Research Research showed that there is room in the market for an alternative or supplemental depression treatment, and that sufferers of SAD are most commonly women. We therefore narrowed our target market to women ages 18-35.

Ideation After interviews, surveys, and observation, we brainstormed ways to organically integrate SAD light therapy into women’s days. But our research showed us that light therapy lamps were cumbersome, bulky, and ultimately ineffective. We turned our focus toward recent studies that showed negative ions, like those found in air purification systems, may improve mood and negate some symptoms of depression. Through Harris profile and weighted objectives method we settled on an integrated negative ion alarm clock and began prototyping. 9

Air New Zealand utilizes branding that a dresses their two major passengers: residents traveling within the island and visitors on holiday. Part Kiwi culture, part island cool, ANZ’s advertisements and branding speak to their unique character and their favorite aspects of Kiwiana: the All Black rugby team, the beach, and of course, Lord of the Rings. Digging into Kiwi culture gave us insight into which key parts of ANZ’s current branding were important to embrace, and how we could incorporate some of the more nuanced parts of their message into our project.

Ideation Together, my partner and I modeled the seat-back of an airline to help us get a feel for how much room we might have. Then we started brainstorming. Card-sorting gave way to some ideas integral to the foundations of our concept. The time in-air signifies a transition between comforts of home and newness of travel. We decided to create forms that evoke comfort while leaving a few surprises along the way.

Final Prototype The final form affords comfortable resting places for the hands and surprising patterns repeated in interesting ways.

Branding We decided to focus on the aspects of Kiwiana that are repeated throughout the ANZ branding and uniform pattern. By using imagery of the silver fern, a national symbol, and focusing on the “All Black connection instead of utilizing the purple motifs currently used by the brand, we created a toned-down version of their fun branding.
