GUEST EDITORIAL What Foiled NYC Attack Says About Lone-Wolf Bombers By Harry Bruinius, The Christian Science Monitor
W
hen New York officials gathered outside the Port Authority in Manhattan on Monday to discuss the failed subway bombing a few hours earlier, they expressed a city’s collective sense of relief. “It’s in many ways one of our worst nightmares,” said Gov. Andrew Cuomo. But the “counter reality,” he said, turned out better than initial expectations and fears. “This is New York and we all pitch together, and we are a savvy people and we keep our eyes open.” On a packed subway system that serves more than 5.6 million riders, its cars and platforms teeming with shoulder-to-shoulder commuters every workday, many New Yorkers have long been aware of the havoc a single explosion could wreak. “Let’s be clear, as New Yorkers, our lives revolve around the subways,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio on Monday. “When we hear of an attack on the subways, it’s incredibly unsettling... Thank God the perpetrator did not achieve his ultimate goals. Thank God our first responders were there so quickly to address the situation and make sure people were safe. Thank God the only injuries that we know at this point were minor.” Yet even as many New Yorkers express such relief at the relatively minor impact of the latest terror attack on their city, experts point out that both suicide attacks and those that attempt to hide homemade bombs in public places are rarely successful. Only three people sustained minor injuries from the crude, homemade pipe bomb assembled by Akayed Ullah, the Bangladeshi immigrant who lived in Brooklyn for seven years and carried out Monday’s failed attack. Stuffed with match heads and wired with Christmas tree lights, authorities said, his bomb, strapped to his body with Velcro straps, blew up accidentally and caused serious burns and injuries to his abdomen. Indeed, there has never been a successful suicide bombing on U.S. soil. And since 9/11, there has only been a single suicide attack in the United States, according to a database compiled by the University of Chicago — a domestic act of terror that did not involve warped religious beliefs.

In 2010, a Texas man, Andrew Joseph Stack III, deliberately flew his single-engine plane into an Internal Revenue Office in Austin, citing the “greed” and “insanity” of the nation’s tax collectors. His suicide attack killed one IRS worker and injured 13. The worst terrorist bombing in U.S. history was perpetrated by Timothy McVeigh, the American domestic terrorist who detonated a fertilizer truck bomb in front of a federal office building in Oklahoma City in 1995, killing 168 people, including 10 preschool children. And even when it comes to the sort of homemade bombs used by Ullah, “these devices aren’t really sophisticated, and they often fail,” says Don Haider-Markel, professor and chair of political science at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, and an expert in terrorism and counterterrorism measures. “And most of the failures you don’t even hear about, because they’re usually when somebody makes one and puts it into someone’s mailbox, or puts it in front of someone’s door — maybe it happens in Iowa somewhere, and it never makes national news.” In 2013, Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev built two homemade bombs and planted them near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring hundreds. But most others were unsuccessful, experts say. In 2016, a husband and father from Afghanistan, Ahmad Khan Rahimi, who lived most of his life in New Jersey, planted nine explosives in New York and New Jersey, but most failed to explode. After one of his homemade devices blew up a dumpster in Manhattan, one New Yorker walking half a block away with his wife and two young daughters thought, “Oh, that’s all you got?” (That bravado was echoed by many New Yorkers Monday, including talk show host Stephen Colbert, who said, “You tried to terrorize New York and you failed. We’re stronger than that. The worst you did is make the subways run late — and the MTA does that just fine without your help.”)
In 2010, the naturalized U.S. citizen Faisal Shahzad, who trained with bombmakers in Pakistan, botched his attempt to explode a vehicle in Times Square. These were just the latest in a string of failures since the 9/11 attacks. In 2001, the “shoe bomber” Richard Reid was foiled in his attempt to light the fuse and bring down a flight from Paris to Miami. In 2009, the “underwear bomber” Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab failed to detonate his device on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit. Even so, the attempted attack in New York comes as suicide attacks around the globe have reached record levels. Earlier this year, researchers at the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University in Israel found that 2016 was the deadliest year on record for suicide terror attacks worldwide: there were nearly 500 attacks in 28 countries that killed about 5,650 people. But in the U.S., the majority of Al Qaeda and ISIS-inspired terror attempts have been perpetrated by “lone wolf” actors, without the support of wider networks. “We really don’t have terror cells here in the United States,” says Charles Strozier, director of the Center on Terrorism at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. “And that is because there are some very important structural and cultural factors at work. “Our Muslim-American community here is much more assimilated, peaceful, and middle class than the communities in Europe,” which have more first generation, working class immigrants who tend to follow more fundamentalist ideologies, he explains. The majority of suicide bombings around the world are carried out by groups fighting foreign occupation, according to the research of Robert Pape, a professor of political science at the University of Chicago and the author of the 2010 book “Cutting the Fuse: The Explosion of Global Suicide Terrorism and How to Stop It.” And fewer than 10 percent of such terrorists cross national borders to carry out their attacks, found Pape, the founding director of the Chicago Project on Security & Threats, which maintains the exhaustive database on global suicide attacks. Even in Europe, a number of attempted suicide bombings failed. In July 2016, the device of a Syrian terrorist exploded too early outside a German music festival, killing only the bomber. In Jakarta, Indonesia, a would-be terrorist’s backpack burned but failed to explode in a packed church. He then attacked and injured a priest with an axe. In August, a bomb blew up in the safe house of a terror cell in Spain, killing one member, before the group used a truck to kill 13 people on Barcelona’s Las Ramblas. But law enforcement has also become savvier in thwarting such plots in New York, experts say. In 2011, the NYPD arrested the Al Qaeda sympathizer Jose Pimentel just hours before he was about to finish a powerful pipe bomb in Harlem. In 2012, police arrested a Bangladeshi man here on a student visa after he tried to detonate a bomb in front of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in lower Manhattan. And just this past October, the FBI and NYPD foiled a plot by three ISIS-inspired would-be terrorists who were also planning a bombing campaign in the subway system and other public places. “Some kind of threat to the subways will always exist, and that’s just something we have to live with,” says Strozier. “Some ordinary citizens might not want to hear that, but I think that’s what we’ve accepted.” © 2017 The Christian Science Monitor
Anti-Terror Squad Chasing Contacts For Brooklyn Man Who Made Bomb Continued from page 1 Surveillance cameras captured the man walking casually through the crowded passage when the bomb went off at 7:20 a.m. amid a plume of white smoke, which cleared to show the man sprawled on the ground and commuters scattering to get away. Investigators said it was not clear if he set the bomb off intentionally or prematurely. “This was an attempted terrorist attack,” Mayor Bill de Blasio told reporters. “Thank God the perpetrator did not achieve his ultimate goals.” The suspect, who was identified as 27year-old Akayed Ullah, was being treated at a hospital for burns to his hands and abdomen. The others who were injured suffered ringing in the ears and headaches. Law enforcement officials said Ullah was inspired by the Islamic State group but had apparently not had any direct contact with the group and probably acted alone. The officials said the suspect lives in Brooklyn and came to the U.S. from Bangladesh about seven years ago. They said he was speaking with investigators from his hospital bed. A person briefed on the investigation said Ullah came to the U.S. on an F-4 visa, a preferential visa available for those with family in the U.S. who are citizens, and that he made the bomb in his apartment. They spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the blast. Investigators were searching his apartment, interviewing witnesses and relatives and looking for surveillance footage that may show his movements in the moments before the attack. The explosion, which happened in an underground passageway under 42nd Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues, triggered a massive emergency response by police and
firefighters both above and below ground, tangling subway and bus service at the nearby Port Authority bus terminal. It’s the city’s busiest subway station and a major transit hub, with 64 million subway riders passing through every year. In 2016, daily ridership on the subway was 5.7 million, a record high. Everything around Times Square was shut down, halting what would ordinarily be a bustling rush hour at the “Crossroads of the World.” But streets quickly began returning to normal, and traffic around the area was expected to be operational by the evening rush. “I’m grateful for the diligent response of the NYPD, FDNY and all of our first responders to today’s pipe bomb explosion at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan, an incident that we are blessed did not result in more serious damage,” said
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams in a statement. “New York City remains the safest big city in America because of their bravery and hard work each and every day. New Yorkers know all too well that terror-minded individuals have our city in their sights, but we know that no matter how they may try to shake us, they will never, ever break us. As we learn more about the suspect of this attack, including his connections to Brooklyn, I urge everyone to respect the ongoing investigation and not fall victim to the kind of divisive behavior that terror seeks to spread.” Authorities said the bomb was a low-tech explosive device attached to the man with Velcro and plastic ties. They were investigating how it was made. Port Authority police said officers found the man injured on the ground, with wires protruding from his jacket to his pants and the

device strapped to his torso under his coat. They said he was reaching for a cellphone and they grabbed his hands. A photo published by the New York Post showed a bearded man crumpled on the ground with his shirt apparently blown off and black soot covering his bare midriff. A police officer was holding the man’s hands behind his back. Another photo shown on cable channel NY1 showed the bearded suspect, wideeyed, on a stretcher being loaded into an ambulance. Elrana Peralta, a customer-service worker for Greyhound, said she works in the Port Authority terminal near where the blast happened but did not hear the explosion. “All we could hear was the chaos,” she said. “We could hear people yelling, ‘Get out! Get out! Get out!’” John Miles, who is from Vermont, was waiting for a bus to Massachusetts. He did not hear the blast either, but saw police react. “I didn’t know what was going on. Officers were running around. I was freaking out,” he said. There was an announcement that people should take their bags and leave. “They didn’t incite panic. It was fairly orderly.” White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders tweeted that President Donald Trump had been briefed on the explosion. Instead of commenting on the suspected terror attack, Trump sent a tweet at 9:17 a.m. criticizing a Sunday story in The New York Times that said he watched cable news television for at least four hours a day. The blast came just weeks after eight people died in New York when another man, also said to be inspired by the Islamic State, drove a rented truck onto a bike path near the World Trade Center. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at a news conference following the attack that New Yorkers should be alert but go about their lives. “Let’s go back to work,” he said. “”We’re not going to allow them to disrupt us.” Associated press writers Jake Pearson, Kiley Armstrong, Larry Neumeister and Michael Balsamo and researcher Rhonda Shafner contributed to this report.

Giovanni Savarese is leaving one hipster hub for another. The former Cosmos head coach is set to manage Major League Soccer’s (MLS) Portland Timbers next season, according to ESPN’s Taylor Twellman. It may not be promotion/relegation, but it’s certainly a promotion for Savarese, who coached Pele’s former team for five seasons, winning three North American Soccer League (NASL) championships and accumulating a 65-26-51 regular-season record. Cosmos supporters lauded Savarese this past campaign for turning around a franchise that was on the verge of extinction with no stadium to play in, no jersey sponsor and no tickets sold. With little time for preparation, the off-season insecurity left Savarese to scramble at the last minute. He was tasked with preparing his players — many of them new — on short notice, while also trying to instill his system of play. On top of that, his team needed time to gel and build chemistry.

At his graduation from the Phillipa Schuyler Junior High School in Bushwick, Guy Lodge had never heard the word “valedictorian.” Up until that point, he was just a Brooklyn kid who enjoyed hanging out with friends more than spending time studying. After seeing the valedictorian receive accolades at the ceremony, he decided to focus on academic excellence. “It was like night and day,” Lodge said of the change he felt after simply learning the word. For Lodge, just hearing about someone else’s high achievement gave him a sense of what he should aspire to. He ended up buckling down and graduating high school with a basketball scholarship. “Not everyone will be valedictorian. However, when we strive for perfection, then often times
we can achieve excellence,” he explained. The experience of learning about the word “valedictorian” was so impactful to Lodge that he self-published a children’s book titled “Valedictorian.” The book is meant to inspire young students to try their best, and includes practical advice for doing so. It champions the importance of being a voracious reader and taking the time to exercise your body, says Lodge. For extra inspiration, the book includes a poster of famous valedictorians and salutatorians, such as Alicia Keys, Hillary Clinton, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Coretta Scott King and Michelle Obama. The book and posters are illustrated by Orlando Jones. “Valedictorian” is available online at www. learn2readread2learn.com.

Looking back, however, the Venezuelan gaffer did an admirable job given the circumstances, leading the Cosmos to their third consecutive NASL Championship. “Gio will always be a special person for me,” said Spanish legend and former Cosmos player Raul. “After almost one year of conversations, he convinced me to start a new journey with the Cosmos in 2015. Not only did Gio lead us to win the championship that year, but he also got us to be a family and gave us memories I will never forget. “Gio is a very hardworking person with a great heart. He loves what he does and is passionate about being a head coach. I wish him all the success in the world. He deserves it.” Savarese takes over a Portland Timbers side that finished first in the Western Conference last season, before losing to the Houston Dynamo in the Conference Semifinals of the playoffs. Although it's tough for the Cosmos to lose a valued coach, one who demanded an attractive possession-based soccer, it’s a well-deserved upgrade and a testament to NASL’s ability to breed quality managers. “Gio broke into professional coaching with our club and quickly established himself as one of the finest leaders in U.S. Soccer,” said Cosmos Chairman Rocco Commisso. “In the eleven months I had the opportunity to work with Gio, he has proven to be an even better person.” Commisso added, “I thank Gio for his enormous contributions to the Cosmos and wish him and his beautiful family nothing but the best as he moves forward into the next chapter of his coaching career.” Sources confirmed with Twellman, a former MLS and United States Men’s National Soccer Team player, that the Timbers also had interest in New York Red Bulls manager Jesse Marsch, but the Red Bulls blocked communication. Savarese’s ability to speak Spanish helped land him the job, according to Twellman. The Timbers have eight players hailing from Spanish-speaking countries. Despite leading Portland to a first-place finish, former coach Caleb Porter and the Timbers mutually parted ways. While it’s still unclear why 42-year-old Porter decided to leave the team, one thing is for sure: The Timbers have a formidable coach in Savarese. Perhaps Savarese was upset that Brooklyn was snubbed off MoveHub’s recently released U.S. Hipster Index. Portland, after all, was ranked the 12th-most hipster city, according to the report, while Porter’s hometown of Tacoma, Washington, came in at sixth. Or maybe the Venezuelan cherished the opportunity to take over a skilled team in America’s top tier. Either way, it will be interesting to see how Savarese adapts to MLS, a faster-paced and more competitive league than NASL.

One of Brooklyn's most renowned restaurants, The River Café at 1 Water St. in DUMBO certainly has a long, rich history. The dream started for owner Michael “Buzzy” O’Keeffe back in the 1960s when he envisioned the restaurant’s iconic setting. A few years back The New York Times wrote a fascinating background story: “Back in the 1960s, when nobody except rats, longshoremen and gangsters needing to dispose of a wayward bookie saw much value in the Brooklyn waterfront, Michael O’Keeffe saw romance. He saw enough flowers for a year of proms, he saw a piano player massaging a Steinway, he saw a curtain of glass framing the Brooklyn Bridge and the lights of Fortress Manhattan on the other side. All of this he saw floating on a barge in the East River. After pleading for permits for 12 years, he persuaded City Hall to see it too, and in 1977 The River Café dropped anchor.” And the rest, as they say, is culinary history since The River Café has remained one of the finest dining destinations in the world. Online Comments About Bareburger at 149 Court St.: “Love the burgers. Love the fries. Love the shakes. Love the salads ... Best Brussel Sprouts! … Delicious, gift-wrapped and ready to go! ... Fast delivery and good food … SoCal burger and sweet potato fries were delicious!” And it goes on and on, proving that Bareburger is so much more than a, well, burger joint. In other words, this ain’t your typical fast-food hamburger. Burgers on the menu include unusual options like elk, ostrich and wild boar, and are made from organic or all-natural meats. Beef and bison patties come from grass-fed animals, and the chicken, turkey and eggs are cage-free.
And here's a fascinating fact: Bareburger is a four-time winner of a prestigious Michelin Guide recommendation and has received multiple awards from the James Beard Foundation. The Brazen Head at 228 Atlantic Ave. might just be the most fun place to hoist a brew for the holidays. The place is known for its warm, familial, “no frills bar attitude” and with the holidays fast approaching, this is just the place to duck into for a welcome respite from shopping. The Brazen Head is an authentic bar where everyone is super friendly. It serves 15 craft beers on tap and two cask-conditioned, hand-pulled beers, killer cocktails, excellent wines by the glass and a large selection of single malt scotch, premium vodkas, distinguished rums, tequilas and small batch bourbons. And don’t forget Trivia Night every Monday (except the first Monday of each month) with Jeopardy! champ Austin Rogers hosting. You can read our interview and learn more about the beloved Jeopardy! celebrity at our website www.brooklyneagle.com. If you're searching for healthy homemade products that are now featured at Whole Foods, then Damascus Bakery is your go-to place. The iconic store at 195 Atlantic Ave. is where it all started 84 years ago. With Ed and Dave Mafoud at the helm, old-world traditions and new-world technology provide the perfect recipe for an extensive line of pitas, lahvash wraps, paninis, flat bread rollups and pizza crusts. Overheard at Nanatori: “I love this sushi! The fish is fresh, the place looks great and the price is right. What more can you ask from the perfect Japanese restaurant?” Dine in or order out, either way you know you're enjoying some of the finest seafood in the borough. It's just one block away from the Brooklyn Historical Society, and it's making its own culinary history on Montague Street. Online Comments about Chadwick's restaurant at 8822 Third Ave: “Amazing meal for my husband’s birthday. This place never disappoints! Portions are large and the take on the wedge salad is seriously amazing.” And that's why Chadwick’s has acquired the distinction of being the place to go to celebrate birthdays, baptisms, bar-mitzvahs and various other kinds of receptions. And as we mentioned recently, owners Steven Oliver and Gerry Morris along with their wives and Steven’s brother-in-law Tommy Mayrose spent an entire day decoratively dressing up the restaurant in perfect holiday fashion. Giant lighted wreaths adorn the dining rooms and the fireplace is surrounded by Santa’s reindeer. So there's no better time to stop by and toast the season at Chadwick’s, where friends gather at the bar to enjoy spirits before heading to the dining room, where the food is outstanding and the ambiance is simply incredible.
HERE’S A GREAT GIFT IDEA: A GIFT CERTIFICATE TO YOUR FAVORITE BROOKLYN RESTAURANT!

Modern-day Gerritsen e is on the corner of Kent Avenue across Beach has about 1,800 houses. Narrow streets are laid out in two separate grids, one of them north of Shell Bank Canal, the other south of it. People sometimes refer to the part of the neighborhood that’s north of the canal as the New Section and call the south side the Old Section. The street names in both sections are in alphabetical order, with one set of names for the Old Section’s streets and another set of names for the New Section’s streets. It’s customary for families who live in Gerritsen Beach to stay in the neighborhood generation after generation. They are devoted to it come hell or high water. Superstorm Sandy hit them with hellish high water in October 2012. A 10-foot storm surge flooded nearly all their houses. They’ve been rebuilding. See related story. To honor residents’ determination and resiliency, we recently took photos of their unique and beautiful neighborhood. See brooklyneagle.com for additional pictures. P.S.: Shell Bank Canal’s not the only Gerritsen Beach waterfront scenery with a wow factor. At the end of Gerritsen Avenue, there’s publicly accessible shoreline along Plumb Beach Channel. When you stand on the sand, unless you have a camera with a telephoto lens, you won’t really notice the cars on the Belt Parkway, which is on the channel’s far shoreline. Also, Shell Bank Creek, which can be seen from the dead ends of numerous streets, is photogenic. Sunsets along the creek are terrific.

I’ll give ya shelter from the storm. Five years after Superstorm Sandy, rebuilding continues in Gerritsen Beach, a beloved Brooklyn neighborhood on a slim peninsula. The refrain from Bob Dylan’s old song came to mind the other day as we walked the streets of the picturesque, water-ringed neighborhood. On many blocks, we saw residential construction projects in varying stages of completion. On some of the fences surrounding the construction sites, signs saying “NYC Build It Back” have been posted. That’s a city program for administering federal Superstorm Sandy-related relief funds. At some sites, brand-new houses are being constructed to replace Sandy-damaged homes that had to be demolished. At other sites, new foundations are being built to raise existing houses several feet off the ground to comply with flood-protection regulations. The aim of both types of construction projects is to leave homeowners with residences that will provide shelter from the (next) storm. The homeowners doing the rebuilding and renovation have owned their properties for many years — in some cases for several decades, city Finance Department records show.

Superstorm Sandy, which struck New York City on Oct. 29, 2012, was a harrowing disaster for Gerritsen Beach residents. The city had classified Gerritsen Beach as a Zone B area, so they weren’t required to evacuate before Sandy struck. The reasoning, which turned out to be erroneous, was that the Belt Parkway on the opposite shore of Plumb Beach Channel from Gerritsen Beach would protect the neighborhood from life-threatening flooding. It didn’t. There was a 10-foot storm surge. Nearly all the approximately 1,800 houses in Gerritsen Beach were flooded. The neighborhood’s volunteer fire department played a huge role in the neighborhood’s recovery. So did organizations called Gerritsen Beach Cares and the Gerritsen Beach Long Term Recovery Project.
ie s o the Williamsburg Water Examples of brand-new-house construction to replace Sandy-damaged dwellings include 13 Gotham Ave., 39 Seba Ave. and 9 Post Court, city Buildings Department filings indicate. Existing houses that are getting new foundations to raise them off the ground include 55 Bartlett Place, 5 Cyrus Ave. and 6A Melba Court, Buildings Department records show.

Douglaston Development also constructed the Edge Community Apartments, which are two affordable-housing buildings on North 6th Street.
A Pool With a View But more about Level BK, which has 554 apartments, all of them market-rate. Tenants started moving into the building on July 15, said Can Nomer of real-estate brokerage MNS, who is Level BK’s leasing director. He was our tour guide. The first thing we wanted to see was the complex’s swimming pool on the building’s ninth floor. Because it is enclosed with floor-to-ceiling glass, we figured the views would be pretty great. Glass panels on three sides of the pool can be opened when weather permits to turn it into an outdoor pool. We were right about the views. We could see Manhattan’s World Trade Center, the Lower East Side and iconic Midtown skyscrapers — and also Long Island City’s new apartment towers and notso-new One Court Square, the office building Citigroup constructed in the late 1980s.
A Landscape Dotted With Landmarks We also spotted various Greenpoint landmarks — including the spire of iconic 19th-century St. Anthony-St. Alphonsus Church. It was designed by Patrick Charles Keely, who was nicknamed “the Prince of American Catholic Architects.”

Arts Resolution The main theme in Larry Weekes’ work has been his passionate belief in the term “IWE” (I am part of WE) — the connection of human beings to each other. Frank Morrison: Urban Restoration Exhibition This exhibit explores the reclaiming of discourse surrounding urban environments and the voices that narrate, advocate and profit from their existence. The ever-increasing social cache of “street art” into contemporary “fine art” spaces is evidence of the allure of new narratives. A new narrative that highlights everyday people who are often misrepresented. The core of the city has an incubative nature that has birthed hip-hop, the culture that narrates a collective journey of resilience through survival. Using the events of 9/11, the 2003 Northeast Blackout, Superstorm Sandy and other severe weather events as examples, the exhibition reveals the critical role that mass transit personnel play in preparing for and responding to natural and manmade disasters. Through a vibrant display of objects, photographs, media and personal accounts, the exhibition highlights the technical and professional skills needed to restore public transportation service and get New Yorkers moving again after crisis strikes. When: Tuesday-Sunday, through February 2018 (TuesdayFriday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.) Where: Downtown Brooklyn/New York Transit Museum (Boerum Place and Schermerhorn Street)

Historic Landscapes as Venues for Sustainable Design with Larry Weaner For just under 30 years, renowned landscape designer Larry Weaner has urged America to rethink its love affair with the manicured lawn. Since establishing his firm in 1982, Weaner has pushed for “planned, natural landscapes” that eliminate the need for frequent mowing and other unsustainable practices, advocating native plants that have an ecological relationship to the indigenous landscape. Jill Eisenstadt’s Novel Focuses on Religion, Family & Brooklyn’s Coast
Author Jill Eisenstadt Photo by Beowulf Sheehan, courtesy of Little, Brown
INBrooklyn The Rockaways are part of an important network of diverse habitats, and serve the ever-important role of adding a protective buffer for Brooklyn’s coastal areas. They also happen to be the setting for Brooklyn resident Jill Eisenstadt’s newest book, “Swell” (June, published by Little, Brown). The book includes some of the characters of her debut novel, “From Rockaway,” which secured her place among the legendary “literary brat pack” of the 1980s. In “Swell,” Sue and Dan Glassman, along with their two daughters and third baby on the way, are desperate to move out of their cramped Tribeca apartment. Sue even agrees to give into her father-in-law’s demand that he convert to Judaism to help out with the purchase. As her oldest daughter puts it, she “sold her soul for a sea view and a few extra bathrooms”. They end up moving into a potentially haunted house dubbed “the murder house” in the Rockaways. On the weekend of Sue’s conversion party, the house’s previous owner Rose arrives at their doorstep after escaping her assisted living facility. She seems intent on moving back in. Before long, the situation in the house begins to swell out of control. “Swell” is at once hilarious and insightful as it navigates family, relationships and the perils of living in an uncertain world.
Evolution of Art Is Topic of Book by St. Francis Professor INBrooklyn
The evolution of art in human beings is the topic of a new book by St. Francis College English Professor Gregory F. Tague, “Art and Adaptability: Consciousness and Cognitive Culture.” Tague’s work takes an interdisciplinary approach which examines art evolution through material culture, symbolic inheritance, and social learning. “In exploring the origins of art behavior, ‘Art and Adaptability’ argues for a theory of mind and material/art culture. Mind reading is part of our human evolution and involved in the arts,” Tague said. “The book covers relevant areas from great ape intelligence, hominin evolution, Stone Age tools, Paleolithic culture and neurobiology. “We use material and art objects, whether painting or sculpture, to modify our own and other people’s thoughts so as to affect behavior,” he added. “We don’t just make judgments about mental states; we create objects about which we make judgments in which mental states are inherent.” Tague has edited two scholarly and five literary collections. He is also the editor of ASEBL Journal, which investigates the intersection of ethics, arts and evolution. St. Francis College is located at 180 Remsen St., Brooklyn Heights.
