BACKGROUND Louise Fili was born on April 12, 1951 in New Jersey where she grew up in an Italian-American household. From an early age she was interested in type, carving letterforms into her wall and teaching herself calligraphy. She attended Skidmore College before transferring to the School of Visual Arts for her last semester of college.

BACKGROUND CAREER After college, she was hired as a senior graphic designer by Knopf where she designed book covers. Soon she landed a job with Herb Lubalin who mentored her as she continued to design book covers. In 1978, Fili became the art director for Pantheon Books, designing covers that had “instant recognation, as though they were logos. She achieved this by creating type that matched the personalities of the book covers she designed. Fili left Pantheon in 1989 to open her own studio. 6

LOUISE BACKGROUND FILI LTD. Since Fili opened her studio in 1989, she has been able to focus on designing restaurant identity, packaging and logos for food-related companies, and books. Her designs are heavily influenced by her love for food, typography, and all things Italian. She has taken numerous trips to Italy and France to collect graphics and take photos of signage to use for inspiration for her designs. 8
BACKGROUND “If you have a problem with my being female, then I don’t want you as a client.”

BACKGROUND PROCESS When she designs, she does not use a computer. She sketches her designs and then supervises the execution of them on a computer by one of her designers. Her goal is to make her designs look like they were not done on a computer at all, especially for vintage designs. She also combines her typography with images from illustrators that she has worked with for several years, including Anthony Russo, Mark Summers, and Melanie Marder Parks. 10
