Political Bullying Has No Place in a Democracy

D

emocracy is what makes the United States of America a great country.

When it comes to the office of president, a president must not blackmail others into making decisions that would eventually cause harm to others. People are not looking for a hostile takeover of government or something similar to dictatorship,

From the Desk Of the PUBLISHER PHOENIX photo by Paula Katinas

One should be able to make decisions based on one’s own knowledge and opinion of what is right. If someone, especially a public servant, believes that no matter what the subject is, that they are doing the best job possible, they are addressing valid concerns and their opinions are honest, no one in higher authority has the right to tell them it's my way or else. One must feel free to make decisions based on the facts.

People elect a government because of more than one proposal. Many proposals were made during the presidential campaign. But after a campaign, no one expects that everything that was promised will be enacted, although they do expect that some of the promises will be put into effect.

Ortiz’ Plastic Bag Ban Is Too Heavy-Handed By Raanan Geberer Special to Brooklyn PHOENIX

rooklyn residents and New Yorkers in general will remember Mayor Michael Bloomberg, our city’s mayor just before Mayor Bill de Blasio. Bloomberg’s tenure had many positive achievements, but he seemed to be overly protective of the citizenry’s personal and health habits. Take smoking, for example. It’s an established scientific fact that second-hand smoke is bad for your health. Bloomberg, however, seemed to take smoking as a personal affront. Not only did he ban smoking in bars and restaurants, which is understandable, but he also banned smoking in parks and on beaches, endorsed a bill to make retailers hide tobacco products in places where customers couldn’t see them, and raised taxes on cigarettes 58 percent to make the city’s cigarette prices the highest in the nation. Bloomberg’s rather intrusive concern for the health of New Yorkers met its match, however, when he tried to ban the sale of “big gulp” large-size containers of sugary drinks. An appeals court struck the ban down— opponents pointed out that grocery stores that didn’t sell prepared food were unaffected by the law, while restaurants, sandwich shops and movie theaters were victimized. I was reminded of Bloomberg and the large-size soda controversy when I read in February that Brooklyn Assemblyman Felix Ortiz planned to introduce in a bill in the state Assembly to ban all disposable plastic bags, of the type you might get at the supermarket, with the exception of bags made of “compostable plastic” (he introduced such a bill on March 7). 2 • Brooklyn PHOENIX • Friday, March 24, 2017

Ortiz’ introduction followed the state’s legislature’s move to postpone implementation of an earlier bill, passed by the City Council last year. That bill, which was much more widely publicized, would have imposed a 5-cent fee for plastic bags — with some exemptions, including bags used to wrap fresh meat, fish, poultry or non-packaged fruits and vegetables.

Let your elected officials take care of matters that are going to serve you and the future of our young people better. Think about what lies ahead. And no one should support a political party or policy because he is pressured or threatened by others. Democracy is a means for the people to choose their leaders and to hold their leaders accountable for their policies and their conduct in office Government is based on the consent of the governed. In a democracy, the people are sovereign and they are the highest form of political authority. Power flows from the people to the leaders of government, who hold power only temporarily. Laws and policies require majority support in the legislature, but the rights of minorities are protected in various ways. The people are free to criticize their elected leaders and representatives and to observe how they conduct the business of government. Elected representatives at the national and local levels should listen to the people and respond to their needs and suggestions.

—Terrence Lyght, Publisher, Brooklyn PHOENIX

The harmful effects of plastic bags on the environment are a proven fact. They are not degradable. While some are sent to recycling plants, others usually end up either being burned or being sent to landfills. Large numbers of plastic bags, or pieces of these bags, also end up in the ocean, where they can be mistaken for food by fish or birds. And if you look at any park within the city, chances are you’ll see some plastic bags caught in the trees. What the bag-banners also don’t understand, however, is that these bags aren’t solely “single-use,” as Ortiz terms them in his proposed legislation. Many shoppers, such as myself, use these bags multiple times before finally disposing of them. When I get a plastic bag from the supermarket or the pharmacy, I always use it later on as a trash bag. Thus, I’m already cutting down on the number of plastic bags going into the waste stream. To me, there are many instances in which the coercive power of the state is needed. Among these are fighting violent crime, stopping those corporations that discharge tons of pollutants into rivers, fining big-time tax cheats, convicting Bernie Madoff-type con men, cracking down on manufacturers who deliberately produce unsafe equipment, taking dangerous drivers off the roads and much more. But I’m not so sure that penalizing some ordinary person who merely wants a plastic bag to take a few containers of yogurt home from the supermarket is one of these instances. Such a move will only create widespread resentment. Rather than coercion, maybe we should try incentives. Give shoppers an incentive each time they use a paper or cloth bag rather than a plastic one — maybe 5 cents per bag. Give the supermarkets themselves an incentive if they order biodegradable-type plastic bags or paper bags rather than the typical ones. It’s called positive reinforcement. If enough people get the message, it will definitely make a dent in the number of plastic bags that will end up in landfills or in the ocean.

East NY Man Charged for Posing as Immigration Employee, Stealing $5,000 from People Seeking Services Continues from page 1 Gonzalez said, “Not only is this defendant alleged to have stolen money, he betrayed immigrants who needed help. We will not allow scammers to take advantage of the current climate of fear and confusion in the immigrant community to line their own pockets while making false promises. Now more than ever, immigrants in our city must feel safe and know that law enforcement agencies are here to protect them. I am committed to preserving that trust and to prosecuting anyone who preys upon vulnerable members of this — and any other — community in Brooklyn.” Steven Choi, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition, said, “The New York Immigration Coalition commends District Attorney Gonzalez and his office for the arrest and charges against yet another unscrupulous provider of immigration services. In these terrifying times for immigrants, we have seen a sharp rise in schemes that seek to prey on their fears of deportation. The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office has been a tremendous ally to the New York Immigration Coalition and New York’s immigrant communities for many years. They are a key member of the Protecting Immigrant New Yorkers Task Force, and we look forward to continuing this close collaboration to ensure that our city remains a safe space for all.” The acting DA identified the defendant as Israel Torres, 57, of East New York. He was arraigned before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth Foley on an indictment in which he is charged with first-degree scheme to defraud, thirddegree grand larceny, fourth-degree grand larceny and two counts of petit larceny. He was ordered held on $10,000 bail and to return to court on March 29. He faces up to seven years in prison if convicted on the top count.

Gonzalez said that, according to the investigation, in April 2015, Torres allegedly met one victim whom he told that he was an employee of USCIS. The womantold Torres that her husband was undocumented and needed help getting his green card. Torres said that he could assist her in exchange for $3,200, which she paid him in cash. Torres did not supply a receipt for the payment and the victim’s husband never got his legal permanent residency. Also in April 2015, according to the investigation, Torres allegedly met another individual whom he told that he was an employee of USCIS and worked at 26 Federal Plaza. Torres told the victim that if she ever needed assistance, he could help her. The victim told Torres that she had her green card, but wanted help getting her U.S. citizenship. Torres said he could expedite the process and assist her with the paperwork, for which he charged her $1,000. She paid in cash, was provided no receipt and never received her citizenship. Gonzalez said that the investigation revealed a third victim whom Torres allegedly approached in March 2015. According to the investigation, Torres met the victim and told her he worked for USCIS at Federal Plaza. He asked her if she would be interested in bringing a family member to the U.S, saying he could help get the relative permanent residency. The victim mentioned she would like to bring over a relative from the Dominican Republic. Torres agreed to assist her and charged her $800, which she paid in cash. Torres did supply a receipt in this case. When the victim’s relative didn’t receive permanent residency or citizenship, the victim repeatedly asked for her money back, which Torres eventually returned, in part, in the amount of $300. The investigation revealed that no green card application, citizenship application or

related paperwork was filed with USCIS by Torres on behalf of any of the victims or their family members, nor was Torres employed by USCIS. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Fayola Charlet of the District Attorney’s Immigrant Fraud Unit, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney José In-

teriano, deputy chief; and under the overall supervision of Executive Assistant District Attorney William E. Schaeffer, chief of the District Attorney’s Investigations Division; as well as Assistant District Attorney Patricia McNeill, deputy chief. —Information from the Brooklyn DA’s Office

Man Charged with Murdering, Dismembering Wife Acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez on Thursday announced that a 42-year-old man from Prospect-Lefferts Gardens has been arraigned on an indictment charging him with the murder and dismemberment of his wife, whose remains have yet to be discovered. The defendant admitted to the crime, saying that he dismembered the body with a saw and removed the remains to trash cans. Acting District Attorney Gonzalez said, “The allegations against this defendant are truly disturbing and we are determined to hold him responsible for this barbaric murder.” Gonzalez identified the defendant as Phillip Martin of Linden Boulevard. He was arraigned before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Matthew D’Emic on one count of second-degree murder, one count of second-degree manslaughter and one count of concealment of a human corpse. He was ordered held without bail and to return to court on May 4. Martin faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted.

The acting DA said that, according to the investigation, relatives of the victim, 43-yearold Diana Rodriguez, became worried in the second week of February 2017, after they had not heard from her for almost a month. They went to her and Martin’s apartment to look for her. Martin told them that she had left him about a month earlier, but gave differing accounts regarding her whereabouts. The relatives called 911 and reported the victim missing. On Feb. 16, Martin was arrested and subsequently made statements to detectives, according to the investigation. He said that he killed his wife around his birthday on Jan. 14 and then kept the body in the living room for about a week. He then dismembered the remains with a saw and removed the body parts with a laundry cart and garbage bags, dumping them in trash cans on the street, according to his statement. The case was investigated by NYPD Detective Erin Pignatelli of the 70th Precinct Detective Squad and Detective Joseph Perry of Brooklyn South Homicide Squad. The case is being prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Joanna Lettieri, of the District Attorney’s Domestic Violence Bureau, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Michelle Kaminsky, bureau chief. —Information from the Brooklyn DA’s Office

Volunteer Lawyers Prepped for Citizenship Drive at Borough Hall

By Rob Abruzzese Brooklyn PHOENIX

With deportations on the rise under the new presidential administration, the Brooklyn legal community is coming together to help those affected. The Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams are planning an “Embrace Your Hyphen Citizenship Drive” for Saturday, during which they are expected to help more than 150 immigrants, all of whom are legal permanent residents already, to fill out their citizenship application forms. In preparation for that event, more than 100 attorneys gathered at Borough Hall on Wednesday night for a continuing legal education (CLE) seminar designed to teach young attorneys how to help people fill out

the N-400 application form. “Navigating government is hard, and if English is your second language, it is unbelievable how difficult it is,” Adams said. “Attorneys are used to walking into government buildings, accessing the court and interacting with police, but to the average person it is so intimidating. What they are doing here is not just helping people navigate the immigration process, but showing people that despite their status and language that they are deserving of dignity and respect.” A similar event was held at Borough Hall last year, where volunteer attorneys helped more than 30 applicants fill out their N-400 forms. This year, however, organizers expect at least 150 people to attend. “There is plenty of work to go around, so we’ve tried to organize as many volunteers as possible,” said Sarah Burrows, the pro bono manager at the VLP. “We’re also hop-

ing that this can be a continuing project over the coming months and coming years.” Most attorneys who attended were young, but Wednesday’s event also included roughly a dozen or so more experienced attorneys who don’t practice immigration law, but wanted to help out regardless. Law school students were also involved, but will have a smaller role to play during Saturday’s event. “All kinds of issues revolve around this application — fraud, confusion, reluctance to actually apply for a citizenship — due to lots of misinformation out there,” said Franklin S. Montero, an attorney who participated in last year’s event and helped organize Wednesday’s drive. “For that reason, these citizenship drives are helpful and the more they’re done, the bigger benefit to the community.” Volunteer attorneys were shown the

forms that they would be filling out on Saturday, and Montero took them through the forms page by page, explaining how they should be filled out. The entire event is streamlined so that attorneys, even the most inexperienced ones, will be able to take applicants through the process easily. Organizers explained that there will be supervising attorneys on hand throughout the event who will go over the applications afterward to check for errors. “When applicants come in, they’ll be prescreened before they see our volunteers,” said Yamilky Crisostomo, Latino outreach community coordinator for the borough president. “Volunteers will only be taking applicants who are eligible to apply for naturalization and have all of the documents needed to proceed. If walk-ins come on Saturday with more complicated cases, they will be referred to someone who can better handle their case.” Friday, March 24, 2017 • Brooklyn PHOENIX • 3

Shirley Chisholm Women of Distinction Awards Honor Accomplishments and Leadership

Brooklyn Pubic Library Brings Together 7 Women Who Exemplify Chisholm’s Epitaph: ‘Unbought & Unbossed!’ By Andy Katz Brooklyn PHOENIX

“Our confrontation must be against women in the kitchen. Our confrontation must be against blacks at the back door and women at the bedroom door. Those bad, old days are dead.” Thus spoke U.S. Rep. Shirley Chisholm some 35 years ago in a speech titled “A Coalition of Conscience.” Were Chisholm — the first African-American woman elected to Congress, and the first woman to seek a major party’s nomination for president of the U.S. — to have foreseen the difficulties her spiritual sisters continue to have in fulfilling her goals — that the “bad, old days” aren’t quite dead as she hoped — would she have continued her quest to create a color-blind and genderneutral playing field?

City Councilmembers Jumaane Williams for the 45th District and Laurie Cumbo of the 35th took turns announcing honorees who, in addition to Perez, included the founding Principal of the Khalil Gibran Academy Debbie Almontaser; NYPD Community Affairs Officer for the 63rd Precinct Ronnette Benjamin; Joo-Hyun Kang, director of Communities United for Police Reform; attorney and state Committee Member for the 44th District Lori Knipel; Principal and CEO of D.C. advocacy group Impact Strategies Angela Rye; and Evelyn Ortiz, chief external affairs officer for Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow. The evening began with a benediction from the Rev. Naomi Louis: “May you heal those who are broken hearted, wipe away their tears, and God, may they have faith tonight!” As they have in virtually every political event for the past quarter, the Trump admin-

istration and its policies loomed over the presentations like thunderheads filling a vast Midwestern sky. Accepting her award, Almontaser evoked the Yemeni bodega proprietors who gathered outside Borough Hall to protest the president’s immigration ban. “I was so proud of them,” she said. Many had stayed open throughout the day to avoid disappointing their regular customers before closing and making their way downtown. “They showed how much they cared about the people in their communities,” she concluded. Also in reference to immigration policy, Perez said: “Mothers are being stripped away from their families and deported. I think about them. And I organized the march on Washington.” Cumbo said, “Our president has talked about how he’s going to restore law and order … by cutting billions from school and education!”

Unquestionably yes! answered the activists, political and community leaders gathered last Friday night at the Brooklyn Public Library’s Dweck Auditorium to bestow Shirley Chisholm Women of Distinction awards on seven women whose efforts made special impact in their communities. Their roles ranged from the NYPD 63rd Precinct Community Affairs Bureau officer to the director of Communities United for Police Reform. “There is something great in all of you!” NYC Justice League co-founder and co-organizer of the D.C. Women’s March Carmen Perez reminded the audience: “There is no Superman or Superwoman on the horizon. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for all along!”

“We are being told we will be deported, we will be denied healthcare,” added keynote speaker NYC Commissioner of Immigrant Affairs Nisha Agarwal, also in reference to Washington’s new immigration policies. “But we will not back down.” This year’s event marked the fourth annual award presentation. Past honorees include Muslim political activist and Bay Ridge citizen Linda Sarsour, news anchor for PIX 11 Sukanya Krishnan, YWCA CEO Martha Kamber, and community organizer and Director of East Flatbush Village Association Monique Waterman. Remembering Chisholm herself, Knipel pointed out: “She was a woman who had what we call chutzpah! When she first came to Congress, they assigned her to the Agricultural Committee. She said, ‘I’m from Brooklyn! What are you trying to do to me?’” “I met her when she was running for president in ’72,” Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer told the audience. “What I loved about her … she was constantly doing things that people did not expect her to do.” “It takes a little bit of crazy to do the work we do,” said Perez.

Queen Geniuses and Sen. Parker Host 5th Annual Girls Empowerment Conference Brooklyn PHOENIX

On Saturday, March 18, more than 100 young girls between the ages of 14-18 joined state Sen. Kevin Parker and Queen Geniuses Founder and President Regine Roy for the fifth annual “It’s In Your Hands” Girls Empowerment Conference at Medgar Evers College in Crown Heights. According to Sen. Parker’s office, the event catered to young girls from across the five boroughs and had a full day of programming, including inspiring presentations, a panel discussion, live performances by local cultural organizations and five breakout session workshops all focusing on supporting students to take full ownership and responsibility over their future legacies. “A little bit of inspiration goes a long way. It is important to give young ladies a platform to confidently share their hopes, dreams and aspirations with each other,” said Roy. “They are able to develop a strong and purposeful foundation for themselves when given the opportunity to share their brilliance with one another. I am thankful to Sen. Kevin Parker for his continuous partnership and for making the empowerment of women and girls a priority.” Activist and Sexuality Educator Ericka Hart served as the keynote speaker for this year's event. Music industry executives, entrepreneurs and community leaders also supported the event by offering personal stories about their professional journeys and sharing powerful messages for the young women to internalize throughout the day. Queen Geniuses, Inc. is an educational consulting company that offers the “Reclaiming Your Throne” leadership development curriculum that engages young women in discussions around identity, obstacles, goals, love and sex, family and the media, according to the group. The series enhances students’ critical thinking skills, soft skills development and sense of selfactualization. With the opportunity for teenage girls to figuratively sit in their throne, they get to assess how they are governing over their personal empire, their lives. "I have been a proud partner since the inception of the conference, and I truly believe in what comes out of the daylong event,” said Parker. “Ms. Roy’s dedication and confidence in our collective ability to improve the lives of others drives her every year to produce a better conference for our young girls, and I am humble to be a part of such a timely and essential event.”

Are the New York Cosmos Ready To Go Big Time? By Scott Enman Brooklyn PHOENIX

A third Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise could be coming to New York City if New York Cosmos owner Rocco B. Commisso has his way. Last Tuesday, the Cosmos hosted a media day at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge where Commisso, along with Head Coach Giovanni Savarese, fielded questions from reporters. Commisso articulated his desire to leave his mark on the Cosmos by having the team one day join MLS. He also criticized the current format of American professional soccer, saying the country should adopt a promotion/relegation system, similar to what is used in European leagues. “The guy that bought New York City FC, interestingly enough, he also bought Manchester City,” said Commisso. “The guy that bought the Red Bulls, he also has a team in Germany. He’s accepting and he’s done very well by the way. [RB Leipzig] moved from the third to the second to the first division. It worked out very well. “Why couldn’t it work out the same way here? In my opinion, that’s probably the number one reason why American soccer has failed professionally in this country. This is an administered game, an Americanized type of game and American rules as opposed to international rules of how soccer should be played. It’s an international game.” The Cosmos currently compete in the

North American Soccer League (NASL), a second-tier professional soccer league. The United States Soccer Federation classifies professional soccer competitions into three divisions: Division I, Division II and Division III. Division I consists of Major League Soccer, home to the New York Red Bulls, who play in Harrison, N.J., and New York City FC, who play at Yankee Stadium. Division II contains NASL and the United Soccer League. There are no sanctioned Division III leagues currently. “All the teams that made investments in Europe including the most recent ones — the Chinese, the Indonesians, the Americans in England and so on — they all understood how the game was played,” said Commisso. “Nobody guaranteed them that as a result of making a multi-hundreds of million-dollar investment … that they may not get relegated tomorrow. “Typically, when you go into business like I do, you accept competition as being part of the game and you have to compete. Here, competition is administered by some god up there that says it is what it is and that’s the way it’s going to be … Look, I’m not ready to delve into this because I’m sure that in less than 24 hours all of the shotguns will be after me.” Commisso referenced the new expansion MLS side Minnesota United and how the team was only allowed to enter the MLS due to their wealth. He alluded to the fact that because the team lost its first two games 5-1 and 6-1 respectively, that they aren’t quite competitive enough for the league.

Last season, Minnesota United finished 5th in the NASL combined playoffs standings with a total of 41 points, compared to the Cosmos' league-leading 65 points. Under a promotion/relegation system, the Cosmos would have been promoted to MLS for winning the league, while Minnesota United would have stayed in NASL. However, because Minnesota United was able to secure a $150 million soccer-specific stadium and pay a hefty expansion fee, it was allowed to join MLS. For the Cosmos to make the jump to the MLS under the league’s current rules, they would need a soccer specific stadium that is much larger than their current home at Coney Island’s MCU Park, the longtime home to the Brooklyn Cyclones. Rumors have circulated about a stadium being built in Flushing, Queens near Citi Field where the New York Mets play. In addition to fielding questions from the press, the Cosmos 2017 squad was introduced, the team showcased their new kits and team representatives articulated the team’s expectations for the upcoming spring and fall seasons. The Cosmos have won eight NASL championships, including last season, and three times in the last four years. The Cosmos are one of the most storied franchises in sports history, having been led by Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé, who is undeniably regarded as the greatest athlete to ever play the Beautiful Game. Other notable players include Italian striker Giorgio Chinaglia and West German defender Franz Beckenbauer. The team kicks off its home opener on April 1 at 7 p.m. against Miami FC.

Parker: Democrats Trying to Save Health Care in New York State By Paula Katinas Brooklyn PHOENIX

As President Donald Trump and the Republican leadership in Congress move toward repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Democrats in the New York state Senate are working on a plan to ensure that the state’s residents will still be able to get insurance coverage. Regine Roy, founder of Queen Geniuses, and state Sen. Kevin Parker at the “It’s In Your courtesy of Sen. Parker’s office Hands” event.

State Sen. Kevin Parker (DFlatbush-East Flatbush) and

members of the state Senate Democratic Conference are proposing legislation aimed at helping New Yorkers who might be in danger of losing insurance as a result of a rollback of Medicaid expansion, the loss of federal credits to purchase insurance or the elimination of a program for low-income residents who are not eligible for Medicaid. Parker estimated that approximately 2.7 million New Yorkers would fall into one of those categories. The Democrats’ plan, called the Protection Against Repeal Bill, calls for the creation of a single-payer health system that all New York state residents could enter. The legislation would en-

shrine the health insurance exchange created under the Affordable Care Act as a public benefit corporation that would continue to allow New Yorkers to compare and purchase affordable health insurance. Since the exchange went live in 2013, New York state’s rate of uninsured individuals dropped from 10 percent to 5 percent, according to officials, who said 3.6 million New Yorkers have obtained health insurance through the exchange. The Protection Against Repeal Bill also seeks to ensure that health insurance protections provided under the ACA would remain in effect in New York State even if the ACA is repealed. “The legislative package pro-

posed today by our conference aimed at preserving health care coverage for New Yorkers is essential, especially in this day and age of exclusionary policies coming out of Washington,” Parker said in a statement. The ACA has provided millions of working families in New York with lifesaving health care, according to Parker, who said it is imperative “that we continue to protect their rights, despite any plans President Trump or any coalition may have to strip health care from New York state residents.” Claudya C. Verdiner, site director at Flatbush Family Health Center at NYU Langone, called health insurance “a vital aspect of everyday life.”

Iggy Pop Life Class by Jeremy Deller Artist Jeremy Deller used the traditional life drawing class to stage a performative event with Iggy Pop as model and subject. Archestratus Books + Foods presents “Stories My Friends Tell Me” on Wednesday, March 29. Priscila De Carvalho: Before Now An installation inspired by encounters with nature, the environment and the past, represented by Brooklyn Bridge Park. When: Daily, through April 4, 8 a.m. - 11 p.m. Where: DUMBO/Brooklyn Bridge Park (99 Plymouth St.) Liinu Grönlund: It Could Have Been “It Could Have Been” is a video essay — an associative collection of ideas, diary notes and dreamy images combining environmental issues and politics of recent years. When: Thursday through Sunday, through April 9, 1-6 p.m. Where: Bushwick/Five Myles (558 St. John’s Place) Moving On Sara Erenthal shows paintings that illustrate seminal moments in her life. To the artist, the vividness with which her memory recalls them means that they were clearly central experiences in the making of the woman Sara Erenthal. When: Thursday through Sunday, through April 9, 1-6 p.m. Where: Bushwick/Five Myles ( 558 St. John’s Place) Hervé Tullet: This Isn’t Trash Wildly imaginative illustrator Hervé Tullet — best known for the beloved children’s book “Press Here” — opens the 2017 Tilt Kids Festival with the first-ever exhibition of new works in New York. When: Thursday through Sunday, through April 15, 1-7 p.m. Where: Cobble Hill/Invisible Dog Art Center (51 Bergen St.) Wait Watchers For this work, Haley Morris-Cafiero set up her camera in public

areas and photographed herself performing mundane tasks, later examining the images for critical or questioning body language from passersby. Morris-Cafiero considers this work to be a social experiment, engineering a moment when curious strangers become the object of scrutiny. When: Tuesday through Saturday, through April 21, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. Where: DUMBO/United Photo Industries (16 Main St.) Do What I Want: The Experimental World of Arthur Russell Twenty-five years after Arthur Russell’s death, BAM Visual Art, Russell’s estate and Tom Lee (Russell’s partner) present a selection of materials belonging to the late composer, cellist and electronic music pioneer. This first-ever public exhibition features more than 150 pieces of original ephemera and reproductions, including a selection of Russell’s own notes, scores, photos, test pressings, show fliers and album covers alongside never-before-heard recordings from the artist’s personal working tapes. When: Daily, through May 14 Where: Fort Greene/BAM Peter Jay Sharp Building (30 Lafayette Ave.) Multilocational See multilocational artworks by Natalia Nakazawa and Cecile Chong. Multilocational is defined as “of, pertaining to, or being present in more than one location.” It subtly plays on the words multicultural or multinational, or “of mixed ancestry or residence.” When: Fridays, through June 25, 3-6 p.m. Where: Park Slope/Old Stone House (336 Third St.) Georgia O’Keeffe: Living Modern This exhibit takes a new look at how the renowned modernist artist proclaimed her progressive, independent lifestyle through a selfcrafted public persona, including her clothing and the way she posed for the camera. The exhibition expands our understanding of O’Keeffe by focusing on her wardrobe, shown for the first time alongside key paintings and photographs. It confirms and explores her determination to be in charge of how the world understood her identity and artistic values. When: Wednesday through Sunday, through July 23, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. (Thursdays, 11 a.m. - 10 p.m.) Where: Prospect Heights/Brooklyn Museum (200 Eastern Parkway) Forged Worlds This outdoor photography exhibition showcases work by seven artists whose photographic practices revolve around the physical construction of fictional landscapes. Installed on a fence beneath the Manhattan Bridge, this photo installation invites viewers to take a closer look and perhaps allow themselves to be carried away — if even for a moment — in thoughts and lands so strange, yet so familiar, so close to home. Decades later, these largely unseen photographs are being exhibited for the first time. Sen. Tony Avella Joins Brownsville Cultural Coalition’s Fight to Save Our Lady of Loreto Here’s a look at Our Lady of Loreto in the Ocean Hill section of Brownsville before Winter Storm Stella left ice and snow on the surrounding sidewalks.

Ocean Hill-Brownsville Church Threatened With Demolition By Lore Croghan INBrooklyn

Madonna mia! Our Lady of Loreto has a new protector: State Sen. Tony Avella. The Queens Democrat — and mayoral candidate — has stepped forward in the face of fresh threats by a Catholic Charities of Brooklyn and Queens subsidiary to demolish the shuttered century-old church in the Ocean Hill section of Brownsville. Avella has joined a campaign by the Brownsville Cultural Coalition and the group’s long-time supporter, Assemblymember Latrice Walker (D-Brownsville), that calls for the landmarking of Our Lady of Loreto and its adaptive reuse as a cultural center. Why has Avella gotten involved in the effort to save a church that’s not in his state senate district, or even his home borough? “I have a long-standing reputation of being a preservationist dating back to my days in the City Council,” he told INBrooklyn before a press conference he recently held outside the cast-stone church at 124 Sackman St. “A number of groups reached out to me [about Our Lady of Loreto]. When anybody asks me for help, I go.” Catholic Charities Progress of Peoples Development Corp. (POP), which is now threatening to tear down the church, was going to do so several years ago in order to build low-income housing.

But following protests by Brownsville activists, the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation determined that Our Lady of Loreto and the rectory next to it were eligible for listing on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. In 2010, the state organization crafted a letter of resolution saying that the rectory could be torn down and replaced by lowincome housing, but the church building should not be torn down. Its continued existence would be the “primary mitigation” to make up for the demolition of the rectory. The state organization signed the letter of resolution. So did POP and three government housing agencies. Now, speaking of that letter of resolution, Avella told INBrooklyn, “The church has failed to live up to their agreement with the state. That is really distressing.” Avella is a Catholic, he told INBrooklyn. His home parish is St. Mel’s in Flushing, Queens.

‘A Gem That Should Not Be Destroyed’ At the press conference, Avella vowed to work with the Brownsville Cultural Coalition and Assemblymember Walker to get the historic church turned into a cultural center. Supporters of Our Lady of Loreto’s preservation want to make the historic site “a cultural beacon,” Walker said at the press conference. “Our advocacy, our resiliency will not be muted,” she said. Miriam Robertson, the executive director of Brownsville Heritage House, called out Catholic Charities during the press conference. “You have allowed the building to go into disrepair,” Robertson said, pointing to Our Lady of Loreto, whose lovely stained-glass windows have been removed and either replaced with plywood or left open to the weather. St. Elias, a Landmarked Greenpoint Church, Is for Rent By Lore Croghan INBrooklyn

Holy moly. One of the most beautiful churches in North Brooklyn is on the rental market. There’s 7,100 square feet of columnless space available at St. Elias (Greek Rite) Roman Catholic Church, a post-Civil War stunner located on a landmarked block that’s part of the Greenpoint Historic District. There are also basement spaces that are 5,700 square feet and 4,000 square feet in size. The church was sold to a real estate developer and vacated by its congregation a decade ago. It’s at 145-149 Kent St. near the corner of Manhattan Avenue. The red-brick sanctuary has striped masonry around its arched doors. An eye-pleasing polygonal Sunday school is attached to the sanctuary. Continued on page 9INB

Sen. Tony Avella Joins Brownsville Cultural Coalition’s Fight to Save Our Lady of Loreto Continued from page 7INB She’s one of the leaders of the Brownsville Cultural Coalition. Another one of the group’s leaders, Les Ford of Nia Theatrical Production Company, said Brownsville kids who want to grow up to be sculptors, playwrights and dancers need a place in the neighborhood to call their own. And Our Lady of Loreto should be that place. “This church is a gem that should not be destroyed,” Ford said. Another coalition member, Louis J. Gallo Jr., said at the press conference that demolishing Our Lady of Loreto would amount to “artistic and aesthetic criminality.” Gallo is the New York State chairman of the Commission for Social Justice, the anti-defamation arm of the Order Sons of Italy in America.

Landmark-Worthy Loreto The Brownsville Cultural Coalition is a group of neighborhood activists and arts organization heads, former parishioners and preservationminded Italian-Americans. Avella has been urging Monsignor Alfred LoPinto, CEO of the Catholic Charities Progress of Peoples Development Corp., to meet with the coalition. The Catholic Charities of Brooklyn and Queens subsidiary has leased Our Lady of Loreto for 53 years with an option to extend the lease term to 99 years. “[I]t has been made very clear that Catholic Charities has not fulfilled its responsibilities to make good faith efforts to preserve [Our Lady of Loreto] and instead is hastening its efforts to have the Church demolished,” Avella wrote in a letter to Monsignor LoPinto and Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio. In a letter to Avella, Monsignor LoPinto said that it would cost $9 million to stabilize Our Lady of Loreto. The monsignor said the former church building will be demolished once a demolition permit is received, and affordable housing will be constructed on the site where it now stands. In a letter to City Councilmember Rafael Espinal, who reps the area where Our Lady of Loreto is located, Avella said Our Lady of Loreto is “eminently qualified to be a protected New York City landmark.” Avella added, “It would be a travesty were this incredible landmark destroyed.” Our Lady of Loreto, whose architectural style is neoclassical Roman Renaissance, was designed and built by Italian immigrants, and for Italian immigrants. It was a place of refuge from the prejudice of Catholics of

other ethnicities. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Italians were a downtrodden minority in New York City. They were often forced to sit in the basements or the back sections of other ethnic groups’ churches. Avella has a track record as a champion of ItalianAmericans’ cultural heritage. During his tenure in the City Council before being elected state senator, he was the founder and chairman of the first Italian-American Caucus of the City Council. The caucus fought against stereotyping of the ethnic group.

A $12,000 Grant From the Landmarks Conservancy Brownsville Cultural Coalition members are thankful Avella is their ally. “We feel very much encouraged by all the great support we’ve been getting from politicians and the community,” Ford told INBrooklyn in an interview prior to the press conference. “The community is solidly behind us.” Other support includes a $12,000 grant from the New York Landmarks Conservancy for a conditions assessment and feasibility analysis for Our Lady of Loreto, Robertson told INBrooklyn in an interview prior to the press conference. The grant was awarded on the condition that the coalition gets access to the church building. Robertson said the Landmarks Conservancy has also lined up possible funding for the creation of the cultural center. There is already an enormous amount of affordable housing in Brownsville, including New York City Housing Authority developments, Robertson said. “When you’ve got affordable housing, you need amenities,” she pointed out. “A cultural center brings economic development. If you’ve got a cultural center, it brings more restaurants and other cultural things,” she said. “With change coming to Brownsville, this building is a focal point. By preserving it, we can keep a sense of history, which represents the past, and bring a sense of hope, which represents the present and the future. “This church is meant to be saved,” Robertson added. “The fact it is still standing is divine intervention.”

The Greenpoint Historic District, where St. Elias is located, is full of architectural eye candy — such as 144 Franklin St., the building on the corner.

Continued from page 8INB We’ll tell you more about the church’s historic pedigree in a minute. First we’ll fill you in on who owns it. In 2007 an LLC with Herbert Hirsch as manager paid $3.5 million for the church plus its next-door rectory, city Finance Department records indicate. The rectory building’s address is 143 Kent St. The seller of both buildings was St. Elias (Greek Rite) Roman Catholic Church. St. Elias had purchased the church in 1943 from the Reformed Dutch Church at Green Point, Finance Department records show. That’s not a typo. “Green Point” is spelled as two words in the deed.

William B. Ditmars Designed the Church The Reformed Dutch Church had constructed the handsome house of worship in 1870. The designer was Brooklyn architect William B. Ditmars, and the style is a combination of Early Romanesque Revival and High Victorian, the city Landmarks Preservation Commission’s 1982 designation report about the Greenpoint Historic District notes. The design included a 175foot spire that was never built, the designation report notes. The Sunday school portion of the church was designed by a different architect, W. Wheeler Smith. It’s meant to look like a medieval Italian baptistry. A historical footnote about the Reformed congregation that built 145-149 Kent St.: In an online posting, a commenter ID’d as DHM says that in 1937, the Rev. Benny Benson set fire to a Bible

while in the church pulpit and said, “If nobody is going to read this thing, you might as well burn it,” or words to that effect. Also, a footnote about the careful upkeep of the church building over the years: In 1992, the New York Times reported that St. Elias was honored by the Landmarks Preservation Commission for “sensitive repair and restoration” of the church’s façade and stained-glass windows. And a footnote about the Greek Rite faith of the Kent Street church’s former owners: It had its origins in CarpathoRus, AKA Carpatho-Ruthenia, a region between present-day Slovakia and Ukraine. It sprang up because of ninthcentury evangelization by Saints Cyril and Methodius from the Byzantine Church of Constantinople. The expression “Greek Rite” is a reference to this faith’s origins in the Byzantine Church. The worshippers are Slavic, or the descendants of Slavic people.

INSET: There are many eye-pleasing elements in St. Elias’s design, such as arched doorways. INBrooklyn photos by Lore Croghan

Mickey Rourke Gave it a Look Several Years Ago Now, back to more worldly concerns. The church building’s current owner, Herb Hirsch, is a developer with experience in converting religious buildings to residential use. Hirsch Enterprises Inc. transformed the Romanesque Revival-style former Parish House of St. George’s Church in Manhattan’s Stuyvesant Square District into The Abbey Condominium. St. Elias, a Landmarked Greenpoint Church, Is For Rent

The polygonal section of this building is the former Sunday school of St. Elias in Greenpoint. Continued from page 9INB But Hirsch hasn’t done a residential conversion of St. Elias. Instead, at various times starting in 2008, he either offered it for sale or rent. In 2010, after Hirsch advertised the church for sale as a “Live/Work Mansion” with a $7.1 million asking price, the Wall Street Journal reported that celebrities including actor Mickey Rourke had checked out the property. At that time, condo conversion was under consideration as an alternative if the church didn’t sell as a single-family home, the Journal reported. Interior upgrades including excavation in a basement and the addition of steel beams and concrete floors would have then cost $3.5 million to $4 million. Two years later, Hirsch did make a sale — not of the church building, but of the former rectory at 143 Kent St. Purchaser 143 Kent Street LLC paid $2.25 million for the rectory, with Jennifer Dudley signing the deed on the buyer’s behalf, Finance Department records indicate. The Queen Anne-style house was designed by architect Theobald Engelhardt in 1889. See brooklyneagle.com for photos of the former rectory and other eye-catching properties on landmarked blocks near St. Elias.

New Free Platform Provides Tools, Connections for Small Biz to Succeed The odds are usually stacked against small business, with limited budgets and time. Entrepreneur Madara Melne decided to take action and build a platform called CatchSmart that provides the resources needed by indie makers and retailers to better compete with big business. “With the right information and IT support, we can level the playing field a bit, and give small business owners a bigger voice in the market,” Melne said. Retailers and makers are invited to sign up now. There is no cost to join. CatchSmart is a social network for independent makers and retailers to connect, develop business relationships and promote goods to customers interested in shopping local. Melne said, “It was created to give a leg up to small businesses who often lack the infrastructure, manpower and resources to expand their business.” Melne chose Brooklyn as the launch market because of its thriving entrepreneurial scene. She added that “CatchSmart exists purely to benefit the future of this community, driving regional development and powering economic growth.” The site works as an online cooperative, with the goal of bringing similar competitive advantages to indie businesses currently available only to global companies. It offers an easy-touse platform for smaller business owners to discover each other, grow faster, better control the production process and avoid waste and overproduction. CatchSmart believes that by offering a robust network and tools to small business owners, each person has a better chance of achieving their dreams while also driving the local economy. It’s quick and easy to sign up. Makers and retailers can join at catchsmart.com/makers-and-retailers. Members get access to tools that help them run smarter and more productively. Tools include a social impact score and access to local market data and trends, leading to more informed decisions. Members also have access to the CatchSmart quality QR code system, lowering costs and minimizing the difficulties that come with pricing, inventory and shelf placement. By linking local retailers and makers on one user-friendly site, CatchSmart aims to empower the local economy and minimize waste through overproduction. Consumers can also use the site or the app to discover the origin of their purchases and rate retailers. Encouraging people to shop locally makes a social impact by

boosting the local economy and helping the community. The site has created an interactive game that demonstrates how to make this impact.
