We live in a world where it is increasingly hard to discern whether a space is public or private. Many people now would consider a mall or a Starbucks to be ‘public’; a space for gathering, socialization and activity, just as much as they would parkland. Companies are complicit in this trend; investing in services and spaces for public interaction in all their architecture. While publicly accessible, these spaces are ultimately designed and controlled by corporations, with corporate designers dictating the style, activities and even the users of their spaces. In absolute contrast to the overbreeding control of corporatized ‘public’ space, is the digital forum. A phenomenal space where members of the public can freely post what they think, want and exchange ideas in an ever-evolving digital environment. ‘A Cloud Society’ questions whether it is possible to materialize this phenomenon in the physical realm. To create a free and evolving public interface within a corporate environment.

Welcome to the brand new world of “Anchor Cloud’! Imagine having access to a forum, in which the users can browse and vote for what type of space they prefer to stay in, and what activities they are interested to participate.

Closely or remotely, this live stream network will be analyzed by the cloud processor and projected onto the building form, resulting in a constantly updated building outline which symbolizes the free and fluid public interest.
Once enters the lobby, one will be exposed to the internal fabric structures, dropping from the ceiling and changing their forms and boundaries to accommodate diverse programs.
As a user, one can decide the events and schedules within the building, anytime, from any device connected to the cloud. A user’s vote and preference will directly affect what is going on in the cloud.
For example, if a person would like to have a taste of anchor craft beer produced on site. After receiving the request, the internal structure will rearrange so that the user gets access to a bar.
It is a new perspective, a possibility that the brand is not dictating what to provide to its users. Instead, it stands back and merges with today’s expanding digital society, mediating between the interests of the corporation and the public. This will be a brand new world.

TRANSPOSING DIGITAL NETWORKS The Cloud uses online networks in order to gather information on what activities people want to do locally. The most desired activities will be accommodated into the building. In doing so, trending activities in digital networks are transposed into the physical realm.

BIRD LIBRARY RENOVATION 04

The Bird Library renovation project was a speculative redesign of an existing Syracuse campus library. The original structure was designed by King & King architects in the 1950’s, and was suffering from outdated and dilapidated facilities. Additionally, the building had become notorious for its dark, dingy interiors and its starck brutalist facade. The renovation made use of the library’s existing structure, whilst extensively reformatting its internal layout. The monolithic mass of the building was splintered into 3 distinct fragments, held together by an expansive atrium. Each fragment houses different programs. The western fragment is the largest of the 3 and contains the book stacks within a dark, enclosed environment. The eastern fragment was converted into a computer lab, with a freeplan to let in more light. Lastly, the southern fragment was transformed entirely into an iconic truss caged structure that houses the library’s special collections.

The theme for the 2015 FAV competition was ‘time’, and several teams from Syracuse University were tasked to design a pavilion within a courtyard in Montpellier, that resonated with that theme. Our team chose to focus on how time erodes and decays architecture, influencing us to design a pavilion that exhibits how our courtyard had decayed since its construction in 1878. The ‘Dis-Figure’ pavilion consisted of an array of latex sheets, grafted onto a self supporting timber frame. While the frame was designed to loosely reflect the gothic vaulting of the surrounding courtyard, the main attraction of the pavilion are the latex sheets. Each sheet would be textured from the surrounding courtyard’s dirt and pollutants. Therefore, by hanging them on the frame, the pavilion would showcase how time has eroded and decayed the surrounding courtyard.

Holborn is a densely developed district in central London. While thriving as a business hub, the district has small patches of affordable housing, with low income communities living in dense social housing blocks, only accessible from small alleyways. These low income communities often commute out of holborn to access public facilities as holborn is both too dense and privately dominated to offer decent public amenities. The project, Holborn Hub, attempts to forcibly insert a massive public amenity centre within the dense fabric of Holborn. By implementing an elevated concourse, the project aims to both link together existing site features such as hospitals, housing and parks, and also create new amenities like public libraries and theatres for local residents. In doing so, the backstreets of holborn would be transformed from a hidden derelict neighbourhood, to a thriving social hub.

The concept derived from an investigation into optimised structural design and contemporary fabrication. I was in awe of how 3d printers fabricated highly articulated branching structures to support unstable prints while using the minimal possible print material to do so. This made me question whether the same branching structures could be developed into larger, structural members at an architectural scale. The branching chair is an attempt to explore how mathematically derived branching supports can create structurally optimised architectural systems, capable of supporting unevenly distributed loads along non linear planes. The project aims to illustrate both the practical applications, as well as the unique aesthetic of branching structures as an architectural system.

An exhibition computer case design for AMD to showcase their new R9 Nano GPU. While the internal hardware was supplied, the entire computer housing had to be designed, fabricated and assembled from scratch. The final build consisted of an organic frame, with voronoi openings to vent excess heat from the Nano, whilst showcasing the card inside. The exterior chassis was 3d printed and the interior frame was CNC milled out of black acetal. The build won both ‘mod of the month’ and ‘mod of the year’ on popular computer case design website ‘Bit Tech’ and was also featured in the December 2016 issue of CustomPC Magazine.
