Media location and mise en scene

LOCATIONS AND MISE EN SCENE

LOCATION CHOICES + We decided to choose to throw a house party which entailed

using a house. The house needed to have the correct structure in the house which could enable us to use different rooms that were similar but had some subtle changes which would show the audience how the characters have moved location and aren't in one room consistently. + We chose to only film in a house as this fit the genre as well as how we had planned our narrative. Although we had the opportunity to film outside and that could have been part of our video, we decided against this as it would have been difficult to conduct the right lighting that produced no shadows without the use of Key lighting, Fill lighting and Back lighting

MISE EN SCENE + We chose to feature quite a few pieces of Mise en scene but some of

these were of a similar nature therefore allowing them to be categorised due to their similarity. + Our most frequent piece of Mise en scene is alcohol bottles. This is because of the narrative of our music video but it also relates to the underlying meaning of the song which is about drugs and alcohol. The alcohol bottles reinforce the meaning of the song and allow for the visuals to relate to the video and the lyrics as well as staying in the genre, which is indie/indie pop. + We also regularly feature the stereotypical American red cups which have connotations of partying and are also a symbol for being very clichĂŠ in American films. + I have a separate blog post on our choice of costumes as there was nothing hugely distinct about each of the costumes apart from the main characters who all wore different styles of clothing making them

STRENGTHS + Our mise en scene is recognisable to teens + Provides intertextual references in our music

video + Our mise en scene (wine bottles) link to our lyric which follows goodwins theory of the visuals linking to the lyrics.

WEAKNESS + The mise en scene took an exaggerated

amount of time to set up meaning that it was quite late when we started filming which means that we didn’t have a massive amount of hours to film due to us filming on school nights. + May not be applicable or recognisable to everyone due to different lifestyle choices or interests.

LOCATIONS We struggled to find locations for our music video as originally we had wanted to use a considerably large stately house but we eventually settled for a fellow media student's house who had kindly offered for us to use it. Unfortunately, it was quite difficult to transport people as the location was quite a far away and we were unhappy with the footage we had collected. We decided to have a re-shoot at my house as the location was easier to access and transport people to and from.

MY HOUSE + We eventually decided to use my house as the primary location

for our music video. This is because it was easy to access and had the right structure which fit our planned narrative of having multiple intertwining stories/events within the party. We featured a large amount of our narrative in the kitchen and the living room, this is because they were spacious and allowed us access to play around with composition as well as have different blocking for each character/ groups of characters which allowed for different tones to be created and attitudes when displaying each group of characters. + The other rooms that we used such as the bathroom and the hallway fortunately had sufficient spacing for the ideas that we had and the part of the narrative that it involved. This made filming slightly easier but on the other hand some of the shots

STRENGTHS + Spacious + Easily accessed + Variety of plain and colored wallpapered walls

making singular profile shots easier + Not far away from school making it a not far journey

WEAKNESS + Not as many rooms as would have liked + Not all rooms were of a sufficient spacing + Still difficult for some people to get to
