Much of the forest’s gorse is of a similar age and needs management to create variety to support more wildlife. Rotational gorse management will produce young, developing and mature plants without domination of whole areas.

This winter will therefore see the start of gorse management on the forest with seven hectares being cleared near Gill’s Lap car park. Machinery will be used to clear the plant before it is chipped and used to produce greener electricity. The use of the arisings as fuel will reduce some of the costs of management. We will make sure that there is signage in place to inform visitors and, as the area recovers after the works, views will be opened up and heather will be able to mix with the gorse in these areas once again. 1.
