CASA Model based on Menchaca’s CASA approach to designing online learning environments
CONTENT
ASYNCHRONOUS
Through the learning management system Instructure Canvas, students will be able to access the main course content and resources, organized by modules. Content will include an overview of design principles, visual examples through galleries, practical video tutorials, as well as design exercises, discussions, critiques, and assessments. Relevant, up-to-date information with best practices, along with a pool of resources to highlight different concepts and specialty areas will be included. A connectivist approach will be used.
Students will maintain a blog on the platform of their choice to document the process of their design projects from initial sketches to final prototypes. Documentation could include digitized sketches, mind maps, images, audio, and audio. Classmates can provide feedback through comments. Discussions on various topics will also take place in the Canvas LMS. Kapsul, an online social networking curation tool, along with Facebook will be used to build community.
ASSESSMENT
SYNCHRONOUS Live sessions will take place in Blackboard Collaborate and will be recorded for later review. The instructor and teaching assistants will reinforce and highlight important aspects of design, moderate design challenges and group critiques, as well as answer questions. An online design studio concept will be used taking advantage of video conferencing features.
Designed by Natalie Gauvin
Students will be evaluated on their design assignments, the depth of thought and completeness of their documentation processes, prototypes, and peer reviews. Rubrics will be provided to help students understand the expectations and meet the criteria successfully. At the end of each design module will be a practical application, where the learner will have to use a technical tool to highlight their understanding of the area of expertise. The overall quality of the course will be assessed with a Quality Matters rubric.
