Welcome
There are many opportunities to take part in additional activities through the Students’ Association and our learners frequently play a major part in local charity, sports, recreational and cultural activities. Coleg Powys sends more people to university than any other institution in Powys and the achievements of our students are a constant source of pride to us. Our successful completion rates are among the highest in Wales with many students achieving triple distinctions and distinction stars (equivalent to grade A and A* at A Level.). Further, many more gained the qualifications to start-up businesses or to take up financially and personally rewarding craft based professions.
The College has fantastic recreational facilities. “Themes Restaurant” is located on the Newtown site and is a working restaurant staffed solely by students who train in all aspects of the hospitality industry. We were particularly proud to host the Powys Business Awards, as the event gave us an opportunity to demonstrate the standards of excellence that our students regularly achieve. The restaurant is often used by the many visitors who experience top class entertainment at Theatr Hafren. Our portfolio of Theatre courses is continuing to expand and we were delighted to launch The Powys Performing Arts Academy, based at Theatre Brycheiniog in September. We also have professionally equipped salons on our major sites and a college farm on the Newtown campus.

What the students say “I opted for a vocational learning route rather than A levels as I felt that it was good to concentrate on one thing and put all my efforts into that rather than to juggle lots of subjects. I have achieved distinctions in every module and will now be progressing to a degree in Business Management and IT at the College. I feel that I am now two years closer to achieving my ambition of running my own business. I would like to create an enterprise connected to my passion for horses” Chloe Lloyd Business National Certificate BTEC “I chose to study this as I wanted to get the level 3 qualification needed to work with children. It also offered a lot of UCAS points so provided a good grounding for university and teacher training. The atmosphere at the college is very friendly and the tutors were a tremendous help during the course. I have successfully got a place on a Primary Education with Qualified Teacher status course.”

Where are they now? Former BTEC National Diploma Art & Design student Mark Williams is currently studying in his last year of Fashion Design at Kingston University, London. This year Mark has completed a British Fashion Council project for Burberry which included designing a collection of outerwear garments for the brand. Mark said, “The BTEC National Diploma in Art & Design is equivalent to 3 A-Levels, which was really important to me as today you need qualifications to succeed and as I wasn’t very academic, I thought this was the best way to get the 3 A-Levels needed to go onto higher education. Coleg Powys Newtown offered me the space and the freedom of creativity. As I concentrated on fashion there was everything available to me which I needed to fulfil my potential.”
Natalie Smith another former Art & Design student, went on to study graphic design at Birmingham Institute of Art & Design, and gained a BA (Hons) in Visual Communication. Since leaving university, Natalie has been working with local design companies, as well as working as a freelance designer with her own company Natalie Rose Design. Earlier this year, she began refreshing the marketing material for Coleg Powys, from leaflets to student diaries, prospectuses to email templates. Natalie said “It’s been a great opportunity to say thank you to the college for helping me out in my career, and has been a thoroughly enjoyable experience working with the staff there too. I feel my time at Coleg Powys was the perfect way to introduce me to studying and working in the art & design field, a great platform to then go on to study at a higher level and the first step in the ladder to developing a career of working in the design industry.”
Former National Diploma in Art & Design student Jessica Bryant is now in University studying a BA (Hons) Degree in Applied Art. Speaking of her time in Coleg Powys Jessica said, “I think the tutors are inspirational, helpful, motivating and real role models to anybody serious about a career in the Art and Design Industry. The Coleg Powys course gave me a foot through the door and UCAS points to apply to university, along with experience both with materials and life.”
