Brooklyn Kids Teach Parents Importance of Voting Paula Katinas

At the New American Academy Charter School, the kids are teaching their parents a few things. Students at the Canarsie school are happily helping their guardians develop a variety of useful skills, like how to prepare a meal with healthy ingredients and how to register to vote. And the role reversal has the blessing of Headmaster is Lisa Parquette Silva. “We have small group instruction here. The parents are involved,” she told the Brooklyn PHOENIX. Continued on page 5

Are We Doing Enough for Our Loved Ones, When It Comes to Alzheimer’s?
Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative disease of the brain that causes dementia, lack of judgment and ability to function. This disorder usually appears in people older than 65, but less common forms of the disease appear earlier in adulthood. Memory loss is the most common sign of Alzheimer’s disease. Forgetfulness may be subtle at first, but the loss of memory worsens over time until it interferes with most aspects of daily living. Even in familiar settings, a person with Alzheimer’s disease may get lost or become confused. Routine tasks such as preparing meals, doing laundry and performing

other household chores can be challenging. Additionally, it may become difficult to recognize people and name objects. Affected people increasingly require help with dressing, eating, and personal care. As the disorder progresses, some people with Alzheimer’s disease experience personality and behavioral changes and have trouble interacting in a socially appropriate manner. Other common symptoms include agitation, restlessness, withdrawal, and loss of language skills. People with this disease usually require total care during the advanced stages of the disease. Affected individuals usually survive 8 to 10 years after the appearance of symptoms, but the course of the disease can range from 1 to 25 years. Death usually results from pneumonia, malnutrition, or general body wasting. Alzheimer’s disease can be classified as early onset or late onset. The signs and symptoms of the early-onset form appear before age 65, while the late-onset form appears after age 65. The early-onset form is much less common than the late-onset form, which accounts for less than 5 percent of all cases of Alzheimer disease. Dr. Gayatri Devi, neurologist, says, “Basically, 97 percent of patients with mild Alzheimer’s disease don’t even get diagnosed in their internists’ offices, and half of patients with moderate Alzheimer’s don’t get diagnosed. What that means is that the percentage of people that we think about when we think about Alzheimer’s — the people in the nursing home — that’s a very, very small fraction of the entirety of the people who have the condition.” One of the myths Devi debunks is that Alzheimer’s treatment has no effect. “That’s absolutely untrue. I’ve worked in this area for 23 years, treatment does make a difference, patients do benefit from it. It depends on the individual patient,” Devi said.

amily members should start paying more attention to loved ones when looking for care and medication after someone is diagnosed with the mentally challenging illness of Alzheimer’s. People sometimes get frustrated and tend to give up, mainly because of costs and the hours it takes to visit with doctors. But you should reassure yourself it is worth the time and effort we put into getting help for those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Each person reacts differently to the medication.
From the Desk Of the PUBLISHER
Devi also said, in most cases, genetics has little to do with it. “Less than 5 percent of Alzheimer’s cases are from genetics. The majority of Alzheimer’s can be prevented by lifestyle changes. Simple things like diet. Make sure that you’re eating a diet that’s good for your heart. A Mediterranean diet, which is good for your heart, it’s also a good anti-Alzheimer’s diet. Make sure that you are active. Exercise 30 minutes three times a week,” Devi said. “You can prevent up to 60 percent of Alzheimer’s cases.” Controlling risk factors like high blood pressure and diabetes is also important. And while there’s currently no way to reverse Alzheimer’s, Devi said, “we can certainly stop progression.” Like colonoscopies and mammograms, Devi said she thinks everyone over the age of 50 should have “baseline brain evaluations” including “a map of our brain strengths and weaknesses.” That way, “we can actually look back and say, look, it’s about the same as it was 10 years ago, nothing to worry about. But if there’s a problem, we can intervene earlier. The earlier we intervene, the better the response to treatment.” If a doctor does diagnose Alzheimer’s in you or a loved one, Devi advises being careful who you tell about the diagnosis. “Because you don’t want to be stigmatized. And we’re all human beings. We’re social creatures. We’re going to respond to how people treat us,” Devi said. “So if people don’t treat us as competent beings, which is sometimes what happens when they hear the diagnosis Alzheimer’s, you’re going to respond in a more diffident way. So I think it’s important to be careful who to tell and how you tell. Because I’ve had patients get fired from their jobs, and they’re just as good as someone else who doesn’t have the illness and sometimes way better.” Take a little time to make sure that loved ones are seeking help, taking the medication and staying on a strict diet

Rare, Tiny African Feline Now at Prospect Park Zoo Brooklyn JOURNAL
A black-footed cat, Africa’s smallest species of wild feline, is now on exhibit at Wildlife Conservation Society’s Prospect Park Zoo. Also known as small-spotted cats, black-footed cats are native to the arid open savanna and grassland areas of southern Africa. Currently, the zoo has a male on exhibit in the noc-

turnal section of its Hall of Animals. A female will eventually be introduced for breeding as part of the Species Survival Plan (SSP), a cooperative breeding program designed to enhance the genetic viability of animal populations in zoos and aquariums across the U.S. “Our hope is to breed these cats to contribute to the survival of the species while educating our guests about a beautiful yet vulnerable cat species that is unknown to most people,” said Denise McClean, director of the zoo.
The cats are extremely small, only 3-4 pounds, and hunt birds and rodents at night. Their large eyes enable them to see well in the darkness, and their spotted coat provides camouflage against the brush. The species is classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, which estimates that there are fewer than 10,000 mature individuals remaining in nature. The Prospect Park Zoo is located at 450 Flatbush Ave. within Prospect Park. For more information, call (718) 399-7339 or visit prospectparkzoo.com.
Brooklyn Kids Teach Parents Importance of Voting Continued from page 1 The partnership was on full display at the charter school’s recent Curriculum Celebration, an event that gave kids a chance to show what they have learned in class so far this year. As their parents watched in awe, the children presented the results of their work in the school’s H.E.A.R.T.S. (Humility, Empowerment, Aspiration, Responsibility, Teamwork and Scholarship) program. The Curriculum Celebration, which takes place five times a year, is a popular event at the school. The New American Academy Charter School boasts a unique configuration. Instead of grades, it groups youngsters together in cohorts. Each cohort has approximately 65 students. The classroom teachers are referred to as line teachers.
Master teachers are also there to serve as mentors to the line teachers. Located at 9301 Ave. B, the school falls within the boundaries of School District 18. Notably, each grade in the school is named in honor of a prominent African-American in history. Harriet Tubman, Maya Angelou, Nelson Mandela, Thurgood Marshall and Barack Obama are just some of the illustrious people represented. The school gladly accepts nominations for new names from parents. The recent Curriculum Celebration gave master teacher Jenny Tranni and her second graders, known as Team Angelou after poet Maya Angelou, a chance to shine. Their topic: “How to Use Heart to Govern Our Communities.” “It’s about the importance of being active in our commu-
nity, being a participant in the community,” Tranni told the PHOENIX. The mature-beyond-theiryears kids even gave a PowerPoint presentation. “We learned about registering to vote. They had their parents register to vote. They transformed the classroom into a voting site. They gave ‘I Voted’ stickers to their parents,” Tranni said. The fifth graders, known as Team Marshall after the late Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, focused on the topic of healthy foods. “The students investigated how to eat healthy,” master teacher Sheila Osnes told the PHOENIX. The key focus of the project was to foster the communications skills of the students, according to Osnes. “They talked to each other,” she said. The youngsters took the
bull by the horns and wrote to the food service supervisors for School District 18 to find out about food choices and menu preparation. Science also came into play for the project. The kids used testing techniques to determine how much fat and sugar various foods contained. “They taught their parents how to do experiments. They planned healthy menus. We had a pot luck meal. Parents brought dishes,” Osnes said. The delicious pot luck dishes included whole wheat pasta, low-fat mozzarella balls, salads and hummus. As part of the Curriculum Celebration, the school’s students also organized charitable and social awareness campaigns focusing on hurricane relief, Save the Earth, anti-bullying, Stop the Violence and Feed the Hungry.

He was impressed by what he saw at the Curriculum Celebration. “This is an example of what creativity and innovation can do to raise the level of academic achievement of students and motivate them to enjoy their school experience,” he said in a statement. Bright said he was pleased to see students learning about voting and civic engagement. “Kids won’t turn out to vote as adults if civics is foreign to
them,” he said. The New American Academy Charter School opened in September of 2013 with a kindergarten class and a firstgrade class. Part of the school’s mission is “to build a relationship between the teachers, students and families,” Parquette Silva said. The enrollment is done through a lottery system. The school has a support team and uses tools such as emotional learning to encourage children to reach their full potential. The kids learn about computer coding, take part in innovative music programs and regularly discuss how to be leaders in their neighborhoods. “We teach our students to be good citizens,” Parquette Silva told the PHOENIX. “Our students look out for each other. We encourage them to be looking out for No. 2 instead of looking out for No. 1.” For more information on the New American Academy Charter School, visit www.thaacs.org.

He refers to the proud Vietnam veteran as a Brooklyn boy who endured “some of the worst fighting in the war, and came home with a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart and a special gleam in his eye.” That gleam led Ryan to pursue a career working at The New York Times and as a photographer. His works have been displayed in showcases throughout the borough, with titles like “Urban Decay,” “Abandoned New York Prison,” “Snowfall in Wilcox Park,” “Stonington Harbor in Winter” and “Chasing Little

As a result, her family has a long history with the famous Williamsburg annual Giglio Feast, which was first held in 1903 when Italian immigrants held their feast in Brooklyn. Continued on page 4INB

Raffle and gift baskets on display at St. Mary’s Christmas Boutique By John Alexander INBrooklyn
In what’s become a yearly tradition, St. Mary’s Antiochian Church on 81st Street and Ridge Boulevard in Bay Ridge will hold its popular Christmas boutique on Saturday, Dec. 2 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, and what’s different this year is that it will be the first time the event is being held in St. Mary’s newly renovated Couri Hall. According to event organizer Gale Zarr, “St. Mary’s Christmas Boutique is a Bay Ridge community event which celebrates the Christmas season with our neighbors while promoting those wonderful shopkeepers who have been so generous towards the event.” In past years, people have come to from all over Brooklyn to shop for their holiday gifts. And there is always a wide selection to choose from. The boutique features all kinds of vendors who, along with various Christmas items, will be featuring unique gift baskets and one-of-a-kind jewelry designs. Gift items include Regency Christmas ornaments, linens, wreaths, collectibles, antiques, poinsettias, children’s novelties, china, housewares and costume jewelry.

The boutique is also a family destination with Santa’s workshop set up for all the kids to get a chance to meet jolly old St. Nick and have their picture taken with him. There will be a 50/50 raffle. Last year’s winner won over $1,000. There will also be drawings for Christmas gift baskets that contain gift certificates and merchandise donated by local shopkeepers, as well as a basket of cheer and a Sahadi gift basket with delicious treats. Those stopping by will find plenty of food at the event, and the kitchen will serve pizza, hummus, tabouli and spinach pies. The bakery will have homemade desserts including pastries, brownies and cookies. There will also be a café with available seating. Zarr adds, “We encourage everyone to shop for the holidays since our merchandise is very reasonably priced. The boutique features items for gift giving which include Regency Christmas ornaments and decorations, linens, wreaths, poinsettias, children’s novelties, antiques, costume jewelry and much more, all sold by the Ladies Club of St. Mary’s. There will also be vendors selling jewelry, novelties and spices.” All proceeds will help with the maintenance of the newly renovated church hall.

NY Jets Visit Fort Hamilton Army Base NFL Stars Coach Army Game in Bay Ridge By John Alexander INBrooklyn
Three members of the New York Jets spent an entire day at Fort Hamilton Army Base in Bay Ridge. They came to spend time with the troops and coach a football game between two teams of army soldiers. Jets quarterback Josh McCown, linebacker Demario Davis and wide receiver Chad Hansen coached a friendly flag football match on Tuesday at the Fort Hamilton Athletic Field. The Jets donated customized green-and-white team jerseys and official footballs for what they dubbed “Fort Hamilton’s Turkey Bowl.” The Jets stars offered valuable pointers before they were split up into two teams. McCown’s team sported white Jets jerseys, while Davis’s team wore green Jets jerseys. Both had the word “army” on the back. The teams were made up of members of the New York City Recruiting Battalion with participants from all over the New York City area. One team represented Brooklyn and the other Manhattan, Staten Island, the Bronx, Westchester County and Long Island. All three Jets players took the time to greet the soldiers, sign autographs and answer questions. I think it’s really, really fun for our family members and for our soldiers and we are appreciative of the Jets organization for doing this.” When asked how important it was to see an NFL team like the Jets come out to support the troops, Lt. Col. Judd Floris, commander of the New York City Recruiting Battalion, responded, “It’s very important. Every organization that supports the military is a friend to the Army. “And being a member of the Army for almost 20 years, it’s great to see an organization, especially from the National Football League, here to support our military. It makes me proud as an American and makes my soldiers appreciate what the Jets have done.” Two of the three Jets stars had never been to Brooklyn before. Educational How to Have a Stress Free Holiday Season The holidays are a complicated time. Sure, it’s “the most wonderWeek of November 16-22, 2017 ful time of the year” but it’s also a time of too many invitations, not enough time, not enough money and — for some of us — really complicated feelings about family, relationships and friends. In this light-hearted, 90-minute workshop you will tune into your own version of cheer (there will be spiked cider), make plans to create more joy, and plot with friends to actively avoid seasonal stress. By the end, you’ll walk away with a solid plan for a stressfree, joy-filled holiday season and lots of new friends. Reclaim NY Study Crunches Numbers for Southwest Brooklyn By Paula Katinas INBrooklyn
A new study reveals what many residents of Southwest Brooklyn have been complaining about for years: It is very expensive to live there. The nonprofit organization Reclaim New York crunched the numbers to determine the cost of day-today life in Bay Ridge and other Southwest Brooklyn neighborhoods and came up with some sobering conclusions. The study zeroed in on Sheepshead Bay, Dyker Heights, Sea Gate, Bay Ridge and Brighton Beach. The researchers looked at everything from housing costs, taxes, food expenses, even cell phone bills. The study, called the “Affordability Crisis Report,” concluded that if you take all of the taxes residents pay and add it to the cost of basic expenses, Southwest Brooklyn residents in nearly all income levels are struggling to make ends meet. Saving money for a rainy day is next to impossible, the report concluded. In Bay Ridge, the report found, a middle-class family earning the neighborhood median income of $62,761 a year will spend $18,389 a year on rent. That’s nearly 30 percent of their annual income. The study also found that the Bay Ridge family is also hit hard in the wallet by the fact that their transportation expenses amount to more than 19 percent of their income. Meanwhile, a family in Dyker Heights earning double the median income of $128,500 a year for that neighborhood has only $2,245, or 2 percent, of their hard-earned money left over after taxes and expenses, according to Reclaim New York. Things aren’t any better in Sheepshead Bay, where a family of four making the area’s median income of $71,115 is left with next to nothing after taxes and living expenses. Talk about living paycheck to paycheck! The “Affordability Crisis Report” also took a long, hard look at several neighborhoods on Staten Island. “Our report takes a personal, local look at the bottom-line impact of New York City and state policies that drive up the cost of living, making it difficult for families to build a future here,” Reclaim New York ExArtist: Leon Polk Smith. By examining the full slate of expenses they have to pay, and going down to the zip code level, we shine a light on where all that money is going,” he said. Muir pointed to rent, transportation costs and taxes as some of the main culprits. “We see families unable to build a solid future when making double or triple the median income. It’s a clear sign policies at every level of government have failed to keep our communities affordable,” he stated. SEEresidents PAGES 18-19 New Yorker state pay nearly 200 different
taxes, according to the study. Residents pay the 16th highest sales tax in the country, the report found. “Nobody works harder than New Yorkers, and it is awful to see people keeping so little of their earnings after taxes and expenses take a massive bite,” Muir added. “Government is driving the cost of living up, not down. Citizens have to ask how Albany and City Hall can keep making this affordability crisis worse, and failing to relieve pressure from working and middle-class families.” To read the full Affordability Crisis Report visit Photo courtesy of Carla Shen www.reclaimnewyork.org/new-york-city-affordability-crisis.
