Crowborough charity hits new record for Covid Emergency Fund
World in Need (WIN) is a passionate team of local part-time paid staff and volunteers who serve the needs of 13 centres in 10 countries in Africa and Asia. It hopes to hit £100,000 in Covid support after a phenomenally generous response by local supporters.

“We’re overwhelmed by public response to the needs of our centres, who are all in desperate situations as a result of covid,” says CEO Rob Holmes. “We impact the lives of thousands of children and families in the most desperate of situations every month and it’s absolutely amazing and all down to the good hearts of local people, that in just a few months we’ve already raised over £45,000. And the number keeps rising. We really can’t thank donors enough, and we’re very optimistic about hitting targets and helping even more communities in need.” With no other source of income except donations and child sponsorship, WIN has been able to send additional funds to buy life-saving food and medical supplies for their projects. Funds also support specific church and community initiatives across the 13 centres, including access to fresh water, food provision, and the sponsorship of more than 350 children, who are rescued from a life of desperate poverty and squalid conditions. “These young people are given hope for the future with education, along with hot food, medical care and safe housing,” Rob explains. “And this fund is helping us go further than ever before to support and make a difference. We feel it’s important for our local community to know there is positive news through this intensely difficult time, and that the support they are giving is quite literally changing, and saving lives. We really wanted to say thank you for putting us on target and making all this happen.” Hope can arrive in many different shapes. At the children’s home in the Punjab in India, a WIN corporate sponsor provided funds for a new buffalo, desperately needed to provide good nourishing dairy products. In N. Uganda, private and corporate donors combined to raise funds for a new water well, providing water for domestic use and for irrigation of local farmland that is worked on by the young men that have been educated through WIN child sponsorship. World in Need are currently running a campaign to increase child sponsorship, this is being carried out both locally and nationally with the help of a team of existing and new volunteers, co-ordinated by our Child Sponsorship Manager.

FOREST ROW: HUGO’S MEMORIAL
In 2019, following the presumed drowning of our nephew, we decided to try and get Forest Row Skate Park extended in his memory. Hugo Palmer (20) and his best friend (both Forest Row locals) were on a backpacking trip in Australia when they disappeared from the beach.
Nearly 2 years down the line, we have good news and bad about the progress of Hugo’s memorial. To start with the good news - we officially have planning permission! It's been a long and expensive journey to get there, but we finally have it. Unfortunately, though, we are now facing a big financial challenge to get this extension built. The original skate park building firm who quoted £30K (which we managed to raise) are no longer able to be involved. This has been a huge blow at the 11th hour, to put it lightly. The company who we are now speaking to have crunched the numbers, and are saying that in order to build the design we have, it'll be more like £50K. Which leaves us £20K short. And trying to set about raising a sum of money like that during a global pandemic/recession, is no mean feat. We are exploring potential grants (lottery, etc.), but have already had a couple of applications declined as certain grants are now being allocated to Covid-related efforts. The company we are speaking to have said that they could build a pretty small extension for the £30K that we have, but it would be disappointing (for everyone concerned) for it not to be the very best extension that it can be. The more expensive quote includes full repairs and resurfacing of the existing park, which would mean a clean, fresh slate and an exciting new space to enjoy. It's a tough one. We are down, but not defeated. We’re determined to build Hugo's memorial, but also to extend and expand this wonderful amenity in our village, that will benefit so many people for generations to come.
