ORSEM 2019
YL5 PRIMER
FOREWORD
Hello Yl5! "Lusong" can mean many things, but in this context, lusong is "to dive." The one thing that is special about "lusong" is that whenever we dive, there is a reason. We dive in order to get something or to see something. However, not all dives are successful. Sometimes what we want to get and what we want to see is no longer there, but this is not supposed to stop us from diving in. Much like in your first year of med school, there will be many highs and lows in your dive. Still, don't be scared of diving back in even though you do not succeed at times!
Sa bawat lusong 'wag malungkot sa hindi nakita o nakuha, lumusong lang at sumubok muli. Love, Boom Hello YL5! Perhaps one of the things we want to emphasize as a batch is that med school may seem daunting (and it really is) but amidst all the uncertainty and stress—is the bountiful wonderful experiences and friends you’ll meet along the way. All of these you’ll never really know unless you “dive.” The invitation for everyone is to not see, hear, or experience med school from a distance but to really immerse yourself to the experience and let it surprise you. Huwag matakot lumundag at tumaya, YL5! My partner could not have not said it any better—sa bawat lusong, 'wag malungkot sa hindi
nakita o nakuha, lumusong lang at sumubok muli. Love, Gob

INTRODUCTION
Here in ASMPH, we believe that the students should strive to be three things: an outstanding clinician, dynamic leader and social catalyst. Don’t understand what means? Well, you should just wait and see. They say YL5 will be one of the most difficult years you’ll have in your journey on becoming a doctor. Trust us, there will be late nights, heavy workloads, and pressure you’ve never felt before in you life. 14 Medical Modules plus 2 MBA classes for your first year is no easy feat. But, don’t worry! You’ll find your own way and the ASMPH community will be right by your side.
5
Year Levels
YL5 This is the year that’s all bout the normal human body. The curriculum is organized into modules per organ system and each module will center around the basic sciences of anatomy, histology, biochemistry, and physiology.
YL6 This year tackles illnesses and diseases in the human body! The curriculum is again organized by organ system, each discussing pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, and parasitology.
YL7 This year takes a more clinical approach in discussing the organ system. This is also the last year in a classroom!
YL8 This is the year when you can finally be considered working individuals. Throughout this, you’ll be spending clinical rotations in different departments in both public and private hospitals. Here, you’ll be learning clinical approaches from first hand experience! Previous batches have had to earn their MBA on this year, but there are rumors that might be a bit sooner!
YL9 Clinical internship is the last year you’ll have under ASMPH. Unlike other schools, ASMPH students have their internship program under the school. This year will serve as an integration of everything you’ve learned throughout your entire med school life.
6
Modular System
Here in ASMPH, we have a modular system. Don’t know what it is? It’s basically studying one body system within a span of two weeks to one month. This includes everything about that system like anatomy, histology, physiology, and more. ASMPH designed the modular system so that students may integrate concepts better. Obviously, this system is different from all the other medical schools. It has both its pros and cons but it’s worked for many ASMPH graduates. Soon, you’ll find out too!
REMOVALS SYSTEM Weren’t able to make that passing mark? ASMPH provides removal exams at the end of the year to those who weren’t able to make that 60. Beware though! Removal exams are tricky and there is a real risk of retention or dismissal so it’s best to avoid them. If you do take them, your batch and the rest of the ASMPH community will try their best to make sure you make it to YL6! Provisional Failure means that one has to take removals. If one passes the removal exam, the QPI will be changed from a 1.0 to 1.5. One can be retained in YL5 if one does not fail more than 17.4 units.
GRADING SYSTEM In YL5, there are a total of 58 units. In order to get promoted, you’ll need to get at least 60% (QPI of 1.5) in all the modules, including MBA. The QPI equivalent of grade percentages is as follows: 4.0
95-100%

Transing System
Each year level, some trans groups even make their own transing system. Based on previous batches, these tips are useful: BE ORGANIZED It is very important that the trans is as organized as possible. This helps with understanding and learning so you and your trans group should also organized.
If you haven’t noticed, everyone has been divided into trans groups. These are the people you will be working with throughout the year to make transes. Transcriptions or transes are not raw verbatim write-ups but process information in a more digestible format. Many use them to study for tests and consider them a lifeline if you’re lost in translation when reading the book or recalling the lecture.
8
DIFFERENT LEARNING DEVICES Don’t just simply transcribe the lectures. If the content is confusing, use your own words to simplify the concept. Use mnemonics, review questions, or any relevant information. FIGURES AND ILLUSTRATIONS Not everyone learns well through reading. Sometimes, some concepts could be better understood through figures and illustrations, so make sure to add them! LABELS In lab transes, labels are the most important aspect. Make sure to label the right thing! ROTATION OF ROLES Sometimes the roles you initially pick might not be the best fit for you. As long as your trans group goes with it, why not? PRE-TRANS Many previous batch transes will be available to you at the beginning of the year. Take advantage of this, and cross-reference with the lecture.
Transing Roles
SCRIBE Takes down notes during the lecture, both from the PPT as well as relevant information said by the lecturer
AUDIO TRANSCRIBER Transcribes the recording in case there are things that the scribe has missed (NOTE: the group should ask permission if recording is allowed). COMPILER Organizes the information and literally compiles and formats the content to fit the trans format CHECKER Reviews the content made by the group to see if the information they input is correct TRANS POLICE Answers to the Transcription Committee of the batch. They upload the final transes to the class drive and check the final content to be uploaded.
Lab transes are done mostly in histology lab. Taking photos of cadavers is not allowed! Transcriptions are only supplementary materials when learning the lesson. The lecturer will still expect you to read the book. Have a mindset that you are not only doing it to pass but mostly to help your future patients. #ParaSaBayan

FIRST SEMESTER YL5 Module Guides
PRINCIPLES AND PERPECTIVES 3 units | 2 weeks
Module Description This module introduces concepts of health, wellness, and health promotion on an individual and systemic level. It is meant to fulfill the school’s mission to form doctors that are outstanding clinicians, dynamic leaders, and social catalysts.. Sciences involved: Social Sciences
2023 Says While this module doesn’t deal with any of the biological sciences yet, it will teach you how to take a patient’s history and how to build rapport with a patient—two important skills needed for the succeeding patient encounters throughout the year.
Study Tips
DOs Use this module to experiment with different study styles and habits to find what works best for YOU. Remember—what works for someone else may not necessarily work for you!
Don’t underestimate the foundations of public health that you will learn from this module; the most complicated concepts can be rooted back to the simplest things that PnP actually covers!
Finish the coverage for the exam as much as possible because they distribute the questions evenly.
Don’t stress yourself out too much during PnP! (save it for the succeeding modules).
This will be the easiest module so do your best to get a high grade!
10
DON’Ts
YL5 Module Guides
CELL 6 units | 4 weeks
Module Description The first science-heavy module you’ll encounter. It will focus mostly on biochemistry and physiology, including the biological processes within the body that happen on a molecular level. Sciences involved: Biochemistry, Physiology, Histology
2023 Says Welcome to your first real science-focused module! Big adjustment period (especially coming from PnP), but don’t worry because the load is manageable. Note that a lot of the basics you learn in Cell will show up again and again in different modules, so try not to forget them!
Study Tips
DOs Read the textbook/references during your free time because it will help you understand the lessons better! Harper’s is the recommended reference book by profs, but Lippincott is easier to understand. Find a method that will help you connect the pathways! Whether it’s drawing them over and over again, talking about it with classmates, narrating each step in your head—just know how the different pathways relate to each other.
DON’Ts As much as possible, do not cram. The module is 4 weeks so you have a good amount of time to get your study habits straight and prepare for the exams properly. With all the pathways and important steps to memorize, try your best not to cram it a few days before the test. Don’t panic because of the sudden increase in academic load; it’s best to realize early on that pacing yourself is the best way to survive any module.
Proactively listen in class and don’t be afraid to ask questions! If you’re not the type to ask a question in front of the whole class, you can approach the lecturer afterwards. It’s always best to ask them directly, especially if you don’t understand a fundamental concept. Understand what you are studying, rather than just memorize. Trust us, it will be better for you in the long-run.
11
YL5 Module Guides
HEMATOLOGY & IMMUNOLOGY 2 units | 2 weeks
Module Description This module is shorter than Cell and you’ll definitely feel it fly by, so be ready for that change of pace! The first week will focus on the Hematologic system and the second week will focus on the Immune system. Sciences involved: Physiology, Biochemistry, Histology
2023 Says Doc Tee is a great lecturer! Actively listen in his class because he’ll really try to make it engaging so that you remember the topics. Be careful though, there’s only one major exam in this module (the final) so try to do well, and take the quizzes seriously!
Study Tips
DOs For histology lab, know how to differentiate the different types of blood cells under the microscope! Don’t just base it off how it should look according to the book, try to see actual microscopic images of each. Going to online academic sites with pictures and quizzes might help.
Do not put off studying until the last minute. Since it’s only a 2 week module, you may feel like you can fit all the coverage in a few days, but try not to. Doc Tee doesn’t just ask objective questions but also asks case-based questions in his exams, which will be difficult to answer if you did not take time to understand the concepts.
Try to read ahead! Compared to cell, a lot of concepts might feel new in this module, so always try and stay on top of things.
Don’t take the quizzes for granted—they will comprise a big chunk of your grade.
Prepare for the quizzes because forcing yourself to study in advance will help once you start nearing the final exam. Pay attention and be ready for recitation—Doc Tee likes going around the room and asking questions!
12
DON’Ts
Don’t underestimate this module! Hematology (week 1) might be easy but Immuno (week 2) is much more technical and challenging.
YL5 Module Guides
MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM 5.5 units | 4 weeks
Module Description This module covers gross and microscopic anatomy, and it is also the first module where imaging modalities (radiology) are introduced, This is also the start of cadaver dissections— one of the most awaited milestones in med school! Since this module is all about Anatomy, it may seem overwhelming with the sheer amount of how much you have to memorize. But you can do it! Pace yourself. Find the study habits that work for you, and listen to your lecturers! Sciences involved: Anatomy, Histology, Radiology, Physiology
2023 Says One of the most fun modules but also very tiring and challenging due to the amount of info you’re expected to know! Your first cadaver experience will feel surreal, but do your best to make the most out of what you will learn from your cad.
Study Tips
DOs Maximize your time in the Anatomy lab! Roam around and look at the cadavers of other groups in case there are anatomical variations. Take note that all the cadavers are used for the moving lab exam so you’ll need to know how to identify the muscles, nerves, and vessels not just in your cadaver, but in everyone else’s as well. Memorize, memorize! Knowing the origin, insertion, action, innervation, and blood supply of each muscle is a MUST. It’s a real pain, but it must be done. (It helps to study the muscles by groups!) Read the blue boxes in Moore! Doc Jocson loves asking about those in his exams. Memorize the brachial plexus! Know its components, how to draw it, what conditions will happen if it’s injured, and how to identify it in the cadaver (it will look different from the book). Always remember to treat your cadavers with respect.
DON’Ts Don’t be a bad anatomy groupmate! Arrive on time, study beforehand so you can go to lab prepared, and try not to monopolize the dissection time so that everyone gets a chance to learn. Remember that your classmates are just as excited as you are to explore the human body! Don’t skip the review lecture held by the physical therapists of the upper batch. They are very high yield and they’ll give you tips and tricks to remember important information for the test. They’ve been through Doc Jocson’s tests before so they know what they like to ask in his exams! Don’t sleep during Doc Pebbles’ lectures! (Ideally, try not to sleep during any lecture). This is something she really hates and she will call you out on it. Don’t waste your lab time! Lab sessions are usually 4 hours, and you won’t be dissecting the whole time. When you’re not dissecting, spend time memorizing the bones, reading your atlases, or roaming around and studying other cadavers.
13
YL5 Module Guides
HEAD & NECK 5 units | 3 weeks
Module Description Difficult but brilliant, this is one of those modules that the upperclassmen warn you about. Focusing on the anatomy of the Head and Neck region, everything is much smaller and easier to cut so be careful during dissection sessions. Listen to Doc Sam’s lectures because she’ll give you useful mnemonics and tips to help you pass this module! Sciences involved: Anatomy, Physiology, Histology, Radiology
2023 Says Listen to Doc Sam! Again: LISTEN TO DOC SAM. This module is notorious for being difficult, but it can also be fun if you really pay attention and study well! Do your best but don’t push yourself to the point of burning out. Remember, you still have 2 modules after this.
Study Tips
DOs Listen to Doc Sam’s lectures! Everything you need will be in her lectures and in the examples she gives. If she notes that something is important, it will probably show up in the exam. Use your lab time well and dissect as best as you can because if not, Doc Sam will dissect for you right before the exam, leaving you no time to study the structures you were not able to find. Understand as well as memorize because Doc Sam sometimes likes to ask analysis questions in her lecture exams, and is also fond of asking 2step or 3-step questions. Learn how to spell the muscles correctly (or almost correctly)! Unlike the lab exams of the previous modules, Doc Sam’s lab tests are identification! Ask questions during lab time; the structures are much smaller and might be harder to identify.
14
DON’Ts Don’t cram! More than the content itself, what makes the module difficult is the sheer amount of info you need to learn in the short time given;. Really make use of the free time you have to study the lectures, but don’t forget to take short breaks every so often! Don’t let the stories and warnings of the upper batches intimidate you! The load is tough but manageable, as long as you figure out a study system that works for you and you pace yourself. Don’t fall asleep in class! You might doze off for 3 minutes and then wake up to Doc Sam teaching a whole new topic.
YL5 Module Guides
CARDIOVASCULAR & RESPIRATORY SYSTEMS 5 units | 3 weeks
Module Description This module tackles the anatomy, functions, and physiology of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. You might feel tired entering this module coming from MSK and Head and Neck, but do not underestimate Cardio-Respi. This module teaches you how to identify the heartbeat sounds, read an ECG, take someone’s BP, and it’s the first module where you’ll perform a physical exam on a real patient! Sciences involved: Physiology, Anatomy, Radiology, Histology
2023 Says After the 3-week sprint that is Head and Neck, and the approaching Christmas break in sight, you’ll feel like taking a break during this module—DON’T. For a lot of us, this was our burnout module and it showed in our performance and attendance. But just keep going, pace yourself and your studying so that you won’t have to cram 3 weeks worth of lessons in a few days.
Study Tips
DOs READ YOUR BOOKS—this will save you especially if you didn’t understand the lectures. Try to review the lectures on the same day they were given because the coverage for exams are long. This module is fast-paced, and the topics don’t get easier so try not to get left behind. Practice doing the physical exam with your classmates so that you’re prepared when you face the patient!
DON’Ts Don’t just rely on the transes (and this rings true for any module) but try to supplement your learning with other references that can help you understand the concepts better. Read books, watch videos, find academic websites, etc. Do not underestimate this module. The respiratory system is no joke and the concepts related to it can be very difficult to understand, especially if you’re not focused in class.
Study and understand the formulas that will be taught. They’re needed in order to understand the relationship of the variables and how they affect each other!
15
YL5 Module Guides
FAMILY & COMMUNITY HEALTH | RESEARCH 2 units | 1 week
Module Description The FCH portion of the module lasts 1 week, and is the last module before Christmas break. This portion focuses on Public Health and will have an exam at the end of the weeks. It will be tempting to zone out after 2 months of non-stop Anatomy and Physiology, but try to stay present and continue attending the lectures because the Public Health lessons will give you a different perspective to the health system. The research portion runs throughout the whole year. There will be research lectures and SGDs scheduled that will introduce the basic concepts of research. These lectures will assist you in forming your own initial research proposal, which you will defend at the end of the year to a member of the faculty. Sciences involved: Public Health, Research
2023 Says After several months of non-stop hard sciences, this is a refreshing module to have. It gives practical & realistic facts about health and the practice of healthcare in the PH, which ties in the public health aspects of our curriculum. Choose a research topic you’re passionate about so you can defend it strongly, and choose a type of research you are familiar with (quantitative vs qualitative, etc.).
Study Tips
DOs Periodically update your research proposal! Doc Julius has checkpoints throughout the year where he will check and grade your progress. Prepare for and pay attention during the research lectures and SGDs. It will help you formulate a good research topic and will prevent you from cramming a year’s worth of Research lectures a few days before your topic defense. Respect the time of the guest lecturers. These are professionals who are experts in their fields and have taken time out of their busy schedules to teach us (and this goes for all modules!).
16
DON’Ts Don’t slack off during this module! It’s easy so try your best to get a good grade to raise your QPI. More than that, do your best to really appreciate the public health aspects of medicine! Don’t cut too many classes. With Christmas break fast approaching, it will be tempting to just tap out, but try to finish 1st sem strong! Also, remember that attendance might be a part of your grade component.
SECOND SEMESTER YL5 Module Guides
GASTROINTESTINAL SYSTEM 6.5 units | 5 weeks
Module Description This module tackles each and every organ found in the torso region. You’ll be revisiting lessons that were discussed in cell, so brush up on that! Make the most of your lab time to really see the organs in relation to each other and to see how the structure follows the function. You will also have a graded physical exam for this module so practice on/with someone as much as you can so you don’t miss out on anything! Sciences involved: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Histology, Radiology
2023 Says While it may be the most fun, don’t just focus on Anatomy for this module. The other Sciences are just as important (especially physiology and histology!) You’ll be given a lot of time in the Histology lab to look at the slides, so make use of that time!
Study Tips
DOs
DON’Ts
Pace yourself. This is a very long module and the number of exams you can have in a day can sometimes be as high as four! Thus, it is important to plan out your studying to prevent burnout.
Don’t become complacent! exams this module and you can slack off for a few and remember—consistency is well in medical school.
Utilize other sources such as Youtube videos to supplement the lecture and transes.
Don’t take the nutrition portion for granted! Memorize the equations—you may need them in the future.
Be respectful to the lecturers as they may make the exams easier or harder based on class behavior. Make sure you know how to differentiate the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum, and know important characteristics specific to each segment because that will help you during the Histo lab exam.
There will be many might think that you just make bawi. But key to performing
Don’t expect the module to always follow the schedule. Sometimes lectures may be moved due to the availability of the professor, so be ready to adapt!
17
YL5 Module Guides
RENAL 2.5 units | 2 weeks
Module Description This module takes an in-depth look into the processes that occur within the urinary system. The bulk of the lectures will be physiology with a few covering histology, anatomy, and radiology. Thus, it is important to understand the processes that occur and where they happen. Sciences involved: Anatomy, Histology, Radiology, Physiology
2023 Says The module will be very fast-paced and will feel overwhelming at times due to its brevity (the module is notorious for being one of the hardest modules in YL5). The main grade component will come from the written exams (quizzes and final) so make sure to study well and often!
Study Tips
DOs Reading (and understanding) Vander's cover to cover is a must for this module. Most of the exam coverage will be based on the contents of the book. Read the transes, but note that this should come second to reading Vander’s as content from the transes only come out in the final. Use them to supplement each other. Make the most of the ISTs (independent study time) that will be given to you. Use this time to study the topics already discussed and read ahead for the topics to come! Be able to reconstruct the pathways from memory as this will help you recall them during the exam.
18
DON’Ts Don’t cram. The amount of information you need to learn for this module cannot be crammed a day before. This module is notorious for being one of the hardest modules in YL5 so it’s important to work hard and work smart.
YL5 Module Guides
REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM 6 units | 4 weeks
Module Description This module will cover the theoretical and practical applications of the reproductive system. During the OB portion, there will be flipped classroom sessions where your trans group will be assigned to teach your batchmates certain topics, so be prepared for that (unless they decide to change it up this year)! You will also have a hospital rotation where you may even see a live birth! Sciences involved: Anatomy, Histology, Radiology, Physiology
2023 Says This will be a long module but luckily, it is scheduled well so the pace is manageable. Nevertheless, it is important to still pace yourself so that you will not become complacent. Enjoy Doc Soriano’s lectures, you’ll be inspired by his passion and his humor!
Study Tips
DOs
DON’Ts
Listen to the lectures of Doc Bless! She explains the concepts of embryology very well.
Don’t underestimate the anatomy coverage of the exams as these can be tricky.
Read William’s for topics covered in flipped classroom sessions.
Don’t neglect the public health aspects of the module. Questions will be taken from these portions of the lecture.
Make the most of the many lab sessions (anat AND histo) that are scheduled during the module to study the cadavers and slides! Take note that the information from the book is sometimes different from what is taught in the lecture, so always clarify with your lecturer which info to study for the exam.
Even though it’s not required, try not to miss the hospital rotation because it’s a good chance to see the concepts you’ve been learning applied in real life!
19
YL5 Module Guides
NEUROSCIENCE 5.5 units | 4 weeks
Module Description This module will give you a great appreciation for the brain and nervous system. You will be able to view the brain in different ways and learn the different pathways that facilitate how people control their movements and sense things in their environment. Heavy emphasis will be placed on anatomy, physiology, and how these can be evaluated in the clinic. This will be the last module in YL5 where you will have to conduct a physical examination. Luckily, the lecturers will provide many resources for you to use for your review especially for learning the proper techniques for the OSCE. Sciences involved: Anatomy, Histology, Radiology, Physiology
2023 Says This will be one of the most fun modules. Not only will you be taught by some of the best in the field but you will also learn the humanistic side of the subject. Savor every moment of this module as Doc Ronibats teaches very well. #AteneoBrain
Study Tips
DOs Listen to Doc Ronibats’ lectures as they are very high yield and he’ll try to really make sure that you understand what he’s talking about! Many of his questions are analysis type and situational rather than rote memorization. Read DeMyer’s for studying physiology and parts about the physical exam. Practice, practice, practice for the OSCE! Some of the preceptors can be very particular about the techniques. More than just being able to perform the tests, know how to report your findings to your preceptor!
20
DON’Ts Don’t disregard the readings Doc Ronibats gives. Not only do they give valuable insight into the “human” aspect of medicine but also serve as the basis for some bonus points in the exam. Don’t take your lab time for granted. Doc Ronibats will give quizzes at the end of each session so make sure to remember the target structures for that session. Don’t skip the scheduled preceptorials! First of all, they’re graded. But more importantly, your preceptor will show you how to perform the tests that you’re expected to perform on your patients in the OSCE.
YL5 Module Guides
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM 2.5 units | 4 weeks
Module Description This module covers the different pathways the body uses to regulate its functions through hormones. Similar to the renal module, this module is fast-paced has a lot of information to be learned. Sciences involved: Anatomy, Histology, Radiology, Physiology
2023 Says There’s a lot of free time during this module but don’t make the mistake of being too chill! Make the most out of those ISTs by studying. For many, Endo ended up being one of the most difficult modules. However, like all other modules, it is manageable!
Study Tips
DOs Make diagrams to help you better understand the different pathways. Read Guyton and supplement it with the transes to maximize your understanding. Take advantage of the opportunities given to get extra bonus points!
DON’Ts Don’t procrastinate in studying for this module. The content of the lessons takes time to learn so it will be best to maximize the time you have in this short module to prepare for the exams. Don’t waste the free time given to you. A big chunk of this module will rely on self studying! Do not underestimate this module. With only 1012 lectures, a lot of free time, and summer break within your reach, you might not feel the sense of urgency anymore. Fight this feeling and keep pushing through!
21
YL5 Module Guides
HUMAN DEVELOPMENT 2 units | 2 weeks
Module Description This module deals with the human lifespan development from birth to old age. From infants to geriatrics, you’ll learn about the physical, cognitive, and emotional changes of each age group! You won’t need to worry too much about any of the hard sciences in this module as it will mostly focus on social sciences.
Science involved: Social Sciences
2023 Says It’s finally the last module but don’t give in to those summer vibes just yet! This module can be described as PnP’s more difficult cousin.
Study Tips
DOs Listen well to the lectures as these will be a big basis of the exams. Read the assigned readings. Some questions may be taken verbatim from them. Make a table of the different important milestones (for babies and toddlers) to aid you in reviewing!
22
DON’Ts Don’t get too complacent! Yes, this module is one of the easier ones so you can slow down a bit, but don’t start slacking off yet. Finish the year strong!

PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT 3 units | 1st Semester
Module Description This class will give you the basic concepts of management, from definition of terms to applying these concepts in real life cases. This class will have a midterm and a final exam, and some professors may choose to give quizzes.
2023 Says MBA classes happen once a week for a whole afternoon, and it’s a welcome change of pace. Even though med subjects are what you will most likely be focused on, try to make the most out of your MBA classes and apply the theories outside class as well! MBA is so much easier to appreciate when you strive to apply lessons in SGDs, TBLs, group projects, org work, and other commitments.
Study Tips
DOs Pay attention in class when your professor does a case analysis. Learn how it’s done and how to identify what qualifies as important information for the case. During the midterm and final exams, you will be expected to do a case analysis on the spot, so be prepared for that!
DON’Ts Don’t take the concepts you learn in PriMan for granted. These are the concepts that you’ll be applying, and maybe the problems that you’ll also be facing, when you have your own clinic or practice one day!
Read the book or transes before class because there are pre-quizzes given about the topic that will be discussed that day.

YL5 Module Guides
HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT 3 units | 2nd Semester
Module Description This class is a little more hands-on than PriMan because you’ll be asked to interview healthcare professionals and make a strategic management paper on a company. Remember these concepts and how to apply them in real situations because they will come in handy in the future! Especially when you have to make your own individual Strategic Management paper in 4th year.
2023 Says MBA classes are able to give you a different perspective from what you learn during the rest of the week. Although what we learn is tailored for the healthcare setting, it’s interesting to see how managers and leaders think when it comes to running hospitals or dealing with doctors and subordinates, and how to handle problems more related to business than medicine that we wouldn’t normally think of.
Study Tips
DOs Make the most out of your interviews. You’ll be given the chance to interview actual healthcare professionals for this class, so take advantage of the opportunity to really learn from someone who has firsthand experience on what it’s like being a leader and a doctor at the same time.
DON’Ts Don’t be a freeloader! There are more group papers to write for this class compared to PriMan, so make sure to always contribute to the output. Remember, all your classmates are balancing the same load as you are academically so that shouldn’t be an excuse to not contribute. Don’t disrespect your classmates! 90% of the time, groups will be asked to present the results of their interviews or research in front, so do your best to listen and pay attention. At the very least, don’t look bored or obviously scroll through social media while they’re in front because this can be very discouraging for those who are reporting.

YL5 Module Guides LEADERSHIP & COACHING 1 unit | Whole year
Module Description Something that makes ASMPH unique is its inclusion of Leadership sessions in its curriculum. These classes contribute to fulfilling the school’s vision of creating doctor-leaders. From these sessions, you can expect lots of self-reflection, personality tests, and reflection papers—all to help you get to know yourself better. Along with the Leadership classes are the coaching/mentoring sessions. Each student is assigned a coach that are there to help them with any concerns they might have. Get to know your coach and don’t be afraid to open up to them! Anything that is said between you and your coach is strictly confidential, so you can talk to them about academics, personal life, family life, and they will do their best to guide you!
ETHICS 1 unit | Whole year
Module Description There will be multiple ethics classes spread out throughout the year. Just like leadership classes, the lessons we learn in ethics class will contribute to fulfilling the school’s vision of creating doctorleaders.

TYPES OF SESSIONS Classroom Learning Most classes will be traditional classroom learning where the lecturer is in front. Sometimes they may have the students prepare for a flipped classroom discussion, where the students will teach the topic for the day with the lecturer present to give corrections.
Clinical Preceptorials These are sessions wherein you will get to interact with actual patients. Each group will have a preceptor who will demonstrate how to perform the physical examination on the patient, and then the students are expected to perform it on the patient afterwards. These are usually held in preparation for an OSCE or physical exam. Last year, we had clinical preceptorials to prepare for the GI and Neuro OSCE.
Team Based Learning (TBL) TBLs allow you to analyze questions and cases by groups, where you can talk it out with your groupmates to rationalize what the correct answer is. Usually, it is set up so that there will be an individual test to check your knowledge on the topic, and then the group activity follows immediately.
26
Laboratory Dissection Located on the 4th floor, the Anatomy lab is where the cadavers are kept and where you will proceed each time there is a scheduled dissection. The batch will be split into groups, depending on the number of cadavers (for us, there were 12 groups). These people will be your anatomates and TBL groupmates for the whole school year!
Histology Laboratory Located in the rooms on the 3rd floor, the Histo labs are where you’ll be able to examine slides under the microscope. Each student will get his/her own slidebox and microscope that will be checked at the end of the year so take good care of them!
Small Group Discussions (SGD) SGDs are graded discussions about a topic decided by the module coordinator. A case, along with guide questions, will usually be given in the days leading up to the SGD so that you’re given ample time to prepare. The case and guide questions will be discussed by the students in the presence of a faculty preceptor. Grading is based on how much you participate, so make sure to study well!
SHOPPING LIST Books
TIPS You don’t need to buy all the books!
Get pdfs online and use your laptops to read.
Many use their iPads to read books. But if your eyes are a bit sensitive you can always opt for photocopies.
Med school is expensive, try to determine what is a must by versus a luxury.
Earlier editions aren’t bad for anatomy subjects but beware of older editions for other books. Medicine can change really quickly.

ASMPH LIFE Student Wellness
WHAT TO DO First things first, we all know that entering medical school is no joke. And so, we have to prepare both our minds and bodies for everything we are about to experience. But, how do we really prepare without knowing what we are preparing for?
EAT While McDonald’s is always a top choice whenever you want to eat, it also shouldn’t be your only answer! ASMPH is surrounded by different restaurants that can help you start a healthy diet right away! We have Go Salads in The Medical City, Subway in Rockwell, and our cafeteria actually serves a variety of healthy food choices!
Well, the key is to just do everything in our power to empower our minds and bodies. This includes doing selfcare activities that we enjoy and reading a few things in advance. May it be watching korean dramas, or going to the gym to get those gains, we suggest that you go for it before the official start of the semester! Also, try to read up on your past notes or books about Biochemistry, Physiology and Anatomy, but it’s super not necessary to hard core read those! Just try to familiarize yourself with the basic terms; it’s really gonna come in handy once your Cell Module starts.
Once the semester officially starts, don’t forget to still allot time for the things that make you happy. Send your Mom a text, still go to the gym, meet up with non-med friends during weekends, watch your favorite Netflix series during your free time in school, and just let your mind breathe some fresh air, okay? You’d have enough time to study for everything else when your mind and body is ready for it.
We do encourage you to eat healthy, but of course, treating yourself with that Frappucino or your favorite chips in class is also okay. Don’t forget to drink lots of water! We have an unlimited supply of cold (and hot) water in school so make sure your drink at least 8 glasses a day. Dehydration could leave you drained even after just an hour of class, so bring your favorite tumblers and drink up, freshies!

Student Wellness
STAYING HEALTHY DESTRESS Many people have different ways to destress. Some students sleep in the library (even during class!), some go to the gym after class, some eat out to their favorite resto on weekends, some parties with friends at night, and some snuggles into bed with a big tub of ice cream. It’s up to you how you would destress, what’s important is that YOU MAKE TIME FOR IT!
32
We know that the list of transes to study for the exams every week will be overwhelming all the time, but a few minutes of walking outside, or an hour watching a good movie would do no harm as long as we manage our time wisely. Make time for whatever makes your soul feel good, and then finish what needs to be done.
Good options for staying healthy definitely include joining one or more (depending on what you want and can handle) sports teams in ASMPH. Going to the gym by yourself or with friends is another option. Staying healthy also includes eating well and sleeping well. Also, make sure that you balance study time with your hobbies to destress.

LIBRARY The library offers a haven for those who need the quiet to study or even to nap. The whole library spans two floors! 5TH FLOOR The 5th floor will be your home for the whole year, and believe us, it’s really one of the best classrooms in ASMPH. It has lots of spaces to sleep in (you’ll find your spot within the year for sure!), three projectors that really help you follow the lecture wherever you may be seated, and of course, an air conditioning system that will either freeze your hands or freeze your face. Make sure to bring your jackets every day in school, and just make yourself comfy inside the 5th floor lecture hall! Studying can be really fun during lectures when you feel at ease in your seats.

ANATOMY LABORATORY
HISTOLOGY LABORATORY
The Anatomy Laboratory is located at the 4th floor by the elevator. It is where students learn to dissect cadavers and learn Anatomy from their own eyes. The whole batch will be divided into 12 groups, with 13 to 15 members each.
The Histo laboratories are located in the 3rd floor. There are 5 histology laboratories, one of which is the biggest one beside the elevator, and the whole batch is divided into these 5 rooms alphabetically. All students will have his or her own lockers containing their microscopes and slide set. Same with Anatomy lab, you will be given a manual which will contain what specimen and structures needs to be seen during class hours.
Some students take shifts in order to let everyone experience dissecting their cadavers. Students usually have the whole morning or afternoon for Anatomy lab after their lecture, and we are given an Anatomy Manual that contains procedures on how to dissect the cadaver based on what system needs to be learned for the day. Don’t forget to listen your professors before dissecting! Also, it is the only place where you can sport your favorite scrub attires! ASMPH is not strict with what scrubs you want to wear, just as long as you wear it only during Anatomy Lab time and not on lectures.
Histo lab time usually takes up 2 to 4 hours and we suggest you make use of that time, especially if the professor announces that the Histology exam will be a moving exam! ASMPH is one of the medical schools which has a 1:1 ratio in microscopes/ slide set per student, and it really helps students enjoy Histology more for the rest of the year!
CAFETERIA The Cafeteria at the end of Ching Tan Lobby is the home of various establishments that help keep the belly of medical students full! May it be a quick run to the caf during class, or another quick run for breakfast before class, the cafeteria can serve you with delicious food and coffee from Zekaf, Kapedad, and many more! The Red Brick Area in front of the Cafeteria is where some food stalls, like Chicks-to-go, Starr’s, and Chick’s Rule, are put up as fundraisers of student organizations so food choices is not always limited to what’s in the Cafeteria.
