The 2022 World Cup will be one of the most compact in the tournament’s history. All stadiums are within a 35 mile radius of Doha. From the northern Host City Al Khor to the southern Al Wakrah, the maximum distance is 46 miles, just over a 1 hour drive.

Unlike past tournaments, those attending the tournament can base themselves in one hotel and attend matches in all the different host stadiums without having to fly between cities or take overnight trips. It’s a dream for spectators. Adding to the experience are the incredible venues (all complete with cooling systems to combat the desert heat), most of which are being built specifically for the World Cup.

2022 World Cup Venues Host City: Al Khor, Al Bayt Stadium Located about 55 kilometers (35 miles) north of Doha, Al Khor is a coastal city with an abundance of beaches, parks, and mangrove forests. It’s a smaller city but offers plenty for visitors to enjoy. The seafront corniche makes for a scenic walk and the popular Purple Island is a wonderful conservation area worthy of exploration. Currently under construction, Al Bayt Stadium will be one that is truly unique. The entire structure will be covered by a giant tent, reminiscent of those historically used by nomadic peoples in the region. While it serves as a nod to Qatar’s past, it also looks forward to the future. The top level of the stadium will be portable and donated to a developing nation after the World Cup. With seating for 60,000, Al Bayt Stadium is one of the larger stadiums in the tournament and will host one of the semi-final matches.
Host City: Al Rayyan, Al Rayyan Stadium Al Rayyan is a city that is passionate about sports, particularly soccer. While it’s technically the second largest city in Qatar, it’s actually considered part of the Doha metropolitan area and close to all of Doha’s attractions including great museums, world-class shopping, heaps of restaurants, and plenty of cultural sites and attractions. The new Al Rayyan Stadium is currently being built on the site of the city’s Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium and will be home to the beloved Al Rayyan SC soccer team. Like many of the other 2022 World Cup stadiums, Al Rayyan Stadium is being built in a modular design with sustainability in mind. Though the stadium will house 40,000 seats for the tournament, many of those will later be removed and donated to other projects.

The impressive new Al Thumama Stadium is currently under construction and expected to be completed in 2020. Designed to resemble a gahfiya (the traditional Arabian woven headwear worn by males), the stadium will seat 40,000 for World Cup matches, though 20,000 of those seats will be removed following the tournament and donated to developing countries. Khalifa International Stadium is one of only two existing stadiums that will serve as a venue for the 2022 World Cup. Built in 1976, the 40,000-seat stadium has undergone a number of improvements since. Most recently, an extensive renovation was completed in 2017 that included the addition of a state-of-the-art cooling system to ensure both spectators and players are comfortable for the World Cup matches. Education City Stadium, along with a metro line that will connect it to the rest of the city, is being built in Doha’s Education City area, home to several University campuses. filter and reflect light, designed to represent a diamond in the desert. The 40,000-seat venue is scheduled to open in 2019. Ras Abu Aboud Stadium will be the first fully dismountable stadium to serve as a World Cup host venue. As an incredible example of sustainable infrastructure, the stadium will be constructed in a modular format which will allow it to later be transported and reassembled in a different location or even converted into smaller structures. For the 2022 World Cup, the stadium will be located on the waterfront with views of Doha’s West Bay skyline.
Host City: Lusail, Lusail Stadium Lusail is a planned city that’s still in development, approximately 15 kilometers (10 miles) north of Doha. The impressive design for the city includes marinas, manmade islands, parks, residential areas, luxury shopping, golf courses, and a number of entertainment districts. Once construction is complete Lusail will be home to approximately 250,000 residents. One of the city’s main attractions will be Lusail Stadium, a 80,000-seat venue that will be the main venue for the 2022 World Cup. Surrounded by a moat, the exterior the stadium will represent sails of a traditional dhow boat. Inside the stadium has been designed to have the entire pitch shaded, with a cooling system to maintain ideal temperatures. National teams will continue to play qualifiers until spring of 2022. Once all the qualifying teams have been determined, the World Cup draw will take place (expected date: April 2022) to decide the eight groups of four teams who will play each other in the group stage. The top two teams from each group will continue on to the knockout stage, culminating with the World Cup Final at Lusail Stadium on December 18th. The match times will be finalized after the draw to optimize the schedule for fans, players, and the media.
