The rise of dementia remains one of the most significant and growing public health concern within Australia (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2022). Although dementia is often associated with older age groups, there is also a growing number of people experiencing the onset of dementia at an earlier age. Research has shown that apart from well-known risk factors such as age and genetics, lifestyle-related risk factors such as physical inactivity and mental illnesses are also often associated with the development of dementia (Alzheimer’s Society UK, 2021).

The town of Broadford sits within the Shire of Mitchell in Regional Victoria where it is estimated to have the highest annual growth rate of dementia in Victoria (Dementia Australia, 2017). The township’s inactiveness and its significance in mental illness pose a huge lifestyle-related risk factor in the development of cognitive impairment within the community.

This thesis does not seek to resolve the issues revolving around dementia or early onset dementia but to instigate a more active lifestyle within the community in delaying this condition.

The Broadford pub seeks to expand its historical role as a holistic community care centre particularly with regard to assisting in delaying the onset of dementia in young people within this rural town – by incorporating history, restoring community and reconnection with nature through designing for movement in architecture.

Taxi? Serveece 2.0

Subject: Masters Design Studio “E”

Studio Leader: Marijke Davey

Year: 2022

Program: Taxi Rank

Project Type: Individual Work

On March 16th, 2022, Jennifer, from the Palestinian Fair Trade Organisation told me a story of her journey and experience of how she was stopped at one of the northern border checkpoints in occupied West Bank. She was prohibitted to bring in a package of Nabulsi Soap from Nablus into Nazareth, a town in the State of Israel. As she was attempting to carry this package for export to Australia, she had to temporarily store it at one of the nearest petrol stations in Jenin before crossing into Israel and returning to collect it back. She travelled in a well-known public transport commonly used in the West Bank called a Share Taxi, or Service (Serveece).

The share taxi system (Serveece) is a mode of transportation commonly used by both locals and travellers travelling within occupied West Bank. Many passengers rely on these share taxis to get around different towns while also using them as a form of a courier to carry parcels between different towns. Not knowing whether these parcels could enter the state of Israel, these share taxi drivers work hand in hand with local petrol station owners through an “act of trust” as a hub for temporary storage or as a pit stop during a commute.

While existing car park spaces often serve as the main hubs for share taxi drivers to gather and pick up their passengers, these spaces do not have the right amenities and facilities to accommodate the day to day activities on site.

This proposal does not seek to resolve the issues within the share taxi industry but as an intervention to revitalize the existing conditions of these share taxi interchanges. The project focuses on the major share taxi rank located in Ramallah. Celebrating the share taxi rank as a key public space for transit and gathering within the community in occupied West Bank.

The Fitzroy Art Gallery

Subject: Masters Design Studio “D”

Studio Leader: Anna Nervegna

Year: 2021

Program: Art Gallery

Project Type: Individual Work

The suburb of Fitzroy is no stranger to the concept of art and culture, priding itself as one of the trendiest suburbs within the inner fringe of metropolitan Melbourne.

The site is located between the corners of Gertrude and Smith Street, where heritage meets retail and culture. With a large community showing their appreciation for contemporary arts through various programs, the street’s vibrancy allows a new landmark featuring an art gallery to represent these traits within the heart of Fitzroy.

The proposal explores the idea of subtraction to understand how voids and spaces can be created and perceived within a solid form. The void, being unknown, can be perceived through multiple perspectives by each individual. Similarly, a viewer’s perception towards art can also be perceived differently based on their personal experiences, cultural and heritage backgrounds.

Through subtraction, the abstract form of the Fitzroy Art Gallery seeks to celebrate a distinctive identity that reflects the versatile and experimental character of the suburb as a result of its urban transformation over the years.

The Fitzroy Art Gallery also draws inspiration from Cathy Lu, a sculpturist whose work explores the relationship between her cultural history and contemporary identity. Encouraging the cultural and artistic diversity within Fitzroy, uniting any contrasting cultures, backgrounds and beliefs as one, similar to how art unites society.

Form Finding

Extrude | Solid

The solid form being extruded demonstrates the suburb’s dense and rich history intermingled with the existence of different cultural backgrounds.

Subtract | Void

The void formulated from this subtraction relates back to the unknown whereby it can be perceived different through multiple perspectives and lenses from different individuals

Connectivity | Perception, Art, Culture

Circulation ramps are introduced to provide a seamless connection between floor levels where different art gallery programs are spatially stacked. The circulatory ramps enable viewers to view the artworks seamlessly as they progress from the ground floor to the 3rd floor, creating a smoother narration on the artistic expression of the artworks upon entering the art gallery space.

Spatial Stacking | Reflection

The final form which posess an abstract look reflects the versatile and experimental character of the suburb as a result of its urban transformation over the years.

The Foundry 4.0

Subject: Masters Design Studio “C”

Studio Leader: Yui Uchimura

Year: 2021

Program: Workshop, Residential Project Type: Individual Work

The craft of kitchen knife making is an art which has survived and thrived over time and practiced across the world. This craftsmanship has been carried down through history and is represented distinctively in different regions.

The site is located in Daylesford, one of the main regional culinary areas in Victoria. With a large Swiss – Italian community residing there, the town’s rich culinary and art culture allows the craft of kitchen knife making to thrive.

The proposal seeks to encourage the community to become more aware, involved and to recognise the significant role this craft is playing in the development of the culinary landscape of Daylesford. Creating a retreat where craft and creativity are able to take place – The Foundry.

The Foundry aims to celebrate fire as the key element in the process of kitchen knife making while also embracing fire as a natural element, contributing to the ritual of rebirth, revitalisation and repurpose, by serving and bringing the community together in the practice of the craft.

With fire being the central form of the retreat, The Foundry focuses on the theatrics of the craft, heightening all senses required in the art of Kitchen Knife Making.

Melbourne 215 5.0

Subject:

Applied Architectural Technology

Studio Leader: Mark Lam

Year: 2021

Program: High Rise Multipurpose Building

Project Type: Group Work

Melbourne 215 is located at the corner of Spring Street and Lonsdale Street. As the site is strategically located at the fringe of the Hoddle Grid in the CBD, the site has access to public transportation via the Metro at Parliament station and Route 86, 96 trams. The overarching concept of the proposed tower is to provide an iconic yet distinct mixed- used tower within the heart of the Central Business District, attracting people to live, work and play within the space. The tower capitalises on its strategic location to engage with the external street context while also maximising on the Eastern and Northern views overlooking the natural landscape of the Parliament House and Carlton Gardens.

The tower width is optimised to comply within the setback requirements and pedestrian circulation along Lonsdale, Spring and Little Bourke Street. The architectural height and separation between the tower and adjacent tall buildings at north have been maximised to prevent overshadowing. By using the stacking strategy, programmes including retail, office and hotel zone are stacked up according to their view and circulation. The Ground Floor and Upper Ground Floor Podium houses the retail outlets, Offices which are divided into low rise and mid- rise floors occupy the following floors above the Podium. The sky lobby occupies the upper 2 levels with hotels above it. The penthouse Luxury suites would occupy the highest two

levels with the crown housing the necessary services and equipment for the BMU.

A two way lift lobby approach is implemented to facilitate improved circulation between play and work, catering to both office staff and hotel guest coming from different entrances. The double loaded lift lobby also enhances the efficiency and effectiveness in zoning control on different levels. The core is shaped to be as square as possible to maximise floor plate efficiency and leasing depth. Toilets and other amenities are organised beside the core as part of the consideration for MEP planning and sewage pipe arrangement which will be gathered in the same service shaft to the legal point of discharge of the building. The back of house area is located on the western side of the core as it is the least valuable area of orientation. This includes two goods lift, the west fire staircase, a mechanical / store room.

ELIZABETH BLACKBURN SCHOOL OF SCIENCES

Subject: Construction Design Studio Leader: Yi Lobachevsky Year: 2018

Program: Educational Building Project Type: Individual Work

The aim for this subject was to understand the construction of commercial buildings. In this case, the Elizabeth Blackburn School of Sciences was used as a precedent for us to study and understand the construction methods used to construct the building. A 1:20 scale axonometric drawing of a section of the building following a 1:20 scale model was undertaken to compare the building’s design intent along with its construction limitations when it was being built.

Work Experience 7.0

Studio: Harmer Architecture

Year: 2020

Program: Educational Building

Project Type: Group Work

Throughout the year 2020, I worked on a sizeable fitout project in the upgrade of the Neighbourhood Justice Centre (NJC) in Wellington Street, Collingwood. This was the first stage of the major upgrade works to the building. Over the course of the project, I worked closely with the director of the firm Philip Harmer and the project architect, Daniel Bright. I was involved throughout the design development stage up to the defects liability period for the first stage. Thus allowing me to be exposed to the fundamentals of contract documentation, client & builder liasing and assisting the project architect during Contract Administration.
