ROOM PREFERENCE Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, achieves something rare—it feels pristine yet ancient. The Mandapa, or a shrine is a sacred place for devotoees to rest their body, mind and soul. Built inside the lush, peaceful valley of the mighty Ayung River, the reserve provides a luxurious holistic experience and the guests will feel an unmatched sense of rejuvenation. The room has a dark character, unlike the many hotel rooms that one finds in Bali. Yet, it feels fresh due to the presence of big windows , the greenery coming in and the pops of colour added by traditional balinese fabrics, pantings as well as artifacts. Waking up to the beautiful view of the river or the rice paddy fields, relaxing in outdoor pools as well as showers- the reserve helps one to connect and sync with nature. It feels like a perfect getaway to leave the hustle-bustle behind and relax in the lap of nature.

CONNECTING TO CONTEXT Reference Image

Situated amongst the rice paddy fields, the reserve tries to provide an authentic Balinese experience to the guests. Sandwiched between 35 suites nestled into the hillside and 25 pool villas down in the valley are the rice terraces and the temple, just like a balinese village. Mandapa is fully connected to the life and culture of the island. The architecture does ample of justice to the beautiful nature, with traditional balinese stonework, natural wood, carvings and minimalistic Balinese interior. The place boasts of luxury while keeping the traditional aspects of Balinese culture in mind.

ARCHITECT’S STYLE At DesignWilkes, the prinicpal architect, Jeffrey Wilkes, practices the concept of blending cosmopolitan influences with tradition. Every element of design is naturally inspired and sustainably sourced to create the final experience. With Ritz Carlton, the architect was able to achieve the same by taking inspiration from the site context and implementing it during the designing process. Render Image

Description

DESIGNER’S INTENT Mandapa has been designed to feel like a Balinese village and the property really does have a very strong sense of place. Every single design decision was based on four mantras Striking, Intimate, Magical and Enlightening. The villas are tucked away in private gardens and the suites are stacked in imposing multi-storey buildings that overlook the rest of the resort. The designer wanted Mandapa to look aged, to have a feel that it has been there forever and at the same time, also disappear so that the nature is the main show. The verdant landscaping conceals most of the buildings and adds to the privacy of the property. Enhanced with the traditional yet contemporary Balinese interiors, all the elements were naturally inspired and sustainably sourced.

Jeffrey Wilkes is behind the decor and even the lowest-category rooms are magnificent, with dark, dark woods and rich textiles. Designwilkes has shown painstaking attention to every texture and fitting. Ceiling basketry, gold-speckled glass, highest- uality ikats, and specially commissioned Javanese chairs give the uarters a regal uality. It took local artists two years just to hand-paint the gallery-worthy ceiling-to-floor murals in every bedroom. Bathrooms have freestanding tubs-for-two with raised leather headrests either end. This isn’t a place that invites relaxation, it insists upon it.

Zoning and Flow

Mango Bay resort is a well-known place on Phu Quoc Island. The resort attracts the tourists by its eco-friendly concept, with only 44 rooms/bungalows on a piece of land that spreads over 10 hectares. The Spa, was designed with the principles to inherit the simple, rustic but cozy spirit of the whole resort.

Private Terrace

After several site analysis, the location of the spa was decided to be sat on a light slope toward the sea, hidden behind the bungalows and surrounded by jungle. A small earth path linked the new Spa with the old one, who was becoming the space for yoga and Taichi practicing. The Spa is composed of 4 buildings in rectangular shapes, linked by covered walkways, surrounding a landscape pond. The two mains building contain the Reception Area – Changing Space- Shower- Treatment – Relaxing area after treatment, while the two sub-buildings consist only of treatment rooms. Each treatment room had its private terrace at the back, connected to a little garden.

LIGHT During the day, the space is flushed with natural light so there is not much need of artificial lighting to light up the space.

The extended thatch roofs prevent the harsh sunlight from coming in and the space gets lit by the soft reflected sunlight. The wooden louver doors/ windows, pesent in all the rooms, create an airy and comfortable internal space, and by that, there is no need for air conditioner. The wooden louver doors/windows with pivoting system help controlling the quantity of natural light access the inner space, depend on the moment and the mood of the guests.

During the night, the space gets lit up mostly by spot lights. This helps to accentuate/ highting particular features of the space such as trees , doors and seating areas. Spot lights have been used to accentuate/ emphasize on spcific areas such as seating and recpetion spaces. They have used warm light which feels natural to us in the evenings and promotes relaxation. it gives an evening hearthside fire.

-No general lighting in the room. It is appropriate as light should never be placed on top of the treatment bed to prevent glare. This helps in creating a relaxing and healing environment.

- Highlights the sink and storage area. - Minimal use of light in space. Helps to create a cozy and intimate feeling.

- Wood, having a matte finish absorbs light, thus helping to prevent glare. - The use of warm light brings out the colours of the wood and the rammed earth helping to achieve the rustic atmosphere and is in tune with the new style of the hotel. Roll No: UI3516

Located in NewActon, a diverse new precinct in Canberra, Nishi Commercial is a major new development housing government departments, private offices, a cinema and cafes. The lobby, designed by March Studio, projects a unique identity through thousands of lengths of repurposed timber, blurring boundaries while directing views and movement. A grand stair - the stage for performances as much as idle procrastination - leads up to the HotelHotel lobby and bar. In the stair the timber is heavy, grounded, a stacked agglomeration. Freed to scatter up the walls and across the ceiling, the suspended timber filters exterior light and views into and from internal spaces. The material palette has been kept very minimal and in shades of creams and browns. This gives the decorators a clear canvas to work on for their designs. There is not much colour in the space, hence gold has been used to accentuate features like the pilars and the doors. This helps to give a royal look to the place. The flooring has been covered by a carpet which helps to absorb light and sound. The walls are painted and don’t have sound proofing.

CONCEPT ARTWORK

Site : Gajoldoba, West Bengal Project Type: Hospitality- Eco Resort Reference Architecture : Colonial Tea Bungalows of Darjeeling Program: HEALTH and WELLNESS RETREAT In today’s rapidly evolving, fast-paced culture, it can be near impossible to find a minute to yourself. Often there’s hardly a free moment to catch your breath, let alone clear your mind. That’s why for many, just the thought of booking a getaway to a warm, tropical destination and unplugging from emails, obligations and commitments is enough to cleanse your thoughts. Spending time away from your daily routine can invigorate your senses and allow you to see things more clearly. With a wellness retreat, you gain the valuable opportunity to do just that – to restore, recharge and refocus your mind. The power of a health retreat is that it provides you with the peace, serenity, resources and environment to find a healthier state of mind and engage in healthy and positive practices. In the context of Gajoldoba it also acts as a means to attract people, not just the ones living nearby but all from across the country and various parts of the world. It’s calm and peaceful quality acts as a perfect setting for a health and wellness retreat.

TRISROTA

“possessed of three streams”; connection of mind, body and soul The teesta river is placed in close proximity of the eco resort site. Taking clues for the context, I took the river and it’s flow as a concept. THE RIVER AND IT’S JOURNEY The story of Teesta begins 23,386 ft above the sea-level at the Pahunri glacier nestled between the Tibet and India border. It meanders and rapids from the Sikkim Himalayas, travelling far and through turbulences and travels to the plains of Gajaldoba in West Bengal and rests near the site of the eco resort. The same way, a human leads a fast paced, ever evolving life; never static in the cities. Coming to Tristrota, the health and wellness retreat, she finally comes at peace. TRISROTA The three channels, namely, the Karatoya to the east, the Punarbhaba in the west and the Atrai in the centre make up the teesta river. The three channels possibly gave the name to the river as Trisrota “possessed of three streams” which has been shortened to Teesta. Similarly, the mind, body, and soul are the components that collectively define human existence. Three chanaels coming together to make the human complete. CONCEPT The river and it’s flow The river has a characteristic of flowing through- in a state of flux. It’s never static. Linking this to the program of health and wellness center, the way the river keeps on flowing, the energy through our body flows the same way. The river, even though is turbulent at the surface, deep down it’s calm. peaceful. When one is inside the water, they can hear themselves, feel their breath and are connected with their mind body and soul. The space- A person should be able to experience the flow. He should feel the space is never static, it’s dynamic and keeps on changing. The space should make one feel at peace, help them align themselves and helpthem to connect with themselves and the serene nature. A person, though might not be able to see the river but should be able to feel it and take it back with themself. WATER and HUMAN- Why do we feel peaceful around water? - Our bodies are 60% water and the earth is made up of 71% water. We humans have a connection with water because it is all around us. - Water helps us to feel peaceful. As a baby in a mother’s womb we are in water. That is why we feel peaceful around and inside water.

SPATIAL TRANSLATION UNDERSTANDING THE RIVER AND IT’S FLOW Direction River meandering course Rivers flow downhill with their power derived from gravity. The direction can involve all directions of the compass and can be a complex meandering path. Rivers flowing downhill, from river source to river mouth, do not necessarily take the shortest path. For alluvial streams, straight and braided rivers have very low sinuosity and flow directly down hill, while meandering rivers flow from side to side across a valley. Bedrock rivers typically flow in either a fractal pattern, or a pattern that is determined by weaknesses in the bedrock, such as faults, fractures or more erodible layers.

Turbulent flow - water flows as discrete eddies and vortices. Rushed flow. Active zones. Rapid.

Meandering flow - Water flow in the stream is altered by blockages (topography). Obstructed Movement. Hindered flow.

Helical flow - Spiral flow in a stream. Helical flow has an important role in sediment transport and deposition, and in the creation of point bars. Focal attraction points. Pause points.

Rate Streamflow The amount of water that flows through in a particular amount of time. Volumetric flow rate can be thought of as the mean velocity of the flow through a given cross-section, times that cross-sectional area. Mean velocity can be approximated through the use of the Law of the Wall. That is, velocity increases with the depth (or hydraulic radius) and slope of the river channel, while the cross-sectional area scales with the Roll No: UI3516

Name: Natasha Taunk

Laminar flow - Water flow in the stream is not altered in its direction. Parallel Movement. Unhindered flow. Free flowing.

Flows and Site The user should be able to experience the flow. The space should feel dynamic and constantly evolving. The space should make one feel at peace, make them feel overwhelming emotions, get them wandering, help them align themselves and connect with themselves and the serene nature. The addition of courtyards helps to break the flow as people go around it. They act as eye magnets that attract the attention and break the visual flow . They act as appertures that maximise the views, help to connect the space to the outside on the vertical axis and encourage the air flow. The courtyards also act as informal spaces for public interaction.

The concept of flow’ has been tried to be achieved by the transitional flow between volumes. The central volume connects the two volumes placed at different angles. The terrace on top of the middle volume also helps to connect the two volumes on either side visually. The first two volumes are the layers one encounters before entering the most intimate spaces. They build the threshold, when the person is meandering through the space before reaching the final destination

CONTEXTUAL INFLUENCE The context of Gajoldoba, WB has been tried to get in through the use of terracotta and clay that reflect an elegant beauty and rich culture. Also, having taken inspiration and the concept of the project from the river, clay felt like an apt material choice for a lot of elements and finishes.Since it is also used for medicinal purposes and in various aesthetic treatments, it supports the program of Health and Wellness Retreat.
