Natàlia Catalan
Hi! I’m Natàlia Catalan, and I’m currently studying Industrial design, engineering and Product design at Elisava, the Barcelona School of Design and Engineering. I consider myself an active, hardworking and cooperative person. Teamwork is not an issue, in fact, I believe it is an excellent way of working if all the team members are aligned towards the same goal. I believe that participating in an exchange program and to study abroad in Australia for some months is an excellent way to become more independent, learn about new cultures, new ways of working and meet new interesting people with a different mentality from mine while you practice and perfect english.

Barcelona equestrian challenge The Barcelona Equestrian Challenge is an ambitious project, an initiative of the Barcelona City Council and the Real Club de Polo de Barcelona (RCPB), to promote the equestrian world in Barcelona. One of the promotional activities they organize is the design of a horse jump for the CSIO Barcelona, one of the most important equestrian competitions in the world. The objective of the challenge was to create a jump inspired in Barcelona’s culture or architecture, without forgetting some specific and technical requests. An initial screening of projects was done to select the top 7, out of thirty, that would have been presented in front of a jury. Our project, called “Jumping Miro’s city”, was born as a mixture between Barcelona’s skyline, and Miro’s iconic style, so it contained both cultural and architectural aspects. It was one of the selected projects, but it proved to be the winning project.

The jump was built at RCPB carpentry and presented to the media after we had checked all the work done, and designed all the vinyls in real-life size. The result was incredible, and it was amazing being able to see, for the fist time, something you have designed constructed in real life. The resulting jump was used in the CSIO Barcelona competition.

Biomimicry gobal design challenge This project was created to participate in the Biomimicry Global Design Challenge, an international contest for professionals and students. The main requests were to create a system inspired by how nature works as well as creating something helpful for the environment that promotes a healthy lifestyle. The final product was a vegetable garden system for families that live in Barcelona. We wanted to create a product that facilitates the work of cultivating the maximum amount possible in an urban context, incorporating an innovative biomimetic irrigation system that allows not only to reduce the time spent but also the water supply needed, which implies a water saving. Furthermore, the seed system, also inspired by nature, allows simplicity for children and also prevents weeds growing.

Active structure The chair project consisted in designing and constructing a chair using plywood 1 cm thick. The basic requests of the projects were that the chair must be able to support the weight of a person, it must be stable, it couldn’t contain fixing elements and it must be as simple as possible. A really important aspect to take into account was the sizes of the different parts of the chair, the hips had to fit comfortably, the feet must touch the ground and the knees the seat. The angle between the seat and the backrest had to be at least 90° tilted slightly upward.

As the chair couldn’t contain fixing elements such as screws or nails, but it had to be secure, a special piece of wood was needed to ensure that the chair didn’t self-disassemble. This part of the chair is probably the most important one, and in this case are the orange pieces placed on both sides of the chair. The final product was constructed using a milling machine, so it was essential to elaborate accurate plans of each part of the chair. A significant amount of polishing was needed to make all the pieces fit.

Briefing and development In this project, the idea was to create a table lamp. It was an open project where each student was able to choose all the important aspects that define a design, the users, the place to be used, the use of it, and all the technical aspects. So once the briefing was chosen, each of us had to create a table lamp for that particular user. In this project the briefing chosen was a table lamp for teenage girls, between 12 and 18 years old. It was an extremely complete exercise because we had to make and write our studies, build the lamp, justify all the decisions and elaborated a budget.

Semanthic relation This exercise consisted of designing and constructing a letter opener, cutting, carving and folding an aluminium sheet 1.5 mm thick. To be able to communicate correctly how to use the letter opener, one should carry out an accurate analysis, not only of the object, but also about its use and ergonomics. Any old sheet of metal can be used to open a letter, so one of the most important requests was to give it volume and an intuitive form to the object, to communicate how to use the letter opener appropriately. Sketches and fine cardboard models were done to evaluate which was the best option, the most communicative and simple one.

Each student constructed his own letter opener in the workshop, cutting the aluminium sheet with metal scissors, polishing it, and giving it the appropriate shape, in this case using a folding machine. Finally the desired finish was added to the letter opener, mattifying the long part, and leaving the subjection area with the original aluminium characteristics.

Analysis of an exhibition The objective of this project was to analyse one of the main exhibitions of DHUB, the Design Museum of Barcelona; Dressing the Body. The analysis done included the study of everything involving the exhibition, the illumination, the showcases, the materials, the leitmotif of the exhibition, etc. We were asked to present the analysis in front of the curators of the exhibition, who were very interested in how the exhibition was perceived by the public, and what were the problematic points from our point of view.

Active union Active union, consisted in handling a sheet of white polypropylene 0.8 mm thick, a lamp, a light bulb and the corresponding electrical installation to achieve a volume illuminated from the inside. The main objective was to explore the possibilities offered by the material, and how could be a volume done, respecting the essential characteristics of the polypropylene, flexibility and translucency, without using fixing elements and hiding the bulb. Paper and fine cardboard models were essential, as they are really easy to manipulate, to think of many shapes as possible and to find the definitive one.

Adults memory and synesthesia This exercise consisted of thinking, designing and constructing a product that involves the concepts adults, memory and synesthesia. Firstly, a complete study was done in order to specify the exact meaning of the term synesthesia. Then, all the concepts were united to make a product that helps Alzheimer’s patients communicate with their relatives easily and using the sounds as a communication code. Antropometric measures and the main Alzheimer’s symptoms were taken into account in order to make the product as comfortable as possible for the user. A document, a publicity video and the product itself had been created for the presentation of the project in fornt of the teacher and two Elisava’s Reserch workers, who gave us interesting feedback and tips.

Space design This project consisted in redesigning a kitchen. Firstly an accurate study of the users, their hobbies, lifestyle and customs were done to establish the most appropriate style for the new kitchen. Then, all the necessary electricity, general distribution, gas and water plans were made to explain all the modifications done in the kitchen. To prove that we took into account the user and their requirements, we had to develop a complete budget list to ensure that it met the user’s budget. Finally a render of the final project was done using Rinoceros program.

Product redesign projects In this part of the portfolio you are going to see some redesign project. All of them are based on a real product that could be modified to improve its usage, material, etc. The first project consisted in redesigning a non-eco-friendly product, transforming it to another that could be used for the same but respecting the environment. In this case, the small balls of expanded polystyrene used to fill the boxes to protect the product inside, were replaced for small bags of air, which are recyclable, and they guarantee the same protection.

In this project the objective was to analyse an object that we think is not working well, and it’s not well resolved and consider some options to improve it. Nail polish was the object chosen, and the redesign proposals were; a membrane to control the amount of nail polish taken, a spring that allows the brush to reach to the bottom of the container when there is little product and an ergonomic cap.

This project consisted in redesigning the packaging of a game to make it more sustainable and eco-friendly. The game chosen was Trivial Party, and with the final design, we were able to reduce 98.5% of plastic, reduce 54.9% of energy used and reduce 69.4% the CO 2 emissions.

Interiorism Plans Some of the projects done during those two years at university, needed some plans to explain the work done. The plans presented on this page consist in the ones done for the project presented before, the redesign of a kitchen. Firstly, we can find the plan of the future kitchen furniture, on the other page the electricity and the general plans. All of them had been created with AutoCAD program.
