We are a deeply personal brand with a true passion for helping our customers express themselves with confidence. We do what feels right, what feels new, what feels exciting. We know creativity moves us forward.
WE’RE INSPIRED BY PEOPLES, PLACES, COLOURS, MATERIALS, AND TEXTURES FROM ACROSS THE GLOBE. We love to play with our hands and see what we can sew, twist, knot, and create out of our raw materials. In a world that has become increasingly tech-focused, we believe in the power and emotion of human touch.

JESSIE RANDALL
Jessie Randall is the Co-Founder and Creative Director of Loeffler Randall. I caught up with Jessie to talk about how she’s evolved with the brand, what matters most, and what real life looks like for her. By: AMY WOODSIDE 10
B
efore Loeffler Randall was a real thing, I remember going to Italy to find our agent and factory. I was trying to make it seem like there were lots of agents and factories in the running for our non-existent business. I’m a very honest person and a terrible liar, so that was pretty ridiculous. But somehow the agent bought it, signed us on and we started the line. It feels like it was such a fairy-tale how quickly it started and took off. I wanted to succeed so badly, I couldn’t sleep at night. Brian and I worked on our business around the clock. I remember for our first trade show, I made a mini diorama of our booth, complete with miniature satin and snakeskin pillows I had sewn for the mini photocopies of the shoes to sit on. Huge milestones for us in those early days were being taken on by Steven Alan and Bergdorf Goodman. When we sold through that first season, I could finally breathe a sigh of relief.

I’m a natural leader. I’m emotionally intelligent. I’m good at the creative side. Luckily, Brian makes up for the areas that I fall short in. I made a conscious choice to start my business with a business partner who was strong where I was weak and vice versa. Some of the best advice my old boss gave me before starting LR was: “Get a business partner and make sure whatever you make comes in sizes.” Over the years, I’ve had to let go of being so hands-on with the creative. I’ve needed to let go so I can take on a bigger role in the marketing and branding and have the creative headspace to get inspired. Brian is a risk taker and a true entrepreneur. He’s more optimistic than I am. I am more rational, more risk adverse. I think it’s a good mix— we balance each other. Brian is able to be tougher than I am in a lot of situations, but in times when he’s less strong, I’m able to step up and make hard decisions. We’re good at dividing and conquering. I don’t think it ever feels forced, but it’s not something that we just let come along whenever. We design a lot of product, and 12

we think about it carefully and thoughtfully. I’m up in the middle of the night thinking about whether a color is right and if there’s a way to improve a fit, or a design that could be more functional for our girl. We are constantly trying to make every product we design better and better and better. I always say that without Brian, I’d be hand-making shoes in my kitchen—he’s the one who has the big business drive and mindset, and I’m the one that helps to make the product special. We just redesigned our office on a very tight timeline and ran up against many challenges. Our interior designer said, “It

was Jessie’s vision and Murphy’s law.” We laughed about that. When it comes to balance, I think it’s really tough and nobody knows the answer. I read somewhere that between family, friends, work, exercise—you can pick three things. I do find that’s pretty true. For me the exercise part tends to be the one that goes out the window. On the flip side, when I don’t take care of myself, I am lousy at taking care of other people. It’s a constant juggle. I feel happiest when I am in a workout routine, I am sweating several days a week, and eating healthy. It’s just very hard to fit that in. Two things I never stop prioritizing are my kids and my company. With my kids, I like to let them get bored—it’s the way I grew up, and I think it forces you to get creative. I had to make do with very little and come up with solutions as a kid—which, if I’d had a ton of art supplies or toys at my disposal, I wouldn’t have had to do.

Not all work is fun or interesting. There are large chunks of my job that are not fun. I have an ability to stick with things and push through until I get the result I want. That helps with motivation, but so does the tuition at my kids’ school! When my business is growing, I feel energized, inspired, and alive. That feeling during the process of growth is more what I’m going for—not necessarily the result of growth itself. I have accomplished more than I could have ever dreamed of with twins and a little one to boot. As long as I can provide for my kids, continue to grow as a person, be a good friend, learn new things, (and have nice shoes in my closet!) I am fulfilled and happy. I feel like turning 40 this year put a lot of things into perspective for me. I don’t waste time on people or thoughts that don’t serve me. I don’t feel very insecure at this point in my life. I have a wonderful family and kids that love me, and that’s my biggest measure of success. Yes, I’m getting a bit older An early pair of Loeffler Randall shoes.

and wish some things about my physical appearance looked a little better, but I’m doing OK. I try not to compare myself or my business to anyone else’s, I keep my head down and focus on what I’m trying to accomplish. Something I’ve been thinking about this year is how to make my job work for me instead of worrying so much about working for my job. I’m an incredibly hard worker and very driven, and know that things will always get done. This year, I’d like to spend more time in the afternoons with my kids because they really need me right now. I’m looking at ways to be more flexible, more efficient, and feel less guilt about my work. I think I’m the same person in my work life and my home life (although a lot more affectionate in my home life!) My life and my line are so intertwined at this point I 16
can’t separate them. I care a lot about being authentic and kind, but I have faults, a lot of them. But I try to own them and realize that this is who I am, and that all parts of me contribute to what ultimately make me successful. For example, I’m kind of a homebody. It seems like everyone else loves to travel. For me, and for my creative process, there is something that works about being mostly a homebody. I could never pretend to be someone I’m not—I just want to be real about who I am and how I live my life. Real life for me also means having a child with some unique challenges, but I believe that these challenges make our lives richer and more expansive. I often say to my kids: “How did I get so lucky to get you?” And I do feel lucky, regardless of the challenges we face. I think remembering to be grateful is important, and that being thankful every day is key. Real life is all of the serious things and not so serious things—like needing the Photoshop liquify tool on lots of my bio pics, ha! Real life can be unglamorous, but I love my life for what it is, and I don’t take it for granted. Nobody’s life is perfect. I think perfect is really, really boring. I love the things that make my life a little bit messy.”

COCO LULU
LANGLEY Your favourite summer shoes are now your favourite fall shoes.
M
ules are about as trendy as they can possibly get right now, but the question remains: Can you wear socks with mules? It’s a tough one, and answers vary depending on who you ask. Some might view it as a faux pas, while others might see it as, well—an opportunity for some creativity. You see, while pairing socks with mules is definitely tricky, it can be done—especially if you’re extra choosy about your socks. Standard black footies are going to feel a little like an afterthought, and even those no-show socks you wear with loafers and ballet slippers are going to look strange peeking out of your mules. 31

Langley in dusty rose paired with & other stories shimmery silver socks.
Our Langley mule is a favourite of our customers and staff. It is the greatest summer mule that can be worn from the office, and then out to a party afterwards. Try sending these shoes into fall with these glittery socks that make them that more exciting. The crazier the sock, the simpler the shoe. If you’re going for a sparkly sock, a fishnet sock, a patterned sock, or a sheer sock, stick with a flat and/or neutral-coloured Langley Mule. If the shoe is going to have a heel, it should be an un-detailed and daytime-wearable style.

COLLECTIONS
LULU
Lulu in silver paired with Rachel Comey Rhinestone socks & Lulu in leopard paired with cos blue metallic ankle socks.
34
Our Lulu style is our most popular mule by far due to the array of colours and patterns it is available in. The converse to the crazy socks rule is the crazier the shoe, the simpler the sock (sometimes). If you’ve got a fun pair of furry slides, reach for a basic neutral pair of socks (gray, white, black, tan), and skip the pizzaz. In general, the thinner the sock the better. This look isn’t about warmth so skip the camping socks and go for streamlined pairs. Though a higher-heeled shoe and sock can work, it’s less versatile and effortless than mid to low/flat.
35
COCO
COLLECTIONS

36
Coco is a new style that is becoming increasingly popular. It is a shoe that is as versatile as it gets. The mid heel makes it a popular style for the work day, which makes it even easier to dress up for the evening. With socks, the shoe can be elevated to create the ultimate style. Use a sparkly sock to catch everyones attention. Just make sure you aren’t using the same tone. Wear a nude matte sock if you wish to tone it down a bit. Don’t shy away from the sparkle on sparkle!

DUSTY ROSE I
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF was born in 1989 in Mexico City, though my parents were Colombian. When I was 5, my family landed in Barcelona and I had the good fortune of growing up there. My mother is a very creative artist who taught me to experiment in every possible way, and I feel that influenced a lot of the way I work. Until I was 18, I was studying to become a flamenco dancer, and after that I studied philosophy and communications. I landed in New York six years ago because I thought I wanted to be a filmmaker, and ended up working for Scott Schuman from The Sartorialist for three years after he took my photo on the streets. After that, I started my solo career, and later had my first exhibition in Brooklyn. I feel like every little step of the way helped me become the person I am today. 40

HOW DID YOU GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY AND WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO NYC?
I
was always interested in photography, although I never thought it could become my career; it felt like something very foreign from the typical career paths available to me in Spain. Meeting Scott Schuman and experiencing how much he encouraged me and challenged me every day made me slowly believe I could make a living and evolve as an artist.

arcelona and New York are both amazing cities, I don’t think the day will ever come when I prefer one over the other. Barcelona is full of light, in every single way; it’s a city that welcomes you and is easy to understand and love. New York is tough in the best way; you need to find your place and that constantly challenges you to find solutions, so you become very resourceful. Barcelona is a city I go back often to feel the warmth of the people I love. New York is a city I live in because all of the amazing people I’ve met from all parts of the world. I think it’s a great balance. Langley Mule, $395

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THIS SHOOT FOR LR?
W
hen I was pitched the idea of a floral story, I thought I would be beautiful to turn flowers into an object like any other and shoot them in a more conceptual and minimal way. I was very excited to mix flowers with copper since they are two very different things but both sacred in Japanese culture. I wanted to do something that was reminiscent of Noguchi’s sculptures and Irving Penn’s “Still Life” at the same time. 44

INTERIOR DESIGN At Loeffler Randall, we consistently feel inspired by the interiors we love. The warm and comparatively subtle pinks are really versatile. When its pale is becomes a warming neutral, complementing natural colours and contrasting deeper, darker colours. When its fully saturated, its vibrant and rich. Millennial pink has a glamorous side too. It works so well with golds and copper as they bring out the colours warm tones. In the 50s and 60s pink was popular in the art deco style and we’ve been seen that used again recently in trendy bars and shops.

LR LOVES Fendi
FASHION The dusky shade of postmodern girlhood represents a smart, sly kind of feminine mystique pretty, but with better things to do. It’s been embraced and analyzed by pop queens like Rihanna, CEOs like Emily Weiss, and our own Jessie Randall. And it looks great on every skin tone, with a bare face or a bold lip or glitter lids—or why not both? With both street cred and practical appeal, it’s logical for designers to keep puffing and passing the shade down the line. At LR we design a lot of our shoes and purses to come in a shade of pink. We believe that matching tones of pink is so in style, that we can’t get enough of it. Enjoy our favourite looks from SS18 by Fendi, Ralph & Russo, Giambattista Valli and Alexander Wang.

ART Art has such a large influence on our designs. The textures, forms, and abstract qualities bring us to another level. Sculptures by Anton Alvarez help us to challenge our forms, and make us see that we can really make any shape and silhouette work. The display and photography of his artwork uses a beautiful pink tone to accent the work. Combined, both the form and display inspire us to make many important design decisions.

EXTERIORS Pink exteriors have us dreaming of sunny days on vacation. The pink buildings that run across Europe and the Carribbean have us always in vacation mode. We are inspired by everything we experience, and a large part of our lives is travelling. The pink exteriors have such interesting forms that influence our design decisions and overall brand aesthetic very often. Andria Darius Pancrazi, a French photographer from Corsica, now based in Oxford, UK, is known for his minimalist island photos that capture the real aesthetisized beauty of his home island. La Muralla Roja, Spanish for ‘The Red Wall,’ is a housing project located within the La Manzanera development in Spain’s Calpe. The striking colors that cover the outer and inner facades are selected to either contrast with nature or complement its purity.

If there’s anyone whose laid-back aesthetic embodies California cool, it’s Jenni Kayne. We’re huge fans of the designer’s collection of cozy knits and chic staples. We sat down with Jenni to talk everything from entrepreneurship to creative inspiration. “I started the company when I was 19. I felt that the traditional wholesale model didn’t allow customers to truly understand what the brand was about. It didn’t tell the whole story. I was inspired to open my own store and opened the West Hollywood location 11 years ago! I loved the process of building and designing the store. Since then, we have continued expanding around the state of California. Rip & Tan began as a passion project and a place to share everything I was inspired by or doing, but as it became more popular and the lifestyle component of the business grew, it became a big piece of the business. It is a huge part of telling the story of the brand.” 64

Huldra of Norway make pillows unlike any you’ve seen before. The duo behind them, Hildie Gifstad & Ashley Reed, are best friends and we found out what fuels their collaboration.
Right now we are focused on developing a savvy business foundation and expanding each other’s creative instincts through collaboration. Going into business with a friend can always be a little scary, and we are different in so many ways. Hildie is always coming up with new ideas and focused on creative elements, while Ashley is more organized and helps keep the structure in the company. We keep each other balanced. We think especially when you’re working with a good friend it’s important to speak up, but not take things personally. Good communication and trust are key for any relationship. Also, sharing a couple bottles of wine at business meetings helps. 66

YOUR PILLOWS ARE THE WONDERFULLY ECCENTRIC ADDITION TO ANY LIVING SPACE—WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR PRODUCTS? We draw a lot of our inspirations from ‘70s interiors and modern design. But pretty much anything we see can inspire us. We might be walking by something on the street that triggers a creative flow: we use random moments of inspiration to develop new ideas and products. We are both pretty minimal ladies that appreciate an unexpected flare. The ‘70s aesthetic resonates with how we live— adding fringe to a clean simple look just makes sense, whether it’s a pillow or a t-shirt.

MEGAN O’NEILL
LR LOVES
We talk with LR ambassador Megan O’Neill, beauty and fitness editor at Elle, about her bold personal style, her love of Pharrell, and the importance of owning it.
I love spotting things on the street or in the subway that stretch my imagination and make me think of wearing something in a way I’ve never worn it before. I remember I was walking along a seedy section of Avenue D and saw this little old lady— she was shuffling along, hunched over, and looked pretty woebegone, but she was wearing a coat that draped around her so beautifully. And her hair was molded into the sort of ratty yet majestic bouffant that an Upper East Side lady might wear in a neater, stodgier version. I saw some drag queens on the L train two weekends ago, and they were dressed to the nines in slinky silver pants and clompy platform heels and tiny tube tops. They looked great. You could tell they felt good about what they were wearing, and because of that they made me believe, while I was there, that I wanted to wear silver skintight super cool hip huggers, too. 68
Megan O’Neill in the Lulu Mule in Melon.
WHERE DO YOU FIND SARTORIAL INSPIRATION EVERYDAY? My old faithfuls on the inspiration board are Rihanna, Pharrell (I think he’s so so so cool. He seems to be having a blast pairing his shredded rhinestone-spangled jeans with a Chanel sweatshirt and a tangle of plastic rosary-ish beads piled around his neck), Gwen Stefani, Rihanna, Cher in her sequined variety-show-era glory, and Freddie Mercury.

KINDAH KHALIDY
LR LOVES
We visit the studio of artist Kindah Khalidy, whose joyful, hyper-chromatic, expansive works will bring you all the feels. I originally was on track to do fashion design, but was unable to find the fabrics that I wanted. I then studied textile design and painting, and now these two fields are my main focus. I love making tactile things for people, and painting is more expressive in that you don’t worry too much about creating a product. Color drives my process – I’m constantly scanning throughout the day for striking or odd color combos. It could be someone’s outfit or scattered recyclables on the ground; inspiration could be anywhere. 70
WHAT PART OF BEING A PAINTER BRINGS YOU THE MOST JOY? I get to express myself, in an uninhibited way. When I start painting, it’s not about how much makeup I have on, or how much my outfit costs—I think women especially need a break from all of that. We’re constantly being bombarded with ideas of what we should be like. Making art allows me to step out of my body for a bit and translate my ideas visually.

SARAH SLUTSKY
LR LOVES
As a stylist for Emma Watson, Elizabeth Olsen, and more, it’s safe to say that Sarah Slutsky has a pretty cool job. Even cooler? The girl herself. She’s got a million side projects going on, from learning to play the ukulele to exploring NYC block by block. Sarah, who can’t fall asleep unless she knows exactly what she’s wearing the next day, shows us around her go-to neighbourhood haunts... on a skateboard, naturally. “Right after college, I began interning at Vogue. I’m so lucky that I got introduced to many of my clients from that experience. I was able to form this friendship and understanding with them very early on. Growing up, I didn’t really know what I wanted to be. I just knew I wanted to tell stories through fashion, and it turns out I can do exactly that as a stylist. I love it. WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’D GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO “MAKE IT” IN THE FASHION WORLD? Be open and even a little vulnerable—those are the keys. Listen to constructive criticism and develop what you know is already inside of you. Personally, if I had listened to the standard ‘here’s what you do when you grow up’ speech, I’d be working in an industry doesn’t make any sense for me. When I think about my career path, it’s certainly unusual, but I’m so grateful I took the road less traveled and got to where I am today. So I think my all-time piece of advice would be, as cheesy as it sounds, to just keep taking risks.

LOTTA NIEMINEN
LR LOVES
We visited New York based graphic designer and illustrator, Lotta Nieminen, in her airy studio and talked all things design, inspiration, and personal style.
I wanted to get into the movie department to study film-making, but I quickly realized my main interest was in designing the beginning and end credits. I was very kindly pointed towards the graphic design department instead. My illustration came along a bit later, while I went on exchange to the Rhode Island School of Design. The semester at RISD seemed like a great opportunity to experiment more within it, eventually making it an equal professional identity alongside graphic design. 74

CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR MOM BEING AN ARTIST, HOW THAT HAS INSPIRED OR MOTIVATED YOU? Color has always been important in my work—and that’s definitely something I feel like I’ve taken from my mom. When we were little, she would stop me and my sisters to look if she’d spot a “gorgeous shade of green.” I would assume that’s where the fondness comes from! We loved to draw, and my mom was always very adamant on us working with quality tools: she’d sharpen our crayons, make sure the markers weren’t dry, and gave us piles of nice empty sheets to draw on. But I think she was still mostly encouraging us to draw because it would be the only thing that would keep my sister and I quiet for hours on end: we were quite the little rascals otherwise!

OUR HUMBLE ABODE The Loeffler Randall front desk.
Loeffler Randall, a modern fashion brand for women who lead dynamic lives, hired interior design firm JIDK, to design their new fashion showroom and offices in New York City. By: JULIA MILLAY WALSH
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK IN SOHO LOOK LIKE FOR YOU? Each week is different depending on the calendar. I spend a lot of time with my merchant and design teams—they are my right hand. We are looking at prototypes, making mood boards, choosing raw materials. I also work with our marketing team on things like look books for each season, features for our website on creative people who inspire me, etc. I share an office with my business partner and husband, Brian. We work on the running of the business together, it’s great. 86
The Loeffler Randall showroom.
WHO DID YOU WORK WITH ON THE DESIGN? We worked with Poonam Khanna from The Union Works on the interiors and with our architect, Thomas Juncher Jensen, from JIDK. From the second I met Poonam, I knew instantly it was a match. I have a total girl crush on Poonam—she is beautiful and kind, has a wonderful, calm manner, and she has the most amazing and under-
stated taste. I had complete trust with her. The first time I met with her she put a piece of plywood, a piece of felt, and a square of bronze onto the table and said, ‘I think this is the showroom.’ I loved her idea—she encapsulated my brand in those three items: the beauty and everyday, unfussy elegance of the materials.
GIVEN THAT YOUR HUSBAND IS YOUR BUSINESS PARTNER, WHAT DOES WORK-LIFE BALANCE LOOK LIKE TO YOU? We are devoted to our kids and to LR. It’s our entire focus. It leaves less time for fitness and socializing sometimes, but I don’t care. What matters to me is being a good mom first and foremost, and being good at my job secondly. I think because my husband and I are so aligned on what matters to us—the kids and the company—we end up having a nice balance in life. We also make a rule never to talk about work outside of the office.

YOUR OFFICE IS QUITE MINIMALIST, WITH A TIGHT COLOR PALETTE — WHITE, PASTEL PINK, BRONZE, LIGHT WOODS. DO YOU FIND YOURSELF DRAWN TO THIS SOFT PALETTE IN LIFE AND IN YOUR HOME AS WELL? Poonam and I wanted to be very strict about the palette. Everything had to work within the construct of the material and color palette we composed: blond wood, natural vachetta leather, bronze hardware, marble, and a touch of deep nude paint. These neutral colors are synonymous with the brand, and they are the colors I am drawn to in my life as well. I like a neutral palette because it’s chic and elegant and it calms me.

88
FUNCTIONALLY, WHAT WERE YOUR GOALS FOR THE SPACE? I wanted a beautiful personal office where I could work and clear my head and be inspired. I wanted large open work spaces and lots of windows. I wanted a showroom that would have natural light but also not compromise on shelf space. I wanted my design team to be sequestered away from the business functions of the office so that they could have the space to be creative. I also wanted natural meeting areas for members of my team. For example, we have a large communal table in our kitchen for people to eat lunch together. We are often throwing birthday toasts and baby showers in there. Our large entryway doubles as a yoga studio for my team on Tuesday nights. Most important, I wanted the space to evoke our brand in 360 degrees, and I wanted a space that would inspire and energize us all. 89

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR COMPANY CULTURE? I would say it’s a family atmosphere here. Each person who works at LR is a good and kind person. We work really hard, but we all also have a life outside of work. I think company culture is so important, and it has to be cultivated. One person with a bad attitude can really cause a lot of dam-
age. I like to put my energy into developing people with a strong commitment to LR, a passion for this business, superior talent, and good manners. I also like to hire people with a sense of humor. We laugh a lot here and try not to take ourselves too seriously.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE AESTHETIC YOU WERE GOING FOR IN THE LR OFFICE?
I wanted the office to embody my style and taste and to be a visual representation of the brand. When people come into the office now, they always say ‘This is so you!’ or ‘This is so LR!’ To me that means that we got it right.
90

WHAT’S YOUR BEST TIP FOR MAINTAINING PRODUCTIVITY? The thing that keeps me productive is my desire to get my work done well so that I can go home and take care of my kids well. Motherhood really has a way of making one incredibly efficient. I also think we are productive in part because we have a beautiful, inspiring, light-filled office. We all work really hard here, and then when we are done, we go home and enjoy our lives. It’s really important to me that my team has time and space to be fulfilled outside the office. Work-life balance is so key.

A GUIDE TO SOHO MANHATTAN A definitive guide to some of the best stores, restaurants, and cafes in the SoHo neighbourhood of Manhattan, New York City.
E
very individual little neighborhood in NYC has its charm, but there’s arguably a supercluster of neighborhoods below 14th street that stretches from the west side into the center of the Manhattan, roughly encompassing: West Village, Greenwich Village, Soho, Nolita, and Little Italy. Old school West Village is the kind of neighborhood, despite its small size, that you want to get lost wandering around all day, admiring its quintessentially compact, ivy-clad apartment buildings, with plenty of cafe- and wine bar-pit stops along the
way. Attached to the northwest corner of the West Village, the Meatpacking District is home to the end of the Highline and the new Whitney, and is still a buzz-y night-life destination for a younger set. Heading east, there’s Greenwich Village, NYU’s territory, and the oft-photographed Washington Square Park. South of Houston Street can admittedly get a little touristy, but you’ll still find some of the best shopping in Soho; Little Italy, decorated in strings of lights, is unapologetically festive; and tiny Nolita complements them both. Check out some of the essential places to see and things to do in this area of NYC. SoHo Manhattan
