Rebuilding Iraq’s liberated areas: Mosul’s Housing Our task in this competition wast to „design a PROTOTYPE for affordable housing for the post-Daesh Mosul, which can be easily replicated with the objective of increasing the capacity of housing in the city and providing a practical and inspiring solution for returnees.” In our project we were facing a number of challenges. First of all, there were technical problems such as water shortages, hot tempeatures and need for fast and affordable construction methods. At the same time it was important for us to design a city with good atmosphere in which people want to live. We decided to adjust our design to local conditions and traditions as much as possible. The project is not located at any specific site, however it can be easily adopted to existing grid of perpendicular streets in the residential areas of Mosul. In our housing modules we used solutions typical for Arab Architecture such as patios with water fountains and narrow, shaded streets to face the climate challenges as well as to accomodate the habits of the future residents. The modules are based on the 4x4m grid which makes it possible to assembly them in various combinations. We also designed the giant, precasted wall-pots filled with soil that will cool the houses and streets and provide private, elevated gardens to all houses.

Our house will be ready at any moment now – probably we will be able to move into it in few days. It is going so fast thanks to the precast concrete structure. Apparently, this solution is fast and inexpensive, and the house will be strudy and solid. All houses are not plastered yet, but soon enough we will paint our home.

This giant wall-pot filled with soil will work as a cooling device for the interior of a house and the patio through its walls.

On our roof we will have an additional space to relax. Probably you can’t see it, but the roof is tilted: rain water will run down, irrigate our garden and then flow on to the salsabil on the patio.

Urban layout

Densification

Every house in our neighborhood can be reached with a car, but the streets do not cross our quarter.

Our neighborhood stared growing up around a well that survived the war.

Here, around, you can move everywhere on your foot. Everything we need is nearby.

More and more people are moving into our neighborhood. The first playgrounds appeared.

Thanks to the ‘wall-pots’ the strees are shadowed and cooled, and the air is less dusty.

There is plenty of new houses, shops and squares. Finally, we can live the way, that we used to. 9

The given site is located in Mirów district in the center of Warsaw. It used to be a prominent residential area before World War II, but during the war it was part of the Warsaw getto and was mostly destroyed. Nowadays, this area has no identity and is a mix of ruined tenants, modernist, neglected pavilions, storage halls and office buildings from the 90’s. However, the site itsef is located 10 minuted walk from the City Centre’s Palace of Culture and 7 minutes from the new metro line, so it becomes more and more attractive now.

Our task was to design a mutiplex cinema with exibition space, workshop rooms and 6 screening halls at least. My goal was to create not only a new space for premiers which can host most important events, but a cultural local centre where people will come during the day as well. That is why I decided to put all the screening halls underground and leave the groundfloor open to the outside as much as possible in order to accomodate also activities not entirely connected with the cinema itself. In addition, I designed an openair cinema at the roof garden level, which will be a cozy space in the middle of the city during the day and attract visitors during the night. The idea of cinemas with a little entering pavilion on the ground level with underground screening halls was very common in Warsaw in previous decades. The modernist cinemas, most of which do not exist anymore, became an inspiration for me.

Waterfront zorbing station The aim of this project was to design a local recreation center on the border of the lake in Wieliszew. The village is located between Warsaw and Zegrze Lake, which is one of the most popular places to spend an active weekend. We were supposed to add an extra function that will attract local people as well as visitors from surrounding cities. During my site visits I met a lot of children from the nearby school. That is why I decided to design a watersport station with zorbing balls and canoes rental. The architectural form which I designed uses natural ground level changes and is partially located undergroud in order not to interrupt the surrounding landscape. I also chose timber as the leading material to keep the building as much connected with the nature as possible. Na re

Masterplan of Old WĹ‚ochy region The task in this project was to re-design and densify a post-shopping mall area. As Warsaw expanded, this region became part of the city and was chosen as the future local center by the city authorities. It was planned that all existing buildings will be destroyed. The scope of the assignment reuqired the construction of a town hall, high school, primary school, church, center of culture and residential buildings for precise number of future inhabitants.

Axonometric view I decided to orientate the whole project along a woonerf style street that would be perpendicular to Popularna street, which is a highly used busy road. The town hall was placed at the crossing of these two streets and the rest of the public buildings were spead along the new street. Finally, at both of its ends, in order to preserve existing vegetation, I created small parcs.

In order to meet on one hand the high density requirements of the masterplan and at the same time match the low height of the buildings surrounding the newly created area, I decided to constuct two types of residential buildings: higher units surrounding inside courtyards and lower multifamily houses. The hight of the first ones fluctuated between 2 and 4 storeys, depending on the distance from the main streets. Service areas such as shops, cafeterias, etc. were located at the ground floors of the buildings that face the bigger streets, whereas the residential ground floor appartments faced more quite directions.

University Campus Nowadays, Fobrach (a small town in France) serves as a sleeping backroom for Saarbrucken (much larger city in Germany) and is dying as a town itself. The aim of our project was to re-create the cross-border area in-bewteen the cities and and bring life back to this ex-mining region facing various problems such as alcoholism, unempoyment, homelessness, depopulation and very high level of crime. We worked in a 4-person group and we started the project with analysis of the history, geography, demography and society of the region. Secondly, we proposed an overall functional masterplan and then each of us chose a particular area to focuss on.

Analysis of the region

In this areas we proposed to create: Tesla Industry - we decided to bring modern technology to this industrial area which is located in the geometrical center of Germany, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemburg. Those countries are the future market for electric cars. It gives opportunity to create reseach centre within it. University Campus - There are 2 faculties of UniversitĂŠ de Lorraine in Forbach now. If the Tesla Research Centre will be created there, new scientific site will be needed - this was my part of the project Housing - new modern housing needed for the new inhabitants Sport and recreation area - Space for citizens to relax and accomodation for visitors FricheTour - a touristic bus line that connects our sites and goes through the mining wastelands, nearby museums and the centre of Forbach

Compressed earth block house This voluntary project was organized by the Spanish branch of the Architects without Borders Assosiacion and took place in Azua, second biggest city of Dominican Republic. There are 65 000 of inhabitants there and half of them live in slums. Two groups of 20 volunteers were organised and each of them spent 3 weeks there. We had three kinds of tasks : 1. Preparation of the construction materials compresing the bricks (2-weeks drying process) 2. Building a prototype of a house using the compressed earth block method to show local people how they can use local materials to build their own, cheap, safe and easy houses 3. Creating project documentation based on field studies - researching needs and habits of local people, environment, legal conditions, etc. We maped the existing slums and provided recommendations about what else volunteers can do in the future.
