Life in the City of Lights_

What an experience. This book holds the photographic journal of my time spent on exchange in Paris. These photos have no order as my exchange was a whirlwind with something new and unexpected happening every day. Life in Paris was not what I expected, which was the best thing - in Paris you can expect the unexpected. However, for the most part, life in Paris was surprisingly normal. I had my local shops where I had made friends with the owners and who would greet me every morning as I walked passed on my way to school. It’s the little things that mean a lot when you are in a foreign country. Paris is a city with so much to discover, I only managed to see half while I was there. It was an intense five months where I wanted to fully immerse myself in the Parisian way of life and the French culture. I had gone on exchange alone which made the urge to make friends even stronger. During my stay in Paris, I lived in two apartments, both with French students and both in completely different areas of the city. This gave me a chance to fully experience the French culture whilst improving my French skills.

At school, we were a small group of international students from all over the world. The nationalities were Australian, Columbian, Spanish, Austrian, French, Italian and Chinese and although we didn’t share the same classes, we became close by discovering Paris together. In the summer months we would have picnics in Buttes Chaumont or Jardin du Luxembourg whilst learning about each of our lives and cultures in our countries back home. Towards the end of my exchange period, I had began to fully settle in and my French was rapidly improving. I went to visit my friend Jo in Nantes in the west for the second time. Life there is a lot more chilled out and we managed to relax and enjoy ourselves in the scorching sunshine. Once I was home I had a few days before I had to pack up. I walked all over the city, avoiding the metro and taking in everything and anything. The worst part about exchange is saying goodbye to all the friends you have made and to the city that you have called home for the past five months. It was time to leave Paris, for now...
