(Back)out to sea In recent months, we’ve all missed traveling. Even though things may still be uncertain, the improved health conditions in many countries and experienced on board, enable us to think a bit more about distant destinations. From the Far North to the White Continent, from the shores of the Caribbean to Polynesian lagoons and the big blue ocean – the sea will act a link in 2021 between different lands and different people. The sea is a living, breathing force. It is powerful, overwhelming, and has many faces. But it is fragile too. That is why we are committed to helping you explore its wealth of horizons in an eco-friendly way. Le Commandant Charcot, the first hybrid-powered polar exploration vessel, set to hit the waves in a few months, is the culmination of this. It is also a testament to how we see the cruises of the future. It will of course be completely safe, having been adapted to the situation. It will also be meaningful, because you are not just going on a journey at random. At PONANT, it is synonymous with permanent rebirth, which is a philosophy that we want to share with you throughout the coming months. So more than ever, we’re happy to say: "See you soon on board".
1
Sail with total peace of mind Your safety and health, as well as that of our crews, is our top priority. Faced with an unprecedented health crisis, we have implemented a strict health protocol, which meant we were the first cruise company in the world to return to sea in July 2020. As advances in the world of vaccination progress, PONANT is optimising its already robust protocol with a two-level approach: getting the crew vaccinated in order to secure a work bubble on board; encouraging guests to get vaccinated to protect them and ensure the best possible experience. To date, the vaccine remains optional for anyone who boards. A crew member or a guest who has been vaccinated, and has proven it before the trip and during the test check before boarding, does not have to take the Covid tests (PCR and antigen tests). Additionally, all the other measures are still in force. A person is considered vaccinated if they have received two injections (with 15 days in between), less than six months before the start of the cruise.
PONANT – setting an example The French flag is considered to be one of the safest symbols of approval in the world. PONANT is the only cruise ship company to fly it, a pledge of environmental quality, ship safety and the upholding of social legislation. The fleet is monitored by the PACA Corse Ship Safety Centre located in Marseille, as well as by the CSN located in Caen. Our safety equipment is checked and approved annually by the French government. Each vessel is ISM (International Safety Management) certified, a very strict international regulation. Bureau Veritas regularly certifies the entire PONANT fleet and has validated the health and safety protocol implemented by the Company.

Since the start of the Covid crisis, several cruises that I had booked have been cancelled mostly due to border closures. Thanks to the very beneficial price policies PONANT implemented, it was easy for me to postpone my trips. I was able to change to departures in the summer and autumn of 2021 instead. Geneviève D.
I was very cautious about booking a new cruise in 2021. It was hard to see myself going anywhere. But now there’s a vaccine, I feel confident again and hope to be able to go on one soon. Also, PONANT was able to adapt their commercial policy to these uncertain and constantly evolving circumstances. I’m relieved to know that if I had to cancel my trip a few days before departure due to the virus, I wouldn’t lose the money I invested in my cruise. Jean M.

From the nearest lands to the furthest reaches Certain journeys transcend us. Through them, we are no longer just passengers but enlightened travellers. With Le Commandant Charcot, step into the history of polar exploration and push the boundaries of the known world. With 30 years of experience navigating in extreme regions, we now invite you to experience journeys never before offered on board our extreme latitudes polar exploration vessel. The only one of its kind in the world, it features many innovations, overcoming immense technological challenges while providing luxurious comfort. The sailing schedule and any landings, activities and wildlife viewing are subject to weather and ice conditions. These experiences are unique and vary with each departure. The commander and the expedition leader will do their utmost to ensure that your experience is as rich as possible, while respecting safety instructions and regulations.
14
Brand new spaces Le Commandant Charcot has spaces that have never been seen before in the PONANT fleet, such as: • a giant firepit on deck 9, so you can enjoy the polar landscapes in complete comfort;
•
the Blue Lagoon, an outdoor heated lagoon with a temperature that ranges from 27 to 37°C using recycled energy from the ship;
• •
a sunroom with large external-facing windows;
•
a Snow Room – a fun and invigorating snow bath you can try out after leaving the sauna;
• •
a smoking room;
•
an uninterrupted outdoor promenade deck. This means you can walk around the entire ship and get to the bow, unlike most passenger ships.
a heated indoor swimming pool with a superb skylight thanks to its large glass roof;
a meeting room for briefings before departing on expeditions;
These spaces were designed by two worldrenowned French architectural firms: the Studio Jean-Philippe Nuel and Wilmotte & Associés, whose design brief was to create a real connection with the surrounding landscapes.
Exceptional suites and staterooms On board, there are 135 suites and staterooms, ranging in size from 20 to 115 m2, providing warm, understated settings that look out onto the outside world. Each has a private balcony or terrace. Le Commandant Charcot has unique suites that none of the other ships has in the PONANT fleet, such as the Duplex suites: 94 m2 spread over two levels, and 24 m2 of terrace. The Owner's suite is one of a kind and is designed as a private apartment of 115 m2 that opens onto 180 m2 of terrace with a jacuzzi.
Haute cuisine in extreme environments In both the far north and the lower latitudes of the White Continent, enjoy the most delicate of dishes on your table. Each day, enjoy a different, varied menu at the gourmet restaurant or at the Blue Lagoon restaurant with its outdoor terrace.
15
Hybrid propulsion never before seen in a polar environment Equipped with hybrid electric power generation, Le Commandant Charcot has several propulsion modes, including:
• Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), which reduces the emission of carbon (-25%), nitrogen oxide (-85%) and fine particles (-95%). It is the only ship in the world table to rely on a two-month supply of LNG. • The largest battery bank a cruise ship has ever been fitted with, optimising its energy consumption and giving it over an hour of battery life per day that is completely silent and emissionfree.
Sailing in the ice: a technological feat As the first luxury cruise ship capable of sailing to the highest southern and northern latitudes, Le Commandant Charcot is the only passenger ship with a PC2 class hull. This enables it to venture into channels that are inaccessible to others and, if necessary, to maintain a pace of up to 2 knots in 2.5 metres of old ice. With the help of the French company Adrena, we have developed routing software that is the only one of its kind in the world. This navigation aid is invaluable when it comes to taking the most energy-efficient and safest routes.
Innovation in the service of safety Le Commandant Charcot has the most powerful azipods (360° propulsion units) in the world, enabling it to go forward or backward. This means the ship has a power reserve which guarantees both safety and exceptional manoeuvring capacities in ice. The Polar Code requires us to be self-sufficient in ice for five days if necessary. Therefore we have developed our own emergency equipment (survival kits, food, polar suits and shelters, etc.), which is a first in the market.
A vessel of scientific opportunity Le Commandant Charcot is the only French polar class PC2 ship. We have equipped it with polar research laboratories to provide unprecedented support for academic research by accommodating scientists on board. Travellers will be able to participate in experiments (sampling of weather data, ice, water, etc.) that will help advance international research in furthering our knowledge of the poles.

HIGHLIGHTS: • Being one of the few people in the world to have sailed to the geographic North Pole! • Zodiac® outings and landings with naturalist guides. • The option of hiking.
Latitude: 90° north! The objective of this unique cruise – the geographic North Pole, a legendary location covered with pack ice all year round, 700 km from any land surface, which has fascinated generations of explorers and which very few people have been able to get to thus far. Departing from Spitsbergen, and sailing in the midst of exquisite landscapes that are constantly changing dependent on the light and the movement of the ice is ideal for seeing a wealth of wildlife at this time of year. Le Commandant Charcot will then begin to advance through the pack ice towards the Holy Grail of any polar explorer – the North Pole! But beware, the ice floes are constantly drifting, so you have to keep moving to stay on the northernmost point of our planet.
• The landscapes, including pack ice, icebergs, ice caps and more. In Spitsbergen, there are jagged mountains, deep valleys, sheer walls and gigantic glaciers. • The wildlife, including polar bears, arctic foxes, Svalbard reindeer, arctic terns, seals, walruses and whales. • Lots of unforgettable activities such as hovercrafting, hiking, snowshoeing, kayaking, etc.

Sail to the sea of Bellingshausen, beyond the Peter I and Charcot islands and the Antarctic polar circle. Named in honour of the Russian admiral and explorer who discovered the White Continent in 1820, it is covered with pack ice most of the year. As it is hard to get to, it still remains virtually unexplored today. But the rewards make the challenge worth it, because in a location that no one has access to at this season, live gigantic colonies of emperor penguins, an endemic species from Antarctica that is almost never seen. Like true explorers of almost unknown lands, you will get to see thousands of these birds, and feel all the sensations of a first encounter. In this season, as winter gradually gives way to the southern spring, the little ones (who are just a few weeks old) gain their independence and gather in huge “crèches”, a truly magical spectacle which you will be one of the few witnesses to.

Impassable, extreme, bewitching – all words that aptly describe the Weddell Sea, a sea that is mostly frozen and full of thick and compressed pack ice. Sailing here is a challenge as well as a privilege, promising extraordinary landscapes and unique encounters. As you advance over this immense polar expanse, you enter an endless frozen desert, a world of silence where all seems calm and serene. Northwest of the Weddell Sea, stretching along the eastern coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, stands the towering ice barrier, also known as the Larsen Ice Shelf. An extension of the sea ice sheet, this white giant is as troubling as it is fascinating, if only for its titanic size and the impressive tabular icebergs it generates – among the largest ever observed. This trip is also an opportunity to get as close as possible to the creatures of the Weddell Sea, which is a true refuge for wildlife.
• The wildlife, including Weddell seals, crabeater and leopard seals, Adélie penguins, humpback whales, and sea birds. • Lots of unforgettable activities such as hovercrafting, hiking, snowshoeing, kayaking, etc.

Experience a unique and spectacular voyage. That’s just what we are promising with this cruise in the heart of the White Continent. Venture beyond the Antarctic Circle to watch a total solar eclipse from the pack ice in the Weddell Sea, the only place in the world where it will be 100% visible. The eastern part of this same sea remains completely unknown to this day. Extreme and bewitching, the Weddell Sea is mostly frozen solid, with thick and compressed pack ice. Sailing here is a challenge as well as a privilege. In this infinite desert of ice, you will have the opportunity to get up close to the imposing Larsen Ice Shelf, an extension of the ice sheet into the sea. This fascinating place is the birthplace of gigantic tabular icebergs, which are among the largest in the world. This grandiose spectacle is reinforced by the silence of Antarctica broken only by the movements of the ice or the many animals that have found refuge there. 20

Getting to Peter I Island is like landing on the moon! This image illustrates the extreme difficulty of getting to this small volcanic island located in the Bellingshausen Sea, 450 km from the Antarctic coast, where only a few people have landed, much like the number of astronauts who have walked on the moon’s surface. Discovered in February 1821, nobody was able to land on Peter 1 Island until 1929 as the ice front made the approach and landing difficult. To this day, nobody has climbed to the summit. This unique itinerary is also a good opportunity to visit Charcot Island, named by Commander Charcot in memory of his father when it was discovered in 1910. We will take you on the trail of this emeritus explorer and scientist, who made French expeditions so renowned. It is also an opportunity to understand the importance of researching and understanding these remote locations so we can face the challenges of tomorrow.

Partly occupied by the Ross Barrier, the largest ice shelf in Antarctica, this immense bay located a few hundred kilometres from the South Pole, is considered "the last ocean", the last intact marine ecosystem and the largest marine sanctuary in the world since 2016. Here, the cold is more intense, the wind blows harder, the ice is more impressive, and the landscapes are more spectacular... In the heart of this polar Garden of Eden, where the ice shelf slowly transforms into icebergs, you will encounter a wealth of wildlife, as well as surreal landscapes. On the edge of the Arctic, the land of "fire and ice" has a wild side as well as a romantic side. The northernmost capital in the world, Reykjavik, has a very distinctive atmosphere. It’s a welcoming place and it’s culturally rich. Just look at its Contemporary Art Museum for example, which is famous for its collections by the postmodern artist Erró. Once the capital is behind you, you’ll be enthralled by the incredible landscapes everywhere. First you’ll be heading to the bay of Grundarfjörður, very close to Kirkjufell, a majestic conical mountain with unique charm. Grímsey is a small island that is hard to get to, full of volcanic landscapes and lots of birds, such as murres and puffins. Then it’s time to visit the impressive fjords, such as Eyjafjörður or Isafjörður, dotted with charming villages. And last but not least, head for Heimaey, the only inhabited island in the Vestmannaeyjaraeyjar archipelago. Norwegian Sea HIGHLIGHTS:
Improve your knowledge of Iceland during this unique tour. After leaving the bustle of Reykjavik, which is home to twothirds of the Icelandic population, you will set sail for Heimaey, the only inhabited island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago, an exceptional place full of volcanoes and almost desert-like landscapes where the people live mainly by fishing. Next you will see a succession of breath-taking panoramas such as the bay of Grundarfjörður, very close to Kirkjufell, a conical mountain, and the picturesque villages of Ísafjörður, Djúpavík and Siglufjörður. This small port, founded in the 10th century, is famous for herring fishing. Surrounded by rocky mountain slopes, it is closer to the Arctic Circle than to Reykjavik. Then set sail for Grímsey, a small volcanic island that is difficult to get to. This is truly the kingdom of the birds, such as murres and puffins. In Akureyri, the capital of northern Iceland, you will get a chance to admire the Eyafjörður fjord. Then you will head to the south via Hornafjörður, in the Vatnajökull National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and via the Jökulsarlon glacier lagoon, with splendid landscapes that look like they’re petrified by ice.
• Discovering the local food and customs, and Icelandic fishing traditions. • The option of excursions to the Skalanes nature reserve and discovering the Jökulsarlon Glacial Lagoon and Diamond Beach. • The landscapes, including vast glaciers, dizzying fjords, volcanic plateaus, basalt columns, jagged cliffs, geysers, waterfalls, lava fields, caves, lakes, icebergs, the glacial lagoon and black sand beaches. • The wildlife, including northern gannets, arctic terns, minke whales, humpback whales, killer whales, dolphins, porpoises, and Icelandic horses. • The optional Reykjavik tour with its many cultural treasures, including the Museum of Contemporary Art. • The Kid's Club on the 28 July and 4,6,13 and 20 August with activities designed for 4-17 year-olds, supervised by a qualified activity leader.

SOUTH GEORGIA Weddell Sea
ANTARCTIC PENINSULA The best way to understand the power of Antarctica is to follow the changing landscapes as you sail. The green of the lush grassy moorland dominates the scenery initially in the Falkland Islands. Next comes South Georgia with its glaciers and black sand beaches, home to imposing colonies of king penguins. Finally, the peninsula of the famous White Continent, which is actually much more complex than a simple shade of immaculate white. There is white everywhere of course, but it’s never quite the same hue. There are intermingled shades of sometimes blue, sometimes grey, and sometimes a romantic pink, that mingle together on both sea and land. Here nothing is like anything you have ever seen before, and all of it is surprising. Depending on the weather and ice conditions, this extreme environment is full of fabulous secrets, such as immense landscapes, between endless ice floes, glaciers and snow-capped mountains, or incredible wildlife. Now we’re touching on the purpose of the trip. It goes beyond simply being enchanted, it’s all about a sharper awareness of the world around us. 30

We’re inviting you to experience a unique journey, sailing to Antarctica from New Zealand, via the Sub Antarctic Islands. You will follow in the footsteps of great polar explorers, like James Clark Ross who discovered the Ross Sea in 1841, or Sir Ernest Shackleton whose cabin, built during the third British expedition at the Ross Sea (1907-1909), testifies to the courage of these adventurers to the White Continent. This trip is the perfect opportunity to look in wonder at the exceptional natural landscape, and the unspoilt flora and fauna of the Sub Antarctic Islands, where the sound of the wind rustles through the meadows of megaherbs, mingling with the cries of sea birds. You’ll get a chance to wonder at the many species of penguins, Weddell seals and elephant seals that await you. Sail over the Ross Sea among colossal icebergs and listen to the creaking of calving glaciers.

HIGHLIGHTS: • A cruise in the Mediterranean to visit some of its most beautiful islands, including Elba Island, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and Malta.
"I was crazy about the sun and obviously I adored the sea and above all the Mediterranean itself", wrote Jean d´Ormesson. A great lover of Corsica in particular, the French academician longed to relax on the Île de Beauté, admired the landscapes sculpted by the wide blue sea, and the ruins left as a legacy by the Greek and Roman civilisations. This itinerary is perfect for enjoying all the charms France, Italy and Malta have to offer. There is one historical site after another: Portoferraio, where Napoleon spent many days in exile, PortoVecchio overlooked by its 16th century Genoese citadel, Palermo, its 12th century cathedral and the Massimo theatre – one of the largest in Europe – or the prestigious ancient city of Syracuse, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Throughout the trip, the cultural dimension is inextricably mixed with the natural beauties of these islands. Corsica’s beaches lapped by limpid waters respond to the panoramas that Catania offers from Etna. Until the cruise ends at Valletta, each stopover is an opportunity to take advantage of this subtle alliance between cultural discoveries and the joys of the Mediterranean way of life.
• A cruise to discover the wonders of the Tyrrhenian Sea. • UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Syracuse and the rocky necropolis of Pantalica, Arab-Norman Palermo and the cathedrals of Cefalú and Monreale, and Valletta. • The island of Elba and Portoferraio, where Napolean lived in exile. • The Kid's Club, with activities dedicated to 4-17 year olds, supervised by a qualified entertainer.

Certain cruises just tell you summer’s here. They lull us with their balmy atmosphere and the promise of cultural discoveries and pure relaxation. This itinerary is a wonderful example of this. The tone is set from the very first stopover. From Nafplion, you get the option to visit two major Greek sites: the ruins of Mycenae and the theatre of Epidaurus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Paros then offers a real blend of Greek beauty, with whitewashed houses, olive groves and ancient monuments, just like Mykonos with its characteristic windmills and pleasant beaches. After visiting Patmos, the "Jerusalem of the Aegean Sea" which is where you will find the monastery of Saint John, head to Kusadasi, in Turkey, to enjoy a brand new day relaxing in limpid waters. A former fishing village with a 5,000-year history, not far from the site of Ephesus, the town is now one of the most famous seaside resorts in the country. Close to the Dardanelles Strait, the volcanic island of Limnos is an opportunity to sample the real Greece, its healthy and sun-kissed local food, and to enjoy some time lounging, before heading Istanbul, the end of this idyll in the Aegean Sea.

ROSYTH (Edinburgh) UNITED KINGDOM From Scotland to Iceland, the three isolated archipelagos in the North Atlantic exude a certain kind of magic. The Shetland Islands and the ruins of Scalloway Castle, built in 1600, keep the mystery alive. Kirkwall, the capital of the Orkney archipelago, feels so genuine with its cathedral of pink stones and its whisky distillery. The archipelago is also famous for the sea birds that make it their home. The Faroe Islands are an opportunity to immerse yourself in the heart of a wild, volcanic natural landscape, where countless birds and sheep thrive. From the sea, there are so many ways to view these fascinating landforms from prime angles. The Vestmannaeyjar Islands are the last bulwark before Reykjavik. In Heimaey, the only inhabited island in the archipelago, time seems suspended between a life of fishing and the volcanic landscapes. 42

"I love Brittany, that’s where I find a sense of wildness and primitiveness. When my clogs echo on this granite landscape, I hear the dull, heavy and powerful sound that I seek in painting". At the end of the 1880s, Paul Gauguin succumbed to the beauty of this natural, unspoilt region. It may not be Polynesia – another province dear to the painter – but it possesses equally exotic charms. You’ll find proof of this among the Ponant islands, the symbol of our company, in the diversity of the wild plants and the pink granite rocks on the island of Bréhat, the crystal clear waters of the Glénan archipelago or the Pointe des Poulains, an uninhabited peninsula that rises stark against the sky at the north-western end of Belle-Île-en-Mer! These islands conceal panoramas of unspoilt beauty. Eroded shale cliffs, caves, fine sandy beaches and heather moorland provide lots of landscapes that are ideal for exploration. The Tas de Pois, six rocks rising from the waves, definitely merits sailing around. At the sight of these rocky cliffs, we understand exactly why lighthouses are needed – the tireless sentries whose concentration, in Brittany, is the highest in the world.
