N0R : Light Religious Competition & Space in Singapore 2016/17 Design Studio Prof. Tomohisa Miyauchi Religious Competition and Space is a critical issue to Singapore because it is a multi-racial, religious country run by a secular state; We have many and various spaces of worship; Singapore is also land scarce and highly populated; And because of these land scarcity and high population, there is a high building density where everyone is in close proximity to one another. Based on these characteristics, Singapore is an environment that is highly susceptible to conflict and violence if this issue of Religious Competition is not treated and managed carefully. Hence more than just adhoc and passive activities, there needs to be a very tangible, constant and active endeavour towards a positive state of Religious competition. Considering the many dynamic changes that Singapore is experiencing, how can we design an environment that bring about Religious Tolerance & Understanding for both Secular & Religious communities? The intervention should serve to be an architectural strategic prototype in how to design spaces between existing places of Worship a. Design shared ancillary spaces between Religious Groups b. Design for Local secular community needs c. Design with unique Site Elements
model photo
The proposed building is a combination of a research centre to be run by the inter-religious organisation, shared non-sacred ancillary spaces for the exisiting temple and mosque and also a park for respite for office workers within the Central Business District (CBD). This space should cultivate a harmonious everyday coexistence between the different communities, through its programmes, structures, systems and spaces. While the park serves as a passive, everyday ritualistic passage for office workers, the ncillary spaces serve as an active space for intermittent events for the mosque and temple, and the research centre as a unique program relevant to the site’s history and Singapore’s current context. Sectional Model 1 : 200
Proposal It should serve to be an architectural strategic prototype in how we design spaces between Existing places of Worship. After researching and looking into the spaces of various multifaith spaces of worship, and synthesising how spaces of worship work in general. I have come up with 3 main strategies. 1. Firstly, to design shared non-sacred ancillary spaces between Religious Groups 2. Secondly, to design for Local secular community needs 3. Thirdly to design with unique Site Elements in mind
Issue Study Religious History in Singapore: a Timeline
Architectural Study Spaces, Structure, Materiality in Religious Spaces
Site Study Palmer Road, Singapore
Currently, Palmer Road sits at the edge of the Central Business District (CBD). In the past, there was a Mount Palmer, seated next to the coast. The mosque & temple were the first buildings to occupy the site, serving as a space for prayers for pilgrims arriving or leaving the land. Other buildings that occupied the site, were the Bestway Building, Inter Religious Organisation & Parsi Lodge & Burial Grounds. In the near future, it is expected that Palmer House & the back block of Bestway Building will be cleared to make way for the new Shenton Way Bus Interchange & Prince Edward MRT Station.

We observed how Tetris blocks tessellate to fill up the screen. We designed the module based on a similar tessellation pattern. Modules interconnect to complete previously uncompleted Tetris blocks. This interconnectivity emphasizes the concept of continuity of our modular curtain wall.
Our design is inspired by the air-conditioner ceiling vent. It allows air to flow through freely. Its layering of the fins creates an interesting pattern. Its form appears lightweight, simple yet elegant.
A curtain wall consists modular pieces. With this in mind we wanted our 1x1 module to be repeatable yet flexible. Subsequent modules can be attached in any orientation, each time forming a seamless connection with the previous module.
We introduced slots to create ventilation. Slots are obscured when the wall is viewed from the front. This reduces solar glare as well as provides privacy. The Final product is one which is repeatable yet versatile. Obscures yet is porous. Interesting yet Functional.

SINGAPORE FLYER REDEVELOPMENT
N E W S K Y LIN E O F SING A PO R E FLY ER
A summer internship at Shigeru Ban Atelier, gave me the opportunity to work on a client’s proposal to revive the Singapore Flyer. Currently facing a shortage of visitors, due to its inaccessibility, the proposal is to construct a roof extension underneath the flyer. This roof will extend towards the helix bridge and Temasek Boulevard. Structurally, it is to be suspended by the wheel itself, by cables that light up in the night sky.
