PREFACE Do you wonder what makes people’s life better? If you say it’s fame and money, you are not alone. From the longest research for 75 years, the Harvard Study of Adult Development described ‘Good Relationships’ keep us happier and also healthier. A good relationship means being closer to your family, friends, or community with quality and being socially connected to others. However, what is the process to reach goal of positive social interaction with the people we are surrounded by (Waldinger 2015). There are many ways to build a better relationship such as ‘be a Giver or Help others’. When you start to give something to others without looking for gain, you will always get something in return but not always something tangible. Nevertheless, changing human behaviour could be the most ambitious task for a designer to solve but it is possible to do. According to this point, my thesis project anticipates to create a design which is related to human daily life. Even though people today are too rushed, they still need to consume food for a living and engage in this activity more than 2-3 times each day. Therefore, it would be pleasant to combine the positive interaction with ‘Eating’ activity. Regarding contents, the process of researching will first be presented, followed by analysis and innovation in the thesis project. The process includes the experimental approach of testing prototypes with different types of consumers, how it works and the processes of development until I have found the right group of people to focus on. Co-workers came to be the target because people spend more than 8 hours at their office together with colleagues that means it could have a huge effect on their happiness in each day. Once employees engage with my dining project experience, they are not only fed physically, but their souls are considered. I hope everyone could enjoy my meal and acquire my hidden message of reaching the happiness goal together at the present moment.

4D system A structure of research was started from collecting keywords whenever it came to my speculation, then it was analysed and evaluated. ‘Happiness’ is the first thing I would like to discover before extending into daily life, customer behaviours and relationship that I will examine in this book.

H R Cate ri ng

“Play with Food to send a positive message and improve a happiness” was the first define for the thesis. Later, the idea was developed from research, observation and interview to be a precise idea to deliver.

Overall Thesis Structure Moving into a deliver section, I did experiments which are inspired and expanded the primary idea. I started the early step with some tangible tools then extended into eating behaviours in human. After each test, I evaluated the results and developed it again to get the better result.

HUMAN BEING The first day I started my student life in Germany, I had been asking for many times about, who I want to be in the future. Certainly, this question was related to design career’s life, then I questioned myself... Do I want to be the best graphic Designer? Do I want to be a famous designer? Or do I want to change this world with design? I told myself there are nothing I am searching for. Suddenly, something from my experience at psychiatric hospital that I used to be an art therapy volunteer came to my mind. I would love to apply my skills to create a happiness to others. Even though I had no idea what is it going to happen in the next stage. When it was time to propose an idea of the final project, this word, Happiness was recalled to my thought again. Finally, I have been beginning to research more possibility of this positive emotional and design.

Happiness

Whatever you are, wherever you will be or what you’ve been through in your past that makes you happy or unhappy, it’s all about your thought. Everything start from the inside of yourself first. Therefore, it turns out to be your action that you interact with everything surrounded by.

The Longest Study on Happiness. In November last year, Robert Waldinger (2015), a Harvard psychiatrist, Zen priest, psychoanalyst and a director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development, which is possibly the longest study of adult life ever done. He had a lecture at TEDxBeaconSt. about ‘What makes a good life’. He examined some of the secrets to happiness which is followed two types of white men for 75 years, since 1938. His team investigated the men about their lives such as their marriages, careers or social activities every two years and also recorded their physical health every five years. Later, the researchers raised up with one main finding : Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. In his previous TED Talk, Waldinger identify three happiness’s key lessons : 1. Close relationships The men in both groups of the Harvard study who had a good relation with their family, friends, or community tended to be happier and healthier than their less social counterparts. Moreover, it increased their live’s time to be longer. In contrast, participants who live alone reported that they feel less happy and lower quality of physical and mental health (Lewis 2015). ‘Evidence indicates that loneliness heightens sensitivity to social threats and motivates the renewal of social connections, but it can also impair executive functioning, sleep, and mental and physical well-being. Together, these effects contribute to higher rates of morbidity and mortality in lonely older adults’ (Cacioppo and Cacioppo 2014). 2. Quality (not quantity) It’s not because of having someone or being in a relationship help people increase their happiness, but only positive interaction between their couples will improve that feeling. Married couples who had high-conflict marriages were actually high sorrow than people who single. By the way, the quality of relationship was depended on age too (Lewis 2015). 3. Stable, supportive marriages Harvard study have found that retain connected to people in society isn’t just improve a physical health, besides it helps reduce a mental problem. The age 50 couples who had a better result of memory test, they were married without having divorced, separating, or having serious conflict (Lewis 2015). Relationship’ seems to be a major key factor of happiness and good life, isn’t it?

Selfishness “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. --- Mahatma Gandhi

The truth about selfishness. What shapes people selfish? Why do some people ignore others need? Is selfishness cause of self-love? ‘Selfishness is putting your goals, priorities, and needs first before everyone else even those who are really in need’ (M.Farouk Radwan). This day, people are always too rush and busy with their routines. We are focusing on our individual goals and keep doing like that to reach it. Many times, we might willing to help people when they are in troubles, but sometimes we are just too be engrossed in own purpose then it seem to ignore others somehow. On the other hand, there is no any human born to be selfish, we are all preach by society environment. ‘Studies of 18-month-old toddlers show that they will almost always try to help an adult who is visibly struggling with a task, without being asked to do so: if the adult is reaching for something, the toddler will try to hand it to them, or if they see an adult drop something accidentally, they will pick it up’ (Warneken and Tomasello 2006). Thus, I believe that human can be changed or improved their selfishness when they are on the same goal. For instance, a group of workers mostly get along well to work together if their responsibility needs to collaborate with the team. They will help each other to gain the best result of group which is benefit to themselves too. In this point, it could be a way to solve the problem of negative human behaviour.

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. --- Mahatma Gandhi

How Giving improves a society Regarding to, the “International Journal of Happiness and Development” research that investigated how social connection improves human community into positive feeling on the part of giving. A group of researchers from many university aimed to analyse the action of emotional when people give something to someone. They have found that giving money to charity leads to the greatest happiness boost when giving fosters social connection. The result also performed a happiness of healthy social interaction was took a part in voluntary work. “While additional factors other than social connection likely influence the happiness gained from pro-social spending our findings suggest that putting the social in pro-social is one way to transform good deeds into good feelings,” the team concludes (Borchard 2015). Moreover, when people start to pass their giving mind to others and consume a return of happiness, they also create a positive community with people surrounded by. A person who receives or takes something from other always appreciates with this action and the one who act this to him or her. This would seem to be people could have more friends with this action, isn’t it?

Social Relationships

Relationship is the way in which two or more people or things are connected. It’s not only a lover can experience a healthy friendship with you, but family, friends and people surrounded by you also could also build a positive social interaction together. Especially these day, we spend more than 6 hours each day in workplace and it seems to me much more than family time. How do you feel with your work place and co-workers?

Conflict everywhere There are so many causes of conflict in any adult communal place such as universities and companies. One reason for this might be that people are totally different, we were born in different time, we lived in diversity environments, and so many things that caused human are unique. In addition, we all need to live and connect to people in society for some reasons. When we were young, we are easy enjoying with everything. Studies and played with friends who grow up together are the precious moment. Then, they would go back home with smiles and tell their good day to parents. Notwithstanding, when people start work lives, we are not only stressed with position responsibilities but also co-workers’ habits who come from a different backgrounds that is the core reason for negative feeling. After spending more than 8 hours in an office, employees deal with own tasks and problems from colleagues. Employees go back home with exhausted and unhappy feeling from workplace again and again until they learn to solve it. These following are some factors of co-workers’ conflict. ‘First of all, poor Communication: different communication styles can lead to misunderstandings between employees or between employee and manager. Lack of communication drives conflict ‘underground’. Secondly, differing Interests: conflict occurs when individual workers ‘fight’ for their personal goals, ignoring organizational goals and organizational well-being. Last but not least, personality Clashes: all work environments are made up of differing personalities. Unless colleagues understand and accept each other’s approach to work and problem-solving, conflict will occur’ (The university of Oklahoma) We can see that most of the reason come from how people communicate to each others. What if we can improve our communal interaction together?

Meaning of foods This following sources was introduced as a part of article “What Americans can learn from other food cultures to perform how food feeds our soul in many way of eating.

Food as survival We are all need food to stay alive, to feed our physical. Food as status Eating nice composition of food and share a picture via social media is some new way to represent people’s style today. Food as pleasure “Food in France is still primarily about pleasure,” says Mark Singer, technical director of cuisine at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. “Eating fast is not at all part of our culture,” says Marco Bolasco, editorial director of Slow Food and an Italian food expert. Food as community In Arab cultures, community is key to the food culture. The daily iftar that breaks the fast during Ramadan, for example, features platters of traditional fare such as tharid and h’riss that are shared by all who are sitting down to break the fast, eating with their hand from the same dishes. Families and institutions will host private iftars, of course, but mosques, schools, markets and other community organizations will also offer large iftar meals, and all are open to the public and shared. This family style of eating is not dissimilar to the dishes on a Chinese dinner table, where one does not eat a single portioned and plated dish, but is expected to eat from shared, communal platters. Food as humanity Perhaps cuisine, though, isn’t so much about progress as it is about restraint. “One of the great things about cuisine is that it the best way to hold back our

Human Eating Behaviour This following sources was introduced as a part of article “What Americans can learn from other food cultures to perform how food feeds our soul in many way of eating.

Human Eating Behaviour : by today ‘Eating is now just one of several activities being multitasked at once, all of which generally involve computers and smartphones, including surfing the Web, communicating with friends via Facebook and doing homework’ (Varno 2011). Regarding to people rush through daily life today, Madeline Varno, a senior communication major at RIT and principal author of the study of “How new-media technology, including the Internet and smartphones, are changing college students’ eating habits and their relationship to food” demonstrated that it is rapidly went up many problems to human behaviour. Eating is included, It seem to be we are eating too fast and neglect to focusing on our food. These following are some tips for a healthy meal. – Guard mealtime, dedicated time to sit down at a table and savour your food. Fend off the impulse to whittle away your lunch hour running errands or downing breakfast at your computer. – Take five to 10 slow, deep breaths before every meal to flip on the body’s relaxation response, a built-in protection against stress. – Pace yourself. If you normally eat breakfast in five minutes, for example, take 10. “If you are a fast and furious eater, it’s time to change gears” (David 2005).

One of the best relationship in this would could be the bonding of Mother and child.

From the research of breast-feeding from mother to baby demonstrated children who have been breast-fed had a better performance in intelligence tests compared with those who have been bottle-fed. Moreover, when mother do the breast-feeding, it seem to be enhances the bonding process between baby and mother. Baby will feel safe, secure and warm when touching mother’s bare skin.(Dr. Newson 2013) A possible explanation for this is that baby can feel how his/her mother love and care by treating, particularly when feed something as milk or food. If you had a chance to fed some children before, you would realised this reason. It takes a plenty of time and energy to find the way to encourage kid open their mouth. That could be performed how much parent feel with their child. They try to give all the best food to boost physical part, besides that the receivers also consume in mentality section too. Furthermore, the giver as mother or parent could be valued from the feeding. From the previous unit, it mentioned to the research about giving money to charity leads to the greatest happiness boost. In deed, we might say that when mother or someone feed other, it could represent as giving action. Therefore, the feeders could get the same positive emotion as giver.

The Meaning of Elements I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way—things I had no words for. —Georgia O’Keeffe

shapes There are variety of shapes are transferring some message to consumers that you might not aware of. So what is the meaning behind some goods’ shapes, especially the previous cutleries that I mentioned before? Here is some message from shapes which are inspired my thesis project in the following part.

Circles The shape of no beginning or end. They represent the eternal whole and in every culture are an natural form as the sun, the earth, the moon, the universe, and so on. Circles have free movement which could be roll. They are warm, comforting and give a sense of sensuality and love. However, energy and power were performed when they move. Furthermore, people also use them to represent a completeness as the infinite, unity, and harmony (Bradley 2010).

Spirals These shape is appeared in nature as a snail’s shell or the nautilus. It is one of free-movement shape which is associated with growth, life and transformation. Following this, the looped shape also has some connections to cycles of life or time or seasons. One of the past anonymous word said the shape, spiral, represents the unveiling of hidden knowledge or information (Cousins 2016). One of the interesting in this shape is, they are always lead our feeling that they are open to move or to connect to other in the way people want to creates follow our imaginations.

‘Colour has a powerful subconscious effect on every part of our lives, without even saying a word; an understanding of colour meanings in business gives us an invaluable tool to get the best response to our marketing and promotional efforts and ultimately to create a successful business’ (Kemmis 2000). Each colour transfer a various of feeling and meaning to consumers without any word. The meaning of them could be depend on different cultures and people’s backgrounds. RESEARCH SUMMARY A good relationship builds happiness. A giver’s personality and mind create a better relation. Besides, the giver is a human who can’t live without consuming food in some ways. Why don’t we integrate behavioural interdependence during our meal to help people to have a healthy interaction? then they might acquire some little happiness after their physical need was satisfied.

Target : As I am studying in an International course and during the thesis semester, we do have a Mentoring class every week. The idea of Mentoring class is that every week some one cooks their own national food for others and have lunch together while we discuss about our progress. Therefore, I used my turn to try the first experiment with the International Classmates, who came from different countries so they have various cultures and diverse behaviours of eating.

H R Cate ri ng

EX PER I M EN TS : 1 - H e l l o r H e ave n

Purpose : This experiment tries to encourage people to feed others or help friends to carry food by the tools provided in order to get the idea of being a giver.

Project’s Plan : 1. Served mixed Thai spicy mushrooms and sticky grilled rice which were cooked in a round shape and quite heavy in the centre of long table. 2. Provided them long handle spoons and forks, participants selected the ones they preferred. 3. Requested everybody to use the cutleries for fun. 4. Observed how they communicate with others through the equipments. TIP: If people are not using long cutleries to feed friends, try to encourage them by feeding them first.

Expectation : 1. Everyone will use the prototypes to feed others because it is too long to feed themselves. 2. Improving communication, focusing on people more than ownself. 3. Reduce stress while we are talking about serious topic like Thesis.

Results :

69

1. My classmate are happy and enjoy this meal.

1. They fed themselves even thouhg the spoon was too long.

2. They tried to strict to the rules that I asked them used the tools.

2. The prototype are too easy to spilt out from rubber.

3. When someone dropped the food or cannot handle it, another started to help each others. 4. Asian are able to eat from my spoon more than Latin people.

Further Step : 1. Reconstructing cutleries to make it easier to realise the hidden message, such as feed others or share foods. 2. Design a new method to change an eating behaviour that motivates participants to help each others. 3. Create more objects or tools to use while eating in order to deliver the message more clearly.

TWO-GETHER According to the first experiment, it was proved that people are able to be kind and helpful depending on the situation. Therefore, if an eating event could lead people to involve in the same activity, participants will start to give and help others to reach the goal together.

Inspiration - EAT LOVE I found this book accidentally but I could say, this is the first designer who inspired me, food Concepts by Eating-Designer Marije Vogelzang. This book described her interests in the verb ‘eat’. Not only the food but everything that surrounds the act of eating was also concerned. The atmosphere, the people involved, the stories behind the ingredients, the taste and texture, sound, smell and colour of food and the way it is prepared and served. Here is the project which conveyed similar message as I would like to do.

This is one of her projects that I analysed and developed from her operation. Here is the information, “In 2005 I was asked by Droog Design in the Netherlands to do a Christmas dinner. My initial thought was that a Christmas dinner is full of clichés. How can you design something that’s already fully designed? But in thinking of Christmas as a time when people eat together, I decided to create a simple “intervention” (Marije 2005) She used a tablecloth to connect people together by putting their heads inside. Then she also divided one dish into two parts, for example, one person was served a slice of melon on a plate that was cut in two; the person opposite her was given ham on a similar plate so they needed to share with each other to get one menu. None of the participants knew each other before, but after this meal it improved their relationship by having some activities together.

Inspiration - Kumamon Start Happiness from yourself first When I asked myself, what shapes people’s behaviour, I found one interesting point of view that they always learn and experience from family, friends and society. Therefore, if one person starts to be good, it might be possible to lead another person to imitate that.

H R Cate ri ng

EX PER I M EN TS : 2 - Two - gethe r

I would like to introduce one of the most famous mascots in Asia who proved this presumption. Kumamon is the lumpy black bear mascot promoting rural Kumamoto city in southern Japan. Now, he has its image plastered across everything from cookies and bags of rice to bed covers in a luxury hotel to an airplane for Solaseed Air. Behind his commercial success is an unusual marketing strategy. Kumamoto doesn’t charge companies for usage of Kumamon’s image. If a company wants to use Kumamon, it simply fills out an application and gets permission to use it. Besides, one of his core concept that inspired my Eating project is Kumamon’s personality and attitude. He was created to be a funny and a little bit crazy bear who always think positive and perform anything happily. The creator examined that if Kumamon present how much he enjoys living here he will increase local people’s tendency in his city to happiness, then the happy population will spread positive feeling out to visitors and contribute them to travel to Kumamoto. That was the starter to create my first experiment about ‘design something which encourages a person to improve his/her emotions before pass it forward to others’ like helping one person and that one helping the next person after receiving your good action.

Target : This time I explore with the strangers in Dessau, who came from different countries so they have various cultures and diverse behaviours of eating but everyone have a relation with Anhalt university, Because, I would like to prove that this event could improve every relation in society not only close friends.

EX PER I M EN TS : 2 - Two - gethe r

Purpose : Encourage people to feed others or help friends to carry food by two-way spoons and forks. Moreover, the food needs to be mixed together on one plate so they should find the way to merge all ingredients together. Lastly, putting hands into the table cloth’s holes connected all participates’s movements. Therefore, those strangers need to start to communicate and help new friends with giving minds.

Project’s Plan : 1. Invited people in Dessau who are not a same group of friends - Strangers. 2. Let them take a seat, any seat they would like. 3. Served them separated Japanese curry’s ingredients : divided to 6 plates, potato/2 porks/chicken/apple/carrot in removable plates on the smaller size and prepared rice with curry sauces on the other side of a plate.

HR C ate ri ng

4. Provided them a two-way spoon and fork, each participant got one. 5. Introduce them 2 rules : 5.1) Keep cutlery straight to the opposite side only. 5.2) They can have only 2 pieces of plate in the same time. 6. Observed how they communicate to others with the equipment. 7. Asked them to put their hand in the table cloth’s holes.

Expectation : 1. Everyone will use the prototypes to feed others because they need to keep it straight so it might hit to the opposite side if they try to feed themsleves. 2. Improving a communication, focusing on meal. 3. Helping each other to share all ingredients. 4. Social trend to imitate strangers’ positive move. 5. Happiness at the present moment.

Analysing the experiment : first 2 minutes - Everyone is still confused how to use the equipment. 03:00 - Girls couple started to communicate to find the easiest way to eat. 04:00 - The other couples observed the girls couple then started to help each other. 05:00 - Gave them a hint about food to encourage them to exchange. 07:00 - One participant realised that the plates are removable, then they enjoyed mixing the ingredients. 22:00 - After they enjoyed the meal, one of them asked for the next challenge, so I offered them to try the table cloth’s holes/ 25:00 - They amazed me by feeding water to their mate without my expectation.

5. They are enjoyed and asked me for more challenges.

1. Too sunny effect a quality of pictures 2.Too windy made guests worried and blowed the paper plates. 3. Using unfamiliar food led them confused how to mix and eat food. 4. The paper table cloth was too fragile, it was broken from the wind before they put hands into the holes.

Further Step : 1. Reconstructing a plate to reach people easily. 2. Design some signature (colour/mark) to divide which side belongs to whom. 3. Change the material of all cutleries to be stable and have some weight. 4. The event might be establish inside the building. 5. Prepare some well-known food.

FINALIZATION

98

Background When I was working in Thailand at the biggest company, CP ALL(7-Eleven), I realised that most of the employees have been working there since they graduated and tend to keep working until retirement. A possible explanation for this is that I was observing and interviewing them for the reason of this loyalty. I could say that almost 90% give their opinions in the same direction as they feel like this workplace is their second home because they are happy to spend time with colleagues who are their second family too. Even though, they have to face stressful situations from careers’ responsibilities or quite low income compared with other giant companies in the same range.

HR C ate ri ng F I N A L I Z ATI O N

One of the oldest seniors who started working prompt with a company established for 28 years ago said that he prefers to earn a low salary or make no any progression in his career apart for starting every day with these good friends(co-workers) who bring him happiness. More importantly, I would like to give some explanation to show how CP-ALL’s workers live together, which creates a good relationship with company. For instance, in each section the co-workers are provided a kitchen where everyone could take a rest, eat food and share a meal by putting their own food in the centre. Not only for a lunch break but also breakfast or dinner together. Besides, they always find some reason to celebrate e.g. birthday party, retirement, new recruit, Christmas (even though they are Buddhists) or football world cup (even though Thailand has never qualified). It doesn’t matter what the event is, the way of eating together is kind of similar every time. Employees would bring their own cooked or buy food to join, participants have their own plates, open some nice music and enjoy chatting with unnecessary topics together. There is no doubt that someone like me who left this company always was warmly welcomed invited to join the event. In short, it seems to be that a communal meal could motivate people to share time together then help participants boost up their positive relationship that benefits communication in work procedures. Therefore, this experience inspired me to develop my final outcome.

Target At first, my project was focusing on people who live in the same community, even though they have their individual lives but people still need to talk ,to meet, to connect in some way. After the previous experimental’s results, I was discussing with my advisors to specify a target group again. Therefore, I questioned the thesis’s aim about ’why those people need to communicate to each other and which group of people keeps doing that as a routine’ to find the right target whom I should design for. Employees or co-workers who work share places or duties are the subject of my concern. They come from various backgrounds, educations, ages and maybe also have different nationalities or languages that might build them have a various behaviours. However, since they became colleagues, it doesn’t matter what scale of a company is but they would communicate to get the best result of works. In addition, I have read research of a new Cornell study performed that plenty of companies get good results by investing their amount of budget with upscale workplace eateries or at least catered meals to promote team spirit in their employees. Then they found that firefighter platoons who eat meals together have better group job performance and it boosts productivity compared with firefighter teams who dine solo. This was especially true when responsibility of work really needed to be delegated to other colleagues in the company (Kniffin 2015). One reason for this might be that employees could share their unique perspectives on or brainstorm solutions with a good surrounding and nice food during lunch time together. Eating together is a friendship tool that makes connection to colleagues in farflung departments. Furthermore, it makes you happier when we spend our work hours in an environment where people are establishing friendships, people will be happier at their job. ‘Even if it’s not the most natural thing for you to go and spend time with your co-workers, spending a time to develop those relationships is something I think you’ll be proud of as a human being and a professional in the long run’(Horn 2015). Thus, co-workers or people who need to communicate to each others, it would be pleasant for you to have some meals together for a better workplace relations and working effectively.

102

Overview The idea of my final outcome would create a positive communal meal to motivate co-workers to communicate and interactive activities with their colleagues. To begin with a design process, I have explored and experienced human interaction from the previous tests. The result has impressed me that everyone received the hidden message I sent. However, there are many things to develop that the final outcome would demonstrate to people. I divided the project into three interactive design sections, cutleries, foods, and processes. First of all, I improved the idea of long spoons and two-side spoons that I already tested. Besides, put the idea of encouraging people to connect to each other on plates design and solve the problem of sharing food from private spoon to another spoon.

H R Cate r in g F I N A L I Z ATI O N

Moving to another main factor of pleased people is food. This is a very important tool which effects all participants’ emotional directly. However, as I just can cook but not a professional as the chef and this food should deliver my message not only for eating. Last but not least, every part of the design would lead people to follow a new rule of eating without order or force them too much. They should enjoy and try to get some little hint with their friends. In conclusion, everyone could reach the goal, feed their stomach, together with a positive interaction.

Final Design

105

As my background skill is visual communication based on graphic and illustration design. I had no any experience how to produce some 3D before. However, to complete the final result I need to explore myself in the side-areas as product designer. Belonging to an Integrated design course, we are mixed up with a variety of designer’s type. I had got suggestions from them to develop the prototype version3. These following paragraph will examine how I integrated design skills into one project.

106

Coperate Identity

H R Cate r in g F I N A L I Z ATI O N

The concept of company would be in the middle of formal and informal to make people feel free to join with an asmostphere of something useful.

HR Catering’s Concept from Human Resource to Happy Relationships As everyone know this position in a company, HR : Human Resource is a team who take a responsibility to recruit a right man to the right job, be consultants for solve employees’ conflicts and so on. There are so many cases which are related that to human behaviours and their connection that HR tries to boost up people to have a good teamwork. This role reminded me of my thesis project that I and HR work in the same area but different methods. Therefore, I came up with the name of my final outcome as ‘HR’ which is shortened from ‘Happiness Relationships’. The catering aims to understand co-workers behaviours, analyse problems in the company and improve the relations through by special dining together.

LOGO

H R Cate r in g F I N A L I Z ATI O N

After I decided to develope a plate and spoon to be the final outcome. I realized that it could be an element for the others part of corporate identity. The logo was designed from a curve which is imitated from half circle shape of dish and one part of ‘R’ Gotham rounded typeface ( you also can find that with a dish in the following part). Moreover, it represents the meaning of word as a happiness with a big smile. Then, if you take a look in the middle of those alphabets, you will find that connected elements as relationships.

COLOURS Regarding the target group is co-workers in a company, they are adult workers who might take care of manager or executive positions. Invited company people to join a meal should be a proper, not too fancy as a teenager or too sweet pastel for girly. The blue and Rose were using in the production to balance a mood. Navy Blue performs as a reliability part but blooming dahlia represented a positive atmosphere which is a perfect combination for the final picture.

H R C ater in g F I N A L I Z ATI O N

An image of HR catering supposes to be in between of formal and casual. To explain this idea I would like to introduce colours palate I have chosen.

Main Colours 1. Navy blue : It is the colour or trust, honestly and responsibility which is necessary for work together as a team. It seems to be promoting both of physical and mental relaxation because it looks calm and relaxes. Navy Blue is the helper, the rescuer, the friend in need which is defined by the quality and quantity of its relationships. People uses this colour in terms of Navy solider or financial company (Kemmis 2000).

2. Rose quartz : This colour represents compassion, the giving and receiving of nurturing. A combination of red, white and orange, rose quartz delivers the need for action of red, boosting people to achieve the potential for success as a softness way and cheerfully offered by white and yellow. It also represents a feminine mood that can perform as a gentle care as lady behave (Kemmis 2000).

122

1. Connecting spoons and sporks The wooden spoon was bought from a shelf to support my idea. The idea was developed some tool which could convey food but not too easy as regular. Moreover, it should carry food to feed other who sit in the opposite side or a distance seat. I crafted one type of spoon with a hole to help participant grab a bread cone called 'spork' and keep the other type as a normal spoon to scoop ingredients. All included with joints and extra sticks to extend the length as far as a consumer want and also make it flexible for any size of company cafeteria's table.

H R Cate r in g F I N A L I Z ATI O N

Last but not least, they were painted by rose quartz tone to induce guests to connect with spoons. Besides, using a wood material to represent a friendly and relaxing emotional to users after they stressed with their careers parts.

126

2. Removable plates Removable plates which are able to exchange with others. I was created by the shapes of a circle to represent a completeness as the infinite, unity, and harmony among participant’s relationships. Then people could separate them into two pieces. Each side was inspired by a spiral and infinity to lead people move and connect one by one as an endless form. I was explored by ceramic first, unfortunately, the time was limited. So, I discovered the other way to produce, it’s called a vacuum former. These tools have received a lot of help from wood makers in a wood workshop. He taught me step by step since how to make a mould until making them perfect with scrub sand. Besides, a plastic material is safe for food, lightweight, and endure.

HR Cate ri ng F I N A L I Z ATI O N

The plates are not only bring all participants connect their dish but also solve a problem of feeding others. When some kind person offer you a food by his spoon that he still using in a meal, you might impress with his action but also concerned with safety. Therefore, pass this tool along the table would be a better way to feed the distance friends.

When food came to be an interactive object, the positioning of food need to organized. The hanging bar which is combined with wood sticks and round wooden can remove or connect easily. However, I designed the round base to be a small size for unstable control. Therefore, everyone need to help each others in this task too.

3. Invitation Napkins A common way to invite people to join some event is an invitation card. It represents polite manner and give precedence to others. However, good design should not create a waste stuff to earth.

H R Cate r in g F I N A L I Z ATI O N

The invitation card would benefit more than write down a name of guests so I combined a napkin cloth into it. After you receive the card, you could unfold a ribbon and enjoy the meal without worry of food’s stain. Lastly, guests could take it home and got a contact information as a business card that informed in the other side.

Bread Cone

H R Cate r in g F I N A L I Z ATI O N

As I am a designer not a chef, my food could not be perfect as a restaurant but I preferred to add more creativity instead. From the results of the latest experiment that I separated food, Japanese curry, into each dish.

The problem was people could not understand a purpose because they don’t know what is the exactly Japanese curry should combined with. This time, the food became some common as a pizza to easy to realise. The shape of cone came into my thought. I have found that this character is match with the core idea of interactive meal. All participants could use the tools to carry this pizza cone and fill any ingredients that I separated in to each half circle plates.

Results I would say that this project always surprised and impressed me. Since the first step all guests who studies in a monument heritage faculty together, they are classmate but not really like close friends. Participants responded to the table with a sound ‘wow‌.’ and enjoyed find their name on the invitation napkins then started to take a picture. Secondly, I served them different ingredients and a bar of pizza cone in the middle of a table. People wondered but they did not wait to hear an explanation from me, they just explored with themselves first. By the way, all tools always confused them so some of them use as a chopstick instead connect the stick with spoon. Moreover, they did not passed the plate in the middle as I expected but they exchange their different dish to others.

Later, I gave them some hints how to interact with tools then they realised and enjoyed the meal with friends. I have seen that no matter what they use a tools right or wrong way but it made people look after of others and also fed. Furthermore, this meal reduced a usage of mobile while they attending because they need to concentrate the situation in front of them.

1. They are willing to try out new way to eat with happiness.

1. One guest came delay for 1 hour late.

CONCLUSION

162

My starting point was my interest about how to bring happiness to people through foods. I have been started to discover the answer step by step from research and experiments.

H R Cate r in g CO N C LUSI O N

First of all, the Harvard’s study mentioned about how to make a better life, it shows that having a good relationship with friends, family and society is the most important part to be considered. Then I was discovering how to build a positive connection in society, there are some habits such as being a giver and helper which could be the right way. However, it seems like humans are too busy with their own stuff to care about the others’ problems. From this case, I decided to adjust my design into their routine life to be harmonious with them. In the end, it became something to do with eating because people is spending more than 3 times each day to engage with each others even though they are too rush. Moving to the next stage, I was creating the long handle spoons which are uncomfortable and too long to eat by themselves. I have found that people tend to fed themselves before fed or helped others. By the way, all my friends did not ignore when others asked for help. Secondly, I developed and did the second test with the two-side cutleries and also created the removable plates. In this test participants was enjoying under the sun, nice music, and delicious foods. Moreover, I also got some interesting feedback and result to develop in the final outcome. It seems like every steps went well, suddenly I realised that I have no any experience and skill to create a real product as my background was visual communication. Without doubt, I have received a plenty of help and suggestion from professors and classmates. Especially, the guys in ceramic and wood workshop who taught me how to complete my final outcome. Another area in which I need to focusing on is the specific target. Co-workers became the right group to help me examine the presumption. Because of everyone spending time at workplace with colleagues around 8 hours each day that could be more than stay at home with family. Therefore, it could be called as a second home which definitely effect your emotional in both way. Thus, I would like to support the HR department’ roles to improving the employee relations, then it came out to be “HR : Happy Relations Catering” company which I already mentioned before.

The latest experiment, I produced so many craft tools which helped to accomplish my works. Since I did some tests with special spoons before, this time I created connecting spoons and 'sporks' from wood, I learnt how to cut, to shape, form and to colour them. The problem of this step was how to make a removable plate. I tried with ceramic first but time was limited so I had to find out another choice. With some suggestions, it was created with plastic vacuum forming as a half circle shape followed my sketch. Furthermore, food should be something special and relates with tools too so I baked bread cone to hang and dip. During the test, all guests came inside with the Bossanova song atmosphere. I provided them with an invitation which is able to be a napkin later and gave them some rules to enjoy this meal. Mixed Thai spicy and pizza cone were served on the bar in the middle of table. At the beginning they are a little bit confused with the spoons and sporks. Some of them used them as a chopsticks and they did not grab the cone to dip with all ingredients as I expected. However, after some hints and time, they realised how to interact with this meal. I could say that 90% of this meal created a positive feeling among those people. Being givers and helpers happened when they tried to get the food and fed others. In the end of event, they told me very nice responses without words, their smiles and laughs and also better relations compared with the earlier part of test were the best words for a designer like me. In summary, I am so proud of my progression and I understand the meaning of integrated course which I am studying now. I would say that not only the food improved all my target group during the tests but also help me to meet new friends, get closer to my classmates, and so many things that I never expected from the food project. I believe this innovation is valuable to try out in the real case to build up a team spirits. The interaction meal creates a situation that people need to help and interact each others. Indeed, everyone would have healthier relations and happy with the good thing they did to people surrounded by. Lastly, I would like to improve and promote this project in my hometown to enlarge a happiness with people surrounded by. Have a nice meal :)
