Dispersal Design architecture firm design Lubbock, TX

This proposal was the result of a comprehensive studio that asked students to synthesize the education from undergraduate education in programming, design, construction, and systems. The resulting design was for a mid-sized architectural office in the arts district of Lubbock, Texas.

note: This architect’s office was the result of examination of the socioeconomic and cultural needs of the Llano Estacado geographic region, proposing a ‘fleet’ of design professionals that could migrate amongst the remote locations of the region while returning to the office headquarters in Lubbock. The tripartite campus design showed respect to the local agri-industrial dynamic while creating a cohesive addition to the arts district.

110 people move to the Austin area every day.

Summary: Although specific data is contested, demographers estimate 80-150 move to the five central counties of Texas, most of which are served by the Austin metro area. This statistic is a net total, calcluating the number of people arriving and leaving. Of this ‘rounded’ number, 40-60% of the 110 are expected to move within the confines of Travis County. -W. FACT:

Austin is the live music capital of the world.

There are numerous resources for aspiring musicians in Austin.

Austin is expected to grow exponentially by 2030.

CLAIM:

Summary: Besides playing host to SXSW and Austin City Limits, Austin claims the title of ‘Live Music Capital of the World’ for having more music venues per capita than anywhere else in the United States. Additionally, Austin hosts nearly 1,900 musical artists living in the Austin metro area. Residents and visitors can experience a wide range of music at over 200 live music venues spread acrossthe city.

13

CLAIM:

The City of Austin alone sponsors a dozen different organizations and resources to support the efforts of musicians trying to hone their sound in ATX. Among these are the Austin Music Foundation, the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, Texas Music Office, and Austin Music People.

This design solution operates under the directive of urban “seams. The acculturation experience revealed the Italian commitment to workmanship in the famous fields of Italian stone and fashion. The excellence of craft in both is shown in how they are joined, or the seams.

Piazza Dogana Verona, ITA Students were asked to analyze the current site through facade studies, diagramming, and ultimately developing an urban strategy diagram, mapping out the vital information that would inform the decisions made in the design process. This final urban strategy diagram identified the “grain” of the urban fabric and showed where the site required information in order to be stitched back together. The resultant design provided a continuous and open piazza for public use. Previously independent zones were stitched together and materials used to reinforce the seams inbetween.

TTU CoA Lobby Design Competition Students were invited to participate in a design competition for a new welcome desk on the first floor. This proposal expands the scope of a mere desk by suggesting a comprehensive welcome center. The modular design allows for infinite combinations to reflect and enhance the dynamic culture of design education. This entry features five discrete elements: the reception desk, lobby seating, display partition, collaborative workspace, and exhibition boards. These components would allow for flexible use of the lobby space for lectures, exhibits, or even if the entry patterns change over time.

Study Abroad Center Marfa, TX

This project proposes a hybrid study abroad center and satellite campus for Texas Tech University in the city in Marfa. The project seeks to reconcile the demographics of Texas students and residents of Marfa while presenting an opportunity for sustainable and diverse growth. The MESA (Marfa center for Education, Skills, and Apprenticeship) seeks to allow diverse avenues of education, including a workshop and proximity for service based learning, short and mid-term housing for staggered instructional tracks, and an opportunity for a year-long residency program.

The design solution suggests three conditioned spaces, a small unconditioned gatehouse, and central courtyard space. One structure hosts learning spaces on the ground level with accommodations for 24 short term and 16 mid-term students above. The central structure hosts services such as eating, preparation, and workshops.

Intervention Students were asked to design, construct, and test a structural assembly intended for human occupation and display within a courtyard space. This project sought to reconcile the two vertical levels of the bridge and courtyard by providing places of pause: a bench and a work surface. The course demanded a comprehensive consideration of loads and supports for the project. Therefore, the need for solid materials and sturdy connections was vital. The project successfully withstood use for eight weeks and effectively integrated students in the courtyard space during the review session.

Surface Study Two dimensional geometries were folded to create a three dimensional solid: a truncated tetrahedron. This volume was then altered through a series of operations: clustering, subtraction, modulation, and finally a comprehensive assembly. This final “chain of volumes interacted with a regular rectilinear solid to study the negative and positive impressions left by the imprint. The final model creates a dialogue of tension and compression: tension is shown in the stretched form of the tessellations, while the indentations left on the volume suggest a visually heavy action.

Independent Study Texas State Parks This independent research sequence seeks to review, research, and reconcile America’s collective impact on built environment with similar design solutions today. The New Deal and dust bowl/ depression of American History presented the nation with an unprecedented intimacy with the way the land and buildings were formed. The aim of this independent research is to renew appreciation for efforts of the CCC by researching documentation, diagramming and drafting site changes, and modeling structures through hands on and traditional architectural means.
