THE BELL & ROSS INSTRUMENT WATCH
FROM THE COCKPIT TO THE WRIST Because Bell & Ross watches meet the demands of those working under extreme conditions, Bell & Ross has established a reputation among professional users. Today astronauts, fighter pilots, divers, mine-clearing experts and elite police officers use Bell & Ross watches as a tool in their work.
By associating a high-tech material with fine craftsmanship, Bell & Ross has created a new instrument with innovative properties. The BR 03 is an icon that pushes the boundaries of resistance over time.
In their quest to create the ideal utilitarian watch —drawing on their experience in the aeronautical and military fields— engineers, master watchmakers, designers and professional aviators pooled their expertise to define a novel concept: the instrument watch. Since aeronautical instrumentation is the gold standard in terms of readability, reliability and performance, the BR 03 instrument watch echoes the design principles of a plane’s cockpit clock. A utilitarian watch, perfectly suited for professional use, it is the ideal embodiment of the brand’s philosophy: functionality drives design.
A HIGH-TECH CERAMIC CASE Stamping its modern vision on professional watchmaking, Bell & Ross enhanced the BR 03 instrument watch with a high-tech, hard-wearing material: ceramic. In aeronautics, and especially aerospace, ceramics are the material of choice for parts that must withstand extremely high temperatures, exposure to acids, corrosion and erosion. Bell & Ross has reworked the ceramic, developing a specific manufacturing process which enhances the intrinsic qualities of this remarkable material, which does not fade, and weighs less than other materials.
The BR 03 CERAMIC is built around the movement and its steel container is protected by a shell, a cover and a ceramic case back. The eight that are screws visible on the outside of the ceramic case act like a clamp to seal the watch, guaranteeing its complete solidity and water resistance. A genuine tool, the BR 03 responds to the legibility requirements of professional aviators: • The matte black finish of the case found on aircraft instrument panels optimizes reading the dial by preventing reflection • The sober design, black dial, large numerals, shape of the hands and photoluminescent coating allow immediate reading of the time, both during the day and at night.
A TIMELESS ICON The BR 03 instrument watch is not exclusively reserved for professional users and has become an iconic watch for numerous collectors. Fitted with a high-quality Swiss movement, this instrument watch designed for professionals asserts its utilitarian and functional purpose by embodying four fundamental principles: legibility, functionality, precision, and reliability. It is 42 mm diameter and adapts to all sizes.

Chris has been in the wine trade for over 25 years, beginning when a trip to Europe after high school graduation developed into a life-long passion for wine. He has worked in virtually all of its aspects including winemaking, restaurant, import, wholesale, and retail. In 1996, he became only the thirteenth American to have passed the demanding Master of Wine Examination. Today, there are still only 29 Americans out of a total of approximately 235 people worldwide who have passed this most demanding wine examination since it was first given in London in 1953. The exam not only covers winemaking and grape growing, but the business of selling, marketing and distributing wine as well. It also demands that successful candidates identify (in a series of blind tastings held over three days), the grape(s) used, where they were grown (country and region), vinification methods employed, the vintage or age, alcohol, acidity, sweetness and the quality/ maturity in a line up of 36 wines. Chris has also worked as a lecturer and educator for a wide array of clients including American Express, Merrill Lynch, Georgio Armani, IBM, Accenture, The Television Food Network, J.P Morgan, The Consulate Generale of Monaco, The Wall Street Journal, Crystal Cruise Lines, and many more. His success as a wine educator/lecturer can be attributed to a unique understanding of what people want to know about wine, a talent that evolved during years of working with clients of his retail shops.

CELLARNOTES BY CHRIS CREE MASTER OF WINE
PIEDMONT
Italy’s greatest and most highly regarded wines
L
ocated in the Northwest of Italy, the Piedmont region is the home of two of the most renowned red wines in the world, Barolo and Barbaresco. Sought after by connoisseurs and collectors, these magnificent wines are fairly expensive and can need years of bottle age before they are ready to drink. Yet what really puts Piedmont on the map for the majority of wine lovers is that it also produces a wide range of wines that are affordable, ready to drink, food friendly, and perfect for everyday enjoyment. Like all great wine regions, the style and quality of Piedmontese wines is the result of millions of years of geologic evolution combined with the influences of climate (Mediterranean meets Alps), the grape varieties grown, and the traditions and wine making methods used to craft them. Piedmont, which means "foothills" in Italian, lies at the intersection of two great geological forces where the African and European continents collide. This massive force not only created the Alps, which are visible on a clear day from much of the region, but also pushed up an ancient seafloor to the surface creating a jumbled series of steep hills with a mix of different soils, slopes, altitudes and exposures that are perfect for growing grapes. The subtle differences between vineyard sites favor grapes with different ripening requirements, and a host of grape varieties are planted in the region depending on the specific microclimate where they are planted. While Piedmont is best known for its reds, there are also delicious white, rosè, sparkling, and sweet wines too. Piedmontese whites are typically crisp, clean and on the light, refreshing side. Some of the best known are made from local varieties such as Arneis, Cortese (the grape in Gavi), and a few lesser known indigenous grapes including Erbaluce and Favorita. There are some international varieties including Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc too. Moscato is widely planted and is mainly used in the production of sparkling sweet wine called Moscato d'Asti. Red grapes include Grignolino, Brachetto, Grachetto, Friesa, Croatina, and Vespolina to name a few obscure local varieties, plus Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Pinot Noir as the international representatives. But the bulk of red wine is made from Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo. Both Dolcetto and Barbera are fairly early ripeners, making lovely fresh, lively wines that have the dual benefit that wine makers can sell them a year or so after harvest (and get paid sooner) and that wine lovers can drink them pretty much when they are released. Since they ripen earlier, they can be grown in vineyards in cooler sites and are a little less demanding than Nebbiolo. Dolcetto has a dark, edgy cherry character with moderate tannins and modest acidity. It can be made in a slightly rustic style with more structure, or in a more modern style that is juicier and more fruit driven. Either way it can be drunk young and fresh within a few years of the vintage. Barbera is typically a bit higher in acid and slightly lower in tannins than Dolcetto. Most Barbera is pretty simple and straight forward yet deliciously juicy wine with bright red fruits and cherry notes. When it is planted in top vineyard sites it can morph into a wine with much more stature, depth and power. Barbera can be vinified in a more traditional style in large neutral barrels or concrete, or in a modern style and aged in barrique, and the best can age and improve for 8-10 years.
Nebbiolo, the sole grape in Barolo and Barbaresco, is a late ripening varietal. It is widely believed that it took its name from the mist and 42 Valley Social Magazine
fog (Nebbia in Italian) that is typical in the late fall when the grape finally ripens. While Dolcetto and Barbera can thrive in cooler sites, Nebbiolo destined Barolo and Barbaresco needs the best of the warm, sunny, south facing vineyards to capture the heat and fully mature. It produces wines that can range in style from fresh and lively and ready to drink (Langhe Nebbiolo for example), to solid, tensely structured and firmly tannic wines that need a decade or two to reach their peak when planted in the Barberesco and Barolo DOCGs. The main determining factors in the quality and style of Nebbiolo are vintage conditions, vine age, vinification method, and perhaps most importantly, vineyard location. When made in the lighter style it undergoes shorter fermentation and maceration in order to keep its red fruit and freshness. Nebbiolo destined for Barolo and Barbaresco undergo much longer fermentation and maturation, with several years of barrel and bottle aging required by law before they can be sold, and only the best Nebbiolo grapes are used. Most of the wine made in Piedmont is in the vineyards around the towns of Asti, Alba and Alessandria, but there are five main regions: Canavese (including Carema and Caluso), Colline Novarese, Coste della Sesia in the north, Langhe - including the hill country around the city of Alba and the Roero, and Monferrato which includes the areas around Asti and Alessandria. The region has 45 Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) and 12 Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG). The DOCG wines are: Asti, Barbaresco, Barbera d'Asti, Barbera del Monferrato Superiore, Barolo, Acqui, Dogliani, Ovada, Gattinara, Gavi, Ghemme and Roero. The Barolo DOCG has several sub zones - Castiglione Falletto, La Morra, Monforte d'Alba and Serralunga d'Alba - and each has its own unique terrior and style. Barbaresco also has several sub zones Barbaresco, Treiso, and Neive - again with subtle influences on the style of wines produced. In both Barolo and Barbaresco, producer is important as styles can range from very traditional, austere and almost rustic to much more extracted, riper and more modern styles. The grape, with its firm tannins, good acidity and relatively low color component makes wines that are rarely inky dark purple, rather they have a little more garnet and lighter hues, almost brick hints at the edges. Barolo and Barbaresco are often described as "big wines" but to me, while definately intense, they are more nervy, racy and highly strung, less generous and more reserved and tight especially when young, and with more dried fruits, earth and leather notes than sheer power and opulence. In this sense they can be a bit stand-offish at first for lovers of riper, oakier, more fruit oriented wines. The wines of Piedmont are fantastic partners at the table. From light fresh whites that are perfect as an apertif, with fish, appetizers, risotto or pasta with seafood, to medium bodied reds like Barbera or Dolcetto which are great with light meats, pasta with red sauce or pizza, and Barolo and Barbaresco with griiled lamb, veal chops or beef, they are well worth getting to know. For after dinner there are sweetly sparkling Moscato d'Asti with its peachy pear notes, or Brachetto d'Aqui, a sweet sparkling red that us like liquid raspberries. A series of great vintages has made a wealth of wine available for affordable everday drinking as well as for the collector looking to stock the cellar with age worthy gems making this a great time to explore this excellent wine region. Cheers! va l l e y s o c i a l m a g.c o m

ou may know the man on that bottle by name, but to know the actual legend of Captain Henry Morgan is to know the privilege it is to be holding that glass. The man on that bottle was the Governor of Jamaica: a young 17th Century Welshman who set out for the West Indies and changed the landscape of the Caribbean and the New World. His unwavering ambition and leadership took him to every port-of-call, writing a legend, and reputation, that would precede him the rest of his days. He was, simply, the most legendary pirate to ever sail the seas. A distinction that earned him not just a lifetime of loyal crew by his side, but also the title of Sir Henry Morgan and Governor of Jamaica. It is the legend and character of this man on which the famous Captain Morgan Rum Company is built. Captain Henry Morgan lived a life of adventure on the open seas. He ruled the oceans in search of "To Life, Love and Loot" and toasted his conquests along the way. wo and a half centuries ago, in 1764, King Louis XV authorized the foundation of the French crystal house Baccarat. To celebrate its sestercentennial, the company is hosting yearlong festivities that include exhibitions, grand openings, and special releases. The first of these new releases is the eye-catching Baccarat Harcourt Chessgame, created in collaboration with the Japanese designer Oki Sato. The chess set’s pieces are based on Baccarat’s Harcourt 1841 collection of stemware, the oldest collection in the company’s archives. Each of the six classes of chess piece is a variation on the traditional Harcourt glass, with the rook most resembling the original. The other designs modify the bowl

of the glass in a way that evokes the piece it represents. For example, the king piece’s bowl is carved to look like a crown, the bishop’s like a mitre, and the knight’s like a horse. Pieces are rendered in either midnight-blue or clear crystal, and each full set of 32 takes 100 hours to cut by hand. The squares found on a traditional chessboard are delineated on the Harcourt board by panes of Plexiglas that allow light to diffuse and lend the board an ethereal, shimmering quality. erived from the Falcon 7X, the new model features a 42.6 ft. (13 meter)-long cabin, as compared to the 39.1 ft. (11.9 meter)-long passenger section of the earlier model. Significantly, an increase in fuel capacity combined with engine tweaks and aerodynamic refinements have upped range from the 7X’s 5,950 nm to 6,450 nm for the 8X, and that’s with three crewmembers, eight passengers, a Mach 0.80 cruise and NBAA IFR reserves upon arrival. The range boost means the 8X can carry that same contingent from New York to Dubai, Sao Paulo to Moscow, Paris to Tokyo, and Beijing to London or New York. Like previous Falcons, the 8X will be able to meet the demanding approach and takeoff restrictions for operating into London City Airport. The 1,765 cu. ft. (48 cu. meters) cabin, the most voluminous Falcon yet, is typically divided into three passenger seating sections plus crew rest area and lav, galley and aft lav, but Dassault is offering more than 30 different floor plans, including one with an optional shower. The aircraft will be certified to 51,000 ft. and maintain a 3,900 ft. cabin altitude at FL 410. The cockpit will feature the latest version of the Dassault’s EASy integrated flight deck, including SVS and EVS in the left seat HUD (a copilot HUD is planned), next generation FMS and digital flight control system. Sixteen cabin windows on each side of the fuselage flood the cabin and galley with natural light. Dassault is emphasizing the 8X’s operating performance and economy, noting its three-engine configuration provides better hot/high figures than the competition and allows it to serve hundreds more airports as well. Moreover, it claims the new trijet will be up to 35% more fuel efficient and, thanks is large measure to its MSG-3 design, will be easier and less expensive to maintain — with increased inspection periods — and should match the

enetti ushers in a new era. At the upcoming Cannes boat show, the Tuscan boatyard will unveil a third generation of fast yachts, rounding out the already extensive range of products which currently includes Class Range, semi-custom displacement vessels with 6 models from 93' to 145', and Custom, mega-yachts starting at 45 metres. The new Fast Displacement line of composite yachts built by Benetti in the Viareggio boatyard already includes two models: the F-140’, introduced last year, and the brand new F-125’, which is making its debut at Cannes 2013. With this new line, the boatyard intends to tap into a strong and as yet relatively unexplored market in semi-custom super yachts with a sporty spirit. These are vessels characterised by their versatility, speed (when called for), but which are also extremely comfortable in displacement mode and highly efficient at any speed. Their dynamism perfectly unites with the sheer pleasure of on board living, and the construction quality and maximum customization which Benetti is known for. Benetti CEO Vincenzo Poerio says, “Many of our clients have requested faster, more versatile, and efficient boats, while maintaining the same level of comfort and customization found in our existing yachts. The new Fast Displacement line is designed precisely in response to these requests, and it rounds out our current offering in the Class Range. We haven't just created a new series; we have invested time and resources - combining the Benetti's 140-years of experience in super yachts with the technological know how of Azimut Benetti Group - to create a new way of heading out to sea." 56 Valley Social Magazine

entley’s limited edition GT3-R, which the company’s CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer described as the “road-leading derivative of the GT3 race-car,” made its North American debut this Fall.
“Bentley has a very strong racing heritage,” Dürheimer explained, which makes this 2.4 ton vehicle a highly relevant addition to the brand’s collection. With two seats and the ability to go from 0 to 60 in 3.6 seconds, this isn’t your average over-sized touring Bentley. Although today most people don’t necessarily link the Bentley brand with racing, history reflects Dürheimer’s explanation. Bentley Motors won the 24 Hours of Le Mans five times between 1924 and 1930. The company is now trying to win back that prestige in the racing world, and the release of the $337,000 GT3-R marks a giant step toward that goal. This new model is something between a race car and a touring vehicle, with a 4.0-liter twin turbocharged V8 engine, 572 brake horsepower, and 518 pound-feet of torque. The car’s front wheels feature 16.5-inch carbon ceramic brakes–the biggest on any production car in the world, capable of absorbing 10 megajoules of energy in one stop. Right down to its green-striped exterior and black-finished 21-inch wheels, the vehicle is race-inspired. Its body is made from steel and aluminum, with a carbon fiber front splitter and rear wing. The bonnet also has cooling vents, typical of a race car. Bentley is manufacturing just 300 of the cars, which operate on 13 miles per gallon of gasoline. Their gas mileage might be less than impressive and design and color customization is not even an option, but Bentley notes that the GT3-R is more of a collector’s item than a practical touring vehicle.

MUSICICON BY CAMILLE DAGORN
JANET JACKSON A Legend Continues…
In 1949, Pearl Bailey discovered Bennett’s instrumental music style, one reminiscent of his own music idols: Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong. Bob Hope, who recommended that he take the name “Tony Bennett,” subsequently hired him. A deal with Columbia Records followed, and Bennett released ‘Because of You,’ which sold over a million copies and reached #1 in pop charts. Other hits included ‘Blue Velvet,’ ‘Rags to Riches,’ and ‘Stranger in Paradise.’ Tony added two more albums to his repertoire, which included ‘Chicago’ and ‘Jeepers Creepers’ as popular songs. Not long after, Tony released what would become his signature song, ‘I Left My Heart in San Francisco.’ The “B-side single” won Tony Bennett his first Grammy Award. After 20 years, Bennett parted ways with Columbia Records. This led to a 10-year hiatus, coinciding with a downfall of drug use and a struggle to return to a rock and roll-dominated era. Not one to be defined by struggle, Bennett returned to the stage with the 1986 album appropriately titled, The Art of Excellence. Bennett revived his career by bringing back his beloved style and re-signed with Columbia Records.
Upon his 80th birthday he released Tony Bennett: Duets – An American Classic, which housed star-powered collaborations with musicians such as Barbara Streisand, Elton John, Elvis Costello, Bono and Sting. A follow-up album released in 2011 in which Bennett paired with Lady Gaga in “The Lady is a Tramp,” an album highlight. He also performed with the late Amy Winehouse in “Body and Soul,” Winehouse’s final recording. The duo won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group in 2012. Bennett’s duet with Queen Latifah also earned a Grammy Award.
O
ne cannot mention “musical legends” without speaking of Tony Bennett. With a musical style that has transcended from the 1950s until now, Tony Bennett has stood the test of time. The rise, fall and resurgence of his career make him a recognized icon among historic jazz legends. Anthony Dominick Benedetto was the youngest of three children. Affected by the Great Depression and an ailing father, Bennett’s family grew up in poverty. He eventually lost his father at just 9 years old. Despite hardships, Bennett maintained his passion for performing. He attended the New York High School of Industrial Arts but dropped out at 16 to support his family and worked as a singing waiter throughout his teens. He served in the Second World War and found himself on the front lines in 1945. Unable to part with his musical passion, he sang with the Army military band with the stage name "Joe Bari” until his discharge in 1946. 60 Valley Social Magazine

Sir Richard Branson commented: “Necker Island has been my home for more than 30 years and for me it is the most beautiful place in the world. Emeril Lagasse Lehigh Valley’s own QVC host Shares The Secrets To Her Success on Camera, as a Wife & Mother
F
or Stacey Stauffer, a typical day involves waking up when everyone else is going to sleep, commuting an hour to work, shooting hours of television segments for QVC, and fulfilling mommy duties at home. Life is anything but ordinary. With roots firmly planted in the Lehigh Valley, the successful television host juggles career and family with ease, proving that working moms really do have super powers. You may recognize Stacey Stauffer from over 15 years she has spent anchoring and reporting news for channels such as Fox 29 and NBC 10. After years of success as a news anchor and reporter, Stauffer found that while she wanted to stay in broadcasting, the hectic hours and unconventional lifestyle weren’t quite conducive to raising a family. But as life often has a way of surprising us, a unique opportunity to be a program host for QVC presented itself. Despite being hesitant to transition away from a successful career in broadcast news, Stauffer’s supportive friends and family assured her that her relatable personality would certainly fit the bill. The Allentown native decided to just “be herself” – an attitude that set Stauffer apart from thousands of other applicants.
70 Valley Social Magazine
The shift from news to multimedia retail was no easy feat, and Stauffer admits there were some unexpected challenges, such as being on air for three hours nonstop. “After 20 years of being in broadcasting, there’s no weather person to throw to, no commercial breaks and no desk to hide behind.” Yet Stauffer met the challenge head on, and even discovered aspects of her new role that she never thought she would love so much. “You just have to go for it!” she confidently proclaims. “I’m such a better consumer because of it and that’s what I hope I help bring to the table for the person shopping with QVC.” If there’s one quality she recognizes as the most important for maintaining such a busy lifestyle, it’s an easygoing attitude, which she credits for getting her through the 12 am wake-up calls. “I don’t sweat the small stuff. I take one day at a time. I’m definitely a type B personality!” Stauffer has not only gained a loyal following of QVC audience members, but has had the opportunity to work alongside a team she loves.

“It’s been a scary, fabulous, crazy ride. It’s definitely invigorating. The company couldn’t be more fabulous in helping me hone my craft. It’s beyond anything that I’ve experienced in news…I feel like family already yet I still have a lot to learn.” Is there a lesson a busy mom forging ahead in her career can learn from Stauffer? “It’s okay for things not to be perfect. Dinner may not always be a homemade meal. The laundry may pile up. The dishes may be in the sink. “ “As long as at the end of the day you can hug your family, be with your kids and smile, and let them see you smile, I think you knock it out of the park and have a successful day.”
Some may think that one of Stauffer’s tougher challenges is her commute to work each day from Allentown to West Chester, but this is nothing the working mom and television maven can’t handle. Working overnight hours, starting the day when everyone else is sleeping and having her kids tuck her into bed can be challenging To this, Stauffer responds, “When you love what you do, it’s not that difficult. It’s a privilege to have the jobs I’ve had in my life.” Of course, the Allentown native has been tempted to move to Philadelphia to cut down on commuting time, but the sense of community and at-home feel that the Lehigh Valley offers means so much more to her and her family. “In the end I never did it because I love the Lehigh Valley.” Stauffer recalls her favorite childhood activities growing up, from going shopping to vacationing at the Jersey shore to getting strawberry pie at Hess’s, “Growing up here was like the all-American lifestyle.” Now, Stauffer enjoys seeing the development across the Lehigh Valley, from entertainment and restaurants to the park systems that her family enjoys. “I remember that Allentown was the main focal point of the Lehigh Valley and now it’s all three cities,” Stauffer says. “There’s so much diversity, there’s so much to do whether you want to go mountain biking…or to the Allentown art museum.” Stauffer studied in Pittsburgh and worked in various areas throughout Pennsylvania, telling herself she wanted to break away from all that she knew. Yet it is the quaint but cultured lifestyle which has brought her back to the Lehigh Valley along with Stauffer’s self-awareness of knowing what it’s like to be truly home. “After all these years, the specific things that I loved about growing up here are the reasons for what keeps me here today.” “It’s great to be home.”

In the midst of a successful career in finance at Barclays Wealth, would you change anything?
bikes to New Hope as well. We are lucky to have such nice scenic areas such as the Delaware/Lehigh Rivers and the roads like 611 and 32 to enjoy.
I learned a lot from my successes, but even more from my mistakes. So to change anything? It’s hard to say because going through that experience provided some key learnings that helped guide me through my career. I think looking back I found ways to be more efficient with my time. In the past I found that I spent a lot of time trying to influence things that are just out of your control. I found ways to identify what I can control and spend more of my focus in that space during my days. I just wish I would have been able to develop that skill earlier in my life.
What is your favorite spot in the Lehigh Valley? NYC?
What does no one know about you? That is an interesting question because I try to be an open book and tend to share as much as possible with my clients and business relationships that I develop. I think one of the things that most people don’t know about me is that I lived and was raised by my Grandfather. He was a Bethlehem Steel guy, worked as a steel roller for 46 years. I observed his work ethic at a young age. He prided himself on getting up early, between 4:00 am and 4:30 and getting the most out of each day. He said if you start doing things when other people are sleeping, not matter how small of a task, it adds up over time. He also would not let me sleep past 5am even on weekends. Growing up I hated it, but I would use the time to study for a test before school or get a in a quick workout. To this day I get up at 4am and start my drive to New York City by 5am. On weekends I sleep in to about 4:30am and get a lot of reading and left over business emails done before my wife and kids get up. My Grandfather had a very strong work ethic that you just don’t see anymore. I try to emulate that work ethic and instill those values in my kids in their school and athletics. He was a special person and really influenced my life. What is your perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of NYC? I have a couple of escapes I use. Living in the Lehigh Valley is the biggest one of all. Most of my Wall Street peers live in the City, Westchester County NY, Connecticut or northern New Jersey. So that in itself is an escape. The Lehigh Valley is a nice cross section of what the World is really like. Living in the Lehigh Valley helps me with my job I because I get a real sense of the issues people really care about and witness it first hand. Sometimes I just need to recharge my batteries. My wife and I found a really great place in Islamorada that we go to every year. Its such a wonderful place and we both decompress while we are there. It’s a quick trip since its one of the Florida Keys and the place we stay at is a house right on the beach. Time seems to stand still. We also take a family trip with our three boys each year. We used to live in Charleston, SC for 4 years so we have a lot of friends that became family to us. We go to Charleston at least once a Summer usually over the Fourth of July. Again, a great place that isn’t far from the Lehigh Valley. I also have a Ducati Multistrada that I use for “quick escapes”. After a tough week in the markets and the commute, I take the Ducati out for a run down along the Delaware River toward New Hope to grab lunch and head back up to the Lehigh Valley. Many times I have run into some of my Wall Street friends taking their
82 Valley Social Magazine
My favorite spot in the Lehigh Valley depends on what I’m doing and my mood. I enjoy a cigar every so often, so frequent Leaf Cigar Bar to grab a bite, a drink and of course a good cigar. If its dinner or Sunday brunch with the family, then I like to go to Corked. That place reminds me of some of the places in NYC. They do a very nice job there and there is a great vibe there. My wife and I also like going to lunch at Sette Luna, 1818 Tavern, and Melt. In New York City the theme is pretty similar. There is a great private club called the Grand Havana Room for a great cigar, a drink and great food with business colleagues. It’s one of those places you go and often see some of the “who’s who” of Wall Street and some celebrities but no one bothers them. Everyone is there for the same same thing, to decompress and enjoy a cigar. For lunch my go to place is Casa Lever a few blocks form my office. Great food and a great place to meet with clients. Dinner seems to be a rotation between the steak houses (Del Frisco’s and Bobby Vans) and some Italian restaurants in midtown (Grifones or Padre Figlio) with a Greek fish house (Ammos) in the mix too. What is the next big thing? The next big thing? Wow that is tough to answer...technology is moving so quickly and so are advancements in the medical field. But I think the next big thing will be getting back to the basics. What I mean by that is that you see all of the mobile devices and social media sites taking the place of physical interactions. I actually carry 2 devices, a Blackberry and an iPhone 6 plus. I always ask myself what happens of I lose everything? Emails, pictures , text conversations. That would be devastating. You try and back thinks up but you always seem to lose information. I think there will be a movement to actually have your pictures printed out in an album that can be handed down for generations. How many of us have old pictures or scrap books from out grandparents of their past. If you don’t back up your systems properly or there is some cyber attack all of that information is lost for our generation. I think we lost the sense of the physical. We don’t have conversations anymore. We text. I think you will see a movement to “check your devices” and “get off grid” to actually communicate with your peers, have “in person” interactions and print pictures. I think you will see a blend of using the technology like your Facebook page to create a hardcopy of your personal history to had down to your grandchildren. If we don’t do this I think you will see a generation’s history lost because technology moved so fast and that we lost a physical record of our past. We won’t know how important the need is to have a physical record of our past until some event prevents us from accessing the electronic version. And I think you will see vacation resorts actually advertise that you can “get off grid” and get completely unplugged from work and the rest of the World instead of “we have WiFi”. I think you will see people develop the desire to want to be unplugged from their work and the World. That’s what I think the next big thing is. va l l e y s o c i a l m a g.c o m

HELP!! MY DOG IS PARALYZED ON THE BACK LEGS.
McCarty Hometown? Age? I checked in at the shelter mid-2014. Notables? I love cheeseburgers! Hair length - best feature? I have an excellent soft coat, love to be petted. Walk in the park? I love to go for walks and play fetch with sticks. What I'm looking for? I lived with some, friends now I just need a nice warm place to call home! Call The Center for Animal Health & Welfare 610.252.7722
You return home from a long day to find your pet family member greeting you at the door dragging his or her back legs and unable to stand. You are in a panic and call your family veterinarian. Your pet is rushed to the hospital for evaluation. On physical examination, your veterinarian diagnoses a slipped disk along the spine and recommends referral to a specialist. This scenario is quite common among pet owners. A slipped disk otherwise known as intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is a degenerative condition of the spine and disks that affects all dogs but especially the chondrodystrophic breeds of dogs. Specifically the short crooked legged dogs such as the dachsund, beagle, pekingese, corgi, basset hound, shih tzu, among others. Along with the inability to walk most animals are painful secondary to the swelling that occurs associated with the condition. Clients should be careful while caring for patients with IVDD prior to evaluation; they may bite out of fear and pain. They should be placed in a pet taxi or crate or placed in a blanket or comforter for travel. Do not give any drugs such as aspirin. Patients with IVDD that are paralyzed are considered an emergency. These patients should be evaluated by a specialist for further diagnostics and options. Treatment can consist of medical and/or surgical options depending on the severity of the condition. The goal of surgery is to eliminate the pressure on the spinal cord and resolve inflammation rendering the patient pain-free with a return to mobility. Your pet should be evaluated as soon as possible. Please do not delay evaluation by a veterinarian or specialist. Prognosis decreases significantly if the paralysis is associated with loss of the toe pinch sensation (deep pain). If the pet cannot consciously recognize that his or her toes are being pinched, this reduces chances for walking again with surgery. This is the one time I want an animal to make an attempt to bite me. Depending on the severity and financial restraints, other options may be discussed. One good option is a visit to one of the physical therapy centers in your area. Here the therapist can perform hydro therapy along with several other exercises to promote recovery. Heat, massage, ultrasound, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (tens) are other treatments the physical therapist may perform. In addition, you are shown exercises to perform at home for continued treatment and care. Another option is cold laser therapy. This therapy consists of treatment with a laser light that produces energy that will penetrate the skin and muscles and reach the spine to reduce inflammation. Many veterinary practices have a Class 4 laser unit on hand along with all physical therapy centers. One recent study looked at electro-acupuncture in a group of dogs with hindlimb paralysis. Seventy-eight percent of the dogs that received electro-acupuncture walked again over a period of 8-12 weeks. Seek out one of the veterinary acupuncturist near you. Your veterinarian or any specialist can refer you to one in your area. This article focused on the paralyzed animal. There are a number of other presentations and symptoms for animals with IVDD that are non-emergent. In summary, IVDD should be considered an emergency. Your pet needs prompt medical and/or surgical care. A wait and see approach to see how he or she does without a veterinary exam is inappropriate! Please see our website for more information at vcvrc.com or feel free to contact one of the doctors for more information or a consult.
