s new home. At the gathering, Hoan presented Cosmos Chairman Rocco B. Commisso with a “Brooklyn Cosmos” shirt, a hopeful gesture that the team might one day brandish the borough’s name across its jersey.

The Cosmos were warmly welcomed to Brooklyn with their name lit up on the famous Parachute Jump in Coney Island. When the New York Islanders moved to Brooklyn, although they did not change their name to the Brooklyn Islanders, they did embrace the borough by removing the Long Island silhouette from the team’s logo and introducing an alternative black and white jersey reminiscent of the Nets attire. Whether the Cosmos do the same remains to be seen. “The fact is that Brooklyn is the hot place to be in New York City right now,” Councilmember Vincent Gentile (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker HeightsBensonhurst) told the PHOENIX. “If a team is going to come into New York City, what better place than Brooklyn? We have all of the facilities here, it’s modern and it’s exciting. You can see the excitement in this room and it’s going to build as time goes on.

The United States Soccer Federation classifies professional soccer competitions into three divisions: Division I, Division II and Division III. Division I consists of Major League Soccer, home to the New York Red Bulls who play in Harrison, N.J. and New York City FC, who play at Yankee Stadium. Division II contains NASL and the United Soccer League. There are no sanctioned Division III leagues currently. The Cosmos have won eight NASL championships, including last season, and three times in the last four years. In a market with two professional soccer teams already, only time will tell if the Cosmos will be able to draw out Brooklynites, but Hoan isn’t worried. “Why ever leave Brooklyn when you can just come straight here to Coney Island?” he told the Eagle. “When you’re done with the game, you get on the Thunderbolt, you go ride the Cyclone, you stop into Luna Park, you go walk on the Boardwalk, you get a Nathan’s hot dog, you come for a great Italian meal at Gargiulo's. You get the complete Brooklyn package when you’re here at the New York Cosmos watching a game.” “I cannot think of any other sport that unites more people around the world than soccer,” Councilmember Mark Treyger (D-Coney IslandGravesend-Bensonhurst) told the PHOENIX. “We are also living in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in all of New York, if not all of America. I myself am a son of immigrants. I represent many families here that relish soccer.” He added, “It’s a great day for Coney Island and a great day for soccer. The neighborhood and the sport, it’s a perfect marriage. People will come.” Whether the Cosmos cement themselves as a Brooklyn staple to be mentioned among the likes of the landmarked Parachute Jump, Coney Island Cyclone and Gargiulo's Restaurant remains to be seen. Its quest for that designation begins in Brooklyn on April 1 at 7 p.m., against Miami FC.
Cuomo’s $1.4B ‘Vital Brooklyn’ Plan Invests Heavily in Central Brooklyn Continues from page 1
Vital Brooklyn Details OPEN SPACE AND RECREATION: Currently, Central Brooklyn residents have some of the fewest opportunities for physical fitness in the entire state Cuomo said. Vital Brooklyn would eliminate the area’s “park deserts” by enhancing amenities at more than a dozen community gardens and school yards to create public spaces for recreation, create recreation space at state-funded housing developments, and enhance existing recreational facilities through grants.
^ĐƌĞĞŶ ŐƌĂďƐ ĐŽƵƌƚĞƐLJ ŽĨ 'Žǀ͘ ƵŽŵŽΖƐ ŽĨĨŝĐĞ
The initiative, dubbed “Vital Brooklyn” would target and invest in eight areas in an integrated manner, Cuomo said. The largest chunks of the $1.4 billion would be spent on providing community health services ($700 million) and affordable housing ($563 million). The remaining $166 million would be spent on increasing access to open spaces and recreation, assuring access to healthy food, resiliency, economic development and job creation, youth education and development, and community violence prevention. “We are going to employ a new holistic plan that will bring health and wellness to one of the most disadvantaged parts of the state,” Cuomo told an approving crowd that included Central Brooklyn’s assemblymembers and representatives and union members. “Every New Yorker deserves to live in a safe neighborhood with access to jobs, health care, affordable housing, green spaces, and healthy food but you can't address one of these without addressing them all,” he said. Cuomo told the elected officials in the crowd that while the state would provide the funding, they would have to provide the leadership and bring in the community. “Central Brooklyn has 10 Assembly districts,” he said. “You can’t impose anything on the community.” He also warned them that it would not be easy to convince Albany, which will deal with the budget on April 1. “Be ready for war when we go back” to Albany,” he said.

HEALTHY FOOD: Vital Brooklyn includes farm-to-table initiatives that connect upstate growers with downstate families, add more than a dozen new farmer’s markets, provide job training for young people through the United Federation of Teachers, and provide existing community gardens with additional resources. COMMUNITY-BASED HEALTH CARE: There are only 55 primary care physicians per 100,000 people in Central Brooklyn, while the statewide average doubles that figure. Cuomo said the initiative would strengthen local health care facilities, increase access to quality services and preventive care, and develop a 36-site ambulatory care network. COMPREHENSIVE EDUCATION AND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT: The state would expose at-risk youth to hands-on learning on shoreline and habitat restoration efforts in Jamaica Bay through an expansion of the Billion Oyster Project and State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Environmental Justice programs. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND
JOB CREATION: Central Brooklyn’s unemployment rate is almost three percentage points higher than the New York City rate, Cuomo said. Vital Brooklyn would add 7,600 new hires through the Brooklyn Unemployment Strikeforce, expand the Green City Force AmeriCorps program for NYCHA youth, train 1,200 people in the construction trades through the expanded Unemployed Workers Training Program, train more than 300 students through CUNY’s Workforce Development Initiative, and deploy a Mobile Command Center to increase financial literacy. COMMUNITY-BASED VIOLENCE PREVENTION: The homicide rate in Central Brooklyn is almost triple the statewide average, Cuomo said. Vital Brooklyn would support community-based SNUG initiatives that conduct outreach and prevent gun violence, enhance more than 20 anti-violence programs and establish new Midnight Basketball programs — an idea his father championed, Cuomo said. AFFORDABLE HOUSING: Residents of Central Brooklyn pay approximately half of
their total household income on rent, Cuomo said, compared to 32 percent of household income statewide. Vital Brooklyn would build more than 3,000 new multi-family affordable housing units at six state-owned sites. The community would decide on options, including supportive services, housing for the developmentally disabled, seniors and formerly incarcerated; public open space; and pathways to home ownership. RESILIENCY: Central Brooklyn is vulnerable to extreme weather, while its need for electricity is increasing, Cuomo said. Vital Brooklyn would invest in sustainable practices, including renewable and redundant energy sources, energy efficiency and green jobs training. This includes 382 solar projects; 62 multi-family and 87 single-family energy efficiency projects and 15 new cogeneration projects. It would also advance the Clarkson Avenue Microgrid Project, linking Kings County Hospital, SUNY Downstate Medical Center and Kingsboro Psychiatric Center with a resilient source of on-site backup power.
Parker Wants NYS to Do More for Domestic Violence Victims By Paula Katinas Brooklyn PHOENIX
Domestic violence brings with it a heavy cost in the U.S., according to state Sen. Kevin Parker, who said the toll exceeds an astounding $5.8 billion a year. That total includes $4.1 billion for direct health care services for victims and nearly $1.8 billion in worker productivity losses, Parker said. Parker is pushing New York state to step up its efforts to combat the horrific crime and help victims pick up their lives. In an effort to reduce the number of domestic violence incidents in New York, Parker is proposing a package of four bills that he said would have a significant positive impact on the lives of those affected by the shocking crime taking place behind closed doors. “The unfortunate truth is that New York state needs to do more to ensure protection for victims of domestic violence,” Parker (DFlatbush-East Flatbush) said in a statement. “We need to pass the kind of legislation that gives greater support to domestic violence victims so they are able to maintain their jobs and stay in their homes. But at the same time, we need to work with survivors as well as current victims in identifying patterns with an aim at prevention and ultimately decreasing domestic violence cases in the long term.” The package of bills Parker is pushing in Albany during the current legislative session includes a bill to allow victims to take an unpaid leave of absence of up to 20 days.
Another bill would create a commission to study the negative implications of dating violence toward women. The third bill seeks to prevent domestic violence incidents from escalating by keeping guns out of the hands of known perpetrators. Parker is also pushing a fourth bill that would allow a victim to remove a violent felony offender from the deed of a co-owned property. The statistics surrounding domestic violence incidents in the U.S. are sobering, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. A woman is assaulted or beaten every
nine seconds, the coalition found. Several community organizations have endorsed Parker’s legislative push. “Domestic violence increases in intensity as time goes on,” said Nicole Sharpe, the CEO and founder of the Heather Hurley Foundation for the Prevention of Domestic Violence. “People need to understand that murder is always a possible eventuality. I speak from experience as I was orphaned when my father killed my mother. There are many victims/survivors in all facets of society. Domestic violence is a not a personal issue but a societal
problem that needs everyone's attention.” The more New York state raises awareness “the more we will see substantial progress as we move toward eradicating domestic violence,” Sharpe said. Carine Jocelyn, CEO of Diaspora Community Services, a program that provides resources and support for victims, called Parker a longtime supporter of her organization. “We applaud his continued efforts to protect victims of domestic violence and help them to regain stability and rebuild their lives,” Jocelyn said.

Jolly Rocco’s Tacos Hosts Serious Seminar, Kings County Housing Court Bar Meeting By Rob Abruzzese INBrooklyn
Susan Bahn, a senior staff attorney at the Legal Aid Society, was the guest speaker at this month’s meeting of the Kings County Housing Court Bar Association (KCHCBA), held last Thursday at Rocco’s Tacos in Downtown Brooklyn. Bahn discussed changes to a public assistance program designed to help families avoid eviction. “Right now there is such a homelessness crisis that the city is trying to keep people in their homes,” Bahn said. “One of the things that they are doing for some people was this program that would come in and provide a subsidy, but it wasn’t indexed for inflation.” The city recently agreed to a settlement that will affect the Family Eviction Prevention Supplement (FEPS), a program that was established in 2004 and has failed to keep up with increasing rents. As a result of that settlement, FEPS will be changed to the Family Homelessness Eviction Prevention Supplement (FHEPS), which will have slightly different eligibility requirements and significantly increased funding. “We’ve amended the complaint to be a class action and we’ve agreed not to sue the state within five years,” Bahn said. “In return, the state has agreed to index the new rent supplement that will be given to the families.” Under the old program, a family of three that was eligible for $850 per month are now eligible for $1,515 per month. The program will also be index which means that it will increase with
inflation. Bahn said that the new program could start as early as May, but it might not be ready until July. “The earliest would be May,” Bahn said. “It might be June or July. In the interim, you might want to adjourn a case or we’ll try
to get City FEPS in the interim.” Bahn also came to discuss Home Stability Support (HSS), a

program proposed by Queens Assemblymember Andrew Hevesi that is similar to FHEPS, but would have even more aid and would be extended to singles. HSS would bridge the current shelter allowance and 85 percent of the fair market rent and would give local districts the option to further raise the supplement to 100 percent. “We have seen that many families were able to get on these programs and stabilize themselves,” Bahn said. “I’ve seen many kids and many moms go to college and get jobs and get off of welfare because they have the stability of the rent being paid. The state has really liked the program too because it has been a stabilizing factor and a good way to get poor families back to work.” The meeting also provided members of the KCHCBA to meet with some of the newer judges in the housing court, Hon. Julie Poley and Hon. Frances Ortiz. Hon. Kevin McClanahan, who is returning following a brief sting in the Bronx, was also in attendance along with Hon. Cheryl J. Gonzales, Hon. Ingrid Joseph, Hon. Gary F. Marton and Hon. Harriet Thompson. All enjoyed the unique ambiance provided by Rocco’s Tacos. “It’s informal, but we like to get as many of the judges to come to our meetings as we can,” said KCHCBA President Michael Rosenthal. “It’s good because it gives us an opportunity to get to hear about any issues that they might be seeing or perhaps there is something that we’re seeing that they were unaware of.”

YE ON REAL ESTATE: Postcards From the Edge — of Sunset Park
Sunset Park Postcards There’s always something special to see in Sunset Park. As a preservation-obsessed Brooklynite, we’ve devoted photo features to the landmark-worthy blocks of this intriguing neighborhood. As a writer fascinated by immigrant cultures, we’ve devoted features to Fifth Avenue’s Hispanic food businesses and Eighth Avenue’s entrepreneurs from Hong Kong and China’s Fujian Province. As a believer in small businesses as big sources of job
creation, we’ve devoted yet other features to Industry City, Sunset Park’s mecca for tech and manufacturing companies. Now, we offer Postcards From the Edge. (Yes, we’re borrowing that phrase from the title of the late, great Carrie Fisher’s novel.) Namely the edge of Sunset Park. There are such interesting things out on the edges of the neighborhood.

A Toxic Dump Site Is Now Beautiful Bush Terminal Piers Park By Lore Croghan INBrooklyn
Being here is a very Zen experience. Bush Terminal Piers Park is an ethereal place when the waters of New York Harbor, which lap against its shoreline, are shrouded in mist. It is quiet and calm. There is noise, presumably industrial and traffic-related, but it is in the far distance, as if it’s coming from some other world. There is the occasional bellow of a ship’s horn, which sounds very solemn. There is the occasional honking of geese as they fly by, and once in a while, the faint hum of an airplane. A few fellow park-goers appear from time to time. The
vast spaces swallow up their words. The artificial turf on the park’s ball fields looks like emeralds. Tidal pools reflect nearby trees like mirrors. Ships ride at anchor just offshore. It’s hard to see where the gray-ish waters end and the skies begin. To the north, the World Trade Center and other Lower Manhattan skyscrapers are nearly obscured in fog. If you sit for a bit on a bench — and during that time, why not read Yeats’ poem, “The Lake Isle of Innisfree,” to match the park’s peaceful mood? — the sun might put in an appearance and burn off the mist. That will make the scenery even more splendid. Continued on page 8INB

A Toxic Dump Site Is Now Beautiful Bush Terminal Piers Park
Continued from page 7INB This would be a good time to pause and explain how on earth to find this place we’re rhapsodizing about. Its entrance is on
First Avenue in Sunset Park, in a spot you’ve possibly never seen unless you work at a Sahadi’s facility, which is located nearby. There’s a “park entrance” sign on a chain-link fence at the intersection of First Avenue and 43rd Street. Don’t be confused by the guardhouse in the middle of 43rd Street and the industrial buildings lining the street. You are free to walk down the sidewalk or roll along the bike lane. When you get to a building with a statue of Irving T. Bush above its front door, turn left and head for a gateway with the
name “Bush Terminal Park” on it. The park was created at a toxic dump site at a cost of $40 million. The money came from federal, city and state sources. It opened in November 2014 after more than a decade of remediation and conservation work. Sunset Park residents and environmental groups pushed hard to get it built, as our colleague Paula Katinas previously reported. Those of us who love Brooklyn’s waterfront say Thank You for their efforts.

An Apartment Building Called The Hamilton Replaces a Roller Rink
This apartment building is The Hamilton, where a roller rink once stood.
INBrooklyn photos by Lore Croghan
Here’s a glimpse of a model apartment at The Hamilton.
By Lore Croghan INBrooklyn
Once upon a time, a roller rink stood on the corner of Fort Hamilton Parkway and 60th Street. Now a handsome rental-apartment building called The Hamilton has taken its place. Those of us who don’t live in this area on the borders of Sunset Park and Borough Park know about the rink from lease documents in city Finance Department records. There’s a 1980 memorandum of lease between United Skates of America Inc. and Rogers Ford Inc., which at that time owned the building at 6002 Fort Hamilton Parkway. Plus there’s a 1982 consent and release document that indicates the lease was assigned to New Skates Inc. More recently, a 2005 city zoning variance notice notes that there had been a roller rink on the property’s first floor, but at that time, the rink had been closed for more than a decade. The document also says the second and third floors of that building had been occupied by “commercial and manufacturing uses” but were by that time largely vacant. That zoning variance allowed the industrial building to be converted to residential use. The property owner at that time was 6002 Fort Hamilton Parkway Partnership with Michael Mendlovic as partner, Finance Department records indicate. In 2015, ownership of the property was transferred to Fort Hamilton Group LLC with Michael Mendlovic as member, those records show. Halcyon Management Group was the co-developer of the recently completed residential conversion project. The Hamilton, which is five stories tall, has 92 market-rate apartments and uses 968 60th St. as its address. Tenants started settling into The Hamilton in October. They moved from Lower Manhattan’s Financial District, Williamsburg and Brownstone Brooklyn neighborhoods including Brooklyn Heights and Carroll Gardens, Linda Alexander, the developers’ spokeswoman, told us during a recent visit to the property. Asking rents start at $1,800 for studios and $2,300 for onebedroom apartments, she said. The first tenants at The Hamilton had to deal with an unexpected problem. National Grid didn’t hook up gas lines before they moved in. For three weeks, their gas stoves didn’t work. The landlord comped their first month’s rent and provided hot plates for cooking. The situation had a negative impact on The Hamilton’s leasing campaign. By the end of the year, leasing volume picked up again — and now nearly 70 percent of the units are rented, Alexander said. Other apartment buildings in Halcyon Management Group’s portfolio are 101 Bedford, which is in Williamsburg, and the Plex, which is in Crown Heights.
Drink, Shop at Liberty View Industrial Plaza Continued from page 8INB On the first floor, a Saks Fifth Avenue discount store called Off 5th can be found. Liberty View Industrial Plaza is at 850 Third Ave., near the shoreline at the northern edge of Sunset Park. The 1.1 millionsquare-foot building, which formerly was Storehouse #2 of the U.S. Navy Fleet Supply Base, is on the National Register of
Historic Places. Salmar Properties LLC with Salmar Realty LLC as its manager bought the former warehouse from the New York City Economic Development Corp. for $9,403,299 in 2011, city Finance Department documents indicate. Selim Rusi is the manager of Salmar Realty LLC, the records show.
