Bienville Courtyards

Urban Infill Multi-Family Housing Individual Studio Project Location: French Quarter, New Orleans, Louisiana Semester: Fall 2023 Instructors: Derek Hoeferlin A re-purposing of existing surface parking lots at the edge of the New Orleans French Quarter, the project is a 25unit mixed income houing development developed from evolutions of the historic vernacular. The project also captures the spirit of local housing by incorporating the iconic courtyards and covered exterior spaces of the surrounding housing stock, but in a way that allows greater density and access to multiple floors of the building.

Initial inspiration was taken from the exisitng housing stock in the surrounding French Quarter. The central ideas to the project were the holistic integration of both covered and uncovered exterior space and the adaptation of the traditional Creole cottage vernacular plan. The courtyards and loggias of the exisitng context provide a natural gradient fo space between public and private as well as interior and exterior, while the cottage plan lent its adjoining square rooms and massive walls for both climatic and threshold purposes. These characteristics were developed into the unit plans that would coalesce into the greater building aggregation: each unit shares a covered exterior courtyard with a second unit, accessibile off of the main circulatory corridor to provide an additional buffer of space between public and private. The units themselves borrow the square rooms of the creole cottage, though with the addition of a 1/2 width corridor space containing all of the plumbing and circulation to both economize the unit and provide a more contemporary understanding of privacy and separation. Every unit also either overlooks or has direct access to an open exterior space reached by moving through the living space, providing a final degree of privacy while also bringing in light and air without sacrificing privacy.

Longitudinal Section

The paired units are aggregated along a central circulatory spine, loaded with the residences towards the street and public courtyards an amenity spaces towards the adjacent buildings. Exterior courtyards are sunk to a variety of levels within the project, giving private exterior access to a majority of the residents across all floors. The most represented unit in the project is a hyper-efficient 350sf studio apartment aimed at providing an affordable living space for many of the French Quarter service workers currently priced out of much of the neighborhood. Representing 11 out of the 25 units, the project is designed to be both mixed-income and maximize the diversity of living situations with 1-bed, 2-bed, and 3-bed units that can accomodate singles, couples, or small- to mid-size families.

Community Greenhouse Green Education within Existing Community Individual Studio Project Location: St. Louis, Missouri Semester: Fall 2022 Instructors: Bruce Lindsey|Ryan Abendroth

Prompted to create a community greenhouse and education space in St. Louis’ noted Forest Park, the project focused on a simple and demountable wood structure to allow a portion of the program to be deconstructible and deployable into neighborhoods around the city lacking access to community gardening and ecological education. The main greenhouse building would be permanently situated in the park yearround, providing a home base and germination space for the deployed ancillary building.

The proposed Forest Park site for the project contained a mix of both existing structure and natural elements, including a park facilities building and public bathrooms in addition to trees of various species and maturity. Early on in the design process I decided to preserve as much of the exisitng character of the site as possible, including the bathroom building and a towering oak tree central to the site (left, expressed in red). The early conception of the building frame built off of this idea, with minimal connective points to the ground. The structural framing was designed to allow the greatest degree of winter sunlight in while limiting the summer sun to desirable levels for plant growth.

The unique structural profile of the greenhouse is designed with both climate and construction in mind. Double-layer framing both strengthens the structural bays while also creating a space for a solar chimney effect, using operable windows on the south and north facades to allow air to freely circulate through the greenhouse during most seasons. The southern facade is glazed with a translucent polycarbonate to protect the plants inside from harsh direct sunlight, while the north facade features clear glazing set in large operable doors that can be swung open in the temperate months. The entirety of the structural frame is designed with transportability and assembly as a key feature, with no single element requiring a vehicle larger than a standard box truck to transport and basic joints used as often as possible. Assembly and disassembly could be limited mainly to unskilled labor and could take place over the course of 2-3 days.

The main greenhouse building, containing a large growing space as well as administrative offices, would remain grounded at the project site year-round to provide a base of operations and support exterior community plots. However the ancillary building, a teaching-focused structure with a smaller footprint, could be deployed to different neighborhoods around the city for 9 months at a time. Designed specifically to fit into a typical St. Louis lot, the structure could be assembled on a vacant city-owned lot and serve the immediate surroundings. In the inset site plan and above rendering, the greenhouse is shown deployed next to a local elementary school.

Core House

Community Development without Exclusion Individual + Group Studio Project Location: Northside, Cincinnati, Ohio Semester: Spring 2020 Instructor: Whitney Hamaker In collaboration with a local housing advocacy group, the project exmined effective methods of construction for new single-family homes for current residents in Cincinnati’s historic Northside neighborhood. With the average median income of the area at $55,000, the project balanced quality in design and materials with affordability. Carried out over several phases of individual and group work, the studio of 15 began with intensive individual research followed by refinement of selected projects, before culminating in a group effort to deliver a fully-realized and constructible design to the local housing group. Research from this studio has been compiled into a book pending publication in 2022.

INDIVIDUAL

The research phase of the studio began with an individually assigned set of randomly selected variables to test and evaluate their conceptual compatibility. A preliminary design was created based on these random typologies, and their congruences were assessed (see left matrix). Based on the design matrices from the collective studio, the project was refined with intentionally selected compatible variables for a more cohesive and feasible design focus. In its second iteration the project focused on sustainability, privacy, and masonry construction. Seasonal daylighting and water recapture informed the initial design moves along the exterior of the house. Inspiration from the tectonic building core of large-scale and highly efficient residential projects informed the creation of a central interior “core”, from which the project took its name.

Studio peers selected several individual designs for group study in Round 2, including the Core House. Using insights gained from the research phase, the plan was tightened around the core to allow for efficient centralization of plumbing, HVAC, and circulation space, while freeing up peripheral living space for the bedrooms and common areas.

to proceed to the final round of design. While the sacrosanct core remained in place, the plan was altered to allow a first-floor ADA bathroom. The exterior of the house was extensively re-imagined to include more dialogue with the interior spaces while still maintaining elements of daylighting and water recapture. Pricing estimates were undertaken by a local contractor, bidding the overall construction costs of the Core House at $250,000 to $300,000 (pre-COVID figures), within the initial targeted price range.

Working as a small group, the Core House team developed drawings to the level of a 90% Construction Document Set for the local housing group, with plans to construct a number of houses based on the design of the project and the studio’s two other final designs. Coordination with local contractors ensured that the house would be feasibly constructible in an efficient and affordable manner.

Soulard Artists Residences

Exhibition and Studio Pressed into Hillside Individual Studio Project Location: Soulard, St. Louis, Missouri Semester: Spring 2023 Instructors: Anna Bach | Eugeni Bach | Aaron Schumpf Programmed both as public gallery exhibition and private artist-in-residence studio, the project operates on a gradient of public and private facing space while negotiating a drastic change in topography. The different volumes of program are pressed into the ground and connected by a network of courtyards and arched ‘tunnels’ that sporadically surface to provide moments of relief and light.

Site Plan

With the main public exhibition entrance located to the north of the site, the building gradually becomes more privately oriented as the programming progresses south, culminating in a loading dock and workshop space immediately adjacent to the industrial context along the southern facade of the project. The building’s programmatic elements are set as individual brick volumes buffered by void courtyards and connected by one central and often underground concrete circulatory spine. This arched tunnel begins underground and surfaces at key moments of intersection with the program to provide both light and relief. The project begins with exhibiton spaces located the closest to the nearby neighborhood, before transitioning to individual studio and living spaces for three resident artists and ultimate culminating in fabrication and material storage space at the rear entrance to the south.

Though the majority of the existing site is graded 15-30’ above the surrounding streets, the main public entrance is set at street level as a single arch in a brick wall spanning the length of the facade. As the occupant progresses through the building, the floor plates slowly step up to reach grade level at the other end of the site through a series of gradual ramps.

Greenhills Co-Housing A Reimagining of Suburban Community Individual Studio Project Location: Greenhills, Ohio Semester: Spring 2019 Instructor: Stephen Slaughter

Situated in a neighborhood originally designed during the 1950’s as the “new suburban ideal,” the project aims to reexamine the creation of a collaborative and communitybased setting that balances privacy, proximity, and public space. Multi-unit structures, relocated parking, and multifaceted common spaces break from the staid suburban typology.

In contrast to traditionally car-centric suburbia, the project focuses on encouraging foot traffic throughout the site in the interest of greater interpersonal connections. Parking is relocated to the extremes of the site and concentrated in communal lots screened by foliage and structures. Units are carefully distributed throughout the site, creating intentioned points of threshold that open into shared exterior greens. A community sports court, small gathering space, and shared gardening plots form a distinct backbone of shared activities for residents while allowing space for additional interests and recreational pursuits stemming from formed bonds within the group.



THE UNIT Traditional suburbia is centered on the idea of the individual single-family home, and the individualist mindset does nothing to encourage community. The project departs from this language by introducing shared structures inhabited by multiple families. A reimagining of the typology also allows a restructuring of the formal layout, separating the public spaces of the unit from the more intimate private spaces. In a densely inhabitated neighborhood, view considerations are paramount. The project addresses this twofold in a layout careful to avoid facing window walls, but also with recessed window boxes designed with the purpose of framing private view corridors.
