Volunteers from faith-based and grassroots organizations have spent their early morning for several weeks helping people released from an immigrant detention center in South Texas prepare for their journeys across the country. The Brownsville Herald reports they are continuing work that started in McAllen when public outrage over the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance policy” and family separations at the border hit its peak earlier this year. Four volunteers from the Good Neighbor Settlement House greeted 15 immigrants who were dropped off around 6 a.m. on a recent Friday by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Volunteers helped them get their bus tickets, use their phones to call family members, distributed backpacks, food and offer rides to those heading for the airport. Those in the process of seeking asylum are sometimes dropped off at La Plaza at Brownsville Terminal with little more than the clothes on their backs, said volunteer Jim Pace. “We identify ourselves as being from the Evangelical Methodist Church,” he said, “and we have Good Neighbor Settlement House where — if their trip is delayed — they can have shelter, rest, a bath, hot food, and we’ll bring them back to the bus station.” Jack White, executive director of the settlement house, said the original intent was to give shelter to immigrants dropped off at the bus station at night. Meeting them in the morning has had an impact on the number of volunteers who can help, he added. “Given the situation, we’re here to alleviate the pain and suffering refugees have experienced,” White said. “We need more volunteers to continue this process, but we’ve got some great people and really appreciate the support we’ve gotten from ICE, the new police chief and the community for these people who just need to be treated like human beings.” As the arriving immigrants settled in, Pace talked with 27year-old Augustine from Cuba. Augustine said he traveled through 13 counties before turning himself in at a bridge in Matamoros, Mexico, and he was detained for 38 days. 2 • Brooklyn PHOENIX • Friday, September 14, 2018

Pace said the migrants are given temporary asylum until their case is heard by an assigned immigration judge in the area to which they are traveling. Immigrants recently helped were heading around the country, including New York, North Carolina and Florida. They were joined by volunteers from Angry Tias and Abuelas, a group started in McAllen to give supplies to asylum-seekers released at the bus station there. The men, known as Los Primos, brought clothing donated by their friends and cards with information on how to find pro bono legal services. Sergio Cordova said he has been coming to the bus station to distribute donations for about four weeks, after another member of Angry Tias and Abuelas spread the word that immigrants were being left at the station. “What I’m guessing is when the court system said they wouldn’t do ‘zero tolerance,’ I think that’s when they started releasing people,” he said of a federal policy that required criminal prosecution of all people illegally entering the country. The Trump administration this month announced new regulations that would discard a limit on how long immigrant children can be detained and allow the government to hold families until their immigration cases are decided, the Associated Press reported. John Chosy, Good Neighbor Settlement House development director, said Interim Brownsville Police Chief David Dale told the group recently released detainees are targets for robbery and other crimes. Police have stepped up their presence in the area, Chosy added, and volunteers have worked with leadership at the Port Isabel detention center to select a safe drop-off spot. “All these people want is what God gave me,” he said. “It’s really humbling to see what these people go through just so they can have a shot at what we were given.”

Marianela Watson, a settlement house board member, lent her phone to the women contacting their families and trying to sort out money transfers. One woman became worried after realizing she could not get the funds her sister had wired without an ID, fearing she wouldn’t have money during her three-day bus trip. “I came because Jack said, ‘I need help,’” Watson said. “You can tell they’re afraid, but you go talk to them and see them relax, and you have a short relationship.” Daniel, 27, spent the day at Good Neighbor Settlement House as he waited for his bus to Massachusetts. The Guatemala City man said he had a job at a gasoline station but decided to flee when gang members threatened to kill him if he did not join them. Daniel said he crossed the Rio Grande near Reynosa, Mexico, and was detained for 44 days. He said he was grateful to the volunteers who met him at the bus station because he didn’t have any money or know what to do next. He plans to donate to the organization so they can continue that work.

Economic Impact Felt In DA’s ‘Weed Whack’ Of Past Convictions By Rob Abruzzese Brooklyn PHOENIX

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced last Friday that he will vacate all past marijuana misdemeanor convictions in the borough, which could potentially help up to 20,000 people who have been convicted in Brooklyn since 1990. This announcement does not legalize marijuana in the borough or state, which could lead to an estimated $700 million in tax revenue in the city and state, according to a report issued by NYS Comptroller Scott Stringer in May, but it could still end up helping ease the burden on taxpayers as it frees up resources in the DA’s office, the court system and the NYPD. “We believe there are approximately 20,000 people in Brooklyn who have been convicted for marijuana and would be eligible for this benefit,” Eric Gonzalez said during a press conference last Friday at the Lenox Road Baptist Church in Prospect Lefferts Gardens. “We have worked with the court system on how to deal with these warrants and convictions,” Gonzalez continued. “If you have a misdemeanor conviction for marijuana, I urge you to come forward. Everyone who comes forward will be given the opportunity to have an attorney to represent them for free.” Under the program, anyone who was convicted of a low-level marijuana possession charge will be eligible to file a motion to vacate that conviction and dismiss the charges.

A court appearance isn’t even necessary, Gonzalez said. Interested individuals, who will be provided with free attorneys, are directed to get legal consultation during the DA office’s annual Begin Again program, which will take place this year on Sept. 21-22 at the Lenox Road Baptist Church on Nostrand Avenue. Similar community-based events will be held periodically throughout Brooklyn in the coming months. There are exceptions to eligibility including cases where people have other convictions for violent felonies or sex offenses. Gonzalez said that this program will allow his office to stop wasting resources and time on prosecuting nearly all low-level marijuana cases and instead will focus on the most egregious cases. “So few of these cases would likely go to trial anyway, so this frees up resources earlier in the process,” said Michael Cibella, president of the Kings County Criminal Bar Association. “No longer are we going to waste time arresting people, fingerprinting them, waiting 24 hours for a judge, then only to have their cases dismissed. It frees up resources in the DA’s office, in the courts and, perhaps most importantly, it has removed the entire experience from a person’s life.” Cibella added that it also makes New York’s system more equitable compared to other states that have laws in place to remove convictions, or seal them, after a certain amount of time.

A report that was released by the state Health Department in July said that the positive effects of marijuana legalization outweighed the negative ones. That 75-page report went further than Stringer’s report and estimated that tax revenue could be as high as $900 million for the city and state. While taxpayers have to wait on that revenue, they will see relief as the New York Daily News estimated in a report published on May 18, 2017 that it costs the city an average of $118,000 per year to hold each inmate. “To be clear, these convictions are not keeping us safer,” Gonzalez stressed at Friday’s press conference. “These convictions are the product of uneven enforcement and it’s time that we remedy this as we move forward to a new day in the city on how we enforce marijuana laws.” Gonzalez said that as part of this program, his office will also throw out outstanding

summons warrants and encouraged anyone with an open warrant to show up to Begin Again in two weeks. This project is a part of Gonzalez’s 2020 initiative, for which he created a commission of nearly 70 experts in criminal justice from various backgrounds to implement reforms. He explained that this is just the first of 17 new initiatives that will be announced in the upcoming months. “We’re doing everything tangible that we can do to make this a fairer system,” Gonzalez said. Last Friday’s announcement is part of a trend by DA Gonzalez to lessen the impact of marijuana enforcement, particularly on communities of color. In August 2017, he dismissed nearly 143,000 summonses warrants 10-years-old or older in an effort to help Brooklynites avoid unintended consequences of past low-level offenses. In May 2018, Gonzalez announced that his office would stop prosecuting most low-level marijuana offenses, and now he has moved to vacate old records too. “These people have already paid the price and to continue this conviction in perpetuity does not make sense and is not fair,” he said. Public Advocate Letitia James was at last Friday’s press conference. She expressed full support for Gonzalez’s plan and said she hopes that the other boroughs will soon copy his move. She also expressed support for full legalization of marijuana in the state. “Far too often, arrests for committing lowlevel offenses follow our young people — mostly black and brown men — throughout their lives, causing them to lose out on critical resources they need to survive,” said James. “This new initiative allows for individuals who have misdemeanor marijuana convictions to get the fresh start they deserve.”

Legal Aid Society Starts a GoFundMe to Help Immigrant Families Pay Filing Fees Continued to page 1 Previously there was a fee waiver for lowincome immigrants, but the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) has begun a practice of regularly denying waiver requests, even in cases of victims fleeing domestic violence. “These application fees come at an enormous price, which for many of our clients is simply insurmountable,” said Hasan Shafiqullah, attorney-in-charge of the Immigration Law Unit at the Legal Aid Society. “The hurdles are even more daunting now that USCIS has begun to indiscriminately reject fee waiver requests, putting many of our clients at immediate risk. Supporting this campaign will help us fight un-

lawful deportation, unjust detention and to keep families together.” Most of the filing fees cannot be waived, such as the $1,760 fee for a green card, the $725 fee for citizenship, the $540 fee to renew a green card and the $930 fee for a victim of a violent crime to seek relief. Legal Aid expects the government to issue new rules in the near future that will make it harder for any financial relief. Legal Aid helps immigrant families with their fees when possible. The GoFundMe has raised $5,861 of its $25,000 goal as of last Thursday afternoon. Forty-one people have donated in 16 days. undreds of kids in Coney Island are beginning the school year with brand new backpacks that were donated to them, thanks to the Alliance for Coney Island Inc., which organized a back-to-school fair to get the youngsters off to a good start. The alliance sponsored a Back-to-School Fair on a five-block stretch of Mermaid Ave. on Sept. 8. Composed of businesses, non-profit groups and community leaders, the alliance is a public-private partnership that works to improve the quality of life for Coney Island residents. The alliance receives support from Borough President Eric Adams and the New York City Economic Development Corporation to operate its various community improvement programs. On Saturday, the alliance handed out 500 backpacks to children attending the fair with their parents. The kids got an added bonus. The backpacks were filled with school supplies. Councilmember Mark Treyger, a Democrat who represents Coney Island, helped organize the fair, along with the New York City Department of Transportation’s Weekend Walks program. Alliance Executive Director Alexandra Silversmith said the fair had

a double purpose: to help ensure that local children had what they needed for school, and to promote Mermaid Avenue as a great place to shop. “We are proud to partner with our local elected officials and local businesses to give back to the community and provide essential school supplies to students while also creating a celebratory day on Mermaid Avenue, the main commercial corridor for our residents and businesses,” Silversmith said in a statement. In addition to the distribution of backpacks and school supplies, the fair also featured performances by dance groups, musicians, Zumba lessons, salsa demonstrations, face painting, art displays, free health screenings and information on job readiness programs, education opportunities and afterschool programs, according to organizers.

Diane Savino said in a statement. Savino and another Coney Island lawmaker, U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries,

helped organize the fair. “As students prepare to return to the classroom, parents are busy making sure their children have everything they need to succeed this school year. By putting everything from health screenings to backpack donations in one place, the community fair makes it easier for busy families to get their kids ready for school, all while putting a smile on everyone’s faces,” Jeffries stated. Eddie Mark, district manager of Community Board 13, was impressed with the fair, calling it a successful day. “Letting children be children before going back to school at a local community event is a wonderful thing,” he said in a statement.

tudents at a Bay Ridge Catholic school are far too young to remember the Sept. 11 terrorist attack that took place 17 years ago, long before they were born. But they are aware of the significance of that tragic day in U.S. history, according to their principal, who led the youngsters in a commemoration of the event Tuesday morning, Sept. 11. “Sept. 11 is part of our curriculum. Our teachers talk to the children in each of our classes about what happened,” Rosemarie McGoldrick, principal of Holy Angels Catholic Academy, told this newspaper as she stood in the school’s courtyard and watched approvingly as youngsters tied red, white and blue ribbons to a fence. Next to the fence where the children were carefully affixing their ribbons stood a permanent memorial to Sept. 11, a small section of a steel beam from the Twin Towers. The beam was brought

to the courtyard several years ago by the Rev. James Devlin, who was the pastor of Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church at the time. Holy Angels Catholic Academy has close ties to the church, which is located next door to the school. Holy Angels Academy is located at 337 74th St. The presence of the steel beam serves as a daily reminder to the students and to Our Lady of Angels parishioners of the sacrifices made on Sept. 11, 2001. Seventeen parishioners of Our Lady of Angels were killed in the World Trade Center that day. A plaque listing the names of the local victims is attached to the fence behind the steel beam. Teachers and students alike took part in the ribbon tying tribute on the anniversary of Sept. 11. Lake and James Riches, as well as a police officer, Moira Smith. The list also contains civilians who either worked in the World Trade Center or were there that day by chance. Barbara Habib, a senior vice president at Marsh & McLennan, worked in her company’s midtown Manhattan office but was in the firm’s office in the North Tower for a

conference when the building was struck by a hijacked jetliner. On Tuesday, Holy Angels Academy had a wreath placed in front of the steel beam. Russell Berry, the school’s social studies teacher, planned the ribbon-tying tribute and directed the children, who went up to the fence once class at a time. The memorial service started with the Rev. Jason

Espinal, the parochial vicar of Our Lady of Angels Church, leading the students and teachers in prayer. “We pray for the families of the victims. We pray for our nation,” he said. State Sen. Marty Golden, who was an altar boy at Our Lady of Angels Church when he was growing up in Bay Ridge, attended the ceremony and talked to the students about the importance of remembering Sept. 11 as the years go by and the date recedes into the distant past. At some point in the next few decades, Golden said, the students standing in the school courtyard will be the civic, business and political leaders, and will be bearing the responsibility of maintaining the country’s focus on Sept. 11. “It’s important that we never, ever forget. You are the future who will be leading this great nation. Never let these incidents happen again in our future,” Golden told the children. The ceremony ended with Espinal leading everyone in the singing of “God Bless America.”

QUIETER PLACES

Marshall LaCount’s Quieter Places paintings are a collective approach to places quieter than the city; quieter than a mind treading in traumas; quieter than political despondency. These Quieter Places are beyond certain borders. They are elsewhere, for they are not places, they are images. In this case, they are images constructed by aching hands and sore arms which have managed to pull away from other work, made in less quiet places. Plaster is shaped alongside acrylic paint, wallboard, spray paint. Graffiti and the constant buffing of graffiti get a nod. GREENWOOD HEIGHTS The neighborhood name Greenwood Heights is sometimes considered a real-estate stunt but the title was actually referred to in an 1846 Brooklyn Eagle article about a new ferry from Manhattan to the area. The article lists perks of the route including “facilities for communication with the groves of Greenwood Heights, and the lovely bay of Gowanus.” From the 19th century through the middle 20th century, the area’s economy was dominated by the working Brooklyn waterfront but the neighborhood is best known for its namesake, Green-Wood Cemetery.

The 478-acre space was commissioned in 1838 as a retreat where visitors could respect the dead and appreciate nature. Until Prospect Park was completed in 1873, the cemetery was mostly used by Brooklynites as a recreational space and as the harbor became increasingly popular, a daily stage coach shuttled visitors from the ferries to Green-Wood. Its success as a tourist attraction fueled a competition to design a public park for New York City. The winning design for “Greensward,” submitted by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux formed the basis for Central Park. Buried among Green-Wood Cemetery’s half-million graves are William Marcy (Boss) Tweed, De Witt Clinton, Lola Montez, Peter Cooper, Henry Ward Beecher, Nathaniel Currier, James Ives, Margaret Sanger and Leonard Bernstein. —Norm Goldstein

Come Stroll Fifth Avenue in Bay Ridge By Lore Croghan

INBrooklyn From convent to condos. Now that’s a study in contrasts. At the very end of Brooklyn’s Fifth Avenue, a brand-new apartment building stands on a site where nuns lived. Even if you’re too young to remember there was a convent at 401 95th St. before the Arcadia Bay Ridge condos were constructed, you’ll see another big contrast when you walk down the avenue. The glass-clad condo building is right across the street from St. Patrick’s, a yellow-brick 1920s church with a bell tower and a rose window. The Bay Ridge span of Fifth Avenue is a great place for a stroll. The logical way to take this walk is by starting at the car dealerships on the corner of 65th Street and heading south. Along the way, there’s a fascinating mix of Middle-Eastern restaurants and shops, businesses with longevity like Mike’s Donuts and the cutest canine mural ever.

Before we show you interesting sights on our north-to-south Bay Ridge trek, we first want to spotlight the avenue’s very last block, where seven-story condo building 401 95th St. is located. Condo sponsor J&J Property & Management Group LLC bought the former convent site from St. Patrick’s for $3 million in 2009, city Finance Department records show. According to a posting on website We3.com, in February the state Attorney General accepted a condo offering plan for Arcadia Bay Ridge filed by attorney Jodi B. Zimmerman of Ficara & Associates PC. There are 22 residential units, one commercial unit and 13 parking spaces. The Attorney General’s real estate finance database says the expected total sellout price is $23.637 million. The sponsor’s principals are Tak Kwong Cheung, Hing Ying Cheung, Tin Tak Cheng and Po Yung Cheng. When we checked StreetEasy.com’s posting about Arcadia Bay Ridge after our stroll, asking prices for available condos ranged from $918,000 for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment to $525,000 for a one-bedroom, one-bathroom unit.

A Pre-Civil War Parish for Catholic Soldiers

BAY RIDGE Straddled by the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and boosted over New York harbor, Bay Ridge’s history highlights how developments in transportation have reshaped Brooklyn as a whole. The Dutch West Indian Company bought the land that is now Bay Ridge from the Nyack Indians in 1652. Named Yellow Hook or Yellow Ridge for the color of the clay found there, the community pushed to rename it Bay Ridge after the yellow-fever epidemic of 1848 and1849 tainted its original name. Wealthy businessmen and industrialists visited the area as a summer retreat, building mansions on the Bay Ridge bluffs that can still be seen today. The neighborhood was transformed after power broker Robert Moses pushed construction of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, in opposition to ridge residents, 8,000 of whom were displaced for construction. The bridge has since become a neighborhood icon for the widely diverse population. See page 18INB. —Norm Goldstein

Because of the way Bay Ridge’s street grid is laid out, Fourth and Fifth avenues form a V at 95th Street and Fifth Avenue disappears. Fourth Avenue continues south to the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Because of this set-up, the Roman Catholic Church of St. Patrick has a Fourth Avenue address although it’s directly across 95th Street from Arcadia Bay Ridge on Fifth Avenue. St. Patrick’s has a storied history. It was first established as a mission in the 1840s. Back then, St. Patrick’s served as the parish for Catholic soldiers at Fort Hamilton.

The church building that preceded the present-day one was built in the early 1850s. Fort Hamilton soldiers’ donations of one dollar per week helped to pay for its construction.

A Remedy for Bald Tires and a Billiard Hall

Now let’s circle back to the northern end of Bay Ridge and take this stroll. The first spot that will catch your eye is 67 Street Tire Shop, which is in a storefront at 6702 Fifth Ave. There’s always a display of tires outside on the sidewalk.

INBrooklyn The most dazzling sight on Fifth Avenue in Greenwood Heights and Sunset Park is a graveyard’s gateway. This isn’t just any graveyard. It’s Green-Wood Cemetery, which has been a major visitor magnet pretty much since its 1838 founding. In the 19th century, New Yorkers took carriage rides, picnicked and partied in the hilly 478-acre burial ground. Though the setting around it has become urban, it still looks bucolic today. The brownstone gates — which the city landmarked in 1966 — are located at Green-Wood’s main entrance on Fifth Avenue at 25th Street in Greenwood Heights.

john designed these Gothic Revival-style arches in 1861. You’ll see them as you head south along Fifth Avenue, which is lined with mixed-use rowhouses a century old or more. Mingled in among them are financial institutions, religious buildings — and a popular hilltop recreation area that, like the neighborhood, is named Sunset Park. The park extends along Fifth Avenue from 41st to 44th streets.

The Jackie Gleason Depot

How Sweet It Is! Eleven blocks away from Green-Wood Cemetery’s gates, the first building you’ll find in Sunset Park is the Jackie Gleason Depot. It’s a 919,000-square-foot NYC Transit System building. In 1988, the MTA named it after the late comedian. He played Brooklyn bus driver Ralph Kramden in the 1950s CBSTV series “The Honeymooners.” The depot is located at 847 Architects Richard Upjohn and his son Richard Michell Up- Fifth Ave. on the corner of 36th Street. At 889 Fifth Ave. on the northeast corner of 39th Street, a curved turret is a nice touch. The building houses the Sunset Park Diner. One of Sunset Park’s grandest Fifth Avenue buildings is the former Ah, the view. the fertile soil and the waterways to their liking, acquired the land from the Canarsies and began farming along the waterfront. It became more of an urban community after Brooklyn was made a city in 1834 and developed further with the building of horse car lines and factories in the area. The neighborhood grew dramatically after Irving T. Bush bought oceanfront property and built Bush Terminal in 1895, a complex of piers, warehouses and factory lofts that created Brooklyn as a major port for shipping and made Sunset Park into a busy waterfront area. Later, the Brooklyn Army Terminal was constructed (1919) as a military ocean supply depot that operated through World War II. But the building of the Gowanus Expressway, completed in 1941, virtually cut the neighborhood off from the waterfront and workers began leaving, changing the nature of Sunset Park once again. Indeed, Sunset Park is a prime example of how Brooklyn neighborhoods change ethnically as well as geographically. It was settled by the Irish escaping the potato famine at home around 1845. Then Scandinavians settled in sections that became known as Finntown and Little Norway. Hispanics came to the neighborhood too. And now it is primarily known as the home of Brooklyn’s Chinatown. The neighborhood has Greenwood Heights to its north, Borough Park on the east, Bay Ridge to the south, and the Upper New York Bay to the west. —Norm Goldstein

The Immigrants’ Basilica Another dramatic Sunset Park property is 5424 Fifth Ave., which houses a clothing store called George Michael Suit Outlet. It’s at the intersection of 55th Street. As corner buildings with turrets go, this one’s especially charming. It’s topped by a pointy roof shaped like a witch’s hat. According to a Historic Districts Council posting, J.H. Nadigan designed the Queen Anne-style brick building, which was constructed in 1897. On the south end of Fifth Avenue in Sunset Park, there’s another dazzling sight — the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The granite Romanesque Revival church is located at 526 59th St. The property extends along Fifth Avenue to the corner of 60th Street. The basilica’s construction began in 1907. It was designed by Swissborn Franz Joseph Untersee, who settled in the Boston area and specialized in ecclesiastic architecture.

BAY RIDGE: HOW IT GOT ITS NAME By Norm Goldstein When Henry Hudson stood on the deck of the “Half Moon” (Halve Moen in Dutch) as he sailed into the harbor more than 400 years ago, he saw Staten Island to his left, and on his right, on top of a ridge on the Brooklyn shore, land that appeared to be in the shape of an owl’s head. Today, the spacious Owl’s Head Park occupies that land above Shore Road in the neighborhood called Bay Ridge in Brooklyn’s southwest. The bay, of course, is what they called the harbor in those early days. The ridge is from the elevation left by the remnants of the last ice age, millions of years ago. The water across to Staten Island now has been spanned by the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, named for the Italian Giovanni da Verrazzano who sailed the route in 1524 on his voyage of discovery. The bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world when it was completed in 1964. Bay Ridge was originally part of the town of New Utrecht and was known as Yellow Hoek, named by its Dutch settlers for the yellowish clay soil they found there. The Dutch West India Company had bought the land from the local Nyack Indians. But after an outbreak of yellow fever in the mid-19th century, the name was changed to Bay Ridge for its proximity to New York Bay and its glacial ridge, now Ridge Boulevard. Henry C. Murphy, a mayor of the City of Brooklyn, a New York State senator and founder and editor of the Brooklyn Eagle, built his estate along that ridge. The area originally attracted the wealthier residents, but after the 4th Ave. subway line (the R-train) was extended in 1915, it lured many Manhattan workers and it became more of a middleclass neighborhood. South of 86th St. is the section called Fort Hamilton, named for the military base that occupies the southernmost portion of Bay Ridge. The fort was originally called the Narrows, when it was completed in 1831, but later was renamed in honor of Alexander Hamilton. Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson and Abner Doubleday were at some time stationed at Fort Hamilton.

And They Called It Puppy Love

Our favorite commercial signage in Bay Ridge says “Oasis Vision Center” and is painted, along with evocative palm trees, on the side of the building at 7411 Fifth Ave. You can see the classic signage if you stand on the corner of Bay Ridge Parkway and turn and face north. That old Paul Anka song, “Puppy Love,” will come into your head when you get to 91st Street. As you walk south on the west side of Fifth Avenue, you’ll come face to face with larger-than-life canines on a mural. It’s painted on the side wall of Fifth Avenue Veterinary Hospital, whose address is 9102 Fifth Ave.

SUNSET PARK: HOW IT GOT ITS NAME Dutch settlers acquired portions of Sunset Park from the Canarsee Indians in the 1640s and began farming along the waterfront. Irish immigrants became the first wave of new settlers to the area in the 1840s when they were fleeing the potato famine. They were joined by Polish, Norwegian and Finnish immigrants in the late 1800s when nearly all of the neighborhood’s residential construction occurred. Sunset Park was changed forever when Irving T. Bush purchased oceanfront property and opened Bush Terminal, nicknamed “Bush’s Folly” because few thought it could compete with Manhattan’s ports. Bush’s initial warehouse, single pier, tugboat and old railroad engine paved the way for what became the largely successful 200-acre complex of piers, warehouses, display rooms and factory lofts. Italian dock workers settled in the area for the ample work from the terminal that expanded in 1902. The neighborhood eventually declined by the 1930s and into the 1940s though, when the Third Avenue elevated line halted during

the Depression and the Gowanus Expressway split the area’s industrial section from its residential. After World War II, many older residents moved to the suburbs and their homes were filled with Puerto Rican immigrants eager to work but corruption in the Federal Housing Administration and real-estate and banking industries led to abandonment of homes. In addition, much of the maritime industry began moving to New Jersey at the time. Bush Terminal was renamed Industry City in the 1960s in a revitalization attempt. Then in 1969, the Lutheran Medical Center purchased an abandoned factory from the city for one dollar and spent more than $70 million renovating the property for a center that helped local nonprofit organizations renovate 500 housing units. Sunset Park’s rebound was evident in the 1980s and 1990s when more immigrants from Latin America and Asia moved into the neighborhood. Commercial revival increased when the Brooklyn Army Terminal, which was deactivated in the 1970s, was reopened in 1987 for light industry and bodegas, restaurants and retail stores opened up along the neighborhood blocks. —Norm Goldstein

ne day after the FDNY mourned the loss of its fallen brothers during the 9/11 attacks, members had a reason to celebrate. One of their own, former FDNY Chief John Nasta, celebrated his 100th birthday on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at Sofia Restaurant in Bay Ridge, surrounded by family, friends and members of the FDNY. The smiling Brooklynborn-and-raised centenarian spent 34 years with the FDNY and retired at the rank of battalion chief of FDNY Battalion 40 at Fourth Avenue and 51st Street in Brooklyn. At the time, he was the longest serving fire officer in FDNY history. Nasta started his career with the FDNY in 1942, but after six months he was called to serve in the Navy during World War II. Because he had some training in the Fire Department, he was put in charge of training thousands of Navy recruits in fire safety while stationed in San Diego, before being

Nasta’s beloved wife Alice died in 2005. But with the support of his sister Gloria, nieces, nephews and close friends, he still maintains

an active lifestyle. “He goes out to the restaurant every day,” close friend Patricia McLaughlin Hite told this paper. “His normal

meal is linguini and clam sauce and he loves salmon. And he always has a glass of red wine. He also loves his Italian cheesecake, espresso

coffee and once a week he’ll always have his favorite hamburger.” Additionally, Hite said that Nasta enjoys easy-listening and classical music and reads The New York Times every day. And it appears that longevity runs in the family. His sister Gloria Ward, who was by his side to celebrate his birthday, is 91 years young. After a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday,” Nasta received a lifetime achievement recognition award from the FDNY commissioner’s office. Paul Mannix of the Uniformed Fire Officers Association (UFOA), presented Nasta with a plaque on behalf of the UFOA. “We’re very happy that after the sad and solemn ceremonies yesterday we are able to celebrate a life today, especially a life that has reached 100 years,” Mannix said. “Not only is he a member of the FDNY but he is a member of the greatest generation.” When asked what he attributed his own longevity to, Nasta looked up, smiled and held up his glass of red wine.

Bishop Provenzano of Episcopal Diocese Dedicates Newly Built St. Stephen-St. Martin Church

Joy and fanfare filled the streets of Bedford-Stuyvesant on Saturday and the rain held off until after the procession as the congregation of St. Stephen-St. Martin Episcopal Church in Bedford-Stuyvesant, complete with marching band, officially moved from another congregation hosting them to their own brandnew home. Varick A.M.E. Zion Church on Quincy Street had hosted the St. Stephen-St. Martin parish for several years while its church was being constructed. The old St. Stephen’s Church had stood at the corner of Patchen and Jefferson avenues for 147 years before it was demolished, in a condition beyond repair. The procession headed from Quincy Street to the new site, about six blocks away. Leading them was the Elite Marching Band of Queens. The new church, which is the brainchild of architect Shaneekua Henry and her husband Andrew, is described as “a beacon of the message of a resurrected church who meets us at all the intersections of our lives,” according to a brochure. It is also the first Episcopal church building to be constructed during the bishopric of the Rt. Rev. Lawrence Provenzano, bishop of the Diocese of Long Island. While other women clergy were pioneers in becoming the first Episcopal clergy and bishops, Henry is the first African-American woman to design a church in the diocese. The project was developed in partnership with Pericles Notias of Notias Construction of Flushing, N.Y. Henry is a partner in the African-American owned SLM Architecture. The Rev. Canon Audley Donaldson, rector of St. Stephen-St. Martin Church, said, “It is significant that parishioners decided to rebuild the church in Bedford-Stuyvesant, where it has served as a beacon of hope, and succeeded in rebuilding during a difficult economic climate. It is a remarkable achievement by the entire parish.” During the consecration service, Donaldson publicly thanked and honored several staff and parishioners. “This historic service will celebrate this

The new St. Stephen and St. Martin’s Episcopal Church building, located at 789 Jefferson Ave., has a modern theatrical lighting and sound system to enhance the worship experience. A columbarium and garden and a cry room were built into the structure. The purpose of a cry room is a safe-space for worshipers who may find themselves weeping during the liturgy. In many churches, tears are an integral part of healing and restoration. The entire church is “built and consecrated as a multi-functional, multi-cultural, multi-generational sacred space.” Members of the parish are charged to “be in tune with what ails and troubles those on the outside.” The parish’s mission is to minister to the wider community as well.

Each year, the synagogues around Brooklyn participate in the Introduction to Judaism Course taught by Rabbi Sue Oren. The 20-session course is designed as an exploration for curious adults to discover Judaism from an adult perspective, to become more conﬁdent parents of Jewish children and to explore longstanding questions they haven’t yet asked. NightShul at East Midwood Jewish Center will incorporate the Introduction to Judaism course into its regular seasonal offerings. A weekly class is offered in two sections from 7:30-9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. The course will also be offered on Sun-

days at the Park Slope Jewish Center. The first session for all participants will take place at East Midwood Jewish Center on Wednesday, Oct. 10. Advance registration is required. Although eyes and ears were ‘glued’ to television or radio throughout the borough until the ball plopped into Gil Hodges’ mitt at first base for the final putout of the 5-to-2 victory over the Braves at Milwaukee, Dodger fans settled for some whoops and hugs … Meanwhile, Borough President [John] Cashmore, in a wire to Walter F. O’Malley, the Dodger prexy, at Milwaukee Stadium, outlined plans for a gigantic ‘Brooklyn Dodger Day,” Sept. 22, just before the season’s home windup game at Ebbets Field with the Pittsburgh Pirates. There will be a big procession from Ebbets Field to Borough Hall, where the red welcome carpet will be rolled out.”

ON SEPT. 14, 1901, the Eagle reported, “Buffalo, N.Y., September 14 – President [William] McKinley died at 15 minutes after 2 o’clock this morning … The last hours of the dying President were deeply touching. In his moments of consciousness he realized his approaching end … While the cabinet officers were in the room, the President was unconscious and thought to be dying. He was rallied to consciousness shortly thereafter and almost the first word was a request that his wife be brought to his side … The parting between this devoted pair was an unwitnessed tragedy. The doctors slipped back into the shadows of the darkened room and hid their faces. Even they, used as they are to distressing scenes, could not keep back the tears. They only saw the President’s face brightening with a smile as he fully clasped his wife’s hand.”  ON SEPT. 14, 1948, the Eagle reported, “Portland, Me., Sept. 14 (U.P.) – Representative Margaret Chase Smith’s smashing majority in winning the first full Senate term ever voted a woman Republican was hailed by G.O.P. leader today as the forerunner of a Dewey-Warren landslide in November. The 49-year-old Mrs. Smith, a one-time telephone operator serving her fifth term in Congress, easily defeated Dr. Adrian H. Margaret Chase Smith Scolten, Democrat, of Portland, yesterday in the nation’s first state election of this presidential year … Mrs. Smith received personal congratulations from Gov. Thomas E. Dewey of New York in a telephone conversation at her Skowhegan home.” 

The department said the investigation is ongoing and that no additional information was available. “The ball is in their court,” Police Chief U. Renee Hall said. She acknowledged that many questions remain about the shooting and asked the public to give investigators enough time to get to the answers. “This family is frustrated. This family is upset,” said family attorney Lee Merritt. “This family is grieving that that has not happened yet,” he said of the wait for investigators to act. Hall said Friday that the officer’s blood was drawn to be tested for drugs and alcohol. Allison Jean, who has held government positions in St. Lucia, where she lives and where her son grew up, said her son’s death “just feels like a nightmare.” The island country’s government issued a statement Friday expressing “shock” at the killing and extending condolences to the Jean family. It said officials at its embassy in the U.S. would provide assistance to the family. Botham Jean attended Harding University in Arkansas and, after graduating in 2016, he had been living and working in Dallas at accounting and consulting firm PwC.
