A joyFULL Message from Administration joyFULL! What a fantastic theme to embrace during the 2017-18 year, as we witnessed God lead Mariners Christian School forward into a new chapter in its institutional history, one that ranks as one of its most exciting yet! From the very start of the new year, it was clear that something extraordinary was stirring within the hearts of of the MCS community. This Giving Impact Report is a hallmark of gratitude to the Lord for His provision and a celebration of YOUR investment into HIS plan for our future, an exciting future that surpasses even our strategic plans for building modernization and program expansion. The most exciting dreams of the future lie in the hands of our students, as it is their fingerprints that will be imprinted upon the community and world as Difference Makers for God’s Kingdom. Truly, this has been a season of exciting innovation and momentum in many ways for MCS: •
Within the Advancement Department, Admissions has fostered tremendous growth, with demand for enrollment in both elementary and middle school growing at a stronger pace than the last 5 years.
•
The Financial Picture is laying a solid foundation for future growth, with a growing Endowment and budget that allows us to be competitive with faculty compensation in local school districts.
•
And our Culture of Giving has witnessed an unprecedented positive shift, with parent participation in the Annual Fund reaching an all-time high of 83% and leadership donors making possible aggressive construction timelines for our Bright Future comprehensive campaign.
Because of your partnership, our students and teachers can pursue a Bright Future at MCS… all for God’s glory! We are grateful, and we welcome your prayers for the new year! Heather Harrison

NEW DEPTH ADDED TO ACADEMIC PROGRAMS MCS is known for providing engaging academic experiences supported by an innovative curriculum to ensure that all learners achieve their greatest individual academic potential—and this year was no exception!
Elementary Introduces New Leading Edge Professional Development Model Through Classroom Lab Sites Building on the momentum of strong recent headway made within our Reading and Writing disciplines, MCS teachers were excited to launch their first high level classroom “Lab Sites,” a collaborative practice commonly utilized by Lucy Calkins of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University, which ultimately fosters exponential student growth as readers, writers, and scholars. In our new Lab Sites, grade level teams came together in their classrooms with their own students and practiced teaching in front of and with each other, guided by the expert training of Mrs. Biancalani. This resulted in meaningful opportunities to share effective teaching practices, empowering them professionally within a collaborative learning community— countless “lightbulb” moments for our teachers who truly embrace a growth mindset.
instructional plans and assessments, as well as goals and objectives were aligned to this primary academic initiative. This focused on developing Scholars of the Disciplines as each academic department identified content-specific habits and practices to shape students into writers, scientists, mathematicians, historians, and theologians. This exciting initiative extended beyond the teaching of isolated content, skills, and comprehension to provide meaning and significance for content knowledge through real-world exploration, connections, and applications to build greater contextual understanding and apply knowledge.

Guided by Mrs. Harrison, professional development, departmental planning time,
Elementary continued its deep dive in developing effective and authentic student writers through classroom workshops, author shares, writing celebrations, and other creative means of celebrating student writing.

LOVE FOR CHRIST “God has used this school to shape us and we want our legacy to be one of expressing gratitude, responding in worship, and stepping out in generosity.” MCS 8th Grader
Embedded within every aspect of the MCS program is a passion to see every student grow in his understanding of who God is and form an authentic relationship with Jesus that will serve as a foundation for life.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR THE KINGDOM Students’ hearts were changed as they engaged in meaningful local service-learning opportunities, making a deep connection to what they have been learning about God’s call to be “Difference Makers” for the Kingdom within the community. Through our ongoing partnership with Shalimar Learning Center in Costa Mesa, students built bridges across cultures by connecting through Bible studies, games, sharing the love of Jesus, and simply spending time together as peers. Monthly service projects focused student support of our Difference Maker student initiatives and
Shalimar’s Surf Ministry, including bake sales, Thoughts from the Heart, Share2Wear, even a family serve day at Walk4Water.
STRENGTHENING OUR DISTINCTIVE BIBLE PROGRAM To help our students grow in their personal relationship with God, additional class time was carved out for middle school to explore the relevance of Christianity and learn how to incorporate the disciplines of the Faith in their daily lives. In preparation for high school, 8th grade honed in on discussing “hot topics,” like how to deal with pressures students face in today’s culture. To prepare and challenge elementary students for a deeper level of faith ownership, 5th grade teachers continued to partner with the Middle School Bible department to co-lead Bible instruction, challenging students’ thinking and connecting God’s Word to everyday relevant topics. We also expanded the Deep Roots Bible Program into 4th grade, giving students solid Apologetics-oriented teaching to help them articulate their faith and apply Biblical truths to their daily lives.
LAUNCHING THE “LION’S PACT” Listen - Include - Ownership - Notice - Support
Dedicated to creating a school culture where all children feel valued as sons and daughters
of the King, MCS launched the LION’S PACT this year, a unique program created by our own elementary teachers, parents, and students based on Biblical principles, topline research, and personal/professional experience. As a schoolwide program where teachers, parents, and students build an environment that honors God through inclusivity, peer respect, and compassion, students practice and learn conflict resolution and social negotiation skills, learn to understand the difference between peer conflict and bullying, and practice forgiveness as they live out their faith and seek God’s wisdom. This pilot program has been a fantastic tool for our staff to nurture kindness and Christ-honoring attitudes in all of our students!
GROWING SERVANT LEADERS Through formal and informal experiences such as ASB, PAL, and worship team, MCS students can develop their budding leadership skills in a safe environment. For all 8th grade students, Mrs. Harrison began the year by conducting a month long leadership training, culminating with our first ever 8th Grade Commissioning Service as students committed to leading the school according to 1 Timothy 4:12. In addition, we hosted a student-led “PAUSE” evening of worship in which over 75 students combined their efforts to “leave their mark” at MCS by raising $3,574 for the cross in the new Argyros Center for Worship and Performing Arts.
WHOLE CHILD An MCS education is one that focuses on developing the “whole child,” offering a wide array of enrichment experiences that can ignite passion or interest areas and inspire the innovative spirit within the heart of each child.
The Year in the Arts Led by a dedicated and highly-skilled professional team, Mariners Institute of the Arts enjoyed a fantastic year of growth and accolades! Performance opportunities were taken to a new level with the incorporation of “Informances,” musical presentations designed to educate the audience on a musical topic. This promoted parents to a deeper understanding of the educational process by which students create and perform music. ARTS HIGHLIGHTS •

190 MCS students showcased their Imaginology contest entries in Read and Draw, Cardboard Engineer, and Poetry.
Animatronics and Imaginology MCS launched its first Makeathon! Students put their Maker spirit to the test in an afterschool class this year, building animated animals using Hummingbird robotics microprocessors. Students learned and employed design, engineering, programming and technology skills, all within a fun and engaging environment. Another first for MCS was our representation in Imaginology at the OC Fair and Event Center! Our staff was thrilled to display students’ animatronics accomplishments in the midst of hundreds of STEAM-related exhibits.
Our Spring middle school production of Lion King, Jr. was a student-led experience from start to finish (running lights, sound, stage crew, spotlight), including costume design and production in the new Maker Space.
Lion Championships MCS athletics continued in elite preparation of students for high school sports, making their mark in the CALOC league with 8 championship wins for girls basketball, boys flag football, girls volleyball, boys soccer and boys volleyball. A new soccer program was a solid addition, as well.
MCS Surpasses National Standards for Coding With a full-time Maker Education facilitator in place, MCS students went above and beyond goals set by the international “Hour of Code” challenge through Computer Science Education Week. Elementary students learned to program the Wonder Workshop Dash and Dot robots and were introduced to significant computer science concepts in the process. Middle School students developed skills through after school classes and a Programming elective which integrated CAD design and 3D Printing—in fact, the cookie cutter used to make treats for the Lion King bake sale was designed and produced by these engineers!
CONNECTED COMMUNITY The MCS Community is one in which Christian families find belonging, form lifelong relationships, and cultivate true hearts of service.
Parent Enrichment Helps MCS Families Build Legacy The MCS parent community kicked off the year with a Legacy event featuring psychologist Dr. Steve Flanagan, well-known author, speaker, and parenting/ marriage blogger presenting a conversation about “worthiness.” This discussion was a perfect entre into a weekly book study for Moms of Dr. Flanagan’s book “Loveable: Embracing What is Truest About You, So You Can Truly Embrace Your Life,” which led to wonderful fellowship and spiritual growth for those involved.
PTF Supports Exemplary Programs PTF volunteers are champions of Lion Pride, whether on campus or online, dedicating hundreds of hours to making MCS the best it can be! With a redesigned newsletter and new Instagram presence (@MCS. PTF), PTF streamlined its communication efforts to even better serve the parent community. New events like the Christmas boutique provided great exposure for MCS in the community while raising important funds for: digital cameras (4) and equipment, volleyball equipment, Teacher Blessing Fund increase and more!
Introducing the Carrie Olson Honorary Service Recognition Award Within the MCS community, the name Carrie Olson is synonymous with prayer, leadership, devotion, and service. It was no surprise when Mr. Moore announced at Graduation the creation of a new Carrie Olson Honorary Service Recognition Award, to be given to the faithful volunteer(s) who demonstrate “sustained, multi-faceted exceptional work for the Lord” at Mariners Christian School. As a Board member and Leader of Parents in Prayer, Carrie was instrumental in her various leadership roles, a provider of pastoral care for MCS staff, and a faithful prayer partner for many.
Difference Maker Program Expands The distinctive MCS Difference Maker Program continued to expand, inspiring students to become lifelong Difference Makers for God’s Kingdom! As a real-world Difference Maker, we welcomed Jennifer Friend, CEO of Project Hope Alliance, to open students’ eyes to the growing problem of homelessness in Orange County. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of an MCS family, Project Hope created a lifesize model of a motel room (“214 Sq Ft”) on campus for our community to explore and the entire experience served as a springboard for ongoing conversations about empathy and leveraging students’ gifts to serve the less fortunate. This experience led into our second year of Difference Maker grant applications, which we introduced with a Design Thinking Workshop to help students further develop their ideas and applications.
INNOVATIVE CULTURE
Innovation is Everywhere at MCS!
DESIGN THINKERS WITH A MAKER MINDSET This year marked the official launch of the MCS Maker Education program! Students engaged in opportunities to collaborate, communicate, and think critically, focusing on the Design Thinking Process in order to solve realworld problems with creative solutions. Maker projects connected with general classroom content which resulted in powerful learning experiences, including a popular elective class on hydroponic gardening! As part of an organic community that encourages risk-taking, listening, and sharing, MCS students are developing a “Maker Mindset” while delving into the basics of engineering, robotics, circuitry, coding, and other 21st Century skills necessary to prepare them for the road ahead.

One of our most exciting Maker initiatives of the year was the introduction of AppJam, a unique opportunity for students to create apps for mobile devices. Under the mentorship of UCI and Cal State Fullerton computer science and engineering students, students worked in teams to develop and design STEM-related mobile game applications, culminating their experience with an app presentation at the AppJam+ Fall Showcase Finale held at UCI!
M C S PA R T N E R S W I T H G A L I L E O I N N OVAT I O N SUMMER CAMP
In January, MCS welcomed 34 students from Sunny Bridge International Education in China for a week of complete immersion in our school community. Our young guests were excited to stay with host families, and even more so to experience all that MCS has to offer, both educationally and spiritually, including Maker Space, culinary arts, chapel, and middle school apologetics classes during which students had respectful dialogue about each other’s faith. MCS students enjoyed the opportunity to answer our new friends’ questions about Christianity during a socratic style discussion and share God’s Truth in love! This program was such a success that we have already planned their next visit for January 2019.
This Summer, MCS partnered with nationally recognized Galileo to offer Summer Innovation Camps for our students and the Orange County community! With a maxed out enrollment, Galileo built a strong presence on campus through their mission to “Create a World of Fearless Innovators,” which aligns closely with MCS’s Innovation, Design Thinking Process, and Maker Culture. Students had loads of fun while programming robot pets, building escape rooms, creating recipes, and exploring other STEM-based projects.
