ROTOVEGAS:
PLAYGROUND
OF
FLUX
Seeking an antidote to the authoritarian, this thesis researches into a ludic (playful) order of architectural infrastructure, one which complements the complex nature of human behaviour, favouring freedom of movement where control of the stick shift lies with the player. Integrated with existing equestrian facilities and motorways, utilitarian infrastructure of a stasis form is rethought into spaces of static and play. Carparks transform into drive-thru cinemas and skateparks, a water reservoir is repurposed into a waterpark, rotaries take cars on a looped ride, orthogonality is challenged with diagonal funiculars, petrol stations are dug up from the underground and supermarkets are animated. The architecture transforms into an amalgamation of real and imaginary spaces where playful movement is pursued. Rotovegas: Playground of Flux is a design proposition towards an architecture of play and speed, a celebration of ludic movement.

02 AKARANA
BOWLS
AND
GOLF
CLUB
A series of spaces that accommodates outdoor and indoor lawn bowling games on a site with an existing golf club. The building is designed to accommodate an additional estimated 150-200 people and be suitable to host international games. Bowlers are the primary user of the new building facilities, however the spaces do not disregard the existing golf facilities. Landscaped greens and restructuring of the existing club’s layout break up the boundary between golf and bowling spaces. The intention is to create a place for sportsman to unwind, an escape from the workplace and also create a comfortable social environment for two very differing sports.

CITY:
RECLAIMING
THE
GULLY
Auckland’s Grafton Gully is now principally a motorway route, with such a density of roading it is very difficult to cross. On one side is the University and the central city, and on the other is the Domain and the inner suburb and commercial area of Parnell. A station on the city rail link is planned in Parnell. This programme addresses the reconnection of one side of the gully with the other, essentially, with strong pedestrian linkages. This is more than a bridging task, however. A richly inhabited route is possible, with significant residential, commercial, and social functions provided to drive it functionally and economically. All of this could be achieved while preserving the motorway and road functions in the gully. It would require significant design intervention at a variety of scales.

RIVERFRONT
MARKET
Rivers have long been regarded as a place for habitation for mankind as it traditionally provides the necessities of water, food and transportation. However, rivers in the contemporary setting have lost their purpose and have become inactive green spaces or unattractive channels for waste. The design proposal of a public marketplace is aimed to revitalize the Avon River by improving its accessibility and relationship to the Christchurch CBD .The conceptual driver involves the notion of “filtration”, the undulating roofs evokes the notion of circulation and rainwater flow, mirroring the river’s context, creating a recreational space filled with kinetic energy.

05 MOTUIHE
ISLAND
RESEARCH
CENTRE
An Education Research Centre (ERC) on Motuihe Island to accommodate visitors to the island, consisting of students, researchers and volunteers who wish to be involved in activities related to the rehabilitation of native flora and fauna. The design approach gave emphasis towards served and servant spaces. Contrasting materials of smooth timber and rough concrete were used to distinguish programmatic values of these spaces. Frosted patterned glass panels create a playful take on light and shadow. Whilst composting toilets and solar panels were integrated as part of the sustainable approach to the centre.

TRAIL:
ERUPTION
In conjunction with Rugby World Cup 2011, students were sought to create a series of installations across Myer’s Park as part of the Fain trail route that leads visitors towards the stadium. The collaborative installation, ‘Eruption’ takes notions from Auckland’s volcanic heritage, evoking an explosive and volatile experience. As a group of four, the design is synonymous to white volcanic fumes that emerge from its container to infest the further extents of the site. Fabricated with lightweight fabric, wooden structural framing, ventilation fans and fluorescent lights, the creature comes to life and interacts with its passing visitors.
