MCS IS A CONNECTED COMMUNITY where families belong, find their place, build relationships, and develop a true heart of service.

Look what our Community did this year! Salute to Veterans This MCS tradition was a hallmark as we welcomed MCS Dad Lt. Col. Matthew McDonald to share his experience as a military family serving in the Marines. We were honored to present Tony Moiso, MCS Grandfather and Chairman of the Rancho Mission Viejo company, with the distinguished Ben Friedman Leadership Award for his impact on the Orange County community. PTF Hosts New Opportunities for MCS Families Our PTF provides a myriad events for parents and students to connect, grow together, and have FUN! MCS Spirit was alive and well, with our first ever Middle School Midnight Madness at the Back to School Bash. Our inaugural Father-Daughter dance was also a highlight, with 130 Dads and daughters swinging the night away!

MESSAGE FROM HEATHER HARRISON INTERIM HEAD OF SCHOOL Since 1987, the mission of “building a firm foundation through Christcentered education” has guided Mariners Christian School’s Board, Administration, and amazing faculty and staff in its advancement to become a premier Christian school in Southern California. This mission and our school thrives because of the unwavering commitment of YOU, our faithful partners in education, who bathe MCS in prayer and support so that we can continue on a path of excellence and innovation for students, as we equip our young ambassadors for Christ to lead in high school and college confident of who they are—and whose they are. It is with great excitement that we share this Annual Report which is filled with stories, statistics, and successes that all point to what the Lord is accomplishing on campus through your generosity and involvement— and more than anything else, we want to say THANK YOU! We covet your prayers and partnership as we soar into the 2019-20 year, aiming to “Reflect the Son” in all we do and to strengthen the Legacy of Mariners Christian School.

MCS CORE VALUES:

MILESTONES TO CELEBRATE!

Love For Christ Exemplary Academics Whole Child Focus Culture Of Innovation Connected Community

With the completion of Phase One, we doubled the size of our TK program and now offer two classes of 19 students in fantastic spaces that are brimming with natural light and a flexible layout

We invested in our Connected Community through training parent Bible study leaders and mentor leaders with an eye towards launching future MCS Bible studies

We premiered our first-ever Elementary musical “School House Rock, Jr.!” and Middle School fall play “A Charlie Brown Christmas” in the new Argyros Center for Worship and Performing Arts

THE INNOVATIVE ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE AT MCS Our Culture of Innovation promotes unique learning experiences!

MCS Teachers Engage Students With RealWorld NASA Challenge Project Based Learning is an exciting way that MCS teachers connect learning with real-world problems, giving students a sense of purpose while problem-solving alongside professionals in the field, all the while developing a distinctly Christian worldview. This year, third graders imagined they were the first lunar colonists. While this might not seem like a “real world problem,” on March 26, Vice President Pence commissioned NASA to return to the moon within the next five years! Students launched their project with a Skype call to a NASA scientist who explained the mission and asked students for help. After determining basic survival needs, students collaborated on engineering projects (accessing NASA research). They finished by writing children’s books incorporating writing stemming from their grade-level Units of Study.

Students demonstrated their growth while reading aloud to their family, as well as an opportunity to share their character analysis over a warm cup of cocoa. Second grade introduced a Book Tasting, inviting parents to visit “MCS Starbooks Cafe” and ‘taste’ what students had been working on, including character discussion and opinion writing. Parents engaged in the learning process by leaving feedback on comment cards—plus bonding over Starbooks treats!

Academic Course Expansion in Middle School Helps Students Reach Their Greatest Potential

“MCS teachers aim to give students a sense of ownership, purpose, and curiosity while still mastering the academic and STEM standards of learning.”

Research and piloting of curriculum led to adopting Envision Math—resulting in reinforcement for instruction and learning, as well as intervention, individualization, and differentiation

Increased academic support through 1-1 and small group instruction to students with math deficiencies

Added new Math Intervention Specialist position

Introduced ELA honors classes in 7th grade as well as expanded support classes for students needing intervention

Intensified focus on developing scholarly habits and practices within each discipline with emphasis on Socratic discussion and project-based learning to help students sharpen critical thinking and problem solving skills

Kim Wilson, TK-5th grade Curriculum Specialist

Individualized Learning Involves Parents In The Educational Process As MCS continues to emphasize high-level literacy through Reading and Writing Units of Study, relying heavily on the model originated by Lucy Calkins of Columbia University, MCS teachers introduced new ways for parents to support student progress. This year, we welcomed parents to a Character Clubs and Cocoa event at the end of the character study in Reading Workshop.

Difference Makers with True Hearts Of Service Students experience the power of Christ working through them as they leverage their own ideas to impact the community! Our locally recognized Difference Maker Program continues to thrive, encouraging students to become innovative leaders as they serve others. This year 20 students led projects resulting in all-school participation to accomplish the following: •

700+ Student-created blessing bags for the homeless.

250+ bags of groceries during Fall Food Drive to fill two local food pantries.

1673 pairs of socks collected in Socktober Drive.

300+ “BACKPACKS OF HOPE” containing toys, HOPE BEARS, and matching HOPE bracelets given to children battling long term illnesses, homelessness, and abuse.

Already on point are 28 students ready to LEAD Difference Maker Projects in 2019-20, with a goal to involve the entire MCS Community in furthering God’s Kingdom!

BR IG HT FUTURE LOOK- FORWA R D! While remaining committed to our Traditions and CORE Values, MCS Leadership continues to forge ahead in accomplishing the Bright Future vision within our strategic plan. Key to this Vision is the PHYSICAL SPACE in which to offer specialized Middle School academies based on student passion, “whole child” enrichment opportunities, and incredible enhancements to current programs in Special Education, Bible, Language, and more—creating a continuum of programs unlike any private school in the area! Phase II will bring these dreams to fruition for MCS!

With your partnership, these new enhancements will be available immediately for students in Fall 2020: •

Recapturing 10,000 sq. ft. of previously unused space to support new academic programming and traffic flow on both levels Best-in-class teaching environments—37 larger, modernized classrooms throughout elementary and

middle school, featuring window installation in all exterior classrooms • •

Two brand new Maker Spaces (elementary and middle school) Two open-air, two-story atriums, providing natural light to interior classrooms

Middle School Commons Area for students to gather, collaborate, study, and build Christ-honoring friendships

Dedicated front entry stairway for easy access to Middle School

Whole-school security measures

Thank you in advance for being a part of God’s BIG PLANS for MCS!

Stories of Sacrifice Our Bright Future Campaign is filled with stories of generosity and sacrifice… we stand amazed at how God has touched so many hearts to build the Legacy of HIS school! •

A special MCS grandfather had been saving profit from a special business deal, praying for years that the Lord would show him just where to invest that money. As soon as he heard of the pressing need within our building project and that the teachers were making pledges from their own paychecks, he felt God’s quiet prompting that MCS was that special place. Imagine our MCS Community’s reaction to this incredible $1M anonymous donation!!

MCS staff gives their all: Time. Talent. And… treasure. They do whatever it takes to make sure their students are reaching for God’s best. Of their own initiative, 35 teachers and faculty united to pledge their financial support of MCS Bright Future—these educators are PUMPED to soar for students in their new spaces!
