Despite a plea for bipartisanship by Brooklyn Reps. Hakeem Jeffries and Jerrold Nadler, Republicans in the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday voted down a resolution demanding an investigation into communications between President Donald Trump, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Trump campaign officials with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his agents. Women’s History Month Comes to a Close s late as the 1970s, women’s history was virtually unknown. Then, the women’s movement initiated a “Women’s History Week” celebration for 1978.
Harriet Tubman’s Achievements

The week of March 8, International Women’s Day, was chosen as the focal point From the Desk of the observance. Women’s History Week activities met Of the PUBLISHER with an enthusiastic response, and dozens of schools planned special programs. More than 100 women participated by doing special presentations in classrooms throughout the country, and an annual “Real Women” essay contest drew hundreds of entries. In 1979, Molly Murphy MacGregor, a member of the National Women’s History Project, was invited to participate in the Women’s History Institute at Sarah Lawrence College. When the participants learned about the success of the Sonoma County’s Women’s History Week celebration, they decided to initiate similar celebrations within their own organizations, communities and school districts. They also began an effort to establish a “National Women’s History Week.” In February 1980, President Jimmy Carter declared the week of March 8, 1980 as National Women’s History Week. In the same year, Democratic Rep. Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, who later became a senator, and Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah co-sponsored a Congressional Resolution for National Women’s History Week 1981. This co-sponsorship demonstrated the wide-ranging political support for recognizing, honoring and celebrating the achievements of American women.

Across the nation, state departments of education encouraged celebrations of National Women’s History Week. By 1986, 14 states had already declared March as Women’s History Month. In 1987, Congress declared March as National Women’s History Month. A special presidential proclamation is issued every year which honors the extraordinary achievements of American women. One of the best-known examples is Harriet Tubman.
Known as the “Moses of her people,” Harriet Tubman was a former slave who escaped to freedom and then helped other slaves reach freedom, as a “conductor” on the Underground Railroad. Tubman later served as a scout, spy, guerilla soldier and nurse for the Union Army during the Civil War, and is considered the first African-American woman to serve in the military. Like many slaves, Tubman’s exact birth date is unknown, but she is believed to have been born between 1820 and 1822 in Dorchester County, Maryland. Born Araminta Ross, the daughter of slaves Harriet Green and Benjamin Ross, Tubman had eight siblings. By the time she was 5, Tubman’s owners rented her out to neighbors as a domestic servant. An early sign of her resistance to slavery came at age 12, when she intervened to keep her master from beating a slave who tried to escape. She was hit in the head with a two-pound weight, leaving her with a lifetime of severe headaches and narcolepsy. Although slaves were not legally allowed to marry, Tubman entered a marital union with John Tubman, a free black man, in 1844. She took his last name and renamed herself Harriet. Tubman did not create the Underground Railroad; it was established in the late 18th century by black and white abolitionists. Tubman probably benefited from this network of escape routes and safe houses in 1849, when she and two brothers escaped north. Her husband refused to join her, and by 1851 he married another woman. Tubman returned to the South at least a dozen times, personally bringing approximately 80 slaves from bondage via the Underground Railroad and assisting many others. Her success led slave owners to post a $40,000 reward for her capture or death. Tubman was never caught and never lost a “passenger.” She participated in other anti-slavery efforts, including John Brown’s 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Through the Underground Railroad, Tubman learned the towns and transportation routes of the South – information that made her important to Union military commanders during the Civil War. As a Union spy and scout, Tubman often impersonated an elderly woman, wandering the streets and learning about Confederate troop placements and supply lines. Tubman helped many slaves find food, shelter and even jobs in the North. As a nurse, she also dispensed herbal remedies to black and white soldiers alike. After the war, Tubman raised funds to aid freedmen, joined the fight for women’s suffrage, cared for her aging parents, and worked with writer Sarah Bradford on her autobiography. She married Union soldier Nelson Davis, also born a slave, who was more than 20 years her junior. They lived in Auburn, N.Y., and adopted a daughter in 1874. After Davis died in 1888, she mounted an extensive campaign for a military pension and was finally awarded $8 per month in 1895. In 1896, she established the Harriet Tubman Home for the Aged.

Republicans Shoot Down Congressman Jeffries’ Resolution To Investigate Trump’s Ties to Russia Continues from page 1 The resolution was sponsored by Jeffries and Rep. Ted Lieu, a Democrat from California. “Russian interference in our election, possibly aided and abetted by the Trump campaign, is not a Democratic issue or a Republican issue, it’s an American issue,” Jeffries said a hearing before the vote. “We need honesty here … so the American people can be assured that there is not a cancer at the heart of the administration,” Nadler told the committee. Nadler introduced a similar Resolution of Inquiry in February. This resolution was also shot down. Lieu said that there is no greater issue facing our nation “than to find out of there was collusion last year between the Trump
campaign and Russia. At stake is the legitimacy of the current administration.” Committee chairman Republican Bob Goodlatte dismissed their arguments, however. “I do not see any point to this resolution other than as a fishing expedition for political purposes,” he said. A similar investigation in the House Intelligence Committee also appears to have collapsed, with chairman Republican Devin Nunes under fire over unexplained White House briefings about material not shared with the committee. The situation is different in the Senate Intelligence Committee, where on Wednesday the Republican chairman pledged a fair and thorough investigation into the administration’s alleged collusion with Russian intelligence.

Latest Rikers Island Brutality Case Fuels Debate Over Jail’s Future By Tom Hays Associated Press
The latest in a string of brutality cases against Rikers Island guards has added fuel to a growing debate on whether New York City’s notoriously violent jail complex has become so dysfunctional it should be shut down. At least 35 staff members at Rikers have faced criminal charges in the past three years, including 13 for assault or attempted assault. Federal prosecutors have also charged more than a half dozen Rikers guards with violating
inmates’ civil rights through excessive force, smuggling drugs and other charges since 2014. “Rikers Island is one of these long-term injustices and abuses that every New Yorker should be outraged about,” said New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. “The situation is intolerable.” Inmate activists have for more than a year argued that shutting down the sprawling, 10-jail complex on the East River is the only solution for a cycle of abuses that include violence by guards and gang members, mistreatment of the mentally ill and juveniles and unjustly long detention for minor offenders. “If you are a New Yorker who cares about the soul of the criminal justice system, you know that Rikers is the belly of the beast,” said
Constance Malcolm, the mother of Ramarley Graham, an unarmed black teenager shot and killed by a New York City police officer, holds a news conference Monday, March 27, in front of police headquarters to respond to the news that the officer who pulled the AP Photo/Richard Drew trigger quit rather than be fired, in Manhattan.
Glenn Martin, founder of the nonprofit group JustLeadershipUSA, which seeks to decrease the number of Americans behind bars. Among the other arguments for closing Rikers is that the island facility near La Guardia Airport — accessible only by a narrow bridge — is too isolated, cutting off inmates from the outside world in a way that hinders oversight and rehabilitation. Daily populations at Rikers have recently been falling below the 15,000 capacity listed on a city website — averaging less than 10,000 — a trend city officials attribute to reducing detention for those charged with misdemeanor drug possession. Advocates say that makes it viable to dismantle Rikers and replace it with a combination of new and expanded existing jails in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. Cost estimates have reached as high as $10 billion. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has stuck to his position that reforms and improvements at Rikers are both the least costly and most practical approach. A 2015 settlement of civil litigation over pervasive brutality at Rikers imposed various changes, including the addition of thousands of surveillance cameras, stricter policies on use of force and the appointment of a federal monitor to oversee conditions. Cuomo, who frequently is at odds with fellow Democrat de Blasio, took an indirect jab at
the mayor at a community forum earlier this month, saying his view of the city’s position is that closing Rikers would be “too hard.” “Well you know what, impotence is not a defense for me,” the governor said. “New York City can accomplish anything it wants to, when it wants to. It just needs the political will. It is an outrage in New York City to allow Rikers Island to exist.” The latest brutality case stems from security videotape in a maximum-security shower area that shows guard Rodiny Calypso viciously attacking an unnamed inmate in February 2014, a criminal complaint says. After the pair exchanged words — Calypso claims the inmate spit on him — the guard handcuffed the victim and punched him in the face and the head several times, it says. Calypso, 38, was released on $150,000 bond. His attorney, Joey Jackson, said Tuesday his client looks forward to his chance to address the allegations in court. An independent commission headed by the state’s former chief judge, Jonathan Lippman, is close to announcing recommendations for reforms in the city’s criminal justice system, including whether to shut Rikers for good. The challenge, Lippman has said, is “to imagine a state-of-the-art criminal justice system in New York City that does not rely on a de facto penal colony on the outskirts of town.”

Brooklyn DA Candidate Gatling Talks Bold Leadership at MBBA Event By Rob Abruzzese, Legal Editor Brooklyn PHOENIX
District attorney candidate Patricia Gatling was in Manhattan on Tuesday night where she took part in a panel titled “Black Women Lawyers: Lessons in Leadership,” which was hosted by the Metropolitan Black Bar Association (MBBA) in conjunction with Women’s History Month. The event is part of the MBBA’s pipeline initiative that aims to steer minorities into the legal profession. President Paula Edgar has been particularly troubled by the lack of black and female attorneys as partners in law firms, she said. “We conceptualized this event in response to the low numbers of black women in the legal profession,” said Edgar. “The MBBA aimed for students and fellow attorneys in the legal diversity pipeline to be inspired by black women lawyer leaders, and to shine a spotlight on the valuable contributions of Black women in the legal profession.” The panel included Gatling, Michele Coleman Mayes, Taa Grays, Erica EdwardsO’Neal and LaTanya Langley. Each offered a different perspective on the theme and shared how their personal experiences shaped their careers. Gatling shared the story of Fannie Lou Hamer and Mississippi’s Freedom Summer of 1964. She said those situations have shaped her own life and decision to run to be the first black female district attorney in Brooklyn. “Fannie Lou Hamer was a bold leader willing to take on difficult and challenging goals,” Gatling said. Gatling explained how in Mississippi, despite technically having the right to vote, many blacks did not in fear of retribution, or even death. She discussed her grandfather, a cotton farmer who owned his own farm for more than 30 years, but never attempted to register because he lived 45 miles from a town where three civil rights workers were murdered.
“Fannie Lou Hamer’s job in Mississippi was to organize throughout the South so that blacks could vote,” Gatling said. “At the time, about 7 percent of the black population was registered to vote. She was instrumental in the ‘Freedom Summer,’ working with SNCC [Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee], registering over 66 percent of blacks in Mississippi.” Thanks in part to the work done by Hamer, Gatling’s grandfather would eventually feel comfortable enough to vote. He couldn’t read very well, but that didn’t stop him. He brought his granddaughter Patricia with him to help him in the booth the first time he went. “He wanted me to read the ballot so that he could be sure that he was voting for the right person,” Gatling explained. “What I’m saying is hands that picked cotton could now pick legislators.” Gatling then spoke about prosecutors across the country. There are roughly 2,300, and of those, 95 percent are elected, she said. Of those elected prosecutors, just 21 percent are minorities and only 1 percent are women of color. Fourteen states have no elected prosecutors of color at all, Gatling explained. “In December of 2016, I took the bold step of deciding to run for DA of Kings County,” Gatling said. “It’s an enormous undertaking to say the least. I’m running because, like Fannie, I believe that bold leadership can bring about great change. I’ve witnessed this fact in my life. “Like Fannie, I question America and a system of justice that is fraught with inequities and lacks fundamental fairness,” she continued. “A system of justice that criminalizes the poor, addicted and confused and disillusioned. Like Fannie, I’m running to legitimize the system and I believe in America and I believe that we can change.” Gatling is currently an attorney at Windels, Marx, Lane & Mittendorf. She is the longestserving Human Rights commissioner in New York City history, having held the position from 2002 until 2015. She worked as an assistant district attorney with the Kings County DA’s Office from 1990 until February 2002, where she worked her way up to first assistant district attorney under Charles Hynes.
Patricia Gatling declared that she is running for district attorney in Brooklyn back in December. She hopes to become the first female black DA in the borough.

Bridge Project Hosting Interfaith Unity Seder By Paula Katinas Brooklyn PHOENIX
In an effort to celebrate Passover and unite the different religions and cultures of Brooklyn, a nonprofit organization is hosting a Seder-type of dinner event on Sunday. The Bridge Multicultural Advocacy Project will hold what leaders are calling an Interfaith Unity Seder on Sunday April 2, at its flagship location at 1894 Flatbush Ave., from 5 to 9 p.m. The seder portion of the program starts at 6 p.m. The guest speaker will be Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, executive vice president of the New York Board of Rabbis. In addition to enjoying free international gourmet foods, guests will also hear live music by Zach Fredman and the Epichorus Band. Passover, the Jewish holiday that commemorates the liberation of Jews from Egyptian slavery, begins at sundown on April 10. Several elected officials from around the borough have invited to The Bridge’s Seder event, including Public Advocate Letitia James, U.S. Rep. Yvette D. Clarke, Acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, Councilmembers Jumaane D. Williams and Mathieu Eugene, Assemblymembers Dov Hikind and Rodneyse Bichotte and state Sens. Jesse Hamilton and
The Brooklyn Legal Pipeline Initiative, a program that tries to diversify the legal profession, continued at the Brooklyn Bar Association last Monday during which it brought in two faculty members of local law schools and one recent graduate to talk about getting accepted and paying for law school. The two hour class was the second part of a six-part program. On Monday, students were advised on course selection as well as time management and writing skills. They were also given pointers on the LSAT. “It’s important for students of color who, in my experience, tend not to know about these sort of things because they don’t have lawyers in their family,” said Paula Edgar, president of the Metropolitan Black Bar Association, who hosts the classes. “It gives us an opportunity to give them details from someone who is a dean of a law school explaining the do’s and don’ts,” Edgar said. “We also had a recent graduate, someone who is closer to their age who they can relate to better, talk about their experience.” Eulas G. Boyd Jr., the dean of admissions at Brooklyn Law School (BLS), and Dr. Angela M. Joseph, director of financial aid at CUNY School of Law, were the faculty members in attendance. Vanessa Domenichelli a recent BLS graduate who currently works as a NYC Assistant Corporation Counsel, gave her experience from a student’s perspective. “Law school can be very scary,” Domenichelli said. “I am a firm believer that you need a mentor at every-level.”

Kevin Parker. “The Interfaith Unity Seder will host diverse religious leaders, dignitaries and representatives of all faiths united at one table. The evening will include official greetings and teachings from the Passover Seder, focusing on the theme of peace. We are excited to unite New Yorkers as we celebrate Passover, Easter, Ramadan and all faiths as we unite through hope,” Mark Meyer Appel, founder of The Bridge, said in a statement. Abu Khaliquzzaman, president of the Interfaith Dialogue Project Peace Heals, said the seder event will help bridge different cultures. “It is an honor to be part of this community Interfaith Seder. Our focus and passion is to bring people together, people of different faiths and cultures to share experiences and grow in friendship. We are delighted to partner with The Bridge MCP on this endeavor,” Khaliquzzaman stated. The Bridge Multicultural Advocacy Project was established 20 years ago to advocate for social change. DUMBO’s La Catrina Flower Studio Is in Full Bloom ‘Not Your Ordinary’ Flower Shop Has Unique Arrangements for All Occasions By John Alexander INBrooklyn
If you visit DUMBO’s beautiful historic neighborhood, you will discover a hidden gem — La Catrina Flower Studio, located at 140-b Plymouth St. According to founder and creative director Magdalena Levy, “It’s a studio [not just a shop] because besides being open for walk-ins and taking phone orders for pick-up and delivery, we also offer floral classes. Just last week we had a terrarium class — refreshments and wine included — and it was great fun. People get chatty and seem to enjoy the creative process. We also offer floral projects/classes for private events and parties.” At La Catrina, they carefully select an inventory of seasonal,
domestic and imported fresh flowers and foliage. Levy is especially looking forward to the upcoming wedding season, as the events start to line up. She says, “We work with all budgets and can create everything from a centerpiece to full event design.” Levy has had a lifelong passion for creative and artistic pursuits. She found floral design to be a perfect fit for her talents. After leaving a career in television to focus on being a full-time mother, she continued to channel her creative energy into various projects in a volunteer capacity, but it was her love of flowers that drew her back to the professional world. “I love the fact that we already have a happy client base, we do weekly home and lobby decor. People come back and tell us that the flowers lasted a long time. People also like our designs when ordering arrangements and they trust our style and taste,” Levy notes. After completing a program at the renowned Flower School of New York, Levy went on to train with both an established florist and a high-end event producer. In 2016, Levy brought her creative vision to the art-centric DUMBO neighborhood when she opened La Catrina Flower Studio. She proudly explains that she is actively involved in the entire flower selection process, adding, “I personally go to the flower market at least four times a week to pick the flowers, branches and foliage that offer customers a good variety in color and texture. Being in a tiny nook in DUMBO, we pride ourselves on maintaining a wide array of flowers. Besides the typical flowers like roses, lilies and tulips, I specifically like to choose flowers and elements that are long-lasting, rare or extraordinary, such as craspedia, cabbage, pincushion, thistle, brunia, water lilies, leucadendron, etc. Our flowers will never be ordinary.” Levy is glad to be a part of the DUMBO community, where she has lived for 13 years. She explains, “Being in Brooklyn, I wanted a place that reflected this awesome borough! We are hip and chic with a touch of Mexican spice. I’m from Durango, Mexico. I spent half my life in Durango and the other half — up to now, knock on wood — here in NYC. I wanted a flower store that reflected both places.” It’s safe to say that there is no other place quite like La Catrina. All of its floral designs are made with great attention to detail and Levy is happy to fulfill all orders based on the customer’s specifications. Levy adds, “On one particular occa-
La Catrina Flower Studio founder and creative director Magdalena Levy INBrooklyn photos by Will Hasty sion, a customer requested a floral arrangement that was out of this world and we delivered it! The girl who received was thrilled!” By the way, the name La Catrina refers to Mexico’s Grande Dame of death and, as Levy explains, “The elegant, happy skeletal lady with flowers all around her is a Mexican icon that celebrates life and death. Flowers go through the cycle much faster, but in life they offer great beauty and happiness.”

Jackie Robinson’s East Flatbush Home Sold for Nearly $1 Million By Lore Croghan INBrooklyn
Jackie Robinson’s East Flatbush house is now a MillionDollar Baby. Almost. The house where Robinson, who famously broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball, lived in the late 1940s sold for nearly $1 million this past January. The exact price of the semiattached house at 5224 Tilden Ave. was $900,000, and the purchaser was Kimberly Mosley, city Finance Department records indicate. The seller was Hodaya Group LLC with Tommer Oscer as member, Finance Department records show. It was the second time in less than a year that the former home of the Brooklyn Dodgers superstar changed hands. According to Finance Department records, Hodaya Group LLC had paid $421,000 for the house in May 2016. On that occasion, the seller was the estate of Eleanor Palin. The other day, we made a pilgrimage to the handsome two-story house, where the late, great Robinson and his wife Rachel had lived on the top floor.

We went because we were seized with serious nostalgia for the days when Brooklyn had a Major League Baseball team to call its own.
Landmark This House, Please Robinson is one of the best things that ever happened to baseball. And there aren’t a lot of places in Brooklyn, other than the house in East Flatbush, where you can go to honor his memory. The Tilden Avenue property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Legions of preservation-minded Brooklynites and lifelong Dodgers fans feel it should be designated as a city landmark, too. The city Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) decided in 2013 not to consider the redbrick East Flatbush house for designation. Robinson had reportedly lived there for only one year, from 1948 to 1949. The preservation agency’s reasoning was that this wasn’t a long enough time period to make the house eligible for landmarking. In 2014, City Councilmember Jumaane Williams (D-East Flatbush, Flatbush, Flatlands and Midwood) said National Historic Landmarks Program records indicate that Robinson had moved into 5224 Tilden Ave. in 1947 — meaning his residency in the East Flatbush house was longer than the LPC had believed. Pieter Claesen Wyckoff House in East Flatbush Is Oldest Building in NYS By Lore Croghan INBrooklyn
turies. “Wyckoff House’s archeological value would be greatly reduced if it were removed from its original foundations which are essential for confirming its architectural significance,” the report says.

Put this East Flatbush home on your list of must-visit sites this spring: Pieter Claesen Wyckoff House, the oldest building in New York state. Luckily for preservation-minded Brooklynites, there’s public access to the oh-so-old farmhouse, which was partly constructed during Dutch Colonial days. And luckily, Wyckoff House Museum, as it’s called, is situated in a city park. The gates of Fidler-Wyckoff House Park are open on most weekdays. So it’s possible to get an up-close look at the exterior of the venerable farmhouse at 5816 Clarendon Road even when the interior is closed. See wyckoffmuseum.org for dates and times of public tours inside Wyckoff House Museum and family-friendly events such as an Easter Egg hunt scheduled for April 15. The other day, we visited baseball great Jackie Robinson’s house at 5224 Tilden Ave. in East Flatbush. See related story. While we were in the neighborhood, of course we walked several blocks further to see Pieter Claesen Wyckoff House as well. The farmhouse is one of our favorite places in Brooklyn, because of the miracle of its continued existence after three and a half centuries. Another reason it’s dear to our heart is that it was the very first building the city Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) designated as an individual landmark after the agency was created in 1965. The LPC’s designation report written that year says the onestory wooden farmhouse that constitutes the western end of the property was built before 1641, and “is an example of the Flemish Medieval Survival and the Dutch Colonial styles of architecture.” Interestingly, the report says that at a public hearing prior to
the designation, a Department of Highways rep asked that Pieter Claesen Wyckoff House be moved so Ditmas Avenue could be extended through its site. The newly created Landmarks Preservation Commission defended the historic farmhouse from this threat and left it standing right where it had been for cen-
When warm weather arrives in earnest, East Flatbush’s Wyckoff House Museum will be a fun place to visit.

Continued from page 7INB Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is one of many other Brooklyn politicians who also believe that Number 42’s Tilden Avenue home should be granted individual city landmark status.
Ebbets Field Is Gone, And So Is Branch Rickey’s Office The LPC designated Addisleigh Park, Queens, where Robinson later lived, as a historic district. Thanks to its location in that historic district, the baseball great’s house there is now a protected landmark. It cannot be demolished, nor can its exterior be altered, without the Landmarks Preservation Commission’s permission. We have visited Robinson’s Addisleigh Park home. We love Robinson’s Addisleigh Park home. The whole neighborhood is beautiful, a piece of living history. But landmarking shouldn’t be an either/or proposition. Surely there’s room for two landmarked Jackie Robinson homes in this
city of 3 million households. Landmarking the Tilden Avenue house where he lived would be an especially fitting tribute when you consider that other Brooklyn buildings which were important to his historic baseball career are gone, gone, gone. This is obvious, but we’re going to say it anyway: Ebbets Field, where he played, was torn down after the Dodgers left us in the late 1950s and headed to California. The ballpark was at 55 Sullivan Place in Crown Heights South. Ebbets Field Apartments now stand on that site. And in Brooklyn Heights, the building at 215 Montague St. where Branch Rickey’s office was located also fell victim to the wrecking ball a long time ago. That’s where the Dodgers’ president and general manager and Robinson signed the contract that made Robinson the first African-American player in Major League Baseball. The commercial building that now stands on that site has a different address — 205 Montague St.

You folks in Brooklyn Heights probably think Remsen Street is the only Brooklyn road named after the Dutch family that was among the early settlers of our borough.
But in East Flatbush, a few blocks beyond Kings County Hospital, there’s a big, busy thoroughfare called Remsen Avenue. It originates at an intersection where Empire Boulevard, Utica Avenue and East New York Avenue can also be found, and runs southeast to Canarsie. The avenue runs through a section of East Flatbush that’s called Remsen Village. “The Neighborhoods of Brooklyn,” the ever-helpful book edited by Kenneth T. Jackson and John B. Manbeck, says that the brick attached and semi-attached houses in Remsen Village were constructed in the early 20th century. Remsen Village is adjacent to the section of East Flatbush where Brooklyn Dodgers great Jackie Robinson’s late 1940s home, 5224 Tilden Ave., is located. History buffs and long-time residents call Robinson’s old neighborhood Rugby. Continued on page 10INB

Easter egg-hued houses on East 55th Street in the Rugby section of East Flatbush. Continued from page 9INB During a recent pilgrimage to Robinson’s landmark-worthy house — see related story — we walked up and down many Rugby and Remsen Village blocks. Houses and apartment buildings in both mini-neighborhoods are charming in subtle ways, and were interesting to look at even on an unseasonably cold March day. A grand old house at 8807 Avenue B in Remsen Village was one of our especial
favorites. The Engine Company 310-Ladder Company 174 firehouse at 5105 Snyder Ave. in Rugby also caught our eye. The dignified red-brick structure was built in 1927, when James J. Walker was New York City’s Mayor and John J. Dorman its Fire Commissioner, a plaque on the building notes. See brooklyneagle.com for additional photos we snapped in East Flatbush.
