EDUCATION
DELAWARE VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT WITH INCREASED SECURITY A PRIORITY FOR SCHOOL DISTRICTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY, administrators are taking a close look at their technology to ensure it can deliver in an emergency. Concerns over active shooters and other violent scenarios have districts paying attention and putting heightened security measures in place. Delaware Valley’s new Valerus system provides a unified district-wide VMS solution that makes it easy to view and manage all cameras through a single platform. The software’s flexible, thin-client interface makes it possible for the school district’s police officers to monitor the system from anywhere, including on their phones. They also have the option to share video with local or state law enforcement in an emergency. Recorded video can be quickly searched to find evidence of vandalism or crime. The end-to-end solution, which includes 400 cameras and several NVRs, has been designed to minimize bandwidth between buildings. High-resolution Vicon video cameras are capable of capturing license plates, faces and other important details. “Our school board takes safety and security very seriously. They want top-notch safety, and Valerus delivers that.” - Chris Lordi, Director of Administrative Services, DVSC
“The Valerus user interface is excellent. It’s simple to use but it is very advanced. Someone who isn’t technically savvy can easily navigate through it.” - Demos Lorentzos, School Board President, Greek American Institute
PLACE OF WORSHIP/EDUCATION
GREEK AMERICAN INSTITUTE THE CAMPUS OF THE GREEK AMERICAN INSTITUTE RECENTLY UPDATED ITS VIDEO SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM TO A VICON SOLUTION, featuring Valerus video management software and a variety of high-resolution, high-performance Vicon IP cameras. The property includes a private Pre-K through Eighth grade school, church and community center. The new system is designed to provide protection of the buildings, which are located on the busy service road of a major NYC expressway, and, more importantly, the students, faculty and community members who use them. The system is monitored from a large screen mounted in the school’s administration office. Depending on who logs into the system, Valerus is configured to show different views and camera tours. The school secretary and church secretary can each see video from cameras that pertain to their areas of responsibility. The School Board President, head of IT and building manager can view all cameras, and have the additional flexibility to log into the system from home. Vicon 360° cameras provide cost-effective coverage in large open areas, like the cafeteria, by dewarping the video into wide panoramic views without any blind spots. The Valerus software makes it easy to investigate incidents with a variety of search and playback tools, including synchronized playback from multiple cameras. SAFE CITIES
STATE OF SINALOA, MEXICO CULIACAN, SINALOA’S CAPITAL AND LARGEST CITY, IS THE SITE OF A NEW STATEWIDE SURVEILLANCE OPERATION and command center that uses Vicon’s Valerus to bring together disparate citywide surveillance systems in use across the state. The project aims to create a secure, centralized solution that facilitates more effective collaboration between various law enforcement agencies as they combat the influence of powerful drug cartels entrenched within the region. Vicon’s Valerus VMS was chosen for its affordable licensing, web-based thin-client interface, range of features and true open standards. The solution allows the state’s security team to access the platform from anywhere, using computers it already had in place, resulting in savings it can invest in additional coverage zones. With thousands of cameras connected, the Valerus dashboard helps to identify bottlenecks, communication issues and bandwidth consumption, ensuring that the system stays fully operational and optimized. The Valerus system is integrated with over 2000 specialty cameras that are part of Culiacan’s License Plate Recognition system. The cameras were custom-engineered by Vicon for use with software already in use by the city. Integration with other applications are in the works, including facial recognition, sound sensors that can geo-locate the source of gun shots, and more widespread use of panic buttons throughout the community. “We hope to use every function of Valerus to help lower the crime rate and better protect the citizens of Sinaloa.” ~ M.C. Galvez, Secretary of Innovation, State of Sinaloa
“We wanted to make sure we have a good, safe environment. The ability to control access in and out of the building was our main focus, while keeping it easy for our employees.” - Greg Bingaman, Information Technology Specialist, City of Spokane Valley
GOVERNMENT
CITY OF SPOKANE VALLEY CITY HALL THE NEW CITY HALL IN SPOKANE VALLEY, WASHINGTON, LEVERAGES TIGHTLY-INTEGRATED VALERUS VMS and VAX Access Control systems to simplify security operations. Cameras are mapped to doors, providing a single interface from which to monitor when badges are used to enter secure areas, as well as to visually verify who is entering. The solution balances the need to secure the building for employees while allowing for public access during hours of operation. With a lean IT staff administering the system, the system’s Active Directory integration supports more efficient operation. HR can easily assign employee badges with the right user credentials and badges for terminated employees can be deactivated at the same time as their network privileges are disabled. The VAX system has been programmed to provide customized functionality. Department heads can temporarily lock office suites on the second and third floors by triple swiping their card at the door reader. Elevators limit access to the basement to card holders and to the upper floors after business hours. In case of an emergency, a facility lock down can be initiated from various locations in the building. HEALTHCARE
MHP MEDICAL CENTER THIS STATE-OF-THE-ART INDIANA HOSPITAL COMPLEX, WHICH INCLUDES A MAIN HOSPITAL, oncology center, orthopedic center and administrative/data center, uses Valerus to provide centralized security management across its entire campus. MHP’s system includes Valerus VMS software, NVRs with high-storage capacity and close to 200 indoor and outdoor cameras. The system provides coverage of every entrance and exit of all buildings, plus coverage in many public and semi-public areas. Cameras mounted in lobbies, waiting areas, certain corridors, the pharmacy and all rooms with drug cabinets can be monitored through MHP’s main security room, along with cameras located across the campus grounds and in parking lots. Smaller, local monitoring stations are set up in the ICU, emergency room and pharmacy. Valerus’ administrator tools allow for different permission and access levels for operators based upon their responsibilities and need to view certain areas of the hospital. The Valerus network will soon be expanded to additional buildings and offers unlimited scalability as the medical center’s future needs for security increase in size and complexity.

PROPERTY MANAGEMENT
JASPER HIGHLANDS A VALERUS VMS SYSTEM AND POWERFUL VICON CAMERAS ENABLE THE MANAGEMENT OF THUNDER ENTERPRISES to keep an eye on all critical areas of its secluded, 9000 acre mountaintop gated community. The system brings together video from recreational, operational and event facilities throughout the property, which can be viewed and managed from the Sales and Design Center at the base of the mountain, as well as from web-enable PCs and mobile devices. Cameras mounted at the property gates capture vehicle information, including license plate, make, model and color of all cars and trucks passing in either direction. This allows the sales office to be aware of all visitors to the development, and helps the operations crew keep track of contractors and workers coming in and out every day. Residents value the security provided by the system. The development includes its own open air pavilion, tennis courts and game fields, fire-station and soon-to-be restaurant, wellness center, market and exercise facility. All are covered by the security system. A 12 MP camera perched at the top of the mountain provides a sweeping view of the area. Residents who only live at Jasper Highland part time or have not yet built homes on their property can log into the camera from wherever they are and feel connected with the community. RELIGIOUS INSTITUTE
CATHEDRAL OF SAINT JOHN THE DIVINE New York City’s Cathedral of Saint John the Divine is the largest Cathedral in the world and the site of a new Valerus Video Management System designed to provide safety for the property’s many visitors, staff, residents and students, as well as its many valuable artifacts. The system makes use of a wide range of Vicon high-resolution IP cameras, including some with powerful zoom that provide detailed coverage of surrounding city streets, and those that can perform in the low and challenging light of the Cathedral. Live and recorded video from the Valerus system is frequently shared with the NYPD and local security forces from Columbia University and other neighboring institutions. The Cathedral hosts services every day of the year and is also the site of concerts, art exhibits and many high-profile events. The funeral of James Gandolfini, TV’s Tony Soprano, was held there and attended by a huge number of celebrities. Visiting dignitaries have included Nelson Mandela, The Most Reverend Desmond Tutu and President Bill Clinton. Cameras are particularly helpful in protecting the Cathedral from liability in slip-and-fall incidents. They also document, for the police, any incidents that arise from the Cathedral’s service to the mentally ill and indigent.
