Why does one's mindset have a profound effect and impact on aging? The truth is that every single one of us will age and there is no way to go around this. It is the way of life. We can slow it down though. Important to note is that there are ways to reverse the aging effects. The nutrition and fitness ways are almost common knowledge. They can reverse aging effects. But did you know that your mind can also have the same effects? Yes. Your mind has enough power over your body to affect the physical body. The attitude you have towards ageing will have a huge impact over the physical health of the body whether it be positive or negative. Previous studies have showed that having negative influences has resulted in negative outcomes of physical functioning. Dr. Ellen Langer is recognized for having a major contribution to this issue and in her text, counterclockwise, it is apparent that many of our physical health issues are affected by our mindset. It is possible for one to reverse the effects of ageing and it is only now that mainstream medicine is catching up. A large part of the population still has not recognized the power that they have in their mind. Much of what we say to ourselves if not all has an effect on our physical body. Our words have an effect on us and our words have a lot of power. If we chose to believe these words, they will really have an effect on us. The words we confess translate into our thoughts and later into our bodies bringing life to the saying, “confession is possession. Research has revealed that how people feel inside as well as their expectations of their capabilities can have a profound effect on happiness, health, and even longevity, even more than the date given on the birth certificate. Ellen Langer conducted a research where a group of men who depended on their family to do things for them and when they were placed in an environment taking

their mind to 20 years ago, and told to behave like they were 20 years younger and to think like so too. At the end of the experiment, outside observers judging using photos taken before the retreat found that they showed better flexibility, dexterity and looked much younger. The conclusion was that because people believe that when they age, they will fall apart, it happened that they did. The goal of this reasoning is not to get the older people to think that they are young, rather it is for them to change their mindset concerning what it means to their bodies for them to be older, because for one to be older, it does not mean that they will decay, according to Ms. Langer. Taking memory as an example, when thirty-year olds forget the many things that they do, they do not blame medical conditions like dementia associated with old age. Older people automatically jump to the conclusion that their memory will fail as an inevitability of old age.
