1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE

The concept of point line and plane showcases the connection between the three architectural elements, and highlights their strong relationship to one another. When looking in plan, a column would be considered a point, whereas a series of coloumns would join together to make a line. In my models, I attempted to display the idea of lines becoming planes, and the slow transition between the ground, and the architecture. I was interested in the way negative space can be cut out of areas to create shadows. I also liked this idea of architecture that “grows� from the ground. When considering secrets, I aim to make use of the idea of the shadows concealing a secret, and then light exposing it.

1.2 FRAME & INFILL The strong concepts that I took out of frame and infill was this feeling of weightlessness, and this idea of antigravitational architecture. This idea that you can take it apart, and reconfigure it helped me in the understanding. In my model, I took elements from Japanese architecture, and their idea of translucency, to create a design that allows light in, however, is not solid so that this lightweight ideal remains. Inclusions of the dynamic shutters encapsulated this theory of movability and temporality.

1.3 MASS The concept of mass brings forth the images of solidity, weight and scale. Monumental architecture often makes use of mass to enlist fear or wonder in people who view it. I was interested in the way a building may appear to slip into a landscape, almost like it reflecting the weight of the earth, like in bunker architecture. I included large amount of stairs in my drawing to emphasize the scale of the building as the visitior will grow tired of walking for so long. I incorporated areas of natural light, which come through channels of transparent hard plastics, bringing light into an otherwise extremely dark area of the building underground. Like in the Point/Line/Plane model, I like the idea of the way lights and shadows can expose a secret, and that revealing this secret, will lead you to a potentially better place.

1.4 Pavilion
Pavilions enter a space to create a certain atmosphere. In these examples, I like the shadows that are created that lead an individual to experience the space. I also appreciate the way the wooden pavilion looks as if it is growing outwards from the ground surface.

The site that I have chosen is in a small opening amongst the foliage as I would like to make use of the sunlight for a shadow effect. It is also close to a path making it easy for people to come across. The final design relies on shadows, therefore, the position of the sun and the direction that it shines affects the experience of the pavilion.

3.0 HERRING ISLAND. SOMETHING LIKE A PAVILION
I found that Herring Island was most interesting due to its scultpural history. Many sculptures can be found around the man made island, which I would like to make use of in my design. I would like my design to target the idea of a sculpture concealing a pavilion. This may mean that people do not find the hidden “secret” place, as they just look from afar as they consider it to be a scultpure.

3.1 SITE ANALYSIS AND CONCEPTACLE
My conceptacle targets the idea of discrimination of women in society, and their progression in the fight for equality. It initiated from a movie I watched about “artist” Walter Keane and his wife Margaret. It was set in the 1960s, where women’s art was not appreciated and accepted in the art world. Margaret was an artist, however due to the sexist society that they lived in, the art was put under WaIters name. Transferring this idea to architecture, the conceptacle extends from a dark, covered place, to an area where there are some openings and some light, yet these parts that have not fully broken off, and then finally a free and open roof, signifying equality and freedom. There is this idea of a journey, and the shadows are there to remind the individual that women must continue to fight for equality. The light exposes the women who venture there, it celebrates their talents and achievements.

3.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN
I continued with this idea of a journey through the struggle for equality and decided that it may be best to seperate the design to different areas. The underground area is symbollic of the oppression of women, and the way in which they must keep moving forward and challenging society for equality. The huge staircase highlights the long, trecherous journey, however the light that creates a traingle on the wall, as well as the light filled stairs symbolizes hope. I also wanted to incorporate the idea of children playing in this area. Underneath these lifting triangles can be an area where children can hide.

Time Capsule - 200 years
This time capsule is representative of women’s place in society currently. It is symbolic of the many ways in which women are not treated with equality, like for example the pay gap, and the workplace discrimination. In 200 years, when the time capsule is opened, it will be interesting to see whether it is still a patriarchal society, or whether it is one of equality. It is positioned underneath the stairs as it is representative of women, therefore it lies in this women only area. It is slightly hidden, as often women’s rights are hidden or pushed to the side. It is not in plain site on ground level, as it is often the few discriminatory men who attempt to cover up the inequalities of society. Therefore, it is women’s responsibility to keep on pushing for equals rights, and they will hopefully return to this area in 200 years, and open the time capsule, and feel proud of what they have achieved, and how far they have come in this time.

3.3 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
As I was creating three different designs instead of just one, I figured that I had to make them coherent in some way. I did this by incorporating triangles into each design, connecting them to one another, whilst stll remaining quite different. Both the underground area, and the large pavilion are reflecting the scultpural presence on the island. The other building however, is merely a toilet block that houses the cleaners cubicle, and the storage space. At the time, the cleaners cubicle is attached to the womens toilet. It would be interesting to see whether societies views and expectations have changed in 200 years when the time capsule is opened.

4.0 REFLECTION I have thoroughly enjoyed this subject and I think it has taught me more about the styles and elements of architecture. I have come to an understanding of building architecture for a conceptual purpose (secrets), which has challenged me to think outside the box and in less realistic terms. I particularly enjoyed the model we made of frame and infill, as I appreicated the way in which we could make a series of rectalinear prisms, and arrange and rearrange them to get your desired effect. With regards to the final project, I was challenged with the form of the pavilion shelter. I had this idea of undulating triangles, that showed the progression of women, however, I struggled finding a form that really fit the purpose in this instance. I wanted to draw people to the area with the shadows on the ground, however, this perhaps could have been achieved in the interior of a structure. I think I felt that I wanted to design something small and almost scultpural as it was designed to be a pavilion, however, I think I should have perhaps considered a more traditional built stucture. I think where I have managed to create the largest amount of depth in my narrative is in my underground area, which has menacing stairs and shadow effects. The time capsule, which was one of the required fields in the brief, has served my concept well, as it fits in with this idea of women’s progression through time. It poses the question where will women be at in the fight for eauality in 200 years?
