G U EST E D I TO R I A L Labor Day 2037: Expect the Unexpected By Danny Tyree Cagle Cartoons

Will Labor Day be recognizable in another 20 years? Certainly, changes in culture, politics and technology will affect the love-hate relationship between capital and labor. Dizzying changes await this holiday. Yes, a holiday which honors the working people of the nation and grants them time to grill burgers and commemorate gains in workplace health and safety — while waiting to watch NFL players dutifully knock each other’s brains out. By 2037, many current occupations will have disappeared; but hundreds of jobs we haven’t even dreamed of will take their place. (“Dibs! I call dibs!” shouts workaholic Steve Harvey.) There will still be lots of opportunities for safari guides. There will always be a demand for someone to help track down increasingly scarce things such as tigers and rhinos. (“Look. Don’t even step on a twig. It’s a nearly extinct company-paid pension! I want that bad boy hanging above my mantel, next to employer-funded health care.”) The lucky few may even be able to double down on the sort of benefits that the Europeans are always boasting about. At socially progressive companies, I wouldn’t be surprised if paid maternity leave is expanded to cover flying across the country to a karaoke bar to sing, “Baby, baby, where did our love go?” Right now, the “$15-an-hour living wage” campaign is making headlines, but that concept may be made moot not only by inflation but by the coming Zombie Apocalypse. Yes, workers may soon be shambling down the street demanding a “walking dead” wage. (“Brains! More brains! We can’t survive on THIS guy’s brains! He invested in gold instead of Confederate memorabilia way back when.”) Retailers will keep advertising Labor Day sales earlier and earlier. If you don’t leave Santa milk, cookies AND next year’s Labor Day fliers, you’re getting coal in your stocking. (Whether the coal is mined by an Appalachian guy named Sam or C-3PO is still up in the air.) I’m sure some people will still abuse the social safety net, but at least lawyers’ algorithms will have churned out some new strategies. (“This poor man deserves to receive TWO disability checks! He has a rare injury in which a pinched nerve forces him to chop firewood and rappel down cliffs all day long!”) In 2037, will ethicists have given up on preventing employers from using gene editing technology to produce exactly the sort of workers they desire? (“All I did was play Candy Crush at work and suddenly I’m covered with leprosy! AIEEEEE!”)

Will union organizers be able to make much headway when most jobs are handled by robots and artificial intelligence? (“It’s really in your best interests to sign up. I’d hate for anything to happen to your…your…what do you even call those thingamajigs? I’m too flesh-and-blood for this!”) Budget cutbacks and loosening of civil service protections will have gotten rid of many government employees, but those who survive may become creatively cocky. (“I’m not changing the bedpan of this veteran of the War Against the Hundred

Acre Wood unless you let me borrow the nuclear codes over the weekend.”) The passing of Jerry Lewis makes me wonder if someone might even revive the MDA Labor Day Telethon someday. Music, Food and Fun at Canarsie Family Love Festival By John Alexander Brooklyn PHOENIX

On a beautiful, warm Saturday afternoon, Canarsie Park was filled with families enjoying a day of food, fun and music at the Canarsie Love Festival. The event was organized by Debbie Tiamfook of the Foresee Community Outreach Center and her niece, Tunisha Walker, as part of Canarsie Strong, a neighborhood-based activist group. Canarsie Strong was a grassroots project formed in response to what Tiamfook called “sketchy and disrespectful homeowner assistance” from government agencies and certain charitable providers. According to Tiamfook, “Foreclosures were rising, unemployment was up, and relief was scant, so Canarsie Strong asked the banks to suspend foreclosure action and to waive mortgages for one year without penalty.” In 2013 the group asked for assistance for homeowners and expanded their assistance program to include mold removal treatment and construction repair help for both homeowners and businesses. Tiamfook and Walker formed the Canarsie Strong project to address the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy to the South Brooklyn coastal communities, including Canarsie.

The Canarsie Family Love Festival brought out many Canarsie Strong supporters, including State Sen. Roxanne Persaud, Kings County Democratic Chairman Frank Seddio, Executive Director of Millennium Development Paul Curiale, Gardy Brazela, president of the 69th Precinct Community Council, My Time co-founder Lucina Clarke, community

leaders Joy Riley, Ira Kluger, John D’Arpa and other civic leaders. “It was a beautiful day to be outside in a wonderful park in Canarsie with both young and old enjoying a day of music, valuable information and having the opportunity to meet new leaders and make new friends who share so many positive ideas for a stronger community,” said Curiale.

There were information booths sponsored by the Brooklyn Public Library and Healthfirst Insurance among others. Parishioners from local churches attended as well as well as members of the Girl Scouts. The event also featured a streel drum band, a variety of barbecue favorites and games geared towards younger children.

City Hall Announces Major Revamp of J’Ouvert Celebration Continued from page 1 “Last year, as everyone knows,” de Blasio began, “we attempted a series of major changes and a tremendous amount more police presence and additional resources, and yet we did not get the result we sought. Lives were lost and that’s unacceptable to all of us,” he concluded, speaking about the shooting deaths in 2016 of Tiarah Poyou and Tyreke Borel. NYPD planning for the 2016 J’Ouvert, which constituted former Commissioner Bill Bratton’s last year heading the department, had been ambitious, bringing more officers and better street lighting onto Flatbush Avenue. But it left the early-dawn celebration itself untouched. This year will be different. “We’re going to have a very different plan for the J’Ouvert celebration this year,” de Blasio announced. “In fact, you’re going to see the same kind of measures we take on New Year’s Eve to create a much more controlled and orderly situation.” Officials went on to outline several profound structural changes to the 2017 J’Ouvert, including a specific start time of 6 a.m. — in contrast to the more casual tradition of people gathering around 3 a.m. — restricted entrances to Grand Army Plaza that will require celebrants to pass through metal detectors to screen for weapons and relinquish any drugs or alcoholic beverages. Bags and backpacks will not be permitted. NYPD Chief of Patrol Terence Monahan outlined further specifics: “What we’re going to be doing is shutting down, similar to Times Square, Empire from Flatbush down to Nostrand, Nostrand from Empire to Midwood. This is going to be a frozen zone. There will be 12 different entry points. They’re located on the map up on the screen, and over here people will be able to come through these entry points — you’ll go past the magnetometer. You’re not going to be able to carry any large bags in, similar to Times Square.” “This isn’t just about the NYPD deciding what we’re going to have to do about J’Ouvert, this is the community coming together and collaborating,” added O’Neill. As he did on the morning after the 2016 J’Ouvert, de Blasio expressed optimism that despite the problems associated with it, J’Ouvert would follow the examples set by the Puerto Rico and St. Patrick’s Day parades, which had also experienced violence and hooliganism in the past: “NYPD over the years fundamentally changed each of those situations. Nothing is perfect, but they are very, very different than they were say 20 or 30 years ago,” he said.

Williams, whose District 45 includes the J’Ouvert route, emphasized: “You cannot cancel J’Ouvert … It is not just a parade; it’s a cultural event.” Although Williams has publicly disagreed with the mayor and commissioner about how much progress NYPD has been made toward accountability and transparency, his support for the city’s modified J’Ouvert was unequivocal: “The community is not blasé. They’re highly motivated to prevent recurrence,” he said. Also present, and credited with having substantial input into planning the new J’Ouvert, was Yvette Rennie, president of J’Ouvert City International, which has organized J’Ouvert since 1984. “If we’re to keep our culture alive, this year must be different,” Rennie insisted. “This holiday is not going away,” de Blasio agreed, alluding to suggestions made from some quarters in the wake of the 2016 J’Ouvert that the event simply be canceled. Given J’Ouvert’s origin as a secret, unsanctioned celebration held in the small hours of the morning by slaves who risked punishment from their masters should they be discovered, City Hall’s decision to recreate the celebration in the form of its unequivocally successful New Year’s Eve in Times Square seems fair and sensible, especially when the alternative would likely entail authorities chasing down “guerrilla J’Ouverts” in neighborhoods from Prospect Heights to East Flatbush.
