Midwest Modern - ICFF 2017
Exhibition Booth Design + Fabrication
ICFF Editors Award - Best Design School
Section 001-2017 was a multidisciplinary studio of 20 industrial design and 4 architecture students from undergraduate and graduate backgrounds. Exploring an array of design histories from midcentury modern, Shaker furniture, Scandinavian and contemporary Japanese, as well as the idea of the live/work environment the studio created a furniture house to define a Midwestern modern style. Pulling from these traditions the furniture explores different materials and processes linked together by form, material and color taking into account the ideas of production/manfacturability and the principles of good design (form, contrast, balance, unity, etc). We designed the furniture to live in the Master of Design studio space at DAAP and to be shown at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City. The booth won a 2017 ICFF Editor’s Award for “Best Design School” as mentioned in Metropolis and Dezeen

MetroLAB | B.U.S Proposals Cincinnati, OH
Proposed Sites
B.US was a studio design competition that called for a series of bus stops that served inner city and lower income neighborhoods in need of safer spaces that engaged the local youth population. The studio was funded and sponsored by Cincinnati Public Schools seeking to improve the existing locations for elementary and high school. My first round proposal utilized a self written grasshopper script to develop a patterned screen wall affixed to columns supporting a canopy overhead. The wall is flanked by electronic signange to be used for arrival information and local advertising. This preliminary design was selected to move forward and was developed further in the next round of selection.

Base Panel Unit | Bent Sheet Metal
MetroLAB | B.U.S Proposals Cincinnati, OH
After earning a bid in the first round of proposals the design evolved further exploring more capabilities with scripting and material studies. The shelter then included the use a multi faceted geometric unit made of perforated bent sheet metal. The units design allows for arrangment in varying orientations which create a unique skin cladding the walls of the shelter. Each panel can be made to order with custom finishes created by local artists engaging the local community in the creation of it’s shelters unique identity. The fabricated panel uses a simple method of clip in installation allowing for modular configurations that might be best suited at a given site. Within the shelter exists a variety multi height seating made of precast concrete forms topped by wood surfaces. This proposal earned a bid in the final round the design competition.

MetroLAB | Final Build
University of Cincinnati - DAAP The MetroLAB studio concluded with the production of a full size build of the final design proposal which celebrated UC’s 200 year bicentenial event and highlighted the collabortation between UC design and Cincinnati Public Schools. The final design incorporated an exterior envelope fabricated from pre cut CNC milled member tied to one another using a system of threaded steel rod at anchor points. Seating was created using arrayed patterns of shapes which offer various arrangements of seating at different heights. Local sponsors and branding are highlighted on transparent acryllic signage at the core of the shelters back wall. Recessed lighting powered by solar energy is hidden in channels throughout the overhead structure. The pavillion was on display and open to the public over the summer during the bicentennial celebration event.

1662 Hoffner St - Cincinnati, OH PAR-Projects is a non-profit, fine arts organization based in the culturally diverse neighborhood of Northside, Cincinnati. The organization provides educational oppurtunities through workshops & classes related to graphic design & career development with a mission to help empower community in the art. Working in collaboration with PAR-Projects, I was asked to interrogate teh nexus between art and architecture by “hacking” or “modding” a series of conventional shipping containers to produce interactions and effects not considered in the scope of the containers original design. The studio, in conjunction with working to assess need and offer design solutions that address and expands on the programming of the institution, also looked at the status of contemporary architectural representation and its capacity to be valued, analyzed and discussed as art. Located at 1662 Hoffner St, I presented a multi-phase program that provides traditional education settings, gallery art spaces as well as community gathering and entertainment facilities. This work was publicly presented at Gallery Askew as a part of the show PAR-PROJECTS: UNCONTAINED

Fabrication | Tectonics Undergraduate Studio
This studio introduced students to tectonic systems and explored structure through different modes of fabrication. This project examined the integrity of a skeletal framing system and tested the capabilities of 3D printing. Through a series of studies I developed a complex structure using a 3D Rhino model. The sculptural framework aimed to reflect the form a stingray’s body in movement. The physical model was produced using a powder coat 3D printer.

High Rise Luxury Residential Tower Handel Architects | New York, NY
During my internship with Handel Architects in New York City I was appointed to a team working on a new 850’ luxury residential development in Manhattan. I assisted this team with a wide range of work on major marketing presentations as well construction documents on major deadlines including the projects 100% CD submission.
Exterior Model + Site Context | 3D Print
Personal contributions included an large scale 3D printed site model. The 2’ tall exterior model included the new residential tower and basic massing of the neighboring structures which correspond to the surrounding city block. Additionally, I was asked to fabricate the courtyard and screenwall at ground level as well as the entrance gallery within. Each component was first modeled in Rhino, then sent to the 3D printer individually before being assembled and prepped for transportation. Finally the model was set into a basswood frame for a seamless final look.

When Hurricane Sandy hit in October 2012, the City of New York suffered devastation of historic measures caused by a crippling storm surge that left a $19 billion dollar footprint in its wake. The burdens of this disaster were felt especially by 80,000 residents of 33 NYCHA developments that were dibilitated by the impact of the storm. The magnitude of Sandy’s carnage prompted a $3 billion grant in federal funding dedicated to restoring essential services to the residents of NYCHA housing developments who were left stranded without basic utilities like as heat, electricity and clean water.

Nelligan White Architects | New York, NY
During my co-op at Nelligan White Architects, I was assigned to the Baruch Houses project team. This team was developing a design for the new Central Heating Plant that will replace an existing structure, protect crucial utilities that heat the 18 structures at Baruch Houses and comply with new post-Sandy building design requirements. Our team also developed designs for electrical MEP buildings introuduced on site and emergency flood mitigation systems.

Personal contributions I made to this project included an extensive amount of digital modeling work in Rhino, while I also was involved in the creation of renderings, construction documents and site surveys.
