The story of our 2023/24 season is one of community and creativity. We pursued new artistic terrain with unique voices and you came with us. You embraced full-length classics in record numbers. You provided multiple opportunities for our dancers and musicians to demonstrate their exceptional talents and evolve their artistry. With joy, we welcomed first-time attendees and engaged students in our community to promote the arts as a dynamic form of self-expression.
None of this would be possible without you. At every opportunity, you gave generously and engaged with peers and artists to share your love for dance. Such is the power of our art form to connect us in deep and lasting ways.
As a community, your support means more than ever as we navigate a complex financial landscape.
Hope Muir
Joan and Jerry Lozinski Artistic Director
Despite the multifaceted pressures all cultural institutions are facing, you ensured that we achieved our goals with a modest deficit of $423, 000. This anticipated result reflects our strategic choices to prioritize our mission and sustain our people – the artists, dancers, choreographers and creators who make our work possible.
This report is a reflection of your belief in the transformative power of ballet and your impact on our company in 2023/24. You allow us to be bold, to push the boundaries of what ballet can be and to carry forward a legacy of beauty, discipline and innovation.
Thank you for the countless ways you uplift and inspire us year after year.
Amanda Ram Interim Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer
Raghunath Davloor Chair, Board of Directors
logo_ballet puts dancers first
Hope Muir created opportunities for the full roster in 2023/24, from the artists who rose to the challenges of John Cranko’s Onegin to those debuting in Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Two world premieres brought creative energy to the company, and we invited more guest artists than ever before to share their expertise in our studios, including Charles Jude, Sofiane Sylve, Laurent Novis and Lynne Charles. We also appointed Canada’s Ethan Colangelo as our newest Choreographic Associate and presented a new work by Toronto’s Alyssa Martin at the MAD HOT BALLET Gala. We were proud to invest in our dancers with such an impressive roster of teachers, creators and collaborators. Throughout the season, all 73 dancers accessed our onsite Dancer Health and Wellness Programme to support mental and physical wellbeing.
In Practice
• Hope Muir promotes Tirion Law to Principal Dancer onstage, followed by Hannah Galway to First Soloist and Emerson Dayton, Keaton Leier and Isaac Wright to Second Soloist
• Our first dancer exchange with Birmingham Royal Ballet sees two dancers from each company performing with the other
• Principal Dancer Guillaume Côté performs his final Onegin partnering Principal Dancer Jurgita Dronina in her debut as Tatiana
• Our Dancers First donor programme, currently with 32 members, supports opportunities for creative growth, competitive salaries and the commitment to Dancer Wellness for every dancer
logo_ballet embraces a distinctive repertoire
The 2023/24 season reflected Artistic Director
Hope Muir’s ambition for a progressive repertoire distinct to The National Ballet of Canada. Across movement and music, she balanced classical with contemporary and new creations with legacy pieces to challenge our artists and introduce you to many expressions of dance. These included James Kudelka’s newly acquired Passion and first collaborations with four choreographers making headlines for their work today: Canada’s Emma Portner, Toronto-based William Yong and international creators Carlos Acosta and Helen Pickett.
In Practice
• The world premiere of Helen Pickett’s Emma Bovary, featuring an original score by Peter Salem, engages the full company in creation
• The world premiere of William Yong’s UtopiVerse, set to music by Benjamin Britten, is the first mainstage production by an Asian choreographer in company history
• The Canadian premiere of Serge Lifar’s Suite en Blanc brings classical rigour to the dancers and a new legacy ballet to the repertoire
• Carlos Acosta’s Don Quixote makes its North American premiere, breathing new life into a full-length classic the company has not staged in years, complete with a reimagined score
• All premieres are funded in totality by donor support, including underwriters for new works and members of The Producers’ Circle. Thank you all for your commitment to advancing the art form and for your generosity
logo_ballet welcomes all
Dance is for everyone. From this core belief, The National Ballet of Canada creates safe, inclusive spaces for a wide audience to experience movement, music and storytelling. In 2023/24 we expanded our audiences at the Relaxed Performance for our Disability communities, at our second YOU dance Residency and National Livestream at York University and at our free Share the Magic performances of The Nutcracker and Don Quixote. We also participated in a new initiative through Creative Action to deepen our partnerships within Canada’s dance scene.
In Practice
• 1,600 students participate in a week-long YOU dance Residency with 21,000 tuning in for the National Livestream, representing 147 school boards in 177 cities
• Sharing the Stage engages 3,497 people with free outdoor performances, dance classes and conversations with the National Ballet and three guest companies at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre
• 1,292 attend the Relaxed Performance of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland with recommended accommodations from an external Accessibility Consultant
• Creative Action partners with Citadel + Compagnie on the Spring Mix, an annual dance series featuring work by Canadian choreographers at The Citadel: Ross Centre for Dance in Toronto
• New Canadians and refugees attend live performances through CANOO, an organization that provides newcomers with free or discounted access to cultural events in Canada
• Donor funding is critical to our community engagement projects, such as YOU dance, Share the Magic and Relaxed Performances
logo_ballet feels your love
You were a key member of the passionate audience of new and returning donors, subscribers, community partners and ticket-buyers who connected with us in record numbers in 2023/24. We were met with high energy and a warm reception throughout the season, filling theatres at home and on tour with enthusiasm that was reciprocated on stage. Our efforts to cultivate a wide audience was evident in the high engagement online through our social media and website content and at the box office, where subscription and single ticket sales surpassed projections. Performances of our story ballets were completely or nearly sold out. From our wonderful donor community, we received an incredible $11.9 million in charitable gifts, with 549 donors giving for the first time through our Pointe Shoe Fund. Many others joined us for Ballet Talks and special events, demonstrating once again that the National Ballet is built by many and intended for all.
In Practice
• Record-breaking attendance for The Nutcracker and Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures of Wonderland with all performances sold-out
• Record-breaking sales and full houses for Carlos Acosta’s Don Quixote
• The annual tour to Ottawa continued with a warm reception for Crystal Pite’s Angels’ Atlas and Helen Pickett’s Emma Bovary, thanks in part to support from The John and Margaret Bahen Fund for Canadian Tours
• Subscription and box office sales each exceeded plan by over $1 million, up 7.7% from 2022/23
• Donors celebrate the season at our annual fundraising gala, MAD HOT BALLET: Garden of Jewels to raise $1 million in support of the company

Ballet has always been important to me. I grew up dancing, so I am an avid fan of the art form. I particularly like supporting the National Ballet as I believe it is a world class company. I appreciate the classic ballets, but welcome opportunities to see new ballets that reflect our social world.

The National Ballet of Canada, Endowment Foundation
Message from David MacDonald, Chair
The National Ballet of Canada’s Endowment Foundation has never been in a stronger position to support the company’s mission, artists, performances and community activities. Our assets reached a record high of $115 million as of June 30, 2024, making the National Ballet one of the largest performing arts endowments in Canada. The Endowment Board increased the disbursement grant in 2023/24 from 4.5% to 5.0% of Adjusted Book Value. This resulted in a grant of $4.5 million, representing 11.3% of the company’s revenue, delivering much needed support to the company for the 2023/24 season.
Thank you to everyone who believes in the power of dance and has made gifts to be held and invested in perpetuity to support the
National Ballet. We’re extremely grateful to those who have established a legacy of giving within their lifetime so they can see and enjoy the impact of their gift immediately. Visionary donors who leave legacy gifts in their Wills are also contributing in a substantial way to the realization of the National Ballet’s artistic vision and commitment to excellence.
In the last several years, the Endowment Foundation has provided stability to the National Ballet even as world events and fluctuating markets created uncertainty. While markets have recovered, arts organizations across North America continue to face challenging times with economic pressures and a changed marketplace post pandemic.
The Endowment remains a critical part of the company’s revenue mix (box office, fundraising, Endowment grant and government grants), helping the National Ballet withstand lean times while providing stable funding over the medium to long term.
I express my deep gratitude to the donors who have entrusted us with their gifts and the members of the Endowment Foundation Board who continue to steward the Endowment with dedication, discipline, wisdom and passion for the company.

Ten Years with Barry Hughson
In June 2024, Barry Hughson completed his tenure with The National Ballet of Canada after a decade as Executive Director. Under his leadership, the company accelerated its artistic growth, expanded community engagement programming, developed Equity, Diversity and Inclusion initiatives and strengthened our presence on the international stage. These achievements transcended even the historic challenges of COVID-19, coinciding with a ten-year cumulative budget surplus and an Endowment of over $100M.
Barry’s leadership balanced ambition with pragmatism. More than that, it was founded on a genuine passion for dance that started in childhood. We thank him for his immense contribution to the stability and growth of the company and wish him every success for the future.
Barry has dedicated an incredible 10 years of leadership to The National Ballet of Canada and leaves the company ready to embrace an exciting and ambitious future.

Retirements
Three beloved senior artists gave their final performances with the National Ballet in 2023/24. We celebrate their unique gifts and thank them for their dedication to dance.
Principal Dancer Piotr Stanczyk
After 25 years, Piotr Stanczyk bid farewell to the National Ballet with exquisite performances of Passion by a beloved mentor in James Kudelka. Piotr was singular in his ability to command the stage with his dramatic presence while evoking the nuances of human behaviour. His powerful performances across classical and contemporary work, including lead roles in The Winter’s Tale and The Man in Black, made him one of the finest artists in company history.
Senior Répétiteur Peter Ottmann
Peter Ottmann was part of the fabric of the National Ballet for nearly 50 years. His elegant demeanour was a defining quality both onstage and off. Born in Renfrew, Ontario and trained at Canada’s National Ballet School, Peter joined the company in 1976 and was promoted to First Soloist in 1983. Peter’s grace and passion as a dancer made him a natural as Romeo in Romeo and Juliet and Prince Florimund in The Sleeping Beauty, among other lead roles. After retiring from the stage, he brought his deep experience to progressively senior roles within the artistic team, to character roles and coaching. He was a leading répétiteur, knowing the intricate details of many of the company’s ballets, especially the works of James Kudelka, which Peter set worldwide. He has been a friend, mentor and artist of the highest order. Peter retired following his performances as the loveable knight errant in Don Quixote in June.
First Soloist Jordana Daumec
Fearless in contemporary work and pristine in the classics, Jordana Daumec has been lighting up the stage since 2003. She was equally radiant behind the scenes as a mentor, creative collaborator and champion of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Jordana gave her farewell performances in George Balanchine’s Jewels, performing a lead role in Rubies.
logo_ballet invites you to experience ballet in a new light
Bold, inviting, unexpected and accessible. All describe The National Ballet of Canada’s visual identity following a year-long brand refresh in partnership with Bruce Mau Design, effective July 9, 2024. The concept is called “The Storyteller” for its emphasis on creative storytelling that speaks directly to you. Core features include a redesigned website with motion elements, closeup photography and saturated single colours of orange, green and blue. We are so grateful to those who participated in the creation of this identity by providing invaluable input and feedback along the way – our artists, Board members, audiences, staff and members of the international dance community. Together, we have captured the modern quality that will expand and diversify our audiences and lead the National Ballet into the future under Artistic Director Hope Muir.
In Practice
• A recognizable lowercase wordmark incorporates space that makes the National Ballet the protagonist in its own stories and sparks dialogue
• Close-up photography with a single light source invites human connection and focuses on the dancers’ individuality, emotions and athleticism
• Fully redesigned website improves functionality and incorporates movement and video
• Branded company merchandise like water bottles and tote bags integrate the National Ballet into your daily routine
In Memoriam
The history of The National Ballet of Canada is one of inspired individuals coming together to build something extraordinary. We remember these friends whom we lost this season.
Judith Cohen (1943 – 2024)
Judi was a trailblazer, the first woman to chair the board of any major arts company in Canada, when she led the National Ballet’s Board of Directors from 1987 to 1990. She was a key figure in creating the International Competition for The Erik Bruhn Prize. Over four decades, she helped to shape The National Ballet of Canada into the renowned institution it is today, building lasting friendships along the way.
Timothy Stewart (1940 – 2023)
Tim had an unforgettable start to what became a long association with The National Ballet of Canada as a Board member (1976 – 1988), donor and as a member of the Board of the McLean Foundation. He drove the “getaway car” for Mikhail Baryshnikov as he fled the O’Keefe Centre and the KGB to defect from the Soviet Union in 1974. We are grateful to Tim for his generosity, friendship and vision.
Nona Heaslip (1930 – 2024)
Nona gave generously to The National Ballet of Canada for 25 years and was a valued member of The Producers’ Circle. A career journalist, she served on numerous Boards in Canadian culture and education and, with her husband, created the William and Nona Heaslip Foundation to support charitable organizations. Nona was named to the Order of Canada in 2021.
Swan Song
The National Ballet of Canada had its closeup in 2023 with the premiere of Chelsea McMullan’s feature documentary, Swan Song. The film takes viewers inside the 2022 creation of Swan Lake by Artistic Director Emerita Karen Kain, giving unprecedented access to the emotional, creative and physical fortitude of our artists. Swan Song has screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival in the UK and the Calgary International Film Festival, where it received the Jury Award for Best Canadian Documentary. Swan Song is also available as an expanded mini-series on CBC Gem.
In 2024, the film premiered in the US at IFC Center in New York, in select theatres in Los Angeles and is available on demand throughout the US. Following the US release, the film had a limited theatrical run in the UK at London’s DocHouse and became available on demand in the UK shortly thereafter.
