Generative intent
Creation of the generative intent began by looking at the core values of a library and how it’s currently functioning in the community.
search discover v generate truth ideas
All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them. - Galileo Galilei
7
Concept Statement:
Creating the connection between educational attractions in Chattanooga, TN, by redesigning the weakest link. The library focuses on connecting the community with educational resources and embracing cultural dierences. Community members entering the space will be welcomed by the atmosphere and encouraged along the path of discovery.
Invisible threads are the strongest ties.
with community
cultural differences

11
THE NAME & Inspiration The Learning + Knowledge Commons …provides boundless opportunity for growth. It is based on a cross-curricular perspective that recognizes literacy, numeracy, knowledge, thinking, communication, and application as foundations for learning how to learn. …becomes the physical and virtual catalyst where inquiry, imagination, discovery, and creativity come alive and become central to growth — personal, academic, social and cultural.
12
Design Process - Rebranding the educational tourism experience of Chattanooga - Creating a ‘mall of discovery’ by connecting the dots of learning and creation
This ‘mall’ includes: - The Public Library - Tivoli Theater - Creative Discovery Museum - Tennessee Aquarium - Battles for Chattanooga - AT&T Field - IMAX Theater
13
Scheme #1: - Community Space is dispersed among shelves and other functional spaces
Community spaces Circulation + welcome area + Seating
Scheme #2: - Community Space is visually connected to shelves and seating - Shelving and seating varies by level
Community spaces Shelving + seating Circulation + welcome area
14
Community + INTERACTIVE SPACES: Bays of community spaces will occur throughout the building to house meeting and collaboration eorts patrons - each will hold a variety of tools and technology to best meet the needs of the users.
Young adult community spaces will be relaxed - with seating such as beanbags, pillows, etc. The recessed space will be used for lectures, meetings, and performances.
Programmatic additions
15
Maker’s/Fabrication Lab:
The ‘maker’s lab’ will house small-scale CNCs, laser cutters, and 3D printers. Local community members and visitors will be able to participate in demonstrations and utilize resources after proper training. Classes will be held regularly on the floor below in the secondary lab.
16
Variety in shelving + seating:
Visual interest will be created through material, texture, and form. By playing with height and interspersing collaborative areas, the space will take a more exible function and be attention-grabbing.
To lessen the intimidation factor, shelf length and height will vary. Circulation aisles between shelves will also be greater in size, to allow for light penetration and a more comfortable atmosphere.
Programmatic additions
17
Private + Reservable meeting Rooms:
Reservable meeting rooms are ideal for conferences, phone calls, and general meetings. Patrons will be able to schedule time to use these spaces at the front desk or by phone.

Design Critiques
25 Victoria Beaulieu Great graphics! The addition of rental space would be a great source of revenue Rent the CNC machine - for additional revenue Draw people in from community Street branding - good addition Study different generations’ needs In use + Seating Types
Donna Fullmer Define ‘rentable’ vs ‘reservable’ Print vs. digital resources Make it clear people can eat and drink in library Define ‘Maker’s Lab’ vs. ‘Test Shop’
Maxine Ganske What kind of history will be featured? Local? Shop - would you buy books? What about coffee? Stack length and height variation - good

Retail Space:
As per suggestion in the critique of schematic design ideas, retail spaces were added as a source of revenue for the library. These will be located on every oor, and can house a variety of businesses, including; tourist attractions, the Tennessee Historical Society, the Friends of the Library chapter, etc.
Spatial Development
35
Reference Desk: The reference desk will become recognizable on every oor maintaining the same shape and graphic identity. It will act as a marker and a symbol of information; not only for information about the materials housed in the library, but also for the attractions and community amenities available in it.
Test Lab:
The Test Lab will be a space to let local patrons try out new technologies that the library has to oer - including things such as iPads, Kindles, laptops, etc. These items will be available for limited checkout with strict restrictions and security deposits.
36
Cafe: The cafe will be the main entrance into the library, and will act as a hub for all those visiting. It is open past normal hours of the library, and will be operated as another source of revenue and staed by the local owners. Just like the library, it will have a variety of seating types and will be exible for those using the space, while maintaining an openness for those passing through.
Spatial Development
37
Maker’s Lab: The maker’s lab is currently existent in the Chattanooga library, but is being revamped. It will be an interactive space that can hold large groups of people for demonstrations and use of machines such as CNCs, 3D printers, and laser cutters.
Shelving: Shelving will be staggered in both length and height to add visual interest to the space and lessen the intimidation factor that libraries usually have. The endof-shelving material will have pops of col, and seating will be integrated into the layout of the shelves to provide maximum interaction with the materials.
38
LOGO Development Based on the idea of books, pages, and the Chattanooga skyline. The logo needs to be something simple that can be printed on a variety of materials, while still maintaining a strong identity. The colors will be simple and plain and will appeal to all ages and stand out on any color. The Chattanooga font should be used on all branding materials, and should be integrated into the design of the logo.

Design Development Critiques, March 28, 2014 Attendees: Professional - Victoria Beaulieu Professors - Neal Hubbell, David Richter-O’Connell* Content Reviewer - Maxine Ganske, Ellen Urton* General Comments: Neal Hubbell Fix general layout - make a main circulation alley What about putting all of the visitors stuff on one level? David Richter-O’Connell Stress the Civil War history in the area Add attractions that relate to the Civil War Maxine Ganske Cafe at front is a bad idea - noise control with children Move the cafe back, put the visitor’s center at the front Think about security and materials in the space

Graphic identity for the Chattanooga Public Library was developed as a series of icons, portraying the meaning associated with every room clearly and succinctly. Colors coordinate with the overall function of the room - red for local vendors and attractions, orange for community spaces, blue for library/stack functions, and green for support rooms. *denotes suggested icons for local attractions - for street and outdoor signage/graphics

Visitor’s Center
The addition of the Chattanooga Visitor’s Center adds a source of revenue to the Public Library, and welcomes tourists to the city. The Visitor’s Center is a place to find information about attractions, shows, and other resources within the library, and holds a gift shop with Chattanooga merchandise.
69
Cafe
The cafe will act as a secondary branch of a local coee shop (suggested - Stone Cup Cafe) and will be a place to relax and grab a snack or drink before perusing the library or just passing through. It acts as a separate entity and maintains separate hours and sta from the library itself.
70
Cafe
The cafe will act as a secondary branch of a local coee shop (suggested retailer - Stone Cup Cafe) and will be a place to relax and grab a snack or drink before perusing the library or just passing through. It holds a variety of seating types for groups and individuals.
71
Reference Desk
The reference desk is a recognizable point throughout the library - it will maintain consist graphics and color, and will be a hub for information, material check-out, and interaction with library sta.
72
Circulation Alley
There is a main ‘alley’ of circulation on every floor - pictured above is that space on the first floor. This alley can be relied on for the highest levels of interaction, along with visual clarity to evey point on the floor.
73
Children’s LIbrary
The Children’s Library caters to every need of a child - it has soft and hard seating, ample space to run and play, and shelves that are easily reached by smaller children. There are a variety of interactive spaces, including a reading area, which is pictured above.
74
Homework Help
The Public Library beneďŹ ts from the addition of community outreach spaces, such as a teen homework help area. Spaces such as these will have movable furniture and writing surfaces for young adults to use.
75
Shelving
Shelving in the library isn’t as intimidating as in a typical library - it varies in height and depth, and staggers to create more visual interest in shelving spaces. The end-of-therange material brings excitement and color into what is otherwise thought of as a boring, at space.
76
Collaboration
The Public Library holds a large amount of collaboration spaces with lounge and task seating, desks, and light variation. These are spaces for patrons to relax and unwind, meet, or just hang out in a social setting.
77
Solo Work
One of the types of work spaces available to library users is solo study areas. These spaces have high levels of visual privacy, while maintaining an inviting openness to the rest of the space. These desks have access to tackboards and markerboards for maximum usability.
78
Shelving
Another example of shelving variety is shown in the above image. Seating is interspersed throughout the shelves, and invites people to interact with the library material and use it as more than a storage space for printed materials and literature.
