PROJECT ONE

THE AURELIAN WALL

5 13

This project engages the contextually layered site of Porta Asinaria in a respectful and playful way. The focus is to repurpose the Aurelian Wall and Porta Asinaria as not only a pivotal traffic juncture for subway commuters, but also as a cultural and recreational centre. By engaging the visitors directly with the history of the site and city, through a youthful intervention, an engaging and active public space is created. The public space is defined and framed by a museum, a market, and a subway entrance. The museum displays its perched collection to the busy commuters each day. The historic market transforms into a soccer field in the evening and the subway entrance along with the retail and restaurant space fills the space with active and dynamic visitors.

Term: 4A Studio (Fall 2015) Project Partner: David Donnelly Programs Used: AutoCAD, Vray, Rhinoceros, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, and Google SketchUp

PROJECT TWO

ARTIST STUDIO

9 15

Animation revolves around imitating how humans act. I chose a point along the Aurelian Wall where the animator would be able to people watch; Parco Lineare a park. It is located in a high public transit area so the design blends with the wall while still interact with the public. It is designed between two towers. One tower is straight, while the second has an angled skirt. The screen creates a wave merging with the two tower typologies. The building addresses the people in the park by showing them the story of an animator. The building has one large window allowing people to look into the studio space. People are able watch the animator work. They are able to see straight through the building to the wall creating a backdrop for the live show. The other connection to the public is at night the animator can project his work on the wall. The none formal aspect of this allows people to come and go as the please to see the finished product. The wall is a constant backdrop for the animators story from start to finish.

PROJECT THREE

OUTDOOR POOL

11 17

The design of the project is driven by the idea of keeping the visual of the horizon in tack. This initiated the main design decision of moving the majority of the program above the pier on columns. The only program left on pier level is the pools. The public is able to freely weave in-between the pools, diving board and slide while still maintaining a view of the horizon. To access the programs above multiple ramps were hung from the buildings structure. These ramps allow for wheelchair accessibility as well as making the walk an extension of the pier. Once the lobby is entered people are given a view back to Toronto before they continue to walk towards the horizon. A smaller hallway leads to the change rooms. This is indicated by the view the slide. The other hallway leads people on a grand walk towards the great room. Glass craters are created allowing light to penetrate through the building lighting the area bellow. These craters also give views from above to below.

PROJECT FOUR

URBAN BUILDING

15 21 15

The objective of this course was to create a large building complex that balances many program types: a hotel, residential, bookstore, innovation centre, retail and an open program (gallery. The site conditions also gave direction to this project, the Gardiner Expressway, Fort York and City Place. My approach was to create a large atrium space for the base of the building that activated the most public corner of the site and housed the main stair that ran from the first floor up until the last providing stops at the most public programs. From this atrium the program snakes around the perimeter of the site creating a central courtyard that addresses the building complex on the site next to ours. For the hotel and residential portion I used a slab typology that would frame the inner courtyard.

PROJECT FIVE

BOATHOUSE

19 23

The boathouse is situated on a bank near the Grand River, in the historic town of Cambridge. The design of the infrastructure and of the landscaping seizes site opportunities to help the flow of people, through the building, towards the butterfly park and the Grand River. There are three different components of the Rowing Club. The first portion is dedicated to private program, storage, workout room etc. The second is for administration and mechanical, and the third is for the public program, the cafe and event space. The main volumes of the building appear to drift with the typography of the coast, while angling away from one another to optimize views to the river. This creates an interesting tension between the public programs and the more private ones. Through materiality and spacial design the building works with the site instead of against it. It expands horizontally, instead of vertically to minimize the effect on a person walking through and to allow for the plantation around the building to remain the focus.

PROJECT SIX

EVOLVE COMPETITION

23 25 23

The Evolve Competition required the applicants to design a net zero bank. Our bank used multiple techniques to acquire this, a green wall, geothermal energy, solar panels. We wanted our design to have a curtain wall on the main facade so we utilized Kalwall panels that still allow natural light in while being very insulated. Also, we used reclaimed wood as cladding that could be purchased from a manufacturer less then 50Km. Ultimately, thought the use of materials and energy efficient technology we designed a net zero bank.

PROJECT SEVEN

EXTRA-SMALL

Extra Small is a rest stop created to provide shelter and a repair station for bike couriers. The buildings are located in an alley way and designed so that a person is still able to walk or ride through the space. Also, these voids in the building were put in place to create a sense of community between the bikers in the area. BIKE. SLEEP. LIVE.

OTHER PROJECTS

ADDITIONAL SCHOOL PROJECTS This is a collection of other projects I have completed while at school. They include a range of models, chair construction, installations, and renders. These projects were selected because I feel that they show other skills that the previous pages may have not touched upon.

OTHER PROJECTS

VISUAL ART PROJECTS Here is a selection of art pieces that I created. The first is an example of a print making project. The process of print making is an art in itself. Each step has to be carefully planned out. It is a lino cut piece and I experimented with the colour of the background. The second is a study I did of the female body. After taking a few figure study classes I wanted to further explore using colour and motion.

29 29

PROJECTS

SKETCHES FROM ABROAD

This is a compilation of sketches that were drawn during my term abroad in Rome, Italy. One of our projects was to keep a sketchbook as if it were a diary or commonplace book. We had to sketch a drawing a day of what we experienced, the people and the spaces. I used my sketchbook to experiment with different mediums, such as watercolour, and ink. I also experimented with different ways of drawing, blind contour and continuous line. Ultimately, by keeping this sketchbook my ability to interpret perspective and refine my drawing skills was achieved.

OTHER PROJECTS

SEWING PROJECTS

31 31

The process of sewing is very similar to that of architecture, but on a smaller scale. It follows a design process that begins with 2D plans giving instructions to create an object that houses a person. From my own design I create a pattern using cheap fabric, which allows me then to cut my final pieces. Creating an article of clothing involves creativity, problem solving and patience.

WORK EXPERIENCE

ARQUITECTONICA

PROFILE: Arquitectonica is a major presence on the world architectural stage. They continue exploring and pushing the limits of their innovative use of geometry, pattern, and colour to introduce a new brand of humanistic modern design to the world. DUTIES: During my term at Arquitectonica I worked on multiple projects that were in different phases of design/ construction. The majority of my time was spent on construction administration, answering RFIs, CCDs, etc. I was also given the opportunity to design a perforated metal screen. I created options for the client to look at and redesigned according to the criticism given. I helped to create presentation drawings, colour blocking site plans and adjusting rendered images. The renders below were outsourced to a company and did not capture the vision of the architect, therefore I reworked them in photoshop. The elevation before is a study of the screens that would go on the building.

WORK EXPERIENCE

RED Studio Inc. Architects

PROFILE: RED Studio Inc. Architects is a full service architectural and design firm with a focus on environmental design and well-being, firmly rooted in sustainability. It is not an afterthought but a true reflection of our design process and is naturally integrated into our approach.

DUTIES: I was a member of a small team that was completing a permit and tender set. I was taught how to create general details for the building and how to draw more complex details. I attended client meetings and coordinated with the electrical, mechanical and structural engineers. Since it was a small firm I also helped with other project when I was needed. The details below were completed by me and reviewed by the architect.

WORK EXPERIENCE

CS&P ARCHITECTS

PROFILE: Architects at CS&P spend time during projects to discover imaginative and meaningful ways to connect these buildings and spaces with their contexts. They design buildings from the inside out, therefore allowing them to continually explore ways to enhance and enrich our clients’ programmes. DUTIES: Over the term I experienced the administration/marketing portion of their firm as well as the urban design and architecture area. I put together advertisements and project proposals for the marketing department. I completed construction drawings for a project going to tender. I was given the responsibility to coordinate multiple tasks and projects. The diagram below was completed by me, the detail was completed by me and reviewed by the architect, the advertisement was made using images from the office, the site plan was coloured by me using Illustrator. I chose them to show the array of work I did while at the office.

WORK EXPERIENCE

PERKINS + WILL

PROFILE: The firm believes that built environments should reflect context, history, cultures, communities and nature while incorporating new technology. They are committed not only to wasting less, but to creating regenerative designs which heal their local environments. DUTIES: I was placed on a multitude of different project types, from interior design work to schematic design. I created presentation drawings for projects applying for awards. I had the task of preparing diagrams. I arranged office spaces and populated a gym facility with furniture. I planned the model making room for our office. I prepared paperwork for a conservation project. All the diagrams below were completed by me for a project involving Ryerson University.

WORK EXPERIENCE

PARKIN ARCHITECTS LIMITED

PROFILE: It is an award-winning, institutional architectural firm with practical, innovative and economical design. Parkin specializes in health care, recreational, research, justice and other institutional clients. They believe in personalizing the design experience for clients.

DUTIES: I was responsible for transferring sketches from paper to AutoCAD. I had to complete daylighting and circulation diagrams. I had the task of inputting data into Excel and contributed to designing rooms for the in-patiant units in the hospital. I was a member of a project team, participating in a contest. I held many responsibilities within the team. While at the firm, I worked on a P3 Competition and was unable to take any of the drawings I completed because of legal reasons.
