President Trump and Puerto Rico Every president takes office in the White House with the premise of deep respect for the importance of serving the citizens and people of America, but this president, Donald Trump, is failing to do justice for all. In the midst of what the governor of Puerto Rico has said is a crisis of epic proportions, President Trump stayed silent until he broke his silence to mention about Puerto Rico’s debt and broken infrastructure. He blames the insufficient help given to Puerto Rico on the fact that it is an island. Whether or not President Trump wants to admit it, he is losing ground on making America great again by dividing citizens in his speeches and actions. United for Puerto Rico is an imitative started by the first lady of Puerto Rico, Beatriz Rosello, in collaboration with the private sector with the purpose of providing aid and support to those affected in Puerto Rico by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Puerto Rico will soon benefit from an all-star lineup. Stars like rapper Pitbull, who sent his private plane to Puerto Rico to transport cancer patients so they could receive medical treatment in America, are helping out. Puerto Rican Congresswoman Jenniffer Gonzalez-Colon thanked the rapper. The Cuban-American owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban, loaned the team plane to point guard J.J. Barea, a native of Puerto Rico, to deliver much-needed supplies to the island. Jennifer Lopez announced that she is donating $1 million to aid the people of Puerto Rico. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said on Monday that medical evacuations were underway and work was being done to restore power to hospitals, but on same day Gov. Ricardo Rossello begged Congress for

Puerto Rico is an island of 3.4 million American citizens that has been plunged into darkness for the foreseeable future, but it wasn’t until Tuesday, six days after Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, that Trump made a substantive late disaster statement about Puerto Rico during a press conference on the lawn of the White House. President Trump also tweeted just before Maria hit Puerto Rico, saying, “Puerto Rico being hit hard by new monster Hurricane. Be careful, our hearts are with you — will be there to help.” President Trump finally made a statement about visiting Puerto Rico. The president said he will be visiting the island on Tuesday, Oct. 8. He was focused on Twitter, being bombastic about the NFL. If the media didn’t publicize the importance of the help needed in Puerto Rico, most likely the president would have forgotten that Puerto Rico is a dependency of the United States. The people of Puerto Rico are U.S. citizens, and the island is a U.S. territory. But it is has not yet been incorporated into the U.S. In 2012, voters in Puerto Rico rejected the status quo and requested that the United States consider establishing Puerto Rico as the 51st state. President Trump must be saying that an island in the Caribbean is not the responsibility of the United States. He also brings up the fact that they are deeply in debt. The president knows all about being in debt, and that is why he seems not to want any part of the devastation after Hurricane Maria.

“the full support of the U.S. government” in the face of a humanitarian disaster involving 3.4 million U.S. citizens The president should show unity. Even Puerto Rico has people who served in the military, and it is a shame they are being disrespected by the president of the United States of America. —Terrence Lyght, Publisher, Brooklyn PHOENIX

Action, Not Just Tough Talk, Needed on Venezuela President Donald Trump, speaking at his first appearance at the United Nations, said the following about Venezuela: We have imposed tough and calibrated sanctions on the country of Venezuela, which has brought a once-thriving nation to the brink of total collapse; the socialist dictatorship of Nicolas Maduro has inflicted terrible pain and suffering on the people of that country; this corrupt regime destroyed a prosperous nation by imposing a failed ideology that has produced poverty and misery everywhere it has been tried to make matters better; Maduro has taken away power from elected representatives to preserve his rule; the Venezuelan people are starving; their democratic institutions are being destroyed, this situation is completely unacceptable; and we must help them regain their freedom. Trump said specifically, “The United States has taken important steps to hold the regime accountable. We are prepared to take further actions if the government of Venezuela persists on its path to impose a totalitarian rule on people. We are fortunate to have incredible strong and healthy trade relations with many of the Latin American countries gathered here today, our economic bond forms a critical foundation

for advancing peace and prosperity for all of our people and all our neighbors. I ask every country represented here today to be prepared to do more to address this very real crisis. “We call for full restoration of democracy and political freedom in Venezuela. “The problem in Venezuela is not that socialism has been poorly implemented but that socialism has been faithfully implemented. “From the Soviet Union to Cuba to Venezuela, wherever true socialism or communism has been adopted it, has delivered anguish and devastation. Those who preach the tenets of these desecrated ideologies only contribute to the continuous suffering of the people who live under these cruel system. “America stands with every person living under a cruel regime. Our respect for sovereignty is a call for action.” What type of country is Venezuela? Venezuela became the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela after the 1999 constitution, which renamed the country in honor of Simon Bolivar. The constitution was promulgated by President Hugo Chavez, who serve from 1999 to 2013. It extended the

presidential term from five to six years. Chavez’s presidency was interrupted shortly in 2002 by a failed coup attempt that put Pedro Carmona in office for a day. In 2009, a constitutional referendum approved the elimination of term limits, which meant that Chavez could be elected again. When the popular Chavez died in 2013, he was succeeded by Vice President Nicolas Maduro, who was elected the following month. Under Maduro, Venezuela has seen a rise in unemployment, shortages of goods, closures of several corporations and a decline in productivity. He has been criticized for what opponents consider backsliding the country toward an authoritarian regime. This year, a Constituent Assembly was created to rewrite the 1999 constitution. This, in turn, has sparked protests over concerns that Maduro would eliminate Venezuela’s democratic institutions. The longer it takes Trump to begin to work with his South American neighbors instead of just complaining, the more people will die in Venezuela.. —Terrence Lyght, Publisher, Brooklyn PHOENIX

Brooklyn Lawmakers Named MIT Community Fellows

In a nod to their work to empower economically marginalized neighborhoods, eight Brooklyn lawmakers are among a group of elected officials from New York City selected by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to become named King Community Fellows for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Yorman Nunez, the manager of the Community Innovators Lab program, said the goal of the project is to “build a learning community among leaders and innovators in the Bronx and Brooklyn, two boroughs facing economic challenges that have formidable assets that can support a fair and equitable local economy.” The elected officials were selected because of their achievements and pursuits in the fields of social justice and innovation. The Community Innovators Lab is a center for planning and development within the MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning. The CoLab, as it is

Kevin Parker (left to right) Photo courtesy of Diana Richardson’s office The honorees will be part of the MIT Community Innovators Lab Program, is a 12-month project that will allow them to work on models for community and economic planning that have sustainability and inclusive development in economically marginalized urban communities.

“I am excited to participate in this program to explore ways to learn about comprehensive methods of economic sustainability and equity initiatives which can help to improve the state of our current community in the 43rd Assembly District and bring equitable policies to the state of New York,” she said in a statement.

The group of fellows includes state Sen. Kevin Parker; Assemblymembers Diana C. Richardson, Latrice Walker, Rodneyse Bichotte, Tremaine Wright and Walter Mosely; and City Councilmembers Rafael Espinal and Robert Cornegy.

Members of this year’s class of fellows have already been able to participate in meetings facilitated by MIT that incorporated field-based learning methods.

Richardson (D-Crown HeightsProspect Lefferts Gardens) said the fellowship will help her represent her constituents better.

In addition to the elected officials from Brooklyn, lawmakers from the Bronx were selected to take part in the program including state Sen. Jamaal Bailey, Assemblymember Marcus Crespo and Councilmembers Vanessa Gibson, Rafael Salamanca and Ritchie Torres.

known, supports the development and use of knowledge from excluded communities to deepen civic engagement, improve community practice, inform policy, mobilize community assets and generate shared wealth. The King Community Fellows Program is named in honor of Mel King, a longtime community organizer in the Boston area and a past adjunct professor at MIT. Since it was launched in 2011, King Community Fellows Program has recognized more than 50 leaders who have demonstrated a commitment to social justice. The 12-month program also includes an official MIT academic appointment for each participating leader.

Professors Stacy Caplow, Maryellen Fullerton, Susan Hazeldean and Dan Smulian led the discussion with the student, who is currently in her second year, and whose name is being withheld for her protection. While the professors discussed aspects of the law, it was the student’s story that grabbed the attention of everyone at the meeting. “It wasn’t until my sophomore year [at Brooklyn Technical High School] that my status began to affect me, because that’s when I had to start internships to be able to get into college,” the second-year BLS student, and current DACA recipient, said. “I worked at Mount Sinai, but I couldn’t get paid because I had no Social Security number. It was around that time that it hit me that there was no chance of going to college and getting a scholarship.” It didn’t matter that this student was a member of the student government at Brooklyn Tech, was active in many social clubs and had successfully passed advanced placement (AP) chemistry, AP biology and AP calculus. She was unable to get loans and was only able to enroll at Brooklyn College with the help of family members and two jobs. “I remember thinking, ‘I’m stuck,’” she said. “Then when Obama announced DACA, suddenly there were opportunities that I didn’t have before.” As soon as DACA was announced, she helped her sister and brother apply. That’s when she also began to prepare for law school. “Obama introduced Deferred Action, and I thought it had to be a joke. But it ended up being a turning point for us,” the BLS student said. “I helped my sister, my brother. There were people in the community that I was able to help.” There are approximately 800,000 people currently enrolled in DACA, which grants recipients two years to stay in the country before they have to reapply. Recipients who can renew before March 5, 2018 should be granted another two-year stay, but those who cannot reapply by that time will lose their DACA status, according to the current procedure. There are roughly 20 states currently suing on behalf of their resident DACA recipients. The University of California, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the city of San Jose and six students have also brought lawsuits against the federal government. There are currently two lawsuits being held in Brooklyn in front of U.S. District Court Judge Nicholas Garaufis brought by various groups, including Make the Road and the National Immigration Law Center. NAACP is making a race discrimination claim, and others are making equal protection claims based on national origin and the fact that 78 percent of DACA recipients are of Mexican origin. The other big claims are due process claims, which is what most of the students are making. “The due process claims — one is that it is fundamentally unfair to take this information from people and then use it against them,” Fullerton said. “Another due process claim is that there wasn’t enough notice for an opportunity to be heard before the decision memo was issued.” Other parties are making the claim that “it was an arbitrary and capricious decision and that there wasn’t notice of kind given under the terms of the Administrative Procedure Act,” Fullerton explained. “These suits have all been filed within the last two weeks.” Hazeldean laid out what DACA recipients can do, like consulting an immigration attorney to check for other paths to citizenship, but suggested that many will be forced to stay within the country illegally. BLS has provided and will continue to provide opportunities to volunteer and work for its students to get involved. Friday, September 29, 2017 • Brooklyn PHOENIX • 3

The Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert (JALBCA) held its annual courthouse cocktail party at the Appellate Courthouse in Brooklyn Heights on Wednesday, Sept. 13. JALBCA is an organization that began in 1992 and is designed to mobilize members of the legal profession to act on the dangers of breast cancer. The group uses its connections to provide medical, social and legal services to those in need. JALBCA hosts annual programs in support of services like The Family Center and ScanVan. It also funds cancer research, educational programs and family-focused initiatives. Last Wednesday’s event was an informal gathering of members, who were encouraged to invite others from the local legal community to join them for after-work food and drinks. Justice Reinaldo E. Rivera, associate justice, Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department, served as a de facto host for the event. Justice William C. Thompson (ret.) and Justice Marsha Steinhardt also spoke briefly at the event. JALBCA's next event, titled "Outsmarting Cancer: The Hope of Immunotherapy," will be held on Oct. 24 at Simpson, Thacher & Bartlett LLP in Manhattan. That event, which will be moderated by Hon. Melissa A. Crane, will feature panelists Dr. Larry Norton, Dr. Jedd D. Wolchok and Dr. Stephanie L. Goff.

As someone else once said (I love this quote, having cited it previously): “You can’t con people, at least not for long. You can create excitement, you can do wonderful promotion, and get all kinds of press,

and you can throw in a little hyperbole. But if you don’t deliver the goods, people will eventually catch on.” That’s from Trump’s book, “The Art of the Deal.” Now the CEOs have caught on. Copyright 2017 Dick Polman

It’s not often — actually, it’s never happened before — that a Republican president gets dissed and dumped by corporate titans like Dow, Merck, Campbell Soup, the Blackstone Group, 3M, Intel, Ernst & Young, JP Morgan Chase, Johnson & Johnson, General Motors, PepsiCo and IBM. World’s Biggest Street Fair, Tallest Mayor

DESPITE THE RECORD-BREAKING 91-DEGREE WEATHER ON SUNDAY, BROOKLYN’S ATLANTIC ANTIC STILL DREW THOUSANDS TO ITS 43RD ANNUAL CELEBRATION. Art Dissolve Fred Cray's new series of unique “Dissolve” prints present a radical new body of work. Although he continues to adhere to his previous process of transforming photographic imagery through manipulation in this series the resulting images — based in photography — are unique works on paper. When: Tuesday-Saturday through Oct. 7, 11 a.m - 5 p.m. Where: DUMBO/Janet Borden, Inc. (91 Water St.) 10,000 Mantras This is Meg Hitchcock’s third solo exhibition with Studio 10. In her pieces, carefully cut letters and burn marks repeat mantras and other texts through grid formations and subtle patterns. These iterate various liturgical themes: repentance through repetition, selfmortification through cutting and purification with fire and incense. When: Thursday-Sunday, through Oct. 8, 1-6 p.m. Where: Bedford Stuyvesant/Studio 10 (56 Bogart St.) Being Well: In Search of Utopia? A contemporary art exhibit curated by Kathryn Gressel featuring participating artists Zoey Hart, Leslie Kerby, Anthony Heinz May, Carolyn Monastra, Shana Moulton, Carmen Papalia, Shervone Neckles, Jenna Spevack, Tattfoo Tan and Jody Wood.

When: Friday-Sunday, through Oct. 8, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Where: Park Slope/The Old Stone House (336 Third St.) Migration Maura Sheehan brings a flock of balancing birds to create a tableau vivant, or living picture. When: Thursday-Saturday, through Oct. 8, 1-6 p.m. Where: Crown Heights/FiveMyles (558 St. Johns Place) Joan Snitzer’s Chromophore “Chromophore” highlights the developments in Joan Snitzer’s work during the last two years. In these new paintings, Snitzer looks back at the painted subjects of 20th century abstraction to explore how they can function in a contemporary context. When: Wednesday-Sunday, through Oct. 8, 12-6 p.m. Where: DUMBO/A.I.R. Gallery (155 Plymouth St.) The Fire Theory: Ice The Fire Theory presents “Ice,” an exhibition, residency and collaborative project curated by Omar López-Chahoud. Currently, racism and xenophobia limits the immigration that has made this country great, endangers immigrants and makes the path to citizenship inaccessible. I.C.E is the U.S. agency that is responsible for the border control, trade, immigration, deportation programs and, as its name indicates, it generates a situation of freezing, a standby between families and friends on both sides of the border. When: Wednesday-Saturday, through Oct. 13, 2-7 p.m. Where: Park Slope/Open Source Gallery (306 17th St.) Material Matters Innovations in clay, glass, wood and metal. GEMINI — May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, make a concerted and sincere effort to focus on family for the next few days. It’s time to reconnect with everyone in the house, and you will enjoy the time at home. CANCER — Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, slow down a little because moving faster will not get the job done right. It may only lead to sloppy mistakes that will take even more time to handle. LEO — Jul 23/Aug 23 It can be challenging to find initial support for your ideas, Leo. However, once you explain all of the specifics, there’s a good chance others will climb on board. VIRGO — Aug 24/Sept 22 Risk can sometimes have a large payoff, Virgo. Just make sure you time your jump right or you could miss an opportunity to really shine. LIBRA — Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, if you push yourself a little harder this week, you will be happy with the results. Even though it may be an uphill battle, the summit will look pretty nice. SCORPIO — Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, just when you think you can lie low and escape the week without any excitement, something pops up that requires all of your attention. Hunker down for now. SAGITTARIUS — Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, focus on something new for a while rather than a problem that has been bouncing around in your brain. Frustration will get you nowhere, so let it go for now. CAPRICORN — Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, even if you take some time off from work, things will go on as planned. Although you are a key member of the team, others can temporarily fill your shoes. AQUARIUS — Jan 21/Feb 18 Sometimes the things that require the most work are the ones that you enjoy the most, Aquarius. Dig in deep on a new project and the rewards will come afterward. PISCES — Feb 19/Mar 20 A few things still need to be sorted out, Pisces. Then you can put your feet up for the time being. Gemini has something to say this week.

Last Looks at the Watchtower Sign Kushner Cos. Plans to Remove

At night, the light from the Watchtower sign casts a red glow on wet pavement in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Sign on Former Brooklyn Heights HQ of the Jehovah’s Witnesses Is Going, Going, Gone By Lore Croghan Brooklyn Eagle

Oh, that fine red glow. When it's gone, we will miss it so. The red Watchtower sign's days are numbered. The company Jared Kushner headed until he stepped aside to serve as senior adviser to his father-in-law President Donald Trump plans to remove the sign from the former headquarters of the Jehovah's Witnesses in Brooklyn Heights. The sign has been a Brooklyn waterfront icon since the religious group installed it after its 1969 purchase of the buildings at 25- 30 Columbia Heights. The glowing red sign, which also tells the time and temperature, is a beacon to people in Brooklyn Bridge Park, on the Brooklyn Bridge and in Lower Manhattan. The sign it replaced had said “Squibb,” the previous property owner's name. The Watchtower sign was neon until the Jehovah's Witnesses switched over to energysaving LEDs — meaning light-emitting diodes — to illuminate the 15- foot-tall letters in 2009. The Watchtower sign's fans have been anxiously eying it since June, when the city Buildings Department approved an applica-

tion by Kushner Cos. and its joint-venture partners for permission to “remove all individual letters from existing sign” at 25- 30 Columbia Heights. The framework of the sign will remain, the Buildings Department filing indicates. It's not yet known whose name will replace the word “Watchtower.” Because the Watchtower sign could be dismantled at any moment, we've snapped some photos to serve as keepsakes. Night and day, in foul weather and fair, the sign is so fine.

By the way, the joint-venture partners that share ownership of 25- 30 Columbia Heights with Kushner Cos. are CIM Group and LIVWRK. The joint venture is called Columbia Heights Associates. The joint venture's publicists insist that this name be used in stories about the property. The new owners are converting the buildings into a Class-A office development with stores and public space for arts and culture. redeveloped property will be called Panorama. The joint venture purchased the former Watchtower headquarters complex for $340 million in August 2016, city Finance Department records indicate. The sale was part of a yearslong effort by the Jehovah's Witnesses to liquidate their once-vast real estate portfolio in

Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO. The religious group is still in the process of selling off its properties in the two neighborhoods because it has moved its headquarters to the upstate New York town of Warwick. Kushner Cos. and various investment partners have paid the Watchtower around $1 billion for Brooklyn property purchases. They also bought 85 Jay St., a massive parking lot in DUMBO with about 1 million square feet of development rights. And they purchased a cluster of former Bible-printing plants on Adams, Pearl, Prospect and Sands streets in DUMBO that they've transformed into a techie-friendly office complex called Dumbo Heights.
