PROJECT: The Alms building is one of the original structures in the University of Cincinnati’s DAAP complex. Within this site, we were bounded by thirty feet from the south side of the building for the project. The task was to create an insertion piece within the existing space while including a two-story space, a studio space, and a critique space. My goal was to create an insertion that not only contrasted the existing space, but also complemented it.

I began my process by folding pieces of paper. I went through several iterations to gain an understanding of how the folds could inform space. In addition, the continuation and fluidness of the form they created influenced my future decisions.

PROJECT: OVER THE SUMMER I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK CLOSELY ON MANY INTERIOR AND ARCHITECTURE PROJECTS. THE BALDWIN’S KEEP HOUSE WAS A PROJECT STARTED OVER THE SUMMER AND WAS ONE OF THE FIRM’S FIRST RESIDENTIAL PROJECTS. THE OWNER OF THE HOUSE PLANNED TO MAKE DRASTIC RENOVATIONS TO THE HOUSE. THE OWNER ALSO WANTED A SITE PLAN AND FLOOR PLAN OF THE HOUSE, SINCE THEY DID NOT EXIST. ALONG WITH ONE OTHER COLLEAGUE, I VISITED THE HOUSE AND DIMENSIONED THE EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR SPACES, AS WELL AS NOTED IMPORTANT FEATURES OF THE SITE. FROM THERE, I WAS ABLE TO CREATE A SITE PLAN OF THE HOUSE IN ADDITION TO A MORE DETAILED FLOOR PLAN THAT SHOWED THE PLANNED RENOVATIONS.

While visiting Baldwin’s Keep House, the goal was not only to dimension both the interior and the exterior of the house, but also too document it. I helped in dimensioning and photographing of the house and surrounding site. It was important to note important features like roof lines, mechanical features, tree locations, and damages requiring repair. This information will assist in the design process of the new additions, seen right, that the owner desires.

PROJECT: GROUP EFFORT TO CREATE A SPATIAL AND INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE WITHIN A 8’ X 8’ X 8’ CUBE WITH AN ADDITIONAL WHITE MATERIAL. THE SPATIAL EXPERIENCE HAD TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT ITS CONTEXT AND SITE. AS A GROUP, OUR GOAL WAS TO HAVE THE ADDED MATERIAL AND WOOD CONSTRUCTION BALANCE EACH OTHER WHILE CONTRASTING EACH OTHER. THE ORTHAGONAL WOOD CONSTRUCTION AND THE ORGANIC NATURE OF THE PVC PIPE CONSTRUCTION CREATES A UNIQUE SPACE WHERE HUMANS CAN INTERACT WITH AND LINGER WITHIN THE SPACE.

Through our process, our main idea of having two, strong, distinct structures that work in harmony was kept throughout. Once we established the structure of pipes that would drape over our construction, we focused on the wood construction. We wanted a space people could interact with and linger within for periods of time. We went through several iterations before we reached our final design seen below. The organic nature of the PVC pipes and the orthogonal lines of the wood structure creates contrast while allowing people to still interact with both simultaneously.

Since we built our folly on site, it was important to construct our folly into smaller parts before transporting it. At the site, we worked together to assemble our folly in an efficient manner. Part of our group assembled the woods structure while other members assembled the white material in one final piece. Once the wood structure was complete, we draped the PVC pipe construction over the folly and fastened it into place while still allowing movement. Our folly was able to withstand weather conditions for the week it was on site. Throughout the week, we watched and documented as students around campus used and lingered within our folly.

PROJECT: CREATE A SPATIAL EXPERIENCE WITHIN A 12” X 12” CUBE THAT BALANCES ON A 2” X 2” BASE. I MAINTAINED A SYSTEM OF HALVES AND THIRDS IN MY BLOCK, WHILE CREATING A SPATIAL EXPERIENCE THAT ESTABLISHED DIFFERENT VIEWS FROM VARIOUS VANTAGE POINTS OF THE BLOCK.

When I began the process, I made several sketch models. I began with very volumetric models like the one on the left. As I explored the balance block more, I incorporated more lines and planes. Like the model on the right, my balance block evolved to have more negative space.

This is an iterative gouache study showing the relationships between the different planes. I was also able to see the relationships between the positive and negative spaces, which helped me reach my final design.
