about me

Hi! I’m Natàlia Catalan, a graduate in Industrial Design Engineering and Product Design at Elisava, Barcelona’s School of Design and Engineering. I studied a double degree as I consider these two bachelors extremely connected and related between them. Each one depends from the other and they cannot live apart, one is the functionality and the other the aesthetics. Together they create a perfect combination between the Ying and the Yang. I consider myself an active, hardworking, optimistic and cooperative person. Teamwork is not an issue, in fact, I believe it is an excellent way of working if all the team members are aligned towards the same goal. I am a person who likes to know and learn. Precisely for this reason, I absolutely love the design, each project is an opportunity to learn about a new topic. I love oral communication, being able to talk to people, learn from them, knowing their points of view and being able to help by contributing with new ideas or concepts.

During my university studies, I had the opportunity to stay in Australia for six months, studing at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), and it was an excellent way to become more independent, learn about new cultures, new ways of working and meet new interesting people with a different mentality from mine as well as a way of practice and perfect my english. Once again in Barcelona, I did a 6 months internship in the company Tandem - a design and innovation consultancy- and one year internship at Tous Jewelry, before start working full-time there as a Jewelry Developer Technitian. Jewels bend excellently with the double bachelor I coursed as the aesthetics and design are crucial, but behind the glamourosity of these, complex and technical production processes are essential to bring the designs into reality.

dewit Final degree project in Industrial Design Engineering and Product Design

Tutors: Ana Maria del Corral Martín Azúa

Dewit is my final degree project in collaboration with Quadpack, a creative company that develops innovative packagings for cosmetics. The challenge proposed by the company was to design a packaging solution that add value in the context of the following scenario: year 2030, users’ age 50-75, focus on sustainability, possible focus on technological product (package + formula + added value). The project resulted in an ergonomic applicator that allows the user customize their daily and night skincare routine all in one, by using different types of vitamins depending on their needs and providing an easy application.

As the product had to be thought to be on the market in 2030, an analysis and selection of the most important trends for 2030 was done, presented and organized into a three-axis map based on the plans in which they were located and the importance and projection they will have in the future. This helped define the most significative trends and the ones that would affect the final product.

Ideation Phase Sketching

The technical part of Dewit was quite complex. Vacuume valves were designed to protect the interior formulas as well as dosify the correct amount of product. The initial ideas for these valves were expressed with drawings, and sketches of various possible solutions.

Ideation Phase Mock ups

Implementation Phase 3D, Renders and Contextualization

To defdine the optimal shape for the product, multimple polyurethane foam mockups were elaborated in order to test the different shapes. After a study of the ergonomy for each one of the shapes, a specific shape was created by combining the best qualities of each mockup.

As a final stage, 3D files and renders were elaborated in order to create a realistic image of the product in its context, a 2030 bathroom. This pictures help completing the full image we have of the product as well as see if the product itself matches the environment that surrounds it.

For this project we worked in collaboration with Aplimet for the design of an innovative beer tap system. Aplimet is a small company that aims to be a referent in the industry as they have technology, innovation, quality and personalisation as a flag. The brief by the company could be outlined as: A multitap modular system which makes the beer pouring experience confortable and integrates new technologies always respecting the traditional way of pouring beer.

Ideation Phase Sketchin and brainstorming of ideas.

The objective was to create an intuitive system, easy to use and mount and thought for the confort of the waiter, of the customer and of the person in charge of repairing. The inital drawings investigate different ways to set and hold the beer taps, and opened different paths to follow. These paths were investigated until the definition of a concept and a closed idea.

On the implementation phase, where the product needed to be defined and all the pieces put together, the technical requirements were defined and solved and, even though the shape of Tilt might not look anything alike a regular beer tap, all beer mechanisms used were standard, so we didn’t change up anything massivel. The work was done with what is on the market, making the job of the complany and all the people involved in the creation, setting and repairing processes much easier.

Implementation Phase Tecnical solution

Implementation Phase Look andf Feel, Prototype

As a final stage of the project, a real scale prototype was created to test the ergonomy of the product as well as express, show and display the final result.

CSIO Barcelona Equestran Challenge Team: Carla Espino, Margalida Rius and Natàlia Catalan Tutor: Josep Novell

The Barcelona Equestrian Challenge is an ambitious project, an initiative of the Barcelona City Council and the Real Club de Polo de Barcelona (RCPB) to promote the equestrian world in Barcelona. One of the promotional activities they organize is the design of a horse jump for the CSIO Barcelona, one of the most important equestrian competitions in the world. The objective of the challenge was to create a jump inspired in Barcelona’s culture or architecture, without forgetting some specific and technical requests. The first presentation of project in front of the university jury was done with a mock up, and an initial screening of projects was done to select the top 7 projects -out of thirty- that would be presented in front of the official jury. Our project, called “Jumping Miró’s city”, was born as a mixture between Barcelona’s skyline and Miró’s iconic style, containing both cultural and architectural aspects.

Production Phase Construction of the obstacle

When Jumping Miró’s city became the winning project, the process of creation the real-scale jump started in the carpentry of Real Club de Polo de Barcelona. The team visited frequently the facilities to supervise the process and cooperate with the different technicians involved, carpenters and the vinyl printer specialists.

Once finished, the obstacle was presented in front of the press, with various TV channels and newspapers in the audience. As the spokeswoman of the team, I presented the jump and explained the inspiration and the process behind the project to the media. The jump has been continuously used in the following CSIO Barcelona’s contests celebrated.
